Tonic Worldwide launches TWIP – a video programming division

MUMBAI: Tonic Worldwide, an independent digital agency has announced the launch of (TWIP) Tonic Worldwide Intuitive Programming, an exclusive data driven video programming division which will enable brands leverage data better for creating snackable video content.

This follows the launch of Gipsi in 2019, the AI and HI driven research division at Tonic. TWIP is a video content practice which will be powered by Gipsi’s data driven dashboards and insights.

With more than thousands of pieces of content being discovered by a user across platforms on a daily basis, brands are struggling to get noticed and engaged. With the launch of TWIP, brands will be able to produce intent based content, which means content that consumers are looking for, rather than the other way around and content that will resonate with the TG.

Tonic Worldwide chief business officer Sudish Balan said, “These are rapidly changing times with video taking up most of the content in digital media. Campaign bursts by brands will have to be supplemented with a more consistent approach to get discovered when consumers are looking for the content and publish these videos almost on a daily and weekly basis. With TWIP, we intend to power brands with a consistent and continuous video led programming approach, which will be less expensive and generate more effective leads.”

Star Pravah chalks out marketing strategy to promote new look

MUMBAI: The blue has given away to silver with a red streak and that is how Star Pravah aims to align itself with its parent network Star India. Starting 3 February, the channel came up with a fresh look with a new logo, tagline and a completely different philosophy.

The new tagline ‘Swapnanna Pankh Nave’ (dreams have new wings) is to indicate that the focus is shifting towards a younger female audience. Three new shows launched are also promoting its new philosophy that of encouraging modern young Maharashtrian women to channelise their dreams. “The fiction shows we are coming up with talk about individualism of women. They aren’t regular saas bahu shows. Our story characters will support the tagline,” says Star Pravah creative head Jayesh Patil. The current shows are also going to have tweaks introduced soon to suit the younger CS 15+ SEC A B C audiences as opposed to the earlier universal audience.

The three new shows are Be Dune Daha (produced by Dashmi creations), Lagori Maitri (Endemol India) and The Supriya Sachin show- Jodi Tujhi Majhi (produced by Sachin Pilgaonkar). More shows are slated for a mid April launch. Lagori Maitri has replaced Swapnanchya Palikadle at 8:00 pm while the latter has been shifted to 6:30 pm due to stagnant ratings. Be Dune Daha at 9:00pm has replaced Ambat God which has been taken off air. “We are looking to target a slightly more upscale audience. We have also altered the broadcast design by bringing in different visual grammar and stay away from the traditional way of storytelling,” says Star Pravah channel head Prem Kamath.

Promotions of the new look have already begun in its marketing campaign and will run till mid next week. The focus of the campaign, created majorly by an in-house team, is outdoor and TV and not the usual print medium. Both BTL and ATL activities have been used across Mumbai, Pune, Nashik and Nagpur for which sources say Rs 5 crore has been spent. “Given the exposure on TV, print wasn’t bringing additional reach,” says Kamath.

ATL activities involve promoting it predominantly on Star Pravah and network channels as well as some other Marathi news channels like IBN Lokmat, ABP Majha and TV9 Maharashtra. Outdoor promotion is focussed in metros and 1 million plus towns in Marathi localities tipping more towards using stations than hoardings. An OBD service has been created inviting people to sample their new shows by making telephonic calls to them which will have recorded voices of the protagonists.

The BTL campaign specifically involves a Mentorship Programme that will begin by 1 March for women who have dreams to achieve something in various fields. Five women from various cities will be selected after a round of entries. They will be brought to Mumbai for a day and given training by mentors from the profession they want to enter. The TG for this outdoor activity is women in the age group 18 to 34 years, both single as well as married. The first edition of this month long activity will be telecast somewhere in April. The radio medium will be used to call out entries for this event.

Although the channel was aiming to refresh itself some time ago, it only took complete shape now. Soon, old shows will be giving way to new, modern and younger shows. Seems like even the regional channels are looking to tap the youth quotient of the country.

Fastrack launches helmets; eyes revenue of Rs 500 crore

BENGALURU: Titan’s urban youth brand Fastrack announced the launch of a new category – helmets in Bengaluru. The new range will see 24 different variants for ‘guys and girls’ in different colours and graphics, making them a style-essential for its TG. Titan plans to include a range of bicycle headgear and accessories in the near future.

Fastrack, which was launched in 1998, has seen revenue growth of more than fifty times from Rs 30 crore to Rs 770 crore, hence making it the largest fashion accessories brand in the country, claim Titan officials. By the end of this fiscal in March 2014, the company expects revenue of just Rs 8 to 10 crores from the helmet stream and about Rs 50 crore during FY-2014-15.

We are looking at revenue of about Rs 500 crore from this stream over the next five years, says Titan managing director Bhaskar Bhatt

The company says that the present size of the organised helmet market which constitutes about 45 per cent of the overall market is Rs 400 crore in India and is estimated to grow to about Rs 1500 crore over the next five years. “We are looking at revenue of about Rs 500 crore from this stream over the next five years,” reveals Titan managing director Bhaskar Bhatt to www.indiantelevision.com.

“India has one of the highest numbers of two-wheelers in the world. With unorganised players currently driving the helmet business, the category has a large potential in the market. We are trying to buck the trend – even if a person doesn’t want to buy a helmet, she or he will buy it because it’s from Fastrack, because we believe that it is not the helmet that the person will buy, but brand Fastrack,” Bhatt further adds.

For the present Fastrack helmets will be sold through the 147 Fastrack stores across the country. Titan plans to increase the number of Fastrack outlets to 200 by 31 March, 2014. The company also plans to sell helmets online through its own portal as well as other fashion online retailers such as Myntra, Jabong, etc., in the near future.

“We are looking at outdoor promotions over the next few months. We’ll probably launch a multimedia campaign including TVCs sometime in the near future,” informs Titan Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer Ronnie Talati. Lowe Lintas handles the creative duties and Maxus the media buying for Fastrack.

Company sources peg the outdoor Fastrack helmets campaign at about Rs 2 crores till the end of this fiscal, and then depending upon the response, will chalk out a campaign for the next year.

“Being in the business of youth fashion accessories, helmets were a natural extension for us after watches, sunglasses and bags. Many of today’s youth use protective gear to make bold fashion statements. The youth being the dominant consumers for the category, launching the helmets range under the Fastrack umbrella would help keep a firm grip on the capricious youth market,” adds Talati.

DDB Mudra releases Youth Report 2013

MUMBAI: DDB Mudra Group has released its maiden Youth Report themed on “Beauty Money Sex Love Faith Substance”, the six entities which most acutely influence the choices and aspirations of urban young Indians.

“Our role has been to merely curate the content so as to ensure the insights are raw and relevant. We have further ensured the focus is on the core thought process that goes behind brand decisions which is more sustained so that the data can be of use to marketers while developing their communication” explains DDB Mudra Group chief operating officer Pratap Bose.

The report, unlike any other, has been collated by a panel of 40 college students, who themselves are a part of the TG, across five major cities including Mumbai, New Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai and Kolkata.

“This report also features our six mindset archetypes, a proprietary tool we use to cut through conventional SECs to better understand youth buying behavior given the diversity and continuous evolution of this TG,” adds the agency’s chief youth marketer Samyak Chakrabarty.

  • Bindass climbs the rating ladder with content that connects

Bindass climbs the rating ladder with content that connects

MUMBAI: It seems content and digitisation has helped Bindass in a big way. The channel climbed the TV ratings ladder in week 46 of TAM TV ratings with 20,533 GVTs, leaving its rivals MTV and Channel [V] far behind with 14,160 and 16,576 GVTs respectively.

“Both our content as well as digitisation has helped our channel to a great extent. It has helped us reach out to our core TG which is the youth,” says Disney executive director content media networks Indrajit Ray.

Digitisation, according to Ray, has led to democratisation of channels. “Earlier there was limited penetration of channels and thus only the popular channels with better resources could reach every household. Digitisation has helped us to increase our reach,” he says.

According to the ratings provided by Bindass, the top five shows for the week in the youth space were: Yeh Hai Aashiqui (1,852 TVTs), Channel [V] Gumraah Season 3 (1,056 TVTs), Emotional Atyachaar on Bindass (882 TVTs), MTV Webbed (628 TVTs) and [V] Crazy Stupid Love (208 TVTs).

The channel has been working towards improving its GVTs for a long time now. “It is not a week’s work, but a long process. The ratings are not a result of one single promotional activity,” remarks Ray, attributing the growth in ratings to Yeh Hai Aashiqui. He also informs that the channel’s team has formulated an aggressive plan to offer more. “Currently, we have two hours of original content, we plan to increase this,” he adds.

The growing number of GVTs is an indication for the channel that brand Bindass is being accepted among newer audiences. “We believe this was largely on account of its popular mass narrative based on youth themes,” remarks Ray, who also thinks that the channel has been able to strike a chord with its audience because the content reflects the thought of today’s youth in the best way. “Our content is a reflection of what the youth feels today. Relationships, which are the most important part of any youngster’s life has been underserved,” adds Ray, emphasising that Bindaas is a platform for many youngsters to raise their concerns on issues that interests them.

Talking about the reach, Ray says, “We have a fair equitable reach in the Hindi speaking market. We are strong in the north and now have also become popular in west and central India. Our core TG is between 15-24 years, but we do not restrict our programming to this age group. Our shows also cater to older people.”

Bindass, for Ray, is a channel that brings to the fore issues that are brushed under the carpet. “We do not sensationalise but reflect the truth,” he says with hope that the channel will continue to be on the growth trajectory.

  • Close Dentsu creates new campaign for Maruti Suzuki

Close Dentsu creates new campaign for Maruti Suzuki

MUMBAI: The campaign conceptualised by Dentsu Creative Impact aims to launch Stingray as a stylish, premium offering for the youth of today.

The agency’s approach for the campaign is to understand the audience well before the communication started. The youth who is experimental, always hungry for more and wants to make the most of his/her life. In a nutshell, he/she wants ‘everything’ from life.

On the campaign Harish Arora, NCD, Dentsu Creative Impact NCD Harish Arora said: “Pick any youth today and just peek into his car… you find Pizza boxes, cans, ties, shirts, shoes inside. Simply put, the youth today practically live out of their cars, the car is more than just a mode of transport, and it’s their world today.  Our idea was to take this insight to the next level and hence the idea – ‘My thing. Everything.’ We wanted our TG to see the TVC and relate with the various situations as each of them is a slice of his life.”

Two films were created for the campaign. Both the films showcase how Stingray plays many roles in the life of our youngster – it is his café, his disco, his wardrobe, his work station, his shack and so on.

Dentsu Creative Impact branch head Amit Wadhwa added: “We are talking to the ‘everything generation’. And the one partner for them in everything they do, are their cars. With Stingray being designed keeping the youth in mind, we brought it alive through the idea – everything about me packed in one.”

Apart from television, the campaign will be available on print, digital, outdoor, POS.

Maruti Suzuki India AGM (marketing) Thomas Cheriyan said: “Maruti being the leader in the automobile segment caters to a wide range of customers cutting across various markets and various segments. With the launch of the Stingray, which is a stylish, premium offering, we wanted to target the younger audience while retaining the core values of Maruti. The campaign has also been made accordingly, showcasing how the car fits into the life of today’s youth – work, personal life, friends, family etc.”

Dell launches campaign to inspire youth

MUMBAI: Dell India has kicked off a new ‘Celebrate Dell Se’ campaign for the festive season with the ‘Hint a Gift’ television commercial for its Inspiron series of Notebooks.

It aims to inspire youth to do kuch bhi to get a Dell Inspiron. The New Dell Inspiron TVC promotes its latest range of touchscreen laptops as the ultimate machine to fulfill the creative aspirations of the youth.

Dell India marketing director Ritu Gupta says: “Inspiring customers by providing them with technology that gives them “the power to do more” has always been one of Dell’s biggest goals. Building an emotional connection between our customers and technology is integral to Dell’s branding strategy. In line with our on-going Achievement “I can do kuch bhi” Campaign, we decided this festive season to inspire the youth with the idea that they have the power to get what they want by hinting to their loved ones on their preferred gift for Diwali, which in this case is the Dell Inspiron range of touch laptops.”

Grey Worldwide has conceptulaised the campaign and the creative team has tried to connect with the consumer on a much deeper and emotive level.

“When we looked at Dell’s core TG – the youth, and their changing dynamics, we had our task cut out. Today’s youth does not humbly accept whatever gift they get. They are willing to ask for a gift of their own choice, one that they believe will help them further their dreams and ambitions and achieve all they set out to do. Openly dropping hints to their loved ones about gifts they would prefer has become a common practice. It is this insight that inspired our communication idea. The result is our latest campaign – This Festive season, do kuch bhi to get a Dell Inspiron,” said Grey Bangalore group creative director Ram Jayaraman.

MTV dares to step out with ‘Rann VJ Run’

MUMBAI: Come 27 October, MTV will have a brand new adventure reality series for its viewers. The show christened Rann VJ Run is a genre-bending show that takes a look into the life of Rannvijay Singh like never before. The channel has roped in Woodland as the presenting sponsor and the show will be powered by Samsung Galaxy S4.

Produced by Anshuman Jaiswal, the 10-part series will follow Rannvijay as he embarks on an epic journey to discover new places, new sports, new cultures, new people and a new way of life. Each destination across the globe will see Rannvijay challenge himself into doing things that he always wanted to do but never imagined he could.

Speaking about the new show, MTV India EVP and business head Aditya Swamy exults: “We have always seen our favourite stars in charge and in control. But how often do you get to see the real person behind the star, that’s exactly what this show is about. The most real reality show which you will see, it captures what happens when a man challenges himself to the very limit. It’s not about how hard you fall but it’s how fast you will bounce back.”

Will the series work wonders for the channel? A media planner answers: “I don’t think the channel has made a right move by airing it on Sundays, where people are either busy with friends or family. The channel’s main target group (TG) is youngsters, but who will like to sit home on a Sunday in front of the television box and watch the series.”

He further goes on to say that: “As far as concept is concerned, it is quite interesting. Rannvijay is known as the face of the channel. But the time slot the channel has booked won’t give them the numbers it might be expecting. Let’s hope his fans churn out numbers for the channel.”

Thrilled at being part of the show, Rannvijay Singh says: “I am extremely delighted to be part of a project like MTV Rann VJ Run which makes me go that extra mile and challenge myself. I am not going to play against any opponents but myself. It will be just me and the game. This is one journey I just can’t wait to commence.”
The series will be air every Sunday at 6.00 pm.

  • Zee Cafe not running scared of competition

Zee Cafe not running scared of competition

MUMBAI: Zee Cafe is unfazed by the entry of newer players in the English entertainment space. The reason being that one of the pioneers in what was once a niche category follows the simple mantra of gauging viewer appetite coupled with the right marketing to stay ahead in the game.

Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited (Zeel) senior vice president and business head – niche channels Anurag Bedi puts it as, “The year has been fantastic for Zee Café as we are the undisputed leaders of FY 2013. Zee Café has been the number one channel in the genre for an average of 28 weeks, beating competition with a share of 21 per cent. Our key strengths have always been a strong line-up of world class content and dynamic marketing campaigns.”

Zee Café stakes claim of bringing popular international shows to Indian shores at the earliest. In keeping with this tradition, it plans to air Big Bang Theory season 7 and The Vampire Diaries season 5 starting November, very close to their US premiere, as well as House of Cards from early next year. The channel is aware that viewers today want to see fresh new shows as also the latest seasons of their favourite shows without much of a time lag.

Agrees Maxus India national director – insights Priti Murthy: “Viewers don’t want to wait and usually prefer to watch the latest content online. Therefore, the whole genre has to work towards getting this audience to its kitty.”

Earlier too, AXN’s business head Sunil Punjabi had told indiatelevision.com that people want to watch shows which are airing currently closer to their airing in the US and in the last one year, the channel has been doing this consistently – adding shows closer to their telecast in the US.

Spelling out who constitutes the target group (TG) of the new channel, Star India business head Kevin Vaz had said it is the most premium audience in India, comprising the one per cent of top Sec, A+ and between the age group of 20 to 35, indiantelevison.com had reported when Star World HD was launched.

To counter competition, Bedi believes in identifying what appeals to audiences and cushioning it with effective marketing. “Our competitors have lined up some of the best shows that America produces but no point if they are not marketed to Indian audiences correctly,” he says. Fragmentation is inevitable but “We have a strong relationship with our partners so we do not see competition as a threat and will continue to bring the best of English entertainment to Indian audiences,” he adds.

Zee Cafe’s strategy is not only to bring in soaps but also movies and live and exclusive telecasts of events from across the globe. “Zee Café caters to a premium and relatively niche audience, hence, there is no fixed format and we will continue to experiment with shows that fit with our TG,” points out Bedi, adding there are plans for an HD channel.

Speaking of marketing, the channel tied up with Eco roots to adopt trees for each pledge taken by viewers for the Green Turn initiative. Digitally too, it has undertaken several successful initiatives. “Our campaigns like Team Grey, Gossip Girl, Happy hour at 3,Tweet hour with the cast of The Mentalist built an immediate connect with our fans and have received tremendous response from them,” emphasises Bedi. The channel is looking forward to more innovative campaigns for upcoming properties like Big Bang Diwali and House of Cards. “We try to do something different each time to delight the audiences and we will keep on doing that,” says Bedi.

Murthy however feels Zee Café needs to be more aggressive in its approach to marketing. “The way other channels push their content, I don’t think Zee Café does in the same manner. One must understand, in the genre, there are only a few shows for the whole channel, unlike the Hindi counterparts, which is the sad part. Therefore, aggression is needed to cash in more on the growing audience that wants to watch international shows,” she says.

  • Zee TV’s &pictures launch to be followed by GEC Anmol

Zee TV’s &pictures launch to be followed by GEC Anmol

MUMBAI: Earlier this week, media offices went into a tizzy when a small pouch containing a fortune cookie and a chocolate box arrived at journos tables with just a tag ‘& coming soon.’ Additionally, an anonymous email arrived saying that &pictures has bagged the broadcast rights of upcoming film Chennai Express. No one knew who it was from; everyone was kept guessing.

On 1 August, the anonymous sender’s identity was revealed. A press release arrived from Zee TV proclaiming that it is launching a new movie channel christened &pictures. And it gave sparse details about the channel.

Now indiantelevision.com would like to reveal more about the initiative to readers: &pictures is currently being led by Zeel chief content and creative officer Bharat Kumar Ranga and is expected to launch a fortnight from now. And the target audience, well, it’s going to be young India, namely the youth. Hence, the channel will run films which excite them and which are not more than a decade old.

“But that doesn’t mean we will not show cult movies like Jo Jeeta Wohi Sinkandar. Even today youngsters can relate to movies such as these and enjoy them to the fullest. So, whatever our TG wants, we will give it to them,” clarifies the source.

The network is currently promoting the channel digitally keeping in mind that the TG is normally online 24×7. However, large-scale promotions and marketing activities will start only after the first week’s ratings, elaborates the source.

Indiantelevision.com has learnt that there is more in the offering from the Zee TV network. It is slated to launch another GEC in September called Anmol which is likely to be like Star Utsav, that plans to air re-runs of Zee TV shows like DID LiL Champs, Indias Best Dramebaaz, Afsar Bitiya, Sapne Suhane Ladakpan Ke, Punarvivah and Pavitra Rishta.

Moreover, the test signals of the channel have already started. Anmol has been added on Dish TV, running on channel no 103 via DD Direct Plus and has replaced 9XM (now on 670). The new channel has also launched its official Facebook page.
