Shraddha Kapoor replaces Priyanka Chopra in Milan Talkies

Aashiqui 2 star Shraddha Kapoor is on cloud nine these days. Now in a position to pick and choose, Shraddha has just given the nod to Tigmanshu Dhulia’s Milan Talkies, thereby replacing Priyanka Chopra who was until recently, very excited about working with Tigmanshu.

A source close to the project revealed, “After Bullett Raja where he has cast Saif and Sonakshi together for the first time, Tigmanshu and his producer Ekta Kapoor were keen to cast another untried pair in Milan Talkies. Imran and Priyanka made a lot of box-office sense together. But when Imran opted out and was replaced by Shahid Kapoor, Tigmanshu had no choice but to replace Priyanka since Shahid and Priyanka together after Teri Meri Kahaani spelt doom.”

Shraddha, on the other hand, is felt to be the new rising female actor after Aashiqui 2. Both the male and female protagonist in Milan Talkies has equally powerful parts.

A closed source says that after Aashiqui 2, Tigmanshu feels Shraddha can carry off the complex dramatic moments as well as the light-hearted interludes in Milan Talkies.

As for Priyanka she seems to be gravitating towards the lighter fun parts after a series of heavyweight dramatic roles. A source close to Priyanka reveals that at present, Mary Kom is her only emotionally challenging role. Apart from that, Priyanka is looking for a change of mood after 7 Khoon Maaf, Barfi and Teri Meri Kahaani.

  • UTV to come out with a coffee book on the making of Paan Singh Tomar

UTV to come out with a coffee book on the making of Paan Singh Tomar

MUMBAI: When Paan Singh Tomar released early last year, little did one realise that the film would go on to make such a significant mark globally.

A story of an Indian athlete (represented India at the 1958 Asian Games in Tokyo, Japan) turned army man turned dacoit was an exciting concept for writer Tigmanshu Dhulia and Sanjay Chouhan to develop into a film. Great content, superb reviews, incredible word of mouth and a correctly targeted distribution strategy contributed to the success of the film.

In its zest to immortalise the story, UTV Motion Pictures, the producer of the film, has decided to come out with a coffee table book on the making of Paan Singh Tomar. Journalist turned author Priyanka Jain was roped in to write about it. (She has earlier co-written a book on Vinod Chopra along with scriptwriter of 3 Idiots Abhijat Joshi).

The book will give readers a good glimpse of the real and reel life of PST with some never seen before pictures depicting his life. Both director Tigmanshu Dhulia and leading actor Irrfan are backing this project.

Says Disney UTV Managing Director – Studios, Siddharth Roy Kapur, “It is very important for filmmakers and studios to archive stories around iconic movies which have the ability to inspire future generations. As an industry we have not done enough so far to document our incredibly rich cinematic heritage, and this is a small step in that direction. To see the film alive in the form of a book is a way to share the experience of Paan Singh Tomar with all those who were touched by the movie.”

Observes Tigmanshu Dhulia, “The story of Paan Singh Tomar was so captivating that both UTV and I believed that it needed to be told so much so that as a rare case UTV even funded the research for this film. The story of the making of the film Paan Singh Tomar, I believe, is equally compelling. Paan Singh Tomar‘s struggle is not very different from what our real heroes face even today. Hence the book and the film will be contemporary even today.

DAR MentorCap gets Sebi approval for Rs 1 bn film fund

MUMBAI: The DAR MentorCap jointly promoted by DAR Media Private Limited, a leading Mumbai-based film production and distribution company, and MentorCap Management Private Limited, an investment advisory firm, has received Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) approval for its film fund under the new AIF guidelines.

With an initial corpus of Rs 1 billion, the DAR MentorCap Film Fund has tenure of five years with a liquidation option for investors after three years. Apart from high-levels of corporate governance, transparency and credibility the fund is also seeking significant alpha generation targeted IRR in excess of 20 per cent.

The Film Fund is being marketed as an exclusive product amongst an identified set of High Net worth Individuals (HNIs) and Institutional Investors.

DAR MentorCap Founder & Partner Shailesh Haribhakti said, “The steady upswing in the Hindi film industry has now prepared it for systems, processes and good governance. The simultaneous establishment of the AIF regulations have created the space for this unique film fund that will execute over 20 projects in the next 2-3 years.

“The most distinguishing aspect of the fund is that it already has a wide selection of projects to invest in through our partner DAR Media‘s extensive network and experience. From that perspective investors in the fund will see their money working from the word go. A new Asset Management Company (AMC) – Creative Collaboration Advisors has already been set up to evaluate and manage the fund‘s investments,” added Haribhakti.

The funds General Partner DAR Media has already identified, seeded and created a consideration set of over 20 projects for the fund, leveraging key industry partnerships with the likes of Anurag Kashyap, Shimit Amin, Tigmanshu Dhulia, Nikhil Advani, Danis Tanovic and Pan Nalin, amongst others.

DAR MentorCap, and Chairman of DAR Media Founder & Partner Arun Rangachari said, “The DAR MentorCap Film Fund will follow a calibrated, controlled, transparent and focused investment strategy of acquiring quality projects, following innovative risk mitigation strategies and getting optimal returns. We aim at hedging risk by investing, at ground level, in a bouquet of projects that are at various points of the film‘s production and release cycle. To this effect DAR Media will offer its entire production slate, which currently stands at over 20 projects, to the fund for its consideration. These projects are being offered to the fund at zero premium and is a reflection of our endeavour to facilitate institutional and HNI investment flows into the industry.

“This apart the Fund will further be encouraged to work with the entire value chain of the Indian film industry and take up positions in projects that are in sync with the fund‘s overall investment strategy,” added Rangachari.

  • Gangs Of Wasseypur 2 : Much ado about nothing

Gangs Of Wasseypur 2 : Much ado about nothing

MUMBAI: If Gangs Of Wasseypur was not enough of an overdose of local gang wars, Gangs Of Wasseypur 2 is worse. It is like being invited for dinner and then having hours of family holiday videos inflicted upon you with a running commentary by the host. The story continues with yet another generation of Khans carrying on the enmity with the Quereshis who have survived round one. The string-puller-cum-rule-maker of the wars of the clans is still the same, Bahubali Ramadhir Singh (Tigmanshu Dhulia). What has changed is the way of killing: guns of all kinds have replaced knives and swords. If one looks at the sequence of events in this story of the clans, it is obvious that the Hollywood classic The Godfather has been brought in to Jharkhand and slaughtered without mercy.

Sardar Singh is killed at the end of Gangs Of Wasseypur with bullets shot at him from every conceivable angle. Times have changed and the place has become the breeding ground for wannabe dons, just like wannabe Sachin Tendulkars and wannabe Salman Khans are sprouting all over in real India. One of the aspirants for the kingdom is Khan‘s own half brother, Zeishan. That is why it is even more pertinent for the Khan clan to guard its reputation and top position in the underworld. As soon as Sultan‘s body is laid to rest, the elder son, Danish Khan (Vineet Singh), sets out to find his father‘s killers but is soon killed himself. The second one, Faizal Khan (Nawazuddin Sidiqui) is unmoved; he is heavily into smoking weed and romancing his wife to be, Mohsina (Huma Quereshi).

The good for nothing Sidiqui may have been written off, taunted and called names by his mother, Richa Chadda, but he belies all expectations. Waiting for the mourning period to get over, he strikes on his enemies. Following the old filmy pattern, he starts from the bottom rung. Why can‘t he go for the top plotters of his family‘s ruin? After all, Ramadhir Singh and the perpetrator of the murder of his father and elder brother, Sultan Quereshi (Pankaj Tripathi), is roaming all over, exposing himself. But that would mean the film would end in half an hour!

The killings continue, with children and women all being fair targets for the Quereshis as long as the person bears a Khan tag. Killed in the spree are Sardar‘s (Manoj Bajpayee) widow, Richa Chadda, her youngest son and elder son Vineet Singh‘s widow. This takes the enmity a bit to the extremes. This and many such sequences not only not add to the content value of this film but only help prolong it. As a result, it slows down and becomes boring. Also, like his father, Nawazuddin changes businesses at whim and the one he chooses for himself stays his monopoly; nobody else dare indulge in same business.

Playing the Quereshis and Khans against each other, Dhulia has survived so far because he has changed sides as and when needed and has never been in the forefront. However, his son is foolhardy and against the wishes of his father, who always chides him for being a fool, wants to prove himself. He keeps provoking the Quereshis to go behind the Khans. They are provided automatic guns and grenades and the fight to the finish takes place on the Khan residence. Closeted in one room deep into the house, the family survives as Nawazuddin sneaks out to get treated for a bullet wound and later retaliate. The man leading the Quereshis, Tripathi, is spotted and killed easily enough but Dhulia is not so easy to finish. He is ensconced safely in the big town, Dhanbad, well guarded. Nawazuddin has an aide in his half brother, Zeishan. The climax is prolonged what with Nawazuddin using one gun after another to empty the bullets on Dhulia, who is cornered and settled on a toilet seat. All one can see of him is his blood when the shooting is over so as to not make this sequel pale in anyway compared to its first part in depicting gore where weapons like swords were used and blood flowed freely!

This over two and half hour film is mainly about killings but there is also an attempt at humour, even if it is of the crude type. Like the band led by Yashpal Sharma, playing a fitting song at funerals or weddings or the three boys named Definite, Perpendicular and Tangent; then there is honeymoon night with Nawazuddin and Huma and the whole house shakes due to the vigour with which they make love. Whatever humour is tried in dialogue it is of the vulgar kind.

Performances of the artistes are generally good with real life portrayals; Nawazuddin Siddique excels as he never goes overboard and treats his role in a matter-of-fact manner. Richa Chadda and Tigmanshu Dhulia carry on from the earlier part of the film and are as effective in Part 2 as in Part 1. The same goes for Piyush MIshra and Pankaj Tripathi. Of the others, Mohsina as the film buff and Zeishan Quadri as the don aspirant are both good and natural. Direction by Anurag Kashyap is indulgent; he tries to cram too much into the film and uses violence as the shocker but such shock value can work only occasionally. That the film is divided in two parts is fine but even as such the length of each part is too much. Music is purely local except one where Huma uses English words in a song to encourage Nawazuddin each time there is a setback.

Gangs Of Wasseypur 2 is even less effective than its earlier part. After all, part one has shown all that the makers wanted to show except the culmination of a family feud. The film‘s Wednesday release to rake in as much as it can before Ek Tha Tiger hits the screens next week, may only have affected the film the wrong way.

  • Tigmanshu Dhulia making film on Begum Samru

Tigmanshu Dhulia making film on Begum Samru

MUMBAI: Basking in the glory of recent hits like Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster and Paan Singh Tomar, Tigmanshu Dhulia is making a film on Begum Samru.

Begum Samru was the head of a professionally-trained mercenary army consisting of Europeans and Indians, inherited from her European mercenary husband Walter Reinhardt Sombre.

The period film is based on the life of Samru, who started her career as a nautch girl in 18th Century India and eventually became the ruler of Sardhana, a principality near Meerut. Later on, she played a key role in the political power struggle in 18th and 19th century India.

It is said that since Kareena Kapoor had liked both the latest films of Dhulia and evinced interest to work with him, the director has approached the actress to play the lead.

Dhulia set to make biopic on Begum Samru

MUMBAI: Basking in the success of Paan Singh Tomar, Tigmanshu Dhulia is all set to make a biopic set in medieval times on Begum Joanna Nobilis Sombre (1753-1836), popularly known as Begum Samru.

Samru, who started off as a nautch girl in 18th century India, eventually became the ruler of Sardhana, a place near Meerut. Interestingly, Rani Mukerji has been signed to play the role.

It is interesting to note that Samru played a critical role in the political struggle in 18th and 19th century India. She was the head of a professionally trained mercenary army, inherited from her European husband Walter Reinhardt Sombre. This army consisted of Europeans and Indians.

Significantly, Begum Samru is also regarded as the only Catholic Ruler in India. She died immensely rich at the age of 90. Her inheritance was assessed as approximately 55.5 million Gold Mark in 1923 and 18 billion Deutsch Mark in 1953.

The project is set to hit the floors sometime later this year.

Paan Sigh Tomar collects Rs 120 mn in 2 weeks, says UTV

MUMBAI: UTV has said that its release Paan Singh Tomar, the biopic of a soldier-athlete who turned a dacoit, has collected Rs 120 million at the domestic box office.

The film was made on a shoestring budget of Rs 45 million.

UTV Motion Pictures CEO Siddharth Roy Kapur said, “Great content, superb reviews, incredible word of mouth and a perfectly targeted distribution strategy has played a significant role in the film‘s success. In the second week of its run, we have gone wider with a release in the Gulf and in 20 additional Tier 2 and 3 cities in India.”

He added that the film’s success vindicated a long held belief that audiences today are open to new styles of storytelling and new genres of cinema, as long as they are engaging and entertaining. “At UTV, we have consistently kept the faith in new filmmakers and new genres and are thrilled today to see this cinema achieve the sort of commercial success nobody thought possible.”

  • Valmiki community want Tigmanshu Dhulia to change film title

Valmiki community want Tigmanshu Dhulia to change film title

MUMBAI: Looks like Paan Singh Tomar director Tigmanshu Dhulia is destined to land into controversies.

Recently, Dhulia had a brush with the CBFC when the censoring authority passed Dhulia’s inherently violent story like Paan Singh Tomar with a ‘UA‘ certification that allows it to be a suitable watch under parental guidance.

The director had to fight tooth and nail to prove that cleaning out the character‘s language would be tantamount to emasculating him. He waged a long battle and finally erased the expletives from the film.

Now Dhulia‘s next titled Valmiki Ki Bandook has kicked off a new storm. The Jimmy Shergill starrer has offended the sentiments of the Valmiki community in Punjab. It is said that after reading an article on the film in a local paper, the community reacted very strongly and made calls to Jimmy Shergill and Tigmanshu Dhulia (the creative director) to change the title.

A senior officer from Punjab police called up Shergill and cautioned him to change the title since the situation was very sensitive. He said that if they refrained from doing so, it could lead to riots in Punjab.

Said Shergill, “The film has got nothing to do with Sant Valmiki or the community. Valmiki happens to be my surname in the film. The title could also be Shergill Ki Bandook. It‘s a coming-of-age story. My director has assured them that we have no intention to hurt anyone‘s sentiments.”

Tomar’s nephew lodges FIR against Tigmanshu Dhulia

MUMBAI: Tigmanshu Dhulia‘s up-for-release film Paan Singh Tomar has been shrouded in controversy.

Balwant Singh, the nephew of dacoit Paan Singh Tomar, has lodged an FIR against the director who has made a film on the latter‘s life. In a complaint lodged with the Madhavganj police station in Gwalior, Singh said that the director had detracted from his promise of paying him Rs 4 million for passing on details about his uncle‘s transition from an athlete to a dacoit.

The film has Irrfan Khan play the role of Paan Singh Tomar, a resident of Bhidausa village in Morena district. A subedar in the Indian Army, Tomar won the steeplechase event at the National Games for seven years in a row. However, after the killing of two members of his family in a land dispute, he became a rebel who wrought havoc in the Chambal valley.

A senior from the police station has said that an investigation has been launched to ascertain the facts.

Paan Singh Tomar is scheduled to release on 2 March.
