STAR, Zee & Times top media list, Airtel & Tata Sky entrenched

MUMBAI: STAR, Zee and Times have continued to lead in the list of top 10 media groups in India. The growth of television distribution firms, Business Standard reported, has been one of the major changes the listing has seen in five years. Bharti Airtel and Tata Sky are now well-entrenched in the leading 10 companies.

A noticeable fact is that a film company is missing from the list of Top 10 or 20 firms.

Among the media firms, the pattern in India is similar to the global one where some of the biggest media houses are the ones with a grasp on distribution. For example, Comcast, the largest global media firm (Rs 5.15 trillion revenue), is a distribution giant.

Only Times, Jagran and HT Media are the only print media firms in the top 10. The Times group, BS states, receives an estimated 60 per cent of its revenues from its print business.

The rest is a mix between Internet, radio and TV. Although Zee, as Times, is also diversified with print, cable, DTH, radio and TV broadcasting, but its major revenues come from TV broadcasting and distribution.

  • Times’ Srivastava says entertainment channels aiming for 33% ad rate hike, Movies Now 2 rebranded as MNX

MUMBAI: Times Network, with seven movie channel, has decided to rebrand its Movies Now 2, now renaming it as MNX. The brand, the Network believes, is now ready to stand on its own feet with its unique identity as a brand.

With the legacy brand setting up high standards, the Network claims, its time for MNX to take up the challenge. With what the Times Network called ‘a full blown’ cross-platform promotion without naming, MNX is being promoted in print, outdoor and radio.

“Increase in the viewership leads to increase in ad rates as well. The Times Group garners one-third of the English viewership in India. And so, we are aiming for 33 per cent increase in the ad rates,” Times Network EVP & head – entertainment cluster Vivek Srivastava told Indiantelevision.com

MNX will showcase movies from its 4-5 different libraries which has a collection of around 1500 movies. MNX has lined up its properties for the weekdays and weekends: Wild Ones: Weeknights (Mon – Fri), 11 pm, Xtreme Nights: Weeknights (Mon – Fri), 9 pm, WTF (What The Flicks): Weeknights (Mon -Fri), 7 pm, Bad ass Weekends: Sat -Sun, 9 pm, Stacked Sun 9am-9pm, Get Lucky, Xterminator: Dusshera special, Xplosive Nights: Diwali special and Call X – Viewers Choice.

“Movies Now 2, which was launched a year ago, worked excellently — with its distinct identity, library and positioning. As the channel grew, it started giving tough competition to the top three players, and it was necessary to give it a new identity from the current and future perspective,” the EVP said.

“Movies Now 2 was not doing justice to the legacy brand — Movies Now. Therefore, it was essential to rebrand it,” he said, and claimed the “response from the sponsors has been fantastic.”

MNX was unveiled with the telecast of its first Big Bang Movie – Mad Max Fury Road on 15 July 2017. Adding to the bandwagon of fun-filled movie festivals will be properties such as Xtreme Nights on Weeknights at 9pm.

Xterminator will be a special movie festival during Dussehra (September 21 – September 30) which will showcase movies such as Olympus Has Fallen, The Mechanic, Hobbit and Journey to the centre Earth, to name a few.

Finally, for its viewers, the channel will give them a chance to get lucky with awesome and super cool gadgets daily with MNX Get Lucky Contest as part of their Watch and Win Movie Festival.

  • Times’ WWM steps into TV prod with Jio as Filmfare wows Punjab & Femina digitises

MUMBAI: WorldWide Media (WWM) CEO Deepak Lamba had last year announced his company’s intentions to foray into TV production with a slew of productions. His wish has become a reality with the launch of the company’s first-ever chat show Famously Filmfare premiering on Jio TV today (12 May) followed by telecasts on Colors Infinity from 14 May.

Jio has created a seamless digital life experience for the Indian audience and we believe this premiere will present an exciting on-the-go experience for the movie fans. This innovation will also allow film enthusiasts to engage with their favourite stars on a variety of digital platforms, a Jio spokesperson said.

Also, with Lonely Planet and TopGear, WWM is launching its first one-of-a-kind travel and adventure series ‘Nexa Journeys on Asian Highway 1’ in association with Nexa which will be telecast on the Discovery network come 21 May 2017.

Says Lamba:  “At WorldWide Media, our strategy is to be the leader in lifestyle and entertainment content. As a result, our focus is on increasing our presence in the video content and intellectual property (IP) space through long-format content, and with, Famously Filmfare, we are bringing our first such show on digital and television platforms. Soon after this, we will also be launching other versions in Tamil, Malayalam, Bengali, Marathi and Punjabi.”

Filmfare.com generates around 25 million page views a month, and Lamba has opted to partner Jio TV for all language versions of its chat shows. He reveals that preference is being given to the media firms’  previous partners such as Star network for all its southern India chat shows.

To a question, Lamba said that through digital business they aim at trebling its profits (from 5% at present) in the next financial year. “Sixty to 70 per cent of our reach takes place through mobile devices as observed by comScore and Similarweb,” Lamba added.

The Bengali and Marathi Filmfare awards found a home on Colors Bangla and Colors Marathi while the Punjabi version was telecast on Mh1 on 28 April. He is hoping to spike Filmfare’s page impressions to 50 million impressions by the end of next year.

Amongst the other WWM properties he is also looking at extending the iconic brand Femina into video content space, which generates close to 37 million page views a month. Under this umbrella, around 60 events are held — annually. And, Lamba is hoping to add to that number in the coming year.

Says he: “We are seeking alternative revenue streams and looking for new media platforms to exploit the IPs that we have in a different way. There are different revenue streams which are traditional ad sales, event business, digital media, content syndication, TV and web shows and circulation revenue.”

Times Internet forms strategic alliance with Business Insider

MUMBAI: Times Internet (TIL), the digital arm of the Times of India Group, has entered into a strategic partnership with America‘s most popular business news site to launch Business Insider India.

The partnership will combine Business Insider‘s real-time, intensive approach to news with qualitative editorial expertise of TIL and deliver a strong portfolio of global and localized content for the Indian audience. Times Internet will be Business Insider‘s exclusive partner in India for content development, events, monetisation, and syndication.

The unique alliance will help TIL give Indian users an access to international news covering a wide range of subjects ranging from business trends & strategy, career skills, digital trends, industry reports, white papers, advertising and much more. TIL intends to use The Times Group‘s multimedia resources to help develop and evangelise the brand locally.

Times Local Partners (TLP) is a recently launched initiative by Times Internet to partner with global digital companies to launch, build, and grow meaningfully in India.

Two months ago, TLP announced a partnership with Gawker Media to bring Gizmodo and Lifehacker to India. TLP intends to launch local versions of those sites in April 2013, with a similar hybrid model of local and global content, curated and tailored for the Indian market, which will leverage Times Internet‘s position as the largest Indian network by traffic.

Discussing the partnership with Business Insider, TIL CEO Satyan Gajwani said, “Business Insider is one of the most successful digital-first news organizations in the world, with a pioneering combination of original reporting, aggregation, and dynamic social engagement tools. Their bold and direct editorial perspective grips readers, and already today attracts a strong loyal following within India. We can‘t wait to expose them to a larger audience and increase their relevance and prominence in India.”

Business Insider is known for its distinct style of coverage of news from around the world, with 15 million monthly visitors worldwide. After its successful foray with an Australian version earlier this month, the Indian version will further help Business Insider expand its presence in the Asian sub continent. The site already has a wide user base and fetches a good traction in the country.

Business Insider Founder & Editor-in-Chief Henry Blodget said, “We have many loyal readers in India, so making it the site of the latest international version of Business Insider makes a lot of sense for us. We‘re thrilled to be partnering with Times Internet – which has such a storied history, and breadth of editorial resources and acumen – and we look forward to working with them to engage readers in India with a Business Insider that‘s more tailored to them.”
