The Amazing Spider-Man beats Transformers opening Tuesday performance

MUMBAI: Sony‘s The Amazing Spider-Man starring Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone has beaten the $27.9 million debut of the first version of Transformers that released in 2007. The Marc Webbs-directed film had set off early 4 July at the domestic box office.
The $220 million Sony reboot — looking to relaunch the franchise by going back to the beginning with a new cast — nabbed the top opening for a Tuesday with roughly $35 million, eclipsing the $27.9 million debut of Transformers on the same day in 2007.
“We are off to an outstanding start here in North America with big fireworks still to come!,” a Sony executive said.
Spider-Man, starring Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone, is being helped at the box office by the upcharge for a 3D ticket and is doing big business in Imax theaters, the favourite venue of young fans. Roughly around 300 Imax theaters contributed $4 million to the $35 million booty.
Estimates vary in terms of how much Spider-Man will earn in its six-day debut. Bullish observers believe it could earn $120 million to $140 million.
On the other hand, Transformers had grossed $155.4 million in its six-day debut after opening on Tuesday although it grossed $8.8 million in advance Monday night shows and a total of $13.5 million including midnight runs.
The film, also starring Martin Sheen, Denis Leary and Sally Fields, is off to a stellar start overseas, where it debuted to $50 million last weekend in only 11 territories.

MUMBAI: Universal is nearing to formalize a deal to pick up Agent 13, a sci-fi project that will have Charlize Theron that director Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) will direct.
T.S. Nowlin is the writer of the film based on a little known comic book from 1988. It was created by G.I. Joe and Transformers cartoon writer Flint Dille and David Marconi who penned the Will Smith thriller Enemy of the State as well as Live Free or Die Hard.

The comic book had post-modern pulp overtones full of femme fatales and explosive cliffhangers. The main character would be reprised by a male despite Theron‘s involvement.
Sean Daniels, who discovered the comic and has been developing since at least last year, is one of the producers. Theron is also attached to the film as a producer under her Denver and Delilah banner.

  • Avatar most downloaded film

    Avatar most downloaded film

MUMBAI: According to a study by TorrentFreak, James Cameron‘s 3-D blockbuster Avatar has been the most pirated film in the history of Hollywood.

The film has been downloaded some 21 million times since it was released in 2009.

It may be remembered that Cameron once touted 3D filmmaking as the entertainment industry‘s best hope for combating piracy, but there has been no respite and the 3D spectacle could not escape the wrath of torrent sites, it is said.

Avatar‘s 21 million downloads beat out 19 million downloads apiece for The Dark Knight and Transformers. The Leonardo DiCaprio starrer Inception and Todd Phillips‘ Hangover ranked fourth and fifth respectively in the most pirated list.

Following them were Star Trek, Kick-Ass, The Departed, The Incredible Hulk, and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World‘s End to round off the top ten.

All of the films on the TorrentFreak‘s all-time list of “most pirated movies” did quite well at the box office.
