Digital reality shows will compete with TV in future: Payal Bhagat

Greymatter Entertainment has been in the news for all the right reasons lately. The Mumbai-based production house is producing Amazon’s latest reality talent show, The Remix, which has been well received so far. After having travelled to several countries in the previous years such as Vietnam and Canada, the show finds home at home. It even got the acclaim of being Fresh TV’s top 25 MIP formats to watch out for.

Greymatter Entertainment was founded by Chandradev Bhagat, Rahul Sarangi and Payal Mathur Bhagat in 2009.

In an interview with Indiantelevision.com, Payal Bhagat said that television viewing in India is still largely driven by appointment viewing and talent shows are mainly to drive up viewership through nonfiction content. The youth is leading the change of consuming TV content via digital platforms.

Greymatter has done a good amount of work in the non-fiction and brand solutions space. It has also worked on shows for niche channels like MTV, Discovery, Ten Sports, VH1 and brands like Pepsi, Vodafone, Reebok, Idea and Ray Ban among others.

Bhagat shared her insights with us on the company’s progress and the growth of the industry.

    Edited excerpts:

How did you begin your journey? What were the challenges faced ?

Prior to this, I had worked for Sony Entertainment TV during its launch phase and Ten Sports, Chandradev had been with IMG /TWI and Ten Sports and Rahul with MTV and Colors.

Having spent over a decade on the broadcaster side of things, we were keen on moving to the other side and actually being hands on involved in producing the kind of content that really excited us. There was no better way to do this than set up our own little production house so that is how Greymatter came about.

The biggest challenge that we faced was getting used to the fact that we were starting from ground zero even after having been in the industry for more than a decade. We had to unlearn a whole lot and start from scratch.

It was like taking baby steps in a whole new world – every step came with its own set of challenges right from the procedural hassles of setting up a new entity to trying to get meetings with decision makers for pitching our concepts to managing cash flows to keep ourselves afloat!

Tell us about your body of work across genres.

Our journey began with a good amount of work in the non-fiction and brand solutions space. We worked on shows for niche channels like MTV, Discovery, Ten Sports, VH1 and brands like Pepsi, Vodafone, Reebok, Idea, Ray Ban etc.

Apart from this, due to Chandradev’s vast experience with live sports production, we started getting live sport production projects and that turned out to be a strong vertical for Greymatter. We have done productions like IPL funfeed, Sri Lanka Premier League, Afghanistan Premier League, Celebrity Cricket League, Pro Wrestling League and Premier Futsal to name a few.

While we kept working on non-fiction / docu series like Mid-Wicket Tales with Naseeruddin Shah, Satyamev Jayate – Mumkin Hai and Umeed India with Virender Sehwag, we were looking forward to build our own IP and invested time and effort in building out bibles for some concepts that we felt strongly about. We now have a bank of formats like The Remix and Street Stars which are being distributed around the world.

How do you see reality shows, made especially for digital, shaping up ?

Reality shows made especially for digital is a fairly new phenomenon. While there have been a few in the cooking and travel space, a music reality show has not been attempted purely for digital on a larger than life scale.

The Remix on Amazon is one of the first such shows and in some ways will set the benchmark as well as offer viewers a new experience on the digital platform.

Reality shows lend themselves to conversations as viewers develop strong opinions and attachments with the contestants. On the digital platform, they get a ready medium to start and engage in social conversations instantly and that to me is one of the key aspects that would shape the consumption of reality shows on the digital medium.

Does a show like The Remix directly compete with talent shows on TV ?

The way things stand now, I don’t think shows like The Remix directly compete with talent shows on TV since popular TV talent shows have been around for multiple seasons and have their own loyal audience.

Television viewing in India is still largely driven by appointment viewing and talent shows on TV garner viewers who come to a particular channel for their weekly dose of non-fiction entertainment.

However, this viewer habit is rapidly evolving. Audiences are beginning to enjoy the benefits of ‘content on demand’. More and more people are beginning to consume even television content on the digital platform at their own will and convenience. This is already a common phenomenon with the youth and is fast permeating into other audience segments too. Keeping in mind this trend, I feel in the near future, shows like The Remix will become direct competition to talent shows on TV.

The focus these days is on regional content. Are you planning to come up with any regional content ?

We have always been excited about regional content and one of GreyMatter’s most interesting projects has been the live coverage of the Celebrity Cricket League which we produced with eight customised regional feeds.

The Remix as a format very easily lends itself to regional adaptations and we are looking forward to explore this exciting possibility.

Is the viewership on TV at the 10.30 pm slot low because of the lack of content ?

There could be a variety of reasons for a dip in viewership for the 10:30 pm slot on TV and lack of good content could be one of them.

A closer study of viewership and programming data or a sharply directed market research would be required to arrive at a conclusive reason for this observation.

Amazon Prime blends East, West in ‘The Remix’

MUMBAI: Amazon Prime Video wants to hit the right chords with the music lovers of India. Its latest and third Indian original prime show The Remix wants to grab the eye of the music-loving spirit of the nation.  It is a spin-off challenge between DJs and singers to blend Indian and western music beats including regional songs. The Remix will launch as a 10 episode series starting 9 March 2018, with two episodes launching together followed by one every week.

Till now, music reality shows were restricted to the television but this time it will be a digital-only appearance. The show is created and produced by Greymatter Entertainment while T-Series is the music partner. The success of previous showsInside Edge and Breathe gave Amazon the spirit to come up with a new one in a short time.

In the new show, according to Amazon Prime Video India director-content Vijay Subramaniam, popular music will be re-imagined by singers and DJ duos, which has never been attempted in the space of reality. He said, “With The Remix, we’ve taken two things that Indian customers have told us they love – reality TV and Bollywood music and made a unique show that we hope will appeal to the whole family. With the launch of this show, we are set to give 10 dynamic musical duos an opportunity to present their unique talent to a global audience.”

He goes on to say that today is the era of fusion and music was the perfect medium to launch an unscripted original series. “With ambient sound and Indian instruments coming together we feel The Remix as a show will perfectly reflect the blend,” he highlighted.

Amazon will follow the same release format like Breathe. The strategy of releasing Breathe on weekly basis has worked out well with Amazon according to Subramaniam. “The staggered release allows more consumers to come in and engage over a period of time versus binge watch,” he said.

The multimedia marketing campaign will soon commence but Subramaniam believes that since the show is about music, there will be much activity on social media.

The contestants of the show will be judged by popular singer Sunidhi Chauhan, national award winning music composer Amit Trivedi, and king of the DJ console Nucleya, while the element of humor will be added by Karan Tacker as the host of this digital reality series.

The contestants of the show are a mix of singers and DJs. Among the singers, they have Anirudh Bhola, Rashmeet Kaur, Sreerama Chandra, Rupali Jagga, Thomson Andrews, Prakriti Kakar, Akasa Singh, Sonam Topden, Yash Narvekar and Manasi Scott. And, in the talented DJs, they have Megha Kawale, SuReal, Candice Redding, Nawed Khan, NSG, Kiran Kamath, Skip, Rink, Kryll and Akhil Talreja.

The competition features fusions of multiple genres of music from trap mixed with bhangra, to future bass mixed with East Asian sounds, from blues to desi beats and much more. The contestants explore different themes like ambient sounds, retro remixes, live instrumentation, sounds of India, global beats and more in each episode. Over the course of ten episodes, one team will be crowned the winner who will walk away with a booty of Rs 50 lakh.

The Remix is the second original releasing in 2018 after Breathe and Amazon is planning to launch 10 originals in all this year.

Amazon is keen to creep into every aspect of what makes an Indian viewer tick and it is leaving no stone unturned for it.

  • Greymatter’s ‘The Remix’ makes it to Fresh TV’s ‘Top 25 Formats’

Greymatter’s ‘The Remix’ makes it to Fresh TV’s ‘Top 25 Formats’

MUMBAI: Greymatter Entertainment’s new music reality format The Remix is creating waves. The format, which has been produced by the Vietnam based Cattiensa and is aired at VTV3 in Vietnam, has been garnering not just television ratings, but also generating a lot of social media buzz.

The ten episode show, in the first two weeks generated close to 43,000 discussions among viewers. Not only that, the live show has generated a 10 plus rating in Vietnam and close to 5.5 million views per episode on YouTube.

The rising success and the uniqueness of the format has helped it in getting chosen by Fresh TV for the ‘Mip top 25 formats to watch out for.’

“We had created the format two years ago, and Vietnam showed interest in it and thus got it first,” says Greymatter director Rahul Sarangi.

Sarangi is overwhelmed as it is the first time an Asian format has made it to the Fresh TV top 25 format list. Talking about the format he says, “It is a music talent show, wherein the winner gets a million dollars and a chance to shoot with a record label. There are two performers in each team, wherein one sings while the other composes the music. There are four judges, who give a song of their choice to the performers, who then have to remake it and perform.”

Every week sees an elimination, which comprises 50 per cent points from the judges and 50 per cent votes coming in through SMSes.

“The interesting part of this show, unlike the others like X Factor, Got Talent etc is that it is Live and not deferred even by a second,” informs Sarangi.

Another differentiator, according to Sarangi is that the entire set is a LED Box, which changes with the mood of the song. “The set is customized and sees a changed setting and graphics along with the songs,” he says.

This $2 million property airs two hours of programming per episode. “We are the format owners of the show and have done the set designing, the graphics and the whole packaging of the reality programme, the finale of which will be aired on 12 April,” informs Sarangi.

The format has also been sold to a French production house. “The format has become a big success and we are in talks with production houses from Australia, Philippines, Indonesia and the US who have shown interest in the format,” he adds.

Sarangi opines that it is time that Indian broadcasters too get into airing live reality shows. “We are always working towards global ideas and would like to bring these ideas to India as well,” concludes Sarangi.
