  • PVR Inox wins first round in Bhool Chuk Maaf battle: court halts Maddock’s OTT debut

PVR Inox wins first round in Bhool Chuk Maaf battle: court halts Maddock’s OTT debut

MUMBAI: The Bombay high court has thrown a wrench into Maddock Films’ plan to skip the cinemas and take Bhool Chuk Maaf straight to Amazon Prime Video. In a dramatic turn, the court issued an interim stay on the film’s OTT release, siding with PVR Inox in a fierce Rs 60 crore legal battle.

The courtroom clash erupted after Maddock Films, citing “heightened security drills across the nation” amid an India-Pakistan conflict, decided to ditch the planned 9 May theatrical release and launch the Rajkummar Rao and Wamiqa Gabbi starrer directly online on 16 May. But PVR Inox, which had already geared up for the theatrical launch, wasn’t having it.

PVR Inox’s counsel, Dinyar Madon, told the court that Dinesh Vijan’s Maddock had breached a 6 May contract that locked the film into an eight-week theatrical run before any streaming release. “The producers pulled the plug on the deal just a day before the release,” he argued. The multiplex giant demanded Rs 60 crore in damages.

Maddock’s defence, led by Venkatesh Dhond, tried to wriggle out, claiming the eight-week clause only mattered if the film actually released in cinemas. But justice Arif Doctor wasn’t convinced. He pointed out that PVR Inox had already reserved screens, promoted the film, and sold tickets. Cancelling at the last minute, he said, would damage the multiplex chain’s reputation and goodwill.

The showdown is far from over. Maddock Films must now file a response before the next hearing on 16 June.

In the meantime, Bhool Chuk Maaf is stuck in limbo — a family entertainer without a family to watch it.

  • Lionsgate India to release ‘The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent’ in cinemas on 22 April

Lionsgate India to release ‘The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent’ in cinemas on 22 April

Mumbai: After two years of raging pandemic and continual shutdown, Lionsgate India has announced a theatrical release for new film “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” starring Nicolas Cage. The film will be released and distributed by Cinepolis and Pen Marudhar in India on 22 April.

The film portrays fictionalised version of the seminal award-winning actor who faces financial ruin and must accept a $ one million offer to attend the birthday of a dangerous superfan. It all takes an unexpected turn when a CIA operative recruit him to take down the superfan. He is forced to channel his most iconic and beloved on-screen characters to save himself and his loved ones, said the statement.

The film is directed by Tom Gormican and written by Kevin Etten. “Nicolas Cage is unbelievably talented and can do any genre,” said director and co-writer Tom Gormican. “There are very few actors that can do every genre equally well, who can switch from comedy to drama – sometimes within the same project – and that’s fascinating to me.”

“We have always been committed to bring exciting premium content for audiences,” said Lionsgate EVP Amit Dhanuka. “Watching Nicolas Cage and his supreme screen presence on a big screen is surely a treat for many of us, at least me. With its exciting narrative and a gripping action-comedy, this film is set to take you on a wild entertainment.”

Nicholas Cage added, “This is Tom’s invented version of Nick Cage – a neurotic, high-anxiety version of Nick Cage. This film is a real head trip for me.”

Dilip Kumar’s unreleased film to hit the theatres soon

MUMBAI: The first superstar of Indian cinema may soon be making a comeback to the big screen. Yes, we are talking about Dilip Kumar, one of whose unreleased film from the 1990s is set for a theatrical release.

According to reports, Aag Ka Dariya starring Dilip Kumar and directed by VS Rajender Babu will be released sometime in Januray 2014. The reports confirm that the film didn’t see the light of the day earlier because of a financial dispute and also because the original print of the film was badly damaged in the intervening years. But Babu recently discovered a “perfect print” of the film with a distributor in Singapore and was surprised to find it that it was kept so carefully.

If the film releases, it may be considered 91-year-old Kumar’s last film. Interestingly, the film also stars actress Rekha.
