    NFDC India Screenwriters’ Lab 2013 heads to TIFF

    MUMBAI: Announcing its final selection of six projects for the 2013Screenwriters’ Lab, from over 350 applications, NFDC (National Film Development Corporation – India) relocates the first stage of its Lab to Toronto in co-operation with TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival). The Lab has previously been hosted by Locarno and Venice festivals, each having welcomed two editions of the Screenwriters’ Lab.

     

    TIFF Bailey Artistic director Cameron said, “Indian independent cinema is taking the world by storm and it all begins with its screenwriters. We’re proud to welcome this workshop to the Toronto International Film Festival, and support the NFDC’s important work.”

     

    NFDC MD Nina Lath Gupta said, “NFDC is delighted to be expanding it’s long relationship with the festival by bringing the now renowned Film Bazaar Screenwriters’ Lab to Toronto for the first time, allowing our 6 writers’ creative process to be imbedded within TIFF, especially as Ritesh Batra’s acclaimed The Lunchbox, developed in our 2011 edition of this same lab is honoured with a Gala screening on 8 September”

     

    The six projects selected are to be work-shopped first in Toronto and further in Goa in November, before being presented in the annual Film Bazaar Co Pro Market:Nikhil Mahajan’s first feature Pune 52 was released in 2013 and was a follow up to his feature Doc Half a Billion Dreams (2011)

     

    Bela Negi wrote and directed the 2010 comedy Daayen Ya Baayen (Right or Left) and revisits the quirkiness of Indian rural life in this project which will be her second feature

    Varun Grover is perhaps best known for his collaboration with Anurag Kashyap as lyricist for That Girl in the Yellow Boots and Gangs of Wasseypur, and Vasan Bala’s Peddlers, Varun also has emerged through TV stand-up comedy writing.

     

    Shanker Raman is an award winning Cinematographer and (co) writer known for Frozen (TIFF 2007) and Harud (Autumn- TIFF 2010)

     

    Ashish Aryan is transitioning from a successful commercials career, taking on his first feature film with his project T for Taj Mahal, which he’ll be co-writing with Sachin Ladia, one of the writers of Kashyap’s Gangs of Wasseypur

     

    Rajesh Jalla is a renowned documentary director best known for Children of the Pyre (Best Doc Montreal 2013) who turns his lyrical style towards his first fiction feature project.

    Meghe Dhaka Tara to show at TIFF

    MUMBAI: Meghe Dhaka Tara (The Cloud Capped Star), directed by Ritwik Ghatak in 1960, will be screened in Cinematheque programme of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) 2012.

    “A young woman desperately struggles to keep her family out of poverty in this fiercely moving masterpiece by the great, perennially under-recognised Indian auteur Ritwik Ghatak,” the festival website describes of the film.

    The other films to screen in this section are The Bitter Ash by Larry Kent, Dial M for Murder by Alfred Hitchcock, Loin du Vi?tnam by Joris Ivens, William Klein, Claude Lelouch, Agn?s Varda, Jean-Luc Godard, Chris Marker, Alain Resnais; Stromboli by Roberto Rossellini and Tess by Roman Polanski.

    Vasan Bala’s Peddlers to show at TIFF

    MUMBAI: After garnering a fantastic response whilst competing at the International Critics Week at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival recently, Vasan Bala‘s Peddlers, starring Gulshan Deviah, Siddharth Menon, Kriti Malhotra and Nimrat Kaur, is all set to screen at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) this year.

    The film has been programmed for the City-to-City section with an aim to bring global cities to Toronto audiences where the focus will be on Mumbai this year.

    Produced by Guneet Monga and Anurag Kashyap, Peddlers has definitely been creating an impact with the buzz around it in India and in the international festival circuits. Speaking about the film, Guneet Monga said, “TIFF is among world‘s top movie events, and is a gateway for international films into the North American region. We are very proud and honored to have not one, but four of our films including Peddlers at the festival this year. Eros International saw the potential in the film the moment they saw it and decided to back it up.”

    Interestingly, Peddlers is Vasan Bala‘s directorial debut. Prior to Peddlers, Bala assisted Kashyap on Dev D, That Girl In Yellow Boots among others and partnered with him as the associate director of Michael Winterbottom‘s Trishna that was filmed in India.

    Talking about his first film, Bala said, “It‘s great that the film has been selected at Toronto after Cannes. Since the French press sighted a very American independent influence on the film, I am quite curious how it will be received here.”

    Jackie Chan and Chris Dodd will headline networking event at TIFF

    MUMBAI: Jackie Chan will join MPAA chairman and CEO Chris Dodd at the networking event for the Asian and western film industries to be held at the forthcoming Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on 10 September.
    “As both a key launch pad for films in North America and home to huge audiences for Asian cinema, we think Toronto can be a prime meeting place for the Asian and western film industries,” said TIFF artistic director Cameron Bailey while announcing the upcoming Asian film summit.
    Names of other guests at the summit will be announced in the coming weeks as Toronto continues to establish ties with the Asian film industry.
    The Toronto International Film Festival is scheduled to run on 6 to 16 September.

    Kshay to screen at the Romania film fest

    MUMBAI: Karan Gour-directed Kshay (Corrode) is set to screen at the 11th Transilvania International Film Festival (TIFF) in Romania in the Faith section.

    The film stars Rasika Dugal, Alekh Sangal and Sudhir Pednekar.

    Kshay centres around Chhaya, a simple housewife with an artistic bend of mind who spent a seemingly happy life with her husband Arvind. Money trickles in every month and life goes on for an unassuming Chhaya, until her eyes catch hold of an unfinished sculpture of the Hindu goddess Lakshmi.

    Her values and relationships begin to decay day-by day that eventually leads her to surrender to the clutches of an ugly obsession that feeds on her weaknesses and past disappointments. She must have the Lakshmi. The rest forms the crux of the film.

    Kshay recently bagged the Best Feature Film award at 10th Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles and was also screened at the 47th Chicago International Film Festival.

    The TIFF will take place from 1 to 10 June in Cluj- Napoca in Romania and between 13 and 17 June in Sibiu in Transylvania.

    12 EU film producers for TIFF

    MUMBAI: A dozen European producers attached to Producers Lab Toronto will fly to Toronto on the occasion of this year‘s Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) to meet an equal number of Canadian producers.
    The Lab has been in operation for the previous two editions of the Canadian festival and this year has secured necessary funding from the European Union‘s Media Mundus program to help the Europeans reach the Canadian festival event.

    The forum is organized by European Film Promotion (EFP) in collaboration with the Ontario Media Development Corporation (OMDC) and Toronti International Film Festival (TIFF).

    In order to foster closer relations between the producers, the participants are subsequently invited to alumni meetings during the Berlin and Cannes film festivals.

    Organisers of the first two editions of the Lab said almost all of the participants from 2010 and 2011 are in contact with one another and 27 projects are actively in development.
    The TIFF, that will run from 5 to 8 September, aims to unite producers from Europe and Canada on film projects and bolster co-productions.
