We are here to empower, won’t judge anyone for their choices: Bhima Jewellers

MUMBAI: Kerala-based Bhima Jewellers has been getting lots of love on social media over the past few days, thanks to its new ad depicting the journey of a transgender woman. While most jewellery ads have the familiar set up of a daughter’s wedding to showcase their product, this one enters untested waters by featuring an actual transwoman, Meera Singhania, as the central character.

The brand approached Delhi-based agency, Animal to help them narrate a unique story of breaking stereotypes in the relatively traditional jewellery business, creating a beautiful and moving film in the process.

Bhima’s marketing manager Vinod Kumar G shared the brand’s intent behind this campaign. “Bhima turns 100 in three years, and we feel that as a brand with such credibility, we want to lend our voice to causes that matter today. This ad is special as it takes us through the journey of a transgender in today’s society – but focuses on the positive side. It ends on a rosy note, at her wedding, with her family behind her every step of the way.”

22-year-old Meera’s own real-life experience of coming out, self-admittedly, was trauma-ridden and not so positive. Which only makes this film with its heart-warming, utopian family setup even more poignant and beautiful.

Kumar adds, “What we want to convey through the ad is that whoever one chooses to be – man, woman, transgender – Bhima is there for you. We are here to serve and empower, not judge. We hope this helps to blur the lines that discriminate on the basis of gender, race, colour etc and families, and (consequently) societies become more inclusive in their thinking.”

The ad with the tagline ‘Pure as Love’, showcases the struggle of a transgender person in coming to terms with their internal conflicts – of having feelings akin to a female while being trapped in a male body. Gradually, she comes to terms with her true self and is unabashedly able to accept herself for who she truly is. And even more significantly, she is unconditionally accepted and supported through every step of her self-discovery by her family.

Brand consultant Ambi Parameshwaran feels this is a “very bold advertising by a relatively conservative brand.” The ad’s bold theme is expressed very tastefully and subtly, without excessive drama. “I admire them for taking on the transgender cause. Kudos to the people who made the film and hats off to the brand that tried to do something like this – which is quite different from the standard father-daughter, marriage kind of films. It is an admirable piece of work and I do hope it works for the brand.”

He adds that because the brand is “largely Kerala-based, with an incredibly high literacy rate, remarkably high social tolerance and diversity – so this kind of advertising will probably work with the Kerala consumer. Perhaps more conservative consumers in other parts of India could find it a little disturbing.”

There have been trailblazing adverts before too, which have tried in their own ways to pull down societal barriers surrounding gender and sexuality. The Vicks Vaporub ad released in 2017 which depicted the real-life story of a transwoman, Gauri Sawant, adopting a girl child is a case in point. Apparel brand Myntra too has done some notable ads portraying lesbian couples.

If one looks at the jewellery space, Tanishq has on occasions tried doing some unconventional creatives. A few years back, it successfully dealt with the ‘second marriage’ theme in another tastefully done ad. Recently, however, its advert revolving around the godh bharai of a Hindu woman in a Muslim family ran into controversy with many people calling for its boycott, till the brand succumbed to trolls and withdrew the ad.

“One has to be careful before doing these things because we are living in highly sensitive times, when people get easily offended,” cautions Parameshwaran. “For that, Bhima Jewellers must be applauded for their courage and I hope consumers love the ad.”

The jewellery brand, on its part, had been clear from the get go that it wanted a transperson, and not a cis gender person, to play the ad’s protagonist. Unlike mainstream media which erases diverse representation, Bhima Jewellers strives to stay authentic to the cause and represent the community the right way.

Parameshwaran sums it up nicely, “What they are trying to say is Bhima understands love can transcend all barriers. So, if your son/ daughter is a transgender you can still love him/ her.”

And that’s the ‘Pure as love’ messaging this inclusive, empathetic film hopes to send out to the universe.

Indians want government to support Transgender People: Ipsos Global Survey

MUMBAI: Ipsos global survey onTransgender Peopleshows that a whopping 80 per cent of Indians polled want government to support and protect Transgender People from discrimination.

Interestingly, across all the 27 markets covered in the survey, more number of people agree that Transgender People should be supported and protected from social ostracism. Globally, India is placed sixth in voicing its concern for Transgender People, preceded by the top five markets of Argentina, Chile, Mexico, Ecuador and Great Britain.

Government support and social acceptance will mitigate discrimination and help Transgender People lead a more dignified life,” says Parijat Chakraborty, Executive Director, Ipsos Public Affairs.

As part of Ipsos’ ongoing commitment to bringing voice to people through data, Ipsos undertook a survey on the topic of transgender people using the monthly global survey vehicle Global Advisor. The data was collected online between October 24th and November 7th, 2017.

The 27 markets covered in the survey were: Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Ecuador, France, Great Britain, Germany, Hungary, India, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Peru, Poland, Russia, Serbia, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, and the United States of America.

Given the range of (mis)perceptions that exist about transgender people, Ipsos and BuzzFeed, in discussion with the Williams Institute, developed a series of questions in 2016 designed to better understand how people perceive and understand the concept and emergence of transgender individuals.

  • Transgender model asks “Why don’t you donate blood?”

Transgender model asks “Why don’t you donate blood?”

MUMBAI: “Donate Blood and Save Life”, a slogan heard and spread everywhere since years, donating blood is also considered to be every citizen’s responsibility. But how far do we abide the same?

There is a transgender community out there which desires to donate blood but is refrained from doing so. We know how to judge them on every aspect but do we know the importance of saving a life? What stops others to donate blood regularly?

Keeping the same in mind and highlighting the two aspects, on the occasion of World Donor Day, BOLD, a transgender modelling agency and WATConsult, the digital and social media agency from Dentsu Aegis Network India, joined hands to launch a campaign titled, #whydontyou.

The campaign revolves around how transgenders are not allowed to donate blood but what is stopping others. Why don’t the people who have the privilege to donate blood do so! The campaign involves a video featuring Rudrani Chettri Chauhan, a transgender who went against all odds to build India’s first LGBT modelling agency.

She is seen expressing the plight of the community which is judged upon, refrained from equality and basic rights, desire to save a life but unfortunately aren’t allowed to. She is seen urging the rest strata to stop judging them instead go and donate some part of their blood which could save a needy.

WATConsult founder and CEO Rajiv Dingra says, “Here are we who pro-actively judge, discard and ignore the existence of transgenders for many reasons but many of us cannot simply donate blood. We wanted to raise awareness about the need of Blood Donation and urge each one of us to become a donor sooner. #whydontyou is simple a step towards the same.”

BOLD Founder Rudrani Chettri Chauhan adds, “As the third gender, the society discards our existence and more importantly our blood, which can save a million lives. Not every transgender carries the HIV virus, as the public believes. So why waste good blood? But people do so many things to judge us, hold us back and do not do their own bit. I don’t know whether its fear or thought or just ignorance but its time, and I ask them why? When you can judge us, stare us, belittle us then why not do something for the society and donate blood?”

As a part of the campaign, the agency has created a microsite, www.whydontyou.in wherein a donor can register and donate blood with a Mumbai based blood donation bank, Triumph Blood Donation bank and for records, India needs 5 crore units of blood annually against an availability of 2.5 crore units.

  • Brooke Bond India’s transgender band sizzles Cannes stage

This is a testimony and belief in our work that began almost two years ago at the HUL Content Day in June 2015. The band faced a lot of challenges throughout their journey, which now culminates to the Cannes stage. Their inspiring performance today is symbolic to their determination and ‘make it happen’ spirit. Truly a collaborative effort between Unilever, Mindshare, Yash Raj Films & Music boutique- who have partnered in this magnificent journey.”

The Brooke Bond Red Label 6-Pack Band was an iconic campaign that sang a song of inclusion and acceptance in mainstream media. • India’s first transgender TV news anchor

India’s first transgender TV news anchor

MUMBAI: Five months after the Supreme Court ruled that transgender people will be recognised as a legal third gender, a television news station has recruited the country’s first transgender news anchor.

Working at Lotus News in Tamil Nadu, Padmini Prakash, first anchored on this Independence Day. Before joining the channel Prakash worked as a dancer as well as acted in Tamil soap operas.

Prakash told the Times of India that she had faced a lot of discrimination throughout her life, including being disowned by her family.

According to media reports, a month after she started, Padmini has become the face of the Coimbatore-based Lotus News Channel’s daily 7pm special bulletin.

The apex court said the transgender would be allowed admission to educational institutions and given employment on the basis that they belonged to the third gender category. They would be considered as OBCs, the judgment said.
