Shaji Karun to head festival directorate in Kerala

MUMBAI: The Kerala State Chalachitra Academy, under eminent filmmaker Shaji N Karun, will form a festival directorate for smooth conduct of International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) this year onward.

Announcing the new scheme of things, Kerala minister for cinema K B Ganesh Kumar said: “International Film Festival of Kerala has already earned recognition as one of the best known film festivals. The formation of the directorate would improve its character.”

The long-term plans of the Academy included setting up of a multiplex along with facilities for staging other art forms in Thiruvananthapuram, the minister said.

The decision was taken in advance to prepare for the 17th International Film Festival of Kerala to be held in December. The Academy‘s National Film Festival would be held at Kothamangalam from 18 March onwards.

1933 silent film dug out of Padmanabhaswamy temple

MUMBAI: Besides the discovery of huge treasures from vaults of the famed Padmanabhaswamy temple in Thiruvananthapuram, a silent film focusing a turbulent phase in Travancore made in 1933 has been dug out of the box where it has been lying unseen for decades.

The film that tells the story of Anizham Tirunal Marthanda Varama, creator of modern Travancore, also has prefixed to it rare footage of the ‘arattu festival‘ shot in 1930s. The film is, perhaps, the only motion picture documentation of the temple and its customs as existed in the early 20th century.

Titled Marthandavarma, the film is an adaptation of the famous novel by Malayalam’s literary icon C V Raman Pillai published in 1891. The literary classic, which follows the style of ‘historical romances‘ of English novelist Walter Scott, narrates the story of Marthanda Varma who renovated the temple in the present form and dedicated his kingdom to the presiding deity and declared himself and his descendants to be Padmanabhadasas (servants of Lord Padmanabha).

His assumption of power was preceded by a gory phase of power struggle and civil war in Travancore as he had to suppress open rebellion by a clique of powerful Nair chieftains who wanted a puppet to be enthroned in place of a farsighted statesman of great courage like Mathanda Varma.

According to Film Lovers Cultural Association society general secretary Dr M K P Nair, the film was made by R Sundararaj in 1933 and directed by South Indian film veteran P V Rao.

Insat-4B launch set for early March

MUMBAI: The Indian Space Research Organisation’s (Isro) Insat-4B satellite is scheduled to be launched from Kourou in French Guiana in the first week of March.

This was confirmed by Isro chief G Madhavan Nair on Monday. Speaking in Thiruvananthapuram in the southern state of Kerala, Nair was quoted in media reports as saying: “Final tests are being conducted on the satellite and it will be moved to French Guiana by the end of this month.”

The Insat-4B, the second satellite in the Insat-4 series, will be carrying 12 KU band and as many C band transponders for communication and broadcasting services.

One likely customer for the KU band transponders is Kalanithi Maran’s Sun Group, which had booked space last year on the failed Insat-4C for its DTH venture Sun Direct.

Sun TV had booked six transponders for DTH and one for DSNG (digital satellite news gathering) on the Insat-4C.

Speaking to Indiantelevision last August after the failure of the Insat-4C launch mission, Isro contract management and legal services director SB Iyer had said: “We have the flexibility to accommodate Sun. If there is an early requirement, we can give them space on an Indian or foreign satellite.”

Current indications are that Insat-4B, which was originally meant for Doordarshan’s DTH service DD Direct Plus will likely be used to accommodate Sun as well.

When asked about it today, Iyer was noncommital though, stating, “We are still deciding we will be accommodating one or two DTH providers.”
