    BBC Worldwide makes first intl sale of ‘In the Night Garden’

     MUMBAI: UK pubcaaster the BBC’s sales division BBC Worldwide has made the first international sale of new children’s property In the Night Garden to New Zealand’s TVNZ.

    The children’s series from Ragdoll was created to appeal to very young children.

    In The Night Garden is a modern interpretation of a nursery rhyme picture book that takes children on an imaginative journey to meet a dazzling host of characters living together in a happy and caring woodland community.

    BBC Worldwide’s Sales Manager, NZ Melanie Owen says, “In The Night Garden is just enchanting. It is funny, reassuring and inspiring entertainment for young children and their carers.”

    BBC Worldwide has also concluded deals with TVNZ for the first two series of The Catherine Tate Show and Fear Stress and Anger.

    Little Robots and What Not to Wear S6 will also have their New Zealand premieres on the network.

    Disney’s Ugly Betty sits pretty as No.1 show in NZ

    MUMBAI: The 2007 Golden Globes is an affirmation of the phenomenal popularity of Walt Disney Company’s Ugly Betty. Riding high on all the adulation, the series has just got a fillip as it premiered in New Zealand. The series, aired on TVNZ’s TV2 on 16 January at 8:30 pm, was the highest rated show of the night.

    The show was telecast in New Zealand a day after its awards romp at the Globes. Attracting an average audience of 613,600 viewers, the series captured a remarkable 18.58 per cent rating share in age group 18-39. Similar to its performance in the US, it was the nation’s female viewership that drove a massive 70 per cent share of its viewership.

    “We couldn’t be more pleased with Ugly Betty’s performance in New Zealand,” commented BVITV’s senior vice president and management director in Asia Pacific Steve Macallister. “We are confident that this endearing and universal fish-out-of-water tale will continue to warm the hearts of viewers as it launches across the region.”

    l In Asia Pacific, Ugly Betty has already been licensed by The Walt Disney Company’s Buena Vista International Television-Asia Pacific (BVITV-AP) to ten broadcasters. TVNZ was the first to premiere in the region. The next launch dates across the region include Korea (KBS) on 3 Feb, Singapore (MediaCorp TV) on 5 Feb, Malaysia (8TV) on 6 Feb and Hong Kong (TVB Pearl) on 15 March. Australia (Seven Network), pan-regional (STAR World), India (STAR India), Korea (CJ Media Channel CGV) and Fiji (Fiji TV) have also licensed the series with air dates not yet announced.

    On 15 January Ugly Betty received a Golden Globe for Best Television Comedy with series star America Ferrera taking home the award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series, Comedy or Musical.

    Ugly Betty (Touchstone Television) is the number one new comedy of the 2006-07 television season with both total viewers and adults 18-49 in the US. Ugly Betty has greatly improved the time period for ABC, nearly doubling its year-ago delivery in both total viewers and adults 18-49. The series was launched in the UK on Friday 5 January with the highest premiere ratings for a US comedy on Channel 4 in 10 years.

    The series is licensed by Disney’s Buena Vista international Television (BVITV).

    BBC Worldwide signs deal with Australia’s Seven Network

    MUMBAI: BBC Worldwide Australasia has concluded a new deal with the Seven Network in Australia to license Michael Palin’s new travel series Palin’s New Europe. In addition, a raft of drama and factual programming has been acquired by broadcasters in New Zealand, through agreements signed in the run up to MIPCOM. Palin’s New Europe which will air on BBC One in the UK next year, follows the ex-Python as he explores 21 countries such as Bosnia, Albania, Moldova and Macedonia. BBC Worldwide Australasia’s sales manager Amber Knight says, “Michael Palin has that rare combination of integrity, wit and bravery which makes all his programs such hits. We are very excited to be bringing this program to Seven.” Seven Network’s director of programming and production Tim Worner says, “Australians are renowned travellers – as a youngster it is a virtual rite of passage and you always seem to bump into fellow Australians in the most far flung locations. Michael Palin captures that spirit in his very own way and we at Seven look forward to being able to have him take Australian audiences to places they have never been before. “Palin is the pre-eminent television travel communicator of his time – in his company you do not just see; you taste, you smell, you experience. And, above all, he makes it fun – that’s why we’re proud he’s coming to Seven.” A package of returning series has been licensed to New Zealand’s TVNZ including key titles from Kudos productions such as Hustle Series 4, and Life on Mars Series 2. TV One has taken series two of Clerkenwell Films’ Afterlife, as well as Hotel Babylon (Carnival Films), Waterloo Road (Shed Productions) and Bodies (Hat Trick Productions).

    earthTV launches in New Zealand

    MUMBAI: Programming produced by earthTV, which operates a remote-controlled broadcast camera network, has been launched across New Zealand on its free-to-air public service broadcaster, TVNZ.

    earthTV produces daily live programming from destinations around the world and its programme, The World LIVE will air daily during the morning block on TVNZ’s main channel TVOne, titled Good Morning, informs an official release.

    TVNZ’s head of news and current affairs Bill Ralston said, “earthTV’s innovative programming will enhance our morning programming, and is exactly the kind of dynamic content New Zealanders expect from their national network. We look forward to developing a significant and lasting partnership with earthTV.”

    earthTV’s president Thomas Hohenacker added, “earthTV is undergoing exceptional growth at this time, and our launch in New Zealand highlights our focus on growing earthTV across the Asia Pacific during 2006.”

    2006 Fifa World Cup to air live on Sky and TVNZ

    MUMBAI: Sky Television and Television New Zealand (TVNZ) have announced the acquisition of the live broadcast rights for the 2006 FIFA World Cup, for New Zealand.

    Under the agreement with Infront Sports & Media, FIFA’s exclusive television partner for the event, Sky will provide full live coverage of the 2006 FIFA World Cup. The coverage includes every match live, daily pre-shows during match days, a daily review show as well as special lead-up programming.

    In addition to the live coverage, every Wednesday evening Sky Sport will screen BBC Worldwide’s sensational series, More Than a Game. In India, Discovery Networks has acquired the India rights to More Than a Game.

    From 7 May, the History Channel (Sky Digital Channel 53) will present The History Of Football: The Beautiful Game, a 13 episode series that looks at the early history of the game, how it has become a global cultural obsession and reflects on the careers of players who have left their lasting mark on the game. It Includes interviews with Pele and Maradona.

    CANNES: The distribution arm of global production company FremantleMedia, Fremantle International Distribution (FID), announced at MipTV a raft of international sales for a number of series starring celebrity British chef Jamie Oliver, including Jamie’s School Dinners, Jamie’s Great Italian Escape and Jamie’s Kitchen.

    Jamie’s School Dinners is currently planned to premiere in the US on TLC while Jamie’s Great Italian Escape will make its American debut on theTravel Channel.The launch of Jamie’s Kitchen, also on TLC, will mark the first time the show will air on one of the Discovery Communication Inc.’s cable networks.

    Both Jamie’s Kitchen and Jamie’s School Dinners have received tremendous praise from viewers and critics alike. Jamie’s Kitchen has recieved many awards like Indie Award, C4 Documentary Award (UK), Grierson, Most Entertaining Documentary(UK); Jamie’s School Dinners has won the National Television Award, Most Popular Factual Programme (UK).
