  • Adam Sandler is highest paid actors: Forbes

Adam Sandler is highest paid actors: Forbes

MUMBAI: As the year comes to an end, Forbes listed Hollywood’s highest paid actors of 2014. Forbes compiled the annual ranking by looking at the estimated salaries of Hollywood’s top stars, the budget and revenue of the last three films each actor starred in before June 2014 to determine a return on investment for each actor.

For the second consecutive year, comedian Adam Sandler topped the list, leaving behind stars Johnny Depp and Tom Hanks. According to Forbes, for every $1 Sandler was paid, he returned an average of $3.20 approximately.

Adam Sandler’s latest film Grown Ups 2 was a hit, raking $246m at the global box office.

Depp, the star of the hugely successful Pirates of the Caribbean films, came in second, returning an average of $4.10 for each dollar paid, because of recent flops like The Lone Ranger and Dark Shadows.

Comedian Ben Stiller, whose film Night at the Museum: Secrets of the Tomb opened in US theaters earlier this month, ranked third with a $4.80 return, due to Tower Heist and The Watch, which did not perform well at the box office.

Ryan Reynolds, who starred in Green Lantern, was fourth with $4.90 for each dollar paid, followed by dual Oscar winner Tom Hanks, who pulled in a $5.20 return, rounding out the top five.

Animated and limited release films and movies featuring cameo roles were not included in the calculations.

  • Tom Hanks to Produce ‘Factory Man’ on HBO

Tom Hanks to Produce ‘Factory Man’ on HBO

MUMBAI: Tom Hanks’ production company and HBO have bought the broadcasting rights for the bestselling book by journalist Beth Macy ‘Factory Man’ and is planning to develop the story into a miniseries.

Actor Tom Hanks and producer Gary Goetzman plan to co-produce the project through their production company, Playtone, with Steven Shareshian serving as co-executive producer and Peter McGuigan as co-producer. The cast of the miniseries have not been decided yet.

The book follows and chronicles the story of the Basset family in Virginia, who have been running The Basset Furniture Company since the early 1900s and became the world’s largest wood furniture manufacturer. However, in the ’80s, Asian countries and businesses boomed, placing the long-running furniture company in competition with its Asian counterparts. In order to keep up to the times and the demand in furniture at that time, the family was forced to outsource its labour and production overseas which meant that a lot of local Virginians lost their jobs in the process. This changed when John Basset III decided to take a stand and bring back the factory’s production to Virginia. The company currently has more than 700 Virginians working for the Vaughn-Basset Furniture Co. and has sales that total more than $90 million.

This news comes after Hanks’ review of the book on twitter on 24 July, “Great summer reading. I give it 42 stars. No, I give it 142 stars. Yeah, it’s THAT good. Hanx.”

Playtone is currently producing a miniseries based on Elizabeth Strout’s bestselling book Olive Kitteridge, starring Oscar-winner Frances McDormand. Playtone has also produced such Emmy-award winning hits like Band of Brothers, The Pacific and John Adams.

  • Indian Navy watches Tom Hanks Captain Phillips

Indian Navy watches Tom Hanks Captain Phillips

MUMBAI:  Captain Phillips, the movie that has taken the world by storm, has even caught the attention of the Indian Navy now. At a special request, Sony Pictures organised a special screening for the Indian naval officers, including the Commander-in-Chief, Western Naval Command, Shekhar Sinha in Mumbai on the official India release date of 18 October.

With very few movies being made on this very relevant and current subject, the theme of Captain Phillips seems to have found a connection with the officers as it deals with the hijack of a container ship and the kidnapping of its captain by Somali pirates. Captain Phillips is based on real life story of Captain Richard Phillips who was held captive by four Somali Pirates in 2009.

Two-time Oscar winner Tom Hanks plays the role of Richard Phillips in the movie. The movie which was recognised as one of the best movies of 2013 by Rolling Stone magazine is directed by Paul Greengrass.

Sony Pictures India MD Kercy Daruwala said, “An extensive local word-of-mouth programme for the film has built excitement for this film. We are confident that the film is a commercial entertainer as well as a critical success and are expecting great things for this film in In

Commander- in- Chief, Western Command – Indian Navy, Vice Admiral Shekhar Sinha commented on the film saying, “Captain Phillips is an amazing movie. The film is a realistic portrayal of a hostage situation. Captain Richard Phillips’ character played by Tom Hanks is also very inspiring.”

Captain Phillips recounts the true-life ordeal of Richard Phillips, the captain of a US-flagged cargo ship, the MV Maersk Alabama, sailing with a 20-man crew and 17,000 metric tons of cargo that was bound for Kenya in April 2009 when it was abducted by Somali pirates. The movie is already being pronounced as Oscar-worthy (especially for Tom Hanks’ portrayal) and received a standing ovation at the New York Film Festival recently.
