20th Century Fox’s home video releases to support 4K & HDR

NEW DELHI: Going one up on the Blu-Ray format, 20th Century Fox is now gearing up to master all of its future movies in Ultra HD (UHD) and high dynamic range (HDR) for home entertainment, which is in compliance with the UHD Alliance’s HDR specification.

The move comes even as the number of 4K televisions is on the rise globally. Some of the movies that the studio will release in the format are X-Men: Days of Future Past and The Maze Runner.

According to a report on The Hollywood Reporter, Fox is already releasing some HDR titles using Samsung’s proprietary S-UHDTV displays. However, it seems Fox will adopt the standards embraced by the Blu-ray Disc Association for future planned releases.

HDR delivers a much wider range of density and luminosity in the image. In very simple terms it means whites are whiter and the range of shadows in dark material much more visible. Viewers would instantly notice the clouds in the sky despite bright sunshine, and a much wider range of detail in shadows.

Star Movies gives the country a new secret to keep!

MUMBAI: On a mysterious Friday evening of  5 August  a throng of excited and eager movie fans gathered at PVR Cinema outlets in Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore to witness a never before seen initiative in India – The Star Movies Secret Screening.

An exclusive invite only closed door movie screening that gives the participating ‘secret keepers’ a rare opportunity to watch some of the biggest Hollywood movies weeks before its actual international release.

Everybody loves a secret, but how many can keep one? The experience began with Star Movies and a select few of their secret keepers. After Star Movies and their secret keepers popped the question to their followers, instant curiosity picked up and secret screening became the buzz word.

The would-be secret keepers had to visit a URL and request for a secret knock code. And once they receive the code, they need to enter it on the website to generate an invite for the secret screening. The experience continued at the screening and finally Star Movies and Fox Star Studios together unveiled the mega secret – The Maze Runner – screening weeks before its worldwide release.

The impact: Star Movies’ asked its viewers if they can keep a secret, they replied with an emphatic ‘YES’ that resulted in 30 million impressions and over 5000 mentions on Twitter. No wonder then, that #StarMoviesSecretScreening trended nationally.

On the occasion, Star India English Cluster general manager Kevin Vaz said, “At Star Movies we always believe in creating experiences for our viewers through strong engagement opportunities and high impact campaigns. We are proud to present a first-of-its-kind concept in India – Star Movies Secret Screening. A private screening of some special movies held only for a select few movie enthusiasts’ weeks before its worldwide release. We are happy with the overwhelming response and as always we will continue to constantly engage our audience with such immersive experiences.”

Fox Star Studios chief marketing officer Shikha Kapur said, “The Maze Runner has been getting great reviews worldwide. When you have a strong product like this, it is important to create evangelists out of audiences and this activity was aimed at doing so. We were sure that audiences would love The Maze Runner and hence confident of screening the film 2 weeks prior to the Worldwide release. We at Fox Star Studios try and push the envelope of marketing with every film. I think we were hugely successful as it took social media by storm & are proud to have partnered with Star Movies for this initiative. Given the responses we have got from the screening, we are confident the film will be received very well in India, when it releases on 19th September.”

MUMBAI: Here’s the review of the seventh book in the 10-part series that features books being adapted into Hollywood movies in 2014.

The Maze Runner – James Dashner

Imagine waking up one day in total darkness, unsure of where you are and unable to remember anything about yourself except your first name. You’re in a bizarre place devoid of adults called the Glade. The Glade is an enclosed structure with a jail, a graveyard, a slaughterhouse, living quarters and gardens with no way out.

Outside the Glade is the Maze, and every day some of the kids, who call themselves the Maze Runners, venture into the labyrinth, trying to map and figure out the ever-changing pattern of the walls in an attempt to find an exit from The Glade, a place to them that now feels far worse than hell. So far, no one has figured a way out of The Glade. And not all of the Runners return from their daily exertions falling victim to the maniacal Grievers (part animal and part mechanical killing machines).

Enter Thomas, the newest arrival to The Glade. As soon as he arrives, unusual things begin to happen, and the others grow suspicious of him. Though the Maze seems somehow familiar to Thomas, he’s unable to make sense of the place, despite his extraordinary abilities as a Runner. Heavily influenced by famous sci-fi teen fiction like Ender’s Game and Lord of the Flies, The Maze Runner takes the reader on a roller-coaster ride through The Maze in this tale of survival, friendship and civilization.

On its arrival on the bookshelves, James Dashner’s The Maze Runner, book retailer Barnes & Noble included the book as part of its showcasing of new writers for the end of 2009 and the beginning of 2010. According to Wikipedia, The Maze Runner spent a year on The New York Times Bestsellers List. The Maze Runner currently stands at 3.98/5 of 151,708 ratings on Goodreads.

The live action motion picture adaptation of The Maze Runner stars Dylan O’Brien (Teen Wolf) as Thomas, Kaya Scodelario (Skins) as Teresa, Aml Ameen (Kidulthood) as Alby, Thomas Brodie Sangster (Game of Thrones) as Newt, and Will Poulter (We’re The Millers) as Gally and is directed by Wes Ball, who makes his full length feature film directorial debut with The Maze Runner with a screenplay by Noah Oppenheim (The Buried Life).

The Maze Runner will amaze Indian audiences 19 September 2014.
