    Yahoo!, Seven Network combines online, mobile & IPTV

    MUMBAI: Australian television firm Seven Network and Yahoo have announced that they will combine their online, mobile and IPTV enterprises in Australia and New Zealand.

    The strategic partnership brings together Yahoo!’s Australian internet business, Yahoo! Australia and NZ, and the online assets and television and magazine content of Seven Network.The vision for the combined teams is to create the best entertainment, information and communications experience for Australian internet and mobile users.

    Under the terms of the agreement, Seven and Yahoo! will form a new 50-50 holding company that will own Yahoo! Australia and NZ. Seven and Yahoo! will each hold three of the six board seats in the entity.

    The combined strengths of Yahoo!’s search and communications capabilities and its global Internet network, with Seven’s rich media and entertainment content and marketing capabilities will create one of the most comprehensive and engaging online experiences for Australian consumers and advertisers.

    Seven Network executive chairman Kerry Stokes said, “We are building on our strengths to create a broad media company focused on the delivery of relevant content to all Australians across a number of delivery platforms. Yahoo! is the global Internet leader and their focus on developing compelling content to engage with online audiences complements our strategy.”

    Yahoo! chairman and CEO Terry Semel, said: “Yahoo! and Seven have very complementary businesses and brands, and we see this as a tremendous opportunity to build a leadership position in Australia. This is the best combination to benefit from increased broadband penetration, rich media consumption, and the growing cross-media advertising spend. Together, I believe we can deliver the most engaging and innovative rich media experience for Australian audiences and advertisers.”

    Yahoo! Australia & NZ and Seven will be combining their online teams and are expected to launch a new name and an exciting online presence in late January 2006. This will coincide with Seven’s coverage of the Australian Open tennis Grand Slam and the Olympic Winter Games in Torino, as well as the opening weeks of the 2006 television season.

    As a result of the agreement, Yahoo! Australia & NZ becomes the key platform for Seven’s ongoing development beyond broadcast television and magazine publishing as it builds its digital media division leveraging its strengths in the creation and marketing of content into new and rapidly evolving forms of technology.

    Additionally, Yahoo! will combine its global content, products and technology with Seven-owned content to create a truly Australian online media and entertainment experience rich in video and locally relevant content.

    New consumer offerings will ultimately be available across online, mobile and IPTV in areas such as news, sports, entertainment, TV, games, music, and travel.

    Seven will also contribute AUD$10 million to match the existing development capital in the business, offline promotion through the Seven Network and Pacific Magazines, as well as Seven’s 33 per cent stake in mobile solutions provider m.Net Corporation Ltd, which is subject to obtaining required consents.

    Advertisers will also be able to purchase combined offline and online sponsorships across Yahoo! Australia & NZ, the Seven Network and Pacific Magazines. Yahoo!’s online targeting capabilities, which helped it be named the online media seller of the year by AdAge, will enable both partners to create differentiated advertising packages for Australian marketers.

    Seven claims to be the largest television company in Australia reaching 98 per cent of Australians through its owned and operated stations and affiliate agreements. Seven’s publishing company, Pacific Magazines, is the second largest magazine company in Australia, with more than 6.6 million readers each month across its 15 publications.

  • Eutelsat to sponsor the XXth Winter Olympics in Torino ’06

    MUMBAI: Eutelsat has announced that it’s official sponsorship of the XXth Winter Olympics to be held in Torino 2006.
    In a bid to enable the Olympic community to benefit from live events coverage and to access broadcasts by leading international television channels, Eutelsat will manage an exclusive satellite network for the Olympic community.
    Europe’s leading satellite operator will provide the TOROC (the Torino Organising Committee of the XXth Winter Olympics) with a package of 50 video channels that will be broadcast for the duration of the Games to competition sites, Olympic Villages and Media Villages, says a company release.
    Eutelsat’s satellite coverage of the Olympics will span the Opening Ceremony on 10 February ’06 to the closing ceremony on 27 February ’06. Eutelsat will also deliver satellite services for officials, athletes, and attendees at the Paralympics, a sporting competition for disabled athletes that follow the main Olympic event, from March 10 to 19. Paralympics atheletes will compete in five disciplines, including alpine skiing, biathlon, ice sledge hockey, cross-country skiing, and wheelchair curling.
    The network will provide athletes, judges and referees, members of the IOC, National Olympic Committees and Federations as well as journalists and media operators at competition, training and accommodation locations with exceptional levels of information.
    Twenty Olympic Live channels will be provided by the TOBO (the Turin Olympic Broadcasting Organisation) with live coverage from each of the 13 competition sites. Another 30 television channels will enable the Olympic community to follow coverage by national and international television channels, says the release.
    The package will be delivered direct to 5,000 plasma screens and monitors located at the competition sites, three Olympic Villages and seven Media Villages during the Games. Eutelsat will multiplex, encrypt and uplink these services through the facilities managed by its Italian subsidiary, Skylogic Italia, in Turin.
    According to Eutelsat CEO Giuliano Berretta, “Next to human achievement, the Olympics are also the opportunity for innovative new technologies to demonstrate their new levels of performance.   • NBC, Clear Channel tie up for next 5 Olympics

    NEW YORK: NBC, America’s Olympic Network and Clear Channel Advantage, a division of San Antonio-based Clear Channel Worldwide, announced a marketing alliance for the next five Olympic Games, last week.
    The agreement begins with the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens and extends through the 2012 Olympic Games, to be held in a host city yet to be determined.
    The joint announcement was made by The NBC Agency co-president John Miller and Clear Channel Advantage president Don Howe last Wednesday.
    The partnership pairs the US’ number one television network with the largest radio broadcaster and leading live entertainment producer.
    Clear Channel Advantage develops, sells and executes media-marketing initiatives intended to help advertisers reach active and on-the-go consumers.
    NBC is planning to present 24-hour, around-the-clock coverage of the 2004 Olympic Games utilizing all five NBC-owned networks: NBC, MSNBC, CNBC, Bravo and Telemundo. The company holds the exclusive U.S. broadcast rights to the Olympic Games through 2012, which include Athens in 2004, Torino, Italy in 2006, Beijing in 2008, Vancouver in 2010 and the Summer Games of 2012.

  • Hi Def broadcasting to be keynote for Intnl Sport Summit

    MUMBAI: Sports broadcasting in high definition (HD) television has started growing in popularity in the US. Disney’s ESPN has a 24 hour HD service. In its 26th year, the International Sport Summit will look at this issue in great depth. The event takes place next month in New York.
    In addition, the summit will examine the marketing mechanism that the National Football League uses. It will examine the boost that soccer in America received following the Women’s World Cup. Of course, Olympic events in Torino (2006), Beijing (2008) and Vancouver (2010) will also be scrutinised.
    Other topics will include expanding the cable channel universe, how Fortune 500 companies leverage sports as an investment, new video technology for sports production, repurposing sports content for use on the web and wireless platfoms, action and extreme sports and target marketing for diversity
    Last year, the International Sport Summit claimed to have drawn over 1,000 sports executives at the 25th annual meeting. The Olympic Games, in the context of the Athens Games and other upcoming Olympiads, were a major topic of last year’s Summit, along with a variety of discussions on doing business in China, women’s sports and sponsorships.
