AXN unveils identity of the Indian team for ‘The Amazing Race Asia’

MUMBAI: One of the action oriented channel AXN’s on ground initiatives for this year is The Amazing Race Asia. The initiative kicks off on the channel on 9 November 2006 at 11 pm and the channel has revealed the ten teams selected to race around Asia and beyond for the $100,000 prize.

The show was shot earlier this year and cost millions of dollars. For the uninitiated, the show sees couples travelling across the Asia through specified modes of transport. Each couple is linked by a relationship like husband and wife, brother and sister.

AXN adds that the initiative reached a broad spectrum of people from various Asia countries, cultures and different walks of life since the call for participation that was made in February 2006. Some begged, some bragged, some even cried, just to attract the eyes of the selection committee. It was a tough process, but after much deliberation, a diverse group of contestants living in different parts of Asia, of various backgrounds and life experiences were thrown into the mix to outrun, outsmart and conquer in the race.

Out of more than 10,000 applications from all over Asia an Indian team comprising of male models Prashant Raj Sachdev and Sahil Shroff were chosen and they will compete against nine teams from Asia to win that coveted prize of fame and money. The teams will be travelling around Asia and beyond where language barriers, time constraints and foreign environments become too hot to handle.

The show’s host Allan Wu says, “The producers definitely took the time and did their homework to select the most diverse, entertaining, and controversial batch of contestants for our first season. Expect to see the usual tantrums and arguments between teams and teammates. Furthermore, expect to see clashes that you’ve never even seen on the US-version. Our contestants are from all over the region and not just one country so you are definitely going to see some major drama and rivalries.”

SPE Networks – Asia GM Ricky Ow says, “The participants are the key drivers of any challenge-reality show with the humor and drama that they create onscreen. Viewers will definitely not be disappointed by our selection of the contestants. They are a colourful and vibrant mix that will truly make The Amazing Race Asia an exceptional and really unique first-of-its-kind viewing experience for Asia viewers.”

Over 1000 teams apply for AXN’s ‘The Amazing Race Asia’

Applications reveal the passionate, adventurous and crazy side of Asia

Mumbai, 10 April 2006 – AXN’s The Amazing Race Asia looks set to feature some of Asia’s most passionate and colourful characters, after registration for The Amazing Race Asia closed on 31 March. AXN received over one thousand applications from all corners of Asia, including Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia, Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, India, Korea, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Brunei and even Nepal.

The hopeful applicants come from a broad and fascinating cross-section of Asia. From rich businessmen to people who need a new start in life, and from young students to the elderly, the applications revealed that people from all walks of life have gone to extreme lengths to compete in The Amazing Race Asia.

Hopeful contestants stripped, danced, cried and begged for the adventure of a lifetime, demolishing the myth that Asians are conservative and reserved when it comes to television.

Applicants performed crazy stunts, acted out Amazing Race fantasies, and bragged about past glories in their videos, which brought out the creative and quirky side of Asia, and demonstrated the passion Asians have for The Amazing Race Asia.

The application process also showed that the digital revolution has well and truly taken hold in Asia. More than a third of the applications were shot and edited professionally, and the AXN application committee was incredibly impressed by the quality of the video applications. The videos were so entertaining and inventive that they would make a fantastic program on their own.

Potential amazing racers also gave some intriguing reasons why they want to take on the challenging race, guaranteeing there will be plenty of personal drama as The Amazing Race Asia unfolds. For example, some teams are couples who want to revive the love in their relationships, while others want to use the race to rediscover themselves. For some, the race would be a once in a lifetime chance for challenge and adventure.

“The response has been amazing, and AXN wants to thank everyone for the tremendous effort they have put into their applications, and for the passion they have shown for The Amazing Race Asia,” said Ricky Ow, General Manager of SPE Networks – Asia.

The 10 to 12 teams who will compete in The Amazing Race Asia will be cast by the end of April.

  • AXN to hold video shoots for applicants of The Amazing Race Asian edition

AXN to hold video shoots for applicants of The Amazing Race Asian edition

MUMBAI: For the niche English entertainment channels the challenge this year will be to hook audiences better by offering a 360 degree experience.

The action oriented AXN has done that succesfully over the years with efforts like Extreme Dhamaka and Hot ‘N’ Wild. This year it is doing an Asian version of the reality show The Amazing Race.

Last month indiantelevision.com had reported that AXN was on the lookout for participants to join the show. Ten to 12 teams will be selected from across Asia to participate in the race, which will be produced for a 13-episode television series.

Now the channel has announced that it has extended the application deadline. It is also holding open video shoots to help people make their application videos.

Interested applicants can visit AXN’s website to find out the locations for the video recording services. The shoot will be conducted on 25 March 2006 and interested applicants can register their interest by 22 March online. Basically the channel is looking for teams with the chemistry, attitude, personality and the X-factor needed to conquer this gruelling race.

SPE Networks GM Ricky Ow explains that the initiative is in line with the channels aim to give adventure-seeking audiences in Asia their best chance to experience the adventure of a lifetime. “So we decided to help them out by holding open video shoots and giving them some more time to apply. The open video shoots will add a lot of fun to the process.”

Ow is also satisfied about the response to date. “So far, nearly 10,000 application forms have been downloaded from our website and we cannot wait to select some outstanding teams that will demonstrate the passion of Asians in a show that will surely excite and surprise viewers. The diversity of language and cultural practices in Asia will add a colourful mix of sensational drama and action, as we have seen in some excellent audition videos so far.”

AXN further says that it has received many enquiries from potential contestants, one of the common ones being the need for both team members to have international driving licenses. The channel says that The Amazing Race Asia is a challenging adventure and contestants will need to drive through all kinds of conditions and over great distances. While the producers will accept entries where only one member can drive, applicants are still strongly encouraged to form teams with two drivers in order to be competitive.
