Samsung’s new campaign on customer service

MUMBAI: Samsung India recently launched a nationwide digital and television campaign showcasing its initiative to take customer service to the doorsteps of consumers in the hinterlands.

The new campaign – conceptualised by Cheil India and unveiled across 50 channels — showcases the journey of a young Samsung engineer, who is on his way to help with services in a remote village in India. The commercial underlines Samsung’s vision of creating long-term relationship with its consumers through timely service.

Samsung India CMO Ranjivjit Singh said their new initiative of expanding to rural India, right up to the taluka level, helps them in taking care of their valued customers, wherever they were. The new campaign video gives a glimpse of yet another initiative towards ‘Make for India’ commitment.

Cheil India CCO Sagar Mahabaleshwarkar said even the most advanced products needed some TLC once in a while. While others might expect visiting the service centres, Samsung visits the consumer instead. That’s the measure of Samsung’s emotional investment in its customers.

  • Ten 1 most watched; WWE leads table

Ten 1 most watched; WWE leads table

MUMBAI: Ten 1 has become the most watched channel in Week 49 (3 December 9 December, 2016), according to Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) — all-India data. The ratings include both the urban and the rural market.

WWE TLC is at the top spot in terms of programs, usurping India’s heroics against England in the fourth test which was played at Wankhede Stadium and was broadcast by the Star Network. The next three positions amongst channels have been taken by Star Sports 3, Star Sports 1 and Star Sports 2 in descending order. Sony SIX stands at the fifth spot in the channel listings.

Looking at the Impressions 000’s garnered, Ten 1 got a whopping 90516, helped by the overwhelming fan frenzy of the WWE. Test Cricket is not a dead form in India, and this is clearly suggested by the ratings. Star Network got a total viewership of 184173 Imp’000s, clearly outweighing the other networks. Sony SIX also got a healthy 22879 Imp’000s, probably due to Spanish football league matches which features both Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, crazily followed throughout India.

Talking about programs, WWE TLC led the charts with 2263 Imp’000s, closely followed by Team India’s exploits in the Wankhede Test. The second day of the Mumbai Test got 2241 Imp’000s on Star Sports 3, also garnering 1249 Imp’000s for Star Sports 1, which stood at the fourth position. Sandwiched between both was the first day of the Test – which saw England racing to a strong total, making the one-sided series a little more exciting, with 1861 Imp’000s for Star Sports 3. Ten 1 completed the rankings table, with WWE Raw getting 1246 Imp’000s for the last spot on the table.

With the ISL semi-finals that were held from 10 Dec to 14 December, it’ll be interesting to see how these games impact the rankings and make a presence at the table.

  • New Discovery India chief joins office; verticals created under two VPs

New Discovery India chief joins office; verticals created under two VPs

NEW DELHI: Discovery Networks Asia Pacific, home to iconic brands like TLC, Animal Planet, ID, Discovery channel and Discovery Life, has effected a restructuring in its Indian operations, after its Indian head Rahul Johri quit earlier this year, by creating two verticals under two vice-presidents which will now report to the newly-appointed South Asia Senior Vice President & General Manager Karan Bajaj.

Bajaj in turn  reports to Discovery Networks Asia Pacific president & managing director Arthur Bastings, who has been charged with the responsibility of scaling up the network’s operations in the region and steering it into the digital ecosystem.

The Delhi-based heads of the two verticals under Discovery South Asia — Rajiv Bakshi and Richard Pembroke — female & family entertainment product and real world entertainment product, respectively — report to Bajaj who joined duties a couple of days ago. TLC, ID, Kids, and their HD and other language cousins fall under the female, & family entertainment product, while Discovery, Science, Turbo, Animal Planet, and their HD and language versions come under the Real World vertical.

According to Discovery sources, the changes that came into effect in recent months are aimed at revitalising the Indian operations, which the Asian regional head office located in Singapore felt was necessary after a period of slow growth in Asia’s biggest market, India.

Discovery, which broadcasts in English and several Indian languages aimed at increasing the reach beyond the English speaking areas, has also been increasing generation of local content for broadcast in South Asia and also on its global network.

The sources, however, clarified that the changes are interim in nature and as Bajaj settles down in his new assignment more rejigs may be in the offing.

Discovery, which launched its operations in India in the mid-1990s with former ISRO executive Kiran Karnik at the helm, has been witnessing churn since long-time executive Johri quit the organisation early 2016, which was also part of changes taking place in Discovery after Singapore-based Tom Keaveny, President and MD for Discovery Networks Asia-Pacific, was relocated to London in 2013 and Discovery bought over Eurosport subsequently.

Still, Indian broadcast industry observers said that Johri, a protégé of former India head Deepak Shourie (he was at the helm after Karnik departed in 2001), had navigated Discovery’s India operations quite ably during challenging times in the first decade of 2000.

In recent times, the whole Discovery group has been focusing on initiatives to keep pace with the changing technological space, including recently announcing a U$100 million investment in a digital JV as a minority stakeholder in Group Nine Media.

  • TLC gung-ho about Aalim’s Bollywood hair style show; more Indian originals coming up

TLC gung-ho about Aalim’s Bollywood hair style show; more Indian originals coming up

MUMBAI: Discovery Communications’ lifestyle channel – TLC, armed with consumer feedback and international research, is back with the second season of “Style Inc. with Aalim Hakim.” With a reach of over 70-80 million households in India, the lifestyle channel is attempting to give viewers another peek at what is the latest in terms of hair styling in India.

The series will provide a gateway to the life of Bollywood’s new male brigade from 20 October every Thursday-Friday at 10 pm. The repeat telecast will be on Saturday-Sunday at 6 pm on TLC and TLC HD World.

The second season of the series has heart throbs Ranveer Singh, Arjun Kapoor, Varun Dhawan, Siddharth Malhotra, Aditya Roy Kapur, Ayushmann Khurrana, Tiger Shroff and Sanjay Dutt opening themselves up to Aalim. Viewers can watch Aalim transform their favourite stars for movies, photo shoots and ad films, as well showcase the unique relationship they share with Bollywood’s go-to stylist.

The six-episode show has roped in FitBit and Usha International as advertisers on board so far, and talks are on with a few more brands.

“TLC is a unique, standalone channel. It can’t be compared with any other channel. We have always tried to capture the trend of the country. Once, travel was a trend and then grooming was, and makeover used to be; now styling is in vogue. We believe that the audience is looking for content on beauty and style right now. We want to invest in this genre which is unique,” said Discovery Networks Asia-Pacific vice president, female and family entertainment products, south Asia Rajiv Bakshi.

He further stated that, “We are overwhelmed with the tremendous response the series has received on social platforms. Style is the new buzzword, and no one does it better than the new generation of Bollywood actors. The kind of Bollywood stars who would be appearing on the show can offer tips about maintaining one’s hair. It is a layered show, and not a straightforward one.”

Depending on the success of this season, the team will explore further possibilities. “We want to build a franchise,” added Bakshi.

Hakim added, “It is so exciting to witness this shift in India towards styling and grooming. I am super-charged to be doing the second season of “Style Inc. with TLC.” Fans will get to see Bollywood’s youngest and most stylish stars and get to know their style mantras.”

Targeted at the young millennials in the 15-35 age-group across India – who have a deep interest in styling but don’t know where to get it done from – the show will tell them the difference between a good and a bad haircut. “We are certainly targeting urban India. From the south, Bangalore is a very important market for us, and Hyderabad too has a good viewership. There is enough appetite in the north and the south,” voiced Bakshi.

The channel is launching eight to 10 shows in the next three months based on the genres of dating, relationship, food, travel, and a couple of series coming in from India.

Bakshi stressed that TLC is not limiting itself to a particular show genre. “We have always tried to do something more than what the audience demands. The approach of what they would want to watch which could be unknown to them is what we want to capture.”

With a countable number of channels in this space, Bakshi opined that there was enough place for new players.

“It is an attractive and feasible genre, and the market is dynamic. Certainly, as a market, it can obviously take more channels. The passion towards a certain kind of TV will overtake passion towards traditional TV. And, we believe, lifestyle is one of the areas of interest,” Bakshi concluded.
