Times change again as Varun Kohli exits, Gopakumar takes interim charge

MUMBAI: Another shuffle at Times Network has set the industry buzzing. Varun Kohli, who joined as chief operating officer barely a year ago, has suddenly stepped down from the role. In the interim, Rohit Gopakumar, currently CEO of entertainment and digital business at The Times Group, has been handed charge of the broadcast business.

The development comes against the backdrop of CEO M.K. Anand’s exit in July 2024, when he quit after more than a decade at Bennett, Coleman & Co. (BCCL). Kohli was brought in just a month earlier, in June 2024, to oversee the network’s revenue function across its television broadcast business.

Kohli, a seasoned media professional, moved to Times Network from Bharat Express, where he spent a year and a half as director and CEO. Before that, he briefly helmed Sporty Media Solutionz as CEO and held senior stints at ITV Network (group CEO), Network18, HT Media, and Amar Ujala Prakashan.

Meanwhile, Gopakumar isn’t new to the media house. He joined the group in August 2023 as CEO of Worldwide Media and was later elevated to lead entertainment and digital. His expanded remit now includes steering Times Network’s broadcast operations during a tricky phase for the industry.

With two top exits in just over a year, Times Network finds itself once again at a leadership crossroads and all eyes will now be on how Gopakumar steadies the ship.

Pickleball World Rankings names National Pickleball League Australia as official 2025 Oceania partner

New Delhi: Pickleball World Rankings (PWR) and  National Pickleball League (NPL) have confirmed a partnership that establishes NPL as the exclusive and official tournament and league provider for the Oceania region in 2025. Through this partnership, NPL’s leagues and tournaments will now be part of the PWR structure, allowing NPL players to earn points towards their PWR ranking and assist in qualifying for the PWR World Series.

PWR is home to the newly created Pickleball World Rankings, along with the PWR World Tour and PWR World Series. As a unified global ranking system, PWR offers a clear path for pickleball players to earn ranking points by competing in regional events. Players accumulate points through the PWR World Tour and can qualify for the PWR World Series.

NPL runs the Professional Teams League (NPL ProTour) and a professional tournament circuit.

As PWR’s exclusive partner in Oceania, only NPL events—both league and tournaments—will award PWR ranking points in the region. This collaboration aims to unify regional bodies under one global structure, supporting the long-term growth and governance of pickleball.

The exact point structure for NPL Australia tournaments will be announced later in 2024, but all events will fall under PWR’s established categories: PWR50, PWR100, PWR200, PWR400, PWR700, PWR1000, and PWR2000.

PWR is a partnership between The Times Group, the news and entertainment leader in India and Pickleball League Asia Private Limited.  PWR, the PWR World Series, and the PWR World Tour were launched in Dubai in July’2024, with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) announced as the host region for the first PWR World Series.

PWR had also recently announced PWR DUPR Indian Tour & League, a grand pickleball tour and league for India. The former World number one tennis player Andre Agassi will visit India in January 2025 to officially flag off the PWR DUPR Indian Tour & League.

This event is a key milestone for pickleball, boosting its presence on both the Indian and global sports landscapes.

NPL CEO Ron Shell said: “We are thrilled to partner with PWR for 2025 and support their significant investment in the global pickleball ecosystem. PWR’s vision for the sport is incredibly exciting, providing our players with the opportunity to be part of a global movement while still enjoying regional competition. The introduction of a unified, international ranking pathway is exactly what has been missing. We look forward to delivering top-tier Oceania leagues and tournaments in 2025, helping players progress in their professional pickleball careers.”

The Times Group managing director Vineet Jain said: “The vision of PWR is to unify the global pickleball community and drive the growth of pickleball in global markets. The partnership with NPL is a step in that direction and we are excited to partner with them”

PWR CEO Pranav Kohli added: “Australia is a key market for the growth of PWR in the Oceania region. We’re excited to collaborate with Ron, David, and the entire NPL Australia team. This partnership is a major step in PWR’s global expansion.”

MK Anand, MD & CEO, TIMES NETWORK said, “India Economic Conclave through the course of its 4 editions has successfully carved its own niche to become the most definitive global platform for driving India’s Economic Agenda. The 5th edition comes in the backdrop of very volatile news flow, with ensuing global trade war on one side and key state election results on the other. From RBI Governor’s resignation to the upcoming general elections, the Indian economy is at an interesting inflection point. With a strong purpose to drive the narrative of shaping the $5 trillion agenda, India Economic Conclave strives to build conversations with policy makers, think tanks and global experts for constructive dialogue and discussions on critical points concerning the Indian economy”.

Mr. DevendraFadnavis, Chief Minister, Maharashtra, said, “What is the strategy towards the 5 Trillion Economy? The first trillion will come from Agriculture & Allied Activities, the second trillion should come from manufacturing. The biggest contribution to the 5 Trillion Economy will come from the services sector, it’s not just the traditional services but modern services – industries 2.0, and all the allied activities like fin tech, big data, AI, block chain and digital economy. It is estimated that out that out of this 3 trillion, 1 trillion can come from digital economy. To support these three verticals we need a horizontal push of infrastructure as that’s the key to fast tracking to 5 Trillion economy.

Highlighting Maharashtra’s contribution to the 5 Trillion economy, Mr. Fadnavis added, “Maharashtra accounts for 51% percent of big infrastructure projects in India. We have also created strong governances with a war room which has brought down the time of approvals by 75%. We have attracted over 8Lakh Crore investments through the registered 18000 projects. We have started a fin tech & direct purchase policy in the state. Today, Maharashtra is the start-up & FDI capital of the country. We aspire that by 2025, when India’s economy will be 5 Trillion, Maharashtra will be the first Indian state to have a Trillion dollar economy”

Sharing his views at the India Economic Conclave 2018,Mr. RaghuramRajan,Former RBI Governorsaid, “We must first pat ourselves on the back for what we’ve done so far. 25 years of 7% growth is a good thing and so we have come some distance. What helps us grow in a healthy way is strong institutions, whether it’s the pollution regulator, the efficiency regulator or the financial regulator. So these are the structures that we must strengthen and they have to stand as independent bodies to ensure our growth is healthy. We also need to focus on equitable growth, creating more jobs for our increasing population. We also have wake up calls that we need to far more in terms of quality education and healthcare. We must focus on improving the quality of the research, the quality of our universities for our companies and start up ecosystem to get better. We also need to improve our statistical processes, qualitative and quantitative. However, I think there’s no immediate reason to be overly concerned about India but there is a reason to revisit our growth path to ensure it is stable, sustainable and equitable. If we can do all this, we are on the right track”

The two-day India Economic Conclave that kick started today, December 12 will culminate on December 13, 2018. The 5th India Economic Conclave is powered by ET NOW, presented by Capital First and power partner Ravin.
