    earthTV to launch in Korea next month

    MUMBAI: Programming produced by earthTV, which operates a remote-controlled broadcast camera network will launch across Korea on JoongAng Broadcasting’s Q Channel, on 5 February 2007.

    earthTV programmes Motion Time Lapse, Earth Quiz and Best of The World Live will air 20 times daily across Q Channel’s broadcast schedule.

    Q Channel head Christina Lee says, “earthTV’s innovative programming is a perfect fit for the new Q Channel line-up which will feature world class documentary and factual programming. We look forward to developing a significant and lasting partnership with earthTV.” Q Channel has 7 million subscriber households in Korea.

    Launched in 2002, earthTV utilises its patented, remote-controlled camera technology to produce programming from its network of more than 70 remotely-controlled cameras around the world.

    earthTV’s president Thomas Hohenacker said, “earthTV is undergoing exceptional growth at this time, and our launch in Korea highlights our focus on growing earthTV across the Asia Pacific, and globally, during 2007.”

    Among other recent developments, earlier in January 2007, earthTV unveiled its new online platform www.earthTV.com and the site is already attracting huge web traffic worldwide.

    Programming produced by earthTV appears daily on more than 40 TV channels worldwide, as well as on mobile and online platforms.

    Inox reports 40% YoY increase in Q3 net profit

    MUMBAI: Multiplex chain Inox Leisure has announced a 40 per cent increase in net profit for the third quarter of the financial year 2006-2007 at Rs 48.3 million on revenues of Rs 428.3 million.

    Net income in the corresponding quarter of the previous year stood at Rs 34.4 million.
    Total income rose 45 per cent for the quarter; up from Rs. 294.8 million. Inox registered an Ebitda of Rs 101.3 million compared to Rs 82.5 million in the same quarter of the previous year, a growth of 23 per cent.

    Over the nine-month period ending December, Inox registered strong growth with sales up 54 per cent from Rs. 802.9 million to Rs. 1233.1 million. Net Profit has also grown 53 per cent from Rs 131.6 million to Rs. 201.5 million, in the same time period.

    The company also announced that the scheme of amalgamation of Calcutta Cine Private Limited (CCPL) into Inox Leisure Limited has been approved at a shareholders’ meeting held on 4 January.

    Inox has recently launched its property at Chennai in January 2007 taking its tally of multiplexes across India to 13, with 48 screens and 14,286 seats.

    Commenting on the results, Deepak Asher, director – Inox Leisure said, “It has been a satisfying performance this quarter for Inox and things look very promising for the future with several new properties slated to open in the near term, as well as the acquisition of CCPL getting formalized.”

    WWIL Q3 net loss at Rs 159 million

    MUMBAI: Wire And Wireless India Limited (WWIL), Zee Group’s demerged cable company, has posted a consolidated net loss of Rs 159 million for the third quarter ended 31 December 2006.

    The consolidated revenues stood at Rs 513 million for the quarter and Rs 1.5 billion for the nine-month period. Operating losses were at Rs 33 million after expensing Rs 38 million for office infrastructure. Being the first year of operations for WWIL, the previous period figures are not available.

    Commenting on the results Zee chairman Subhash Chandra said, “WWIL has just begun its rollout of digital cable services in the three metros of Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata and it is encouraging to learn that we have been able to capture almost half of the market in these areas. Our analogue cable business continues to lead industry in connecting millions of television homes. The business initiatives of WWIL towards digitization of cable homes and upgrading of cable infrastructure would become visible in the performance from FY2008 onwards.”

    Added WWIL MD Jagjit Singh Kohli, “There is more than expected demand for set top boxes in Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata. We expect that the industry will need at least 6 million set top boxes for complete roll out in these three metros. Demand for digital signals is equally strong in other cities, not notified under CAS. We see cable providing lot more value added services through digital mode. WWIL is heading towards its goal at an accelerated pace.”

    WWIL claims to have deployed 200,000 boxes. Said Kohli, “We believe there is a vast opportunity in cable TV industry, which is going through a rapid phase of consolidation and digitization simultaneously. Our goal is to add 3.4 million subscribers in next two years. Looking ahead, we are confident that continued execution of our distribution strategy would result in a revenue growth faster than that of industry.”

    Asian Film Awards to be held at 31st Hong Kong Intl Film Fest on 20 March

    MUMBAI: Hong Kong International Film Festival Society chairman Wilfred Wong has announced the launch of the Asian Film Awards (AFA) which will take place on 20 March 2007, on the opening night of the 31st Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF).

    Organized by the HKIFF and held in conjunction with Entertainment Expo, the Asian Film Awards will honour the best of Asian cinema over the past year, including filmmakers with outstanding career achievements and emerging artists who demonstrate extraordinary talent in the field of cinema.

    Awards will recognize films and filmmakers from all over Asia – from Iran to China to India – in 10 categories including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Screenwriter, Best Cinematographer, Best Production Designer, Best Composer, Best Editor and Best Visual Effects.

    A jury of 17 film professionals, whose experiences and expertise in cinema are internationally recognized (filmmakers, key personnel from international film festivals, and industry experts from all over the world) have screened over 700 eligible films produced in the region in 2006. Up to six nominees in each category have been selected. AFA winners will be announced at the Awards Gala on 20 March 20, informs an official release.

    “With more than 4 billion people in Asia – 60% of the global population – a celebration of the Asian cinema is long overdue” stated Wong. “We aim to make the AFA the most prominent and definitive film awards for the region by highlighting excellence in Asian filmmaking and by bringing broader attention to the rich and diverse stories and storytellers from all over Asia today.”

    The red-carpet gala and award ceremony will be broadcast throughout Asia. AFA is currently in negotiation with major TV outlets for international broadcast throughout Asia. The gala’s presenters and performing acts as well as the design of the AFA trophy will be forthcoming.

    MUMBAI: Sydney-based entertainment studio Flying Bark Productions has finalized a licensing deal with Canadian toy and game manufacturer iToys for Khufu The Mummy, a DVD-based board game spin-of from the successful Atmosfear – The Gatekeeper.

    iToys, which will introduce Khufu The Mummy at the upcoming New York International Toy Fair, has set Fall 2007 for the retail roll-out of the board game.

    Fully interactive, Khufu The Mummy allows players to interact directly with the on-screen host (the freaky Pharoah) and play interactive games using the DVD remote control. Random DVD programming ensures infinite possibilities and a new game experience every time.

    US ready for pay mobile TV: study

    MUMBAI: American consumers are willing to pay enough for watching TV on mobile phones to justify what it would cost carriers to build a new broadcast network to guarantee quality service, according to just-released study.

    The study by the Mobile Digital TV Alliance discusses the economic viability and consumer adoption of mobile TV and concludes that a successful proposition for mobile TV in the United States is high-quality video and service and flat rates of about $20 a month for unlimited viewing.

    To meet those standards, the alliance suggests building a separate broadcast network, which would cost a carrier between $500 million and $2 billion.

    “The Economics of Mobile TV,” authored by Yoram Solomon, discusses how open standards promote mature competition furthermore improving the economics of mobile broadcast TV, how mobile TV adds a new dimension of value to existing products; as well as why – contrary to popular belief – consumers will pay to use this added service.

    Eros Intnl acquires global distn rights for ‘Nishabd’

    MUMBAI: The global distribution rights for the soon to be released movie Nishabd has been acquired by Eros International. The movie is directed by Ram Gopal Varma and co-produced by Ad Labs.

    Apart from Omkara and the recently released Salaam-E-Ishq and Eklavya, the other global releases that Eros has in the pipeline include Nishabd, Namastey London and the Aishwarya Rai starrer Provoked. All these movies are likely to be released by April 2007.

    Nishabd stars Amitabh Bachchan and new comer Jiah Khan in the lead roles. Aftab Shivdasani, Revathi and Rukhsar also star in the film in supporting roles.

    Eros will release Nishabd globally on 2 March.

    A global player in the Bollywood arena, Eros operates on a studio model producing as well as distributing films across formats globally via cinemas, home entertainment, television formats and new media.

    NSS – 8 satellite launches Friday

    MUMBAI: The Sea Launch team has initiated a countdown at its equatorial launch site. This is in preparation for the launch of the NSS-8 communications satellite for SES New Skies which will take place tomorrow 26 January 2007.

    The NSS-8 satellite is a Boeing 702 spacecraft that carries 56 C-band and 36 Ku-band transponders. It is designed to replace the existing NSS-703 satellite as the centerpiece of New Skies’ strategic Indian Ocean contribution to SES’ global communications network.

    NSS-8 will support a range of functions, including corporate communications, Broadband Internet services and broadcast applications to the Indian sub continent, Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Asia. Designed for a 15-year lifespan, the satellite will have 18 kilowatts of total power at the beginning of life on orbit.
