  • A big night for ‘Breaking Bad’ and ‘The Big Bang Theory’ at 66th Emmy Awards

A big night for ‘Breaking Bad’ and ‘The Big Bang Theory’ at 66th Emmy Awards

MUMBAI: 66th Primetime Emmy Awards was a big night for Breaking Bad, The Big Bang Theory and Modern Family.

The awards opened with Jim Parsons winning his fourth Emmy in the lead actor category for his work as Sheldon Cooper on the CBS sitcom, The Big Bang Theory.  The 41-year-old actor plays the role of nerdy Caltech physicist Sheldon Cooper in the Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady-created series. Parsons beat William H Macy, Matt LeBlanc, Louis CK and Ricky Gervais in the category.

Cult drama series Breaking Bad was the other big winner of the night bagging the Emmy for Best Drama Series, while Game of Thrones went home with none of the big prizes despite garnering the most nominations. The series saw a fourth Best Lead Actor win for Bryan Cranston as chemistry teacher-turned-meth drug lord, Walter White aka Heisenberg. His co-star Aaron Paul took home his third Emmy win for Best Supporting Actor and Anna Gunn became a two-time Emmy Award winner for Best Supporting Actress in the show. Moreover, the now-departed, much beloved AMC series also took another Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing as well as Best Drama. The show won six Emmys in total.

Hit TV series Modern Family made Emmy history by winning the title of Best Comedy series for a record-tying fifth year in a row at television’s equivalent of the Oscars and has now tied the record set by NBC’s Frasier. Ty Burrell won the Best Supporting Actor for the comedy series, and the show also won a directing award.

Other significant Emmy Award winners included Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman for BBC’s Sherlock: His Last Vow as Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or Movie, as well as comedienne Sarah Silverman’s win for Variety Show Writing.

The Emmy Awards also held its traditional memorial tribute to industry members who have died in the past year. The presentation concluded with Billy Crystal giving a moving tribute to longtime friend and fellow comedian Robin Williams, who tragically committed suicide just two weeks ago.

Among the other notable winners, Julianna Margulies won the Best Drama Actress for The Good Wife, while Best Television Movie went to The Normal Heart about gay activist Larry Kramer’s work to raise HIV/AIDS awareness during the early 1980s.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus received her third consecutive Best Comedy Actress Emmy for the political comedy Veep on HBO. Shows like Netflix’s Orange Is the New Black and House of Cards, Showtime’s Shameless, and HBO’s True Detective neither benefited from tactical category choices nor garnered any Emmy Awards this year, despite their popularity and stellar storytelling.

‘The Big Bang Theory’ renewed till season 10

MUMBAI: CBS has announced that the critically acclaimed comedy The Big Bang Theory will get a multi-year broadcast renewal.  The show has been renewed for an additional three years, extending it through the 2016-2017 television season.

“Comedy is a big part of CBS schedule, and The Big Bang Theory is the biggest comedy force on television,” said CBS Entertainment chairman Nina Tassler in a press release earlier.

“This multi-year deal further strengthens our network’s position for future seasons and marks another chapter in the great partnership CBS enjoys with Warner Bros. Television for delivering audiences the best in comedy. We’re proud to work with and showcase the incredible talents of Chuck Lorre, Steve Molaro and this amazing cast every week,” added Tassler.

The Big Bang Theory, which premiered in September 2007, has been television’s number 1 comedy show amongst viewers since 2010-2011 and continues as the number 1 comedy in key demographics for the second straight season. This season of The Big Bang Theory is averaging 19.79 million viewers, making it the highest-rated non-sports programme in all demographics.

In addition to being a ratings success, the programme has earned critical acclaim and award recognition. The series has won Emmy Awards for “Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series” for star Jim Parsons (2010, 2011, 2013), a People’s Choice Award for “Favorite TV Comedy” (2010, 2013, 2014), Television Critics Association Awards for “Outstanding Achievement in Comedy” (2009, 2013) as well as “Individual Achievement in Comedy” for Parsons (2009). • English entertainment that tickled TV viewers in 2013!

English entertainment that tickled TV viewers in 2013!

MUMBAI: Life would be so boring without TV, ain’t it? As we bid adieu to the year 2013, we look at the comedy shows that kept us entertained throughout the year.

    Modern Family

The show, presented in the mockumentary style, has become almost complacent in its greatness. The writing and acting are so consistent and good that one can’t think of missing the episodes. It’s almost disappointing that the show can’t seem to get any better. But that’s the trouble when you set such a high bar of quality.

    The Big Bang Theory
Many awards have been given to Jim Parsons (and for good reason). The supporting performances are just as good. Simon Helberg has kept his comedy while becoming far less creepy now that he’s married and has also been to the outer space. Raj’s romantic woes were a surprisingly serious spiral of depression all season. And the women have been fantastic, especially when they spend time together. There’s a good reason for this to be one of the most-watched comedy on TV.

    2 Broke Girls

In its third season, the life of the two waitresses in their mid twenties—Max Black and Caroline Channing , seems to have become more interesting. From the selection of the cast to the writing is simply outstanding. In addition to Kat Denning’s brilliant comic timing, her character’s chemistry with Caroline is worthy of a mention.

    Two & A Half Men

Finally, the show went back to its old days with good jokes. Walden finally turned into a fan character, while Jon Cryer’s remains irrestible as Alan.

    How I Met Your Mother

After a lackluster season eight, HIMYM rebounds magnificently with this ninth season. Criston Meloti as The Mother is perfectly cast, and adding her to the cast is a shake-up that the show desperately needed.
