  • Netflix extends multilingual content viewing to TVs

Netflix extends multilingual content viewing to TVs

MUMBAI: Netflix has at long last unleashed its full linguistic arsenal on television screens worldwide, allowing subscribers to frolic through its catalogue in whichever of its 30-plus languages tickles their fancy. The streaming behemoth, which had previously restricted this multilingual delight to mobile devices and web browsers, has finally capitulated from 2 April to the thousands of monthly pleas from linguistically frustrated viewers.

The timing could hardly be more apt. Nearly a third of all viewing on the platform now involves non-English content—a figure that explains why Korean survival drama Squid Game had British grandmothers attempting to pronounce Ojingeo Geim and why Spanish heist caper Berlin has viewers worldwide practicing their ¡Vamos! with varying degrees of success.

“This much-anticipated feature carries over the experience members already enjoy on mobile devices and web browsers,” Netflix announced.

The streaming giant has also cottoned on to another delicious trend: subscribers have been using the service as a language-learning tool. With customisable subtitle options and a “Browse by Language” feature, Netflix has become an accidental competitor to Duolingo—albeit one with considerably more drama, bloodshed and royal intrigue.

For the truly adventurous linguistic daredevils—those peculiar souls who might fancy watching Mexican telenovelas with Korean dubbing and English subtitles—Netflix has now made such exotic combinations possible on the biggest screen in the house.

Global sensations like France’s Lupin, Mexico’s Who Killed Sara?, Norway’s Troll and Germany’s Oscar-winning All Quiet on the Western Front have demonstrated that language barriers in entertainment are crumbling fast. What’s driving this babel of content consumption? Perhaps viewers are finally discovering what continental Europeans have known for decades: that Hollywood doesn’t have a monopoly on compelling storytelling.

As streaming wars intensify and competitors scramble for global market share, Netflix’s linguistic flexibility may prove its secret weapon. After all, in the battle for worldwide domination, speaking the local lingo is more than half the battle—it’s the whole war.

  • Parle Products rolls out three new TVCs for Bengali market

Parle Products rolls out three new TVCs for Bengali market

Mumbai: Parle Products has launched three new TVC’s for Parle Marie. The product consolidates its position as the soul of adda in its latest campaign for the Bengal market.

The campaign is built on the Parle Marie brand’s foundations in the Bengal market.

Designed and executed by Thought Blurb Communications, the three-film campaign addresses a broad demographic of young and old, men and women and are all represented in the films. It spans the width of the populace which has one thing in common. Held by the same social thread that ties and binds all ages & segments of society.

Long before internet chat rooms were in vogue, the Bengali was devouring conversations, ideas and arguments in the form of ‘adda’. Parle Marie biscuits have always been a part of the tea-and-biscuits tradition that accompanies a good adda session. With the new campaign Parle Marie seeks to cement its relationship further.

Parle Products senior category head Mayank Shah said, “In a nation as vast as ours, each region has its own voice, values and ideals. A generic message addressed to the entire country may not always take root. Speaking to each consumer in his individual language, in idioms he understands and in surroundings that he is familiar with, is a far better option. The new campaign is in line with Parle’s belief in regional marketing, speaking in the voice of the local population, using subjects that are deeply relatable, and in a tone that is immediately understood.”

Thought Blurb Communications chief creative office & managing director Vinod Kunj added, “The strategy is as elegant as it is simple. Insert the brand into the social fabric and become part of the consumer’s conversation. Then you can accompany him through his life’s journey with occasional brand reinforcement. Too often, we have to confront the consumer and try to change his preferred brand and habit. But in this case, we are simply building another storey over a home with a strong foundation.”

  • TVS Radeon unveils the new campaign with Pankaj Tripathi

TVS Radeon unveils the new campaign with Pankaj Tripathi

Mumbai: The new age commuter motorcycle by TVS Motor, TVS Radeon has launched a new campaign featuring Pankaj Tripathi. The campaign highlights the impressive new features of its latest variant. Conceptualised by Lowe Lintas Bangalore, the ad film delivers the brand’s message using subtle humorous gestures.

In the film, Lowe Lintas portrays Pankaj Tripathi delivering the brand’s message through gestures and minimal dialogues. The features are showcased through the actor’s actions in a way that would intrigue the customers and keep them engaged, generating a strong brand recall. The narrative lands on the communication message – “Samajhdar ko ishara hi kafi hain” – suggesting how the product speaks for itself without any additional endorsement.

The ad film showcases the new TVS Radeon as India’s 1st 110 cc motorcycle to have the multi-colour reverse LCD cluster. This reverse LCD cluster comes with a real time mileage indicator (RTMi) that enables the user to control the mileage according to riding conditions. Apart from RTMi, there are seventeen other useful features in-built in the digital cluster like service indicator, low battery indicator, top/average speed, USB charger, etc. The new Radeon also comes equipped with proprietary TVS Intelligo (ISG and ISS system) as a variant, delivering an unmatched riding experience and superior mileage. The vehicle continues to ensure best in class comfort for the long-distance riders owing to its longest seat in the category.

Commenting on the maiden campaign, TVS Motor Company senior vice president – marketing Aniruddha Haldar said, “Radeon is designed to deliver comfort and convenience for the everyday commute, With the addition of reverse LCD cluster with RTMi, the bike enables you to take control of your mileage delivery. In today’s context with rising fuel costs, this unique feature will be loved by the consumers. The new film showcases the advantages of these features with subtle humour. The film beautifully captures the essence of the product and Pankaj Tripathi delivers the message in his inimitable style.”

Speaking about the creative thought behind the campaign, Lowe Lintas chief creative officer Sagar Kapoor said, “In a category that is always talking about something new, our challenge was to find an interesting way to talk about the new features in Radeon. We decided that instead of spelling out all the details in a conventional way, we will leave it to the intelligence of our audience to understand what is new. That’s how we landed the campaign idea, ‘Samajhdar ko ishara hi kafi hain’. Pankaj Tripathi became the obvious choice to play Bhaiyyaji in the campaign because of his signature style of communicating a lot just through his gestures.”

TVS Radeon was launched four years back, in 2018, and has crossed many milestones since then with its sturdy build, robust style and plush comfort. The brand has always tried to stay ahead of the curve – be it through their dual tone edition launched at the beginning of this year or the new RTMi feature.

  • Guest Column: The comeback of full-service agencies in India

Guest Column: The comeback of full-service agencies in India

By 2020, we will be close to a billion digitised screens. With the advent of cheaper data and smartphones and by virtue of tech giants such as Google, Facebook and Amazon entering the grassroots of India, digitisation has become inevitable. And it’s going to be mobile plus digitised television (OTT) that’s going to drive most of the scale.

If digital is where maximum content is going to be consumed, surpassing Dish/Cable TV in most geographies, then brands will slowly and steadily move towards exploring digital in a much-evolved fashion and at a large scale. This means media and creative agencies will have to rethink their game plan, which has not changed much in the past two to three decades. Many questions arise, such as will mainline agencies reverse integrate their creative and media thinking to digital? Will digital agencies be able to manage the scale and responsibilities of managing multi-million-dollar campaigns? Will there be a need of creative and media standardisation? How many agencies will a client want to deal with to achieve the end objective? Who will win the rat race? And the list goes on, as we start thinking about how agency life will be when digitisation takes over completely.

In my view, consolidation to make a full-service agency that gives solutions across screens plus creative and media is going to be the future. To date, most agencies are not fully prepared to manage this new world of ‘non-line,’ that is not just online or only offline but both together, as the lines are starting to fade. Mainline and digital agencies are poles apart in creative as well as media thinking but both are eventually chasing one goal. And that’s where the need of a full-service agency is, which creates and advertises one campaign with one objective across multiple platforms and formats. Not to ignore the fact that advertising bodies will also play an equal role in the entire standardisation process. And, sooner or later, it’s a self-evolving cycle that we will all get into, like the one mentioned below-

    1)  Consumers will become more and more digitised; thus, brands will want to get them through digital mediums across mobiles, TVs, PCs, tablets, and even hoardings

    2)   One master creative created in various sizes and formats will start to be the new norm with a fair bit of shoulder content for digital

    3)   And then planning will get more standardised across various mediums and consolidate into one form

    4)   KPIs will become more standardised as well to judge campaign effectiveness against various brand objectives

    5)   Possibly, there will be one tool that agency networks will create and connect to plan and buy across in a truly ‘non-line’ fashion

This model of a full-service agency exists in mature markets such as the US, Japan, Singapore and will soon be a reality in India as well. Such a model increases planning and operational efficiencies and also ensures standardisation, right from planning to execution to industry benchmarking.

It’s about time large agency networks wake up to the reality of a full-service model or soon a challenger start-up that is nimble to take such decisions will start changing the name of the game!

  • TVS TVC celebrates Indian youth’s go-getter spirit

MUMBAI: TVS Motor Company launched a new advertising campaign for its motorcycle brand — TVS Sport. The campaign has been conceptualised by Mullen Lowe Lintas Group and follows the journey of a young boxer from a small village straight to the National Sports Training Facility in the city. He is abetted by TVS Sport, the perfect partner in his pursuit of success; the product’s unmatched fuel economy of 95 km/l, five-year warranty and affordable pricing; one that is an ideal fit for his requirement.

The film opens with a young man riding out of his village on TVS Sport, reminiscing how his humble beginnings never stopped him from chasing his dreams. He rides past the local gym in the village, smiling at how his goals have changed over the years. Riding on the dusty roads in the outskirts, he passes by a broken bike and continues unperturbed on his TVS Sport. His determination is fuelled by the confidence that his bike is high on mileage and durability and is ready to be pushed to new limits. As the film closes, we see him take off his jacket, revealing his jersey with National Boxer imprinted on it thus cementing his position as a go-getter.

The concluding voiceover reinstates that we must never let distances or difficult roads get into the way of achieving our dreams.
