Sony sets out IPO plans; seeks controlling stake in Ten Sports

MUMBAI: Sony Entertainment Television (SET) India is stepping up plans for an initial public offering (IPO). The company is looking at a period after the cricket World Cup gets over in April 2007, a source close to the development says.

The merchant bankers are yet to be appointed but the IPO plan is being actively pursued. “The board has approved an IPO plan, but subject to the capital market and other related conditions,” the source adds.

Sony is also in active negotiations to buy a controlling stake in Ten Sports. SET India already has the rights to distribute the sports channel in India. “The negotiations are on to acquire a majority stake. But nothing has been finalised yet,” the source says.

Ten Sports, it is learnt, is willing to part with a 50 per cent stake. No agreement has been reached on the valuation, the source says. It is worth noting here that a report put out by CNBC TV18 yesterday had said “the deal is believed to be worth between $ 55-60 million.”If this report proves correct, it would mean that Ten Sports has been valued at between $110 million to $120 million.

When contacted, Taj Television Ltd CEO Chris McDonald said the company was in talks with several companies for strategic partnerships. “There is no deal at this stage,” he added. On being queried whether the company was willing to part with controlling stake, he refused to comment on specific details. Dubai-based Taj Networks owns and operates Ten Sports.

SET India CEO Kunal Dasgupta denied that anything definite on Ten Sports or the IPO had been decided at this stage.

Zee Telefilms Ltd. (ZTL), which was in negotiations over a year back, has not resumed talks, a source in the company said. ZTL plans to bid for cricket rights like the ICC which will come up for grabs rather than buy a stake in Ten Sports, he says. Another reason that ZTL dropped any acquisition strategy in regards to Ten Sports is that the channel is already locked into a five-year distribution deal with the rival SET-Discovery One Alliance, the source adds. ZTL in any case runs Zee Sports, which is in the hunt for acquiring cricket properties to provide strength to the channel.

Taj Entertainment has mandated Ambit Corporate Finance to find a strategic investor. With Harish Thawani’s Nimbus preparing to launch a sports channel, analysts say the acquisition price would continue to be high with more broadcasters chasing cricket properties.

Ten Sports would require capital infusion even as the cricket properties it currently holds (Sri Lanka, West Indies and Pakistan boards) come up for renewal. By doing a distribution deal with Sony, it will be assured subscription revenues on a guaranteed basis.

“The buying into Ten Sports would be seen as a good time before the IPO,” a market analyst said.

SET India has also conducted a restructuring exercise which is seen as a precursor to a public float. The company recently acquired sister company SET Singapore. Though it had obtained clearance from the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) for this purpose a few years back, it had deferred this process as the proposed restructuring transaction would have attracted capital gains tax.

“Sony is keeping everything ready for the right time to hit the market,” the source says.

SET India had obtained clearance from the FIPB to acquire 100 per cent shares of SET Singapore through a share swap transaction. According to the proposal, one share of SET India would be exchanged for 16 shares of SET Singapore. Post-restructuring, 60.65 per cent of the SET India equity would be with the Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE) entities, 19.83 per cent with non-resident Indians and overseas corporate bodies, 7.68 per cent with foreign institutional investors and 11.84 per cent with Indian shareholders.

Taj Television is 100 per cent owned by Bukhatir Investments Limited, a UAE-based conglomerate with interests in banking, construction, real estate, trading, information technology, sports and broadcasting. Ten Sports is a sports channel which broadcasts in the Middle East, Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Maldives, Bhutan and Hong Kong.

  • Ten Sports to telecast IAAF Golden League 2006 live on 25 August

Ten Sports to telecast IAAF Golden League 2006 live on 25 August

MUMBAI: Ten Sports will showcase the IAAF Golden League 2006 live on Friday 25 August at 11:30 pm. The event is slated to take place at the 30th Memorial Van Damme in the Stade Roi Baudouin, Brussels, Belgium.

Following on from last Friday’s meeting in Zürich, the number of athletes in the hunt for the $1 million Jackpot has been reduced to four athletes who have a chance of six victories with two more still in line for a share of $500,000 jackpot for five victories, informs an official release.

Asafa Powell (100m), Jeremy Wariner (400m), Sanya Richards (400m) and Tirunesh Dibaba (5000m) all have four victories while Kenenisa Bekele (5000m) and Irving Saladino (Long Jump) both have three, going into Fridays meeting.

All eyes will again be on Powell who last weekend matched his 100m world record of 9.77secs and who is confident he can go faster by the end of the season. Powell said, “I’m just feeling very good. I knew it was something special, I just didn’t know how fast it was.”

In the men’s 400m Wariner looks to be as dominant as Powell in the 100m. The Texan has been winning his races this season by over a second and this is against top quality fields.

Wariner’s training partner Sanya Richards also has the perfect four victories to date in the women’s equivalent but knows that this year’s revelation, 22-year-old Bulgarian Vanya Stambolova, the recently-crowned European champion, will be looking to spoil the party, adds the release.

The final member of the quartet with four victories is Tirunesh Dibaba. The Ethiopian put in a dominant performance in Zurich last week but has compatriot Meseret Defar to contend with in Brussels and Defar recently beat on way to claiming the African title.

Champions League Action Live and Exclusive on Ten Sports

MUMBAI : Ten Sports coverage of the UEFA Champions League continues this Tuesday with action from the top games taking place on match day five.

Ten Sports cameras first head to Arsenal who began their campaign strongly but after two mediocre performances against CSKA Moscow find themselves with a nervous end to the campaign. The visitors to the Emirates Stadium are Hamburg who they gained a victory over in match day one but even if the Londoners repeat that performance they will still not be guaranteed a place in the final sixteen. Arsenal seemed to rediscover their form last weekend with a convincing win against Liverpool and they will be confident of victory, taking on opponents who have only managed one victory from their nineteen competitive matches this season.

The delayed game on Tuesday is “The Battle of Britain” with Scottish Champions, Celtic hosting Manchester United. A victory for the English side will secure their place in the final sixteen while a victory for Celtic would put them level with United at the top of Group F.

On Wednesday night Chelsea will be hoping to secure their place in the final sixteen by avoiding defeat at Werder Bremen. The English Champions battled back to earn a draw against Barcelona in their previous Champions League match and a draw would be enough for them on Wednesday. But the star studded Chelsea team will be hoping to go through in style with victory against their closest rivals in Group A.

Following after will be coverage of Inter Milan against Sporting Lisbon in their Group B clash. Inter find themselves in danger of crashing out of the tournament if they fail to win as only one point separates the two sides in second and third spot and Sporting have by far the easier tie in the final round of matches.

It is going to be a captivating two nights of football and it is all exclusive to Ten Sports.

  • TV channels undecided on apology scrolling

TV channels undecided on apology scrolling

NEW DELHI: The Indian government made it clear to TV channels yesterday that those guilty of breaching advertising code would have to publicly apologize, though channel managements are still undecided on future course of action.

The ministry of Information and Broadcasting has issued a warning to 43 channels directing them to carry a scroll for three days regretting airing surrogate advertisements of liquor and tobacco products in violation of rules.

The scroll to be aired reads thus: “Ministry of information & broadcasting issues a warning to X channel for telecasting surrogate advertisements of liquor/tobacco products in violation of advertising code. X channel regrets this and apologies for the same. We assure to be more careful in future.”

A gaggle of broadcasters, under the aegis of the Indian Broadcasting Foundation (IBF), met ministry officials on Friday in an attempt to seek a resolution to, what a broadcaster described as, “uncalled for public humiliation.”

The broadcast industry contention was that the government is unnecessarily objecting to ads of products and companies, which may have other legitimate businesses apart from tobacco and liquor products.

Moreover, with the ASCI now given more teeth to regulate ads put out by companies, broadcasters argued, running a scroll of apology for three days would amount to financial setback and space loss for important news alerts too.

However, the ministry officials were firm on their stand as, according to one of them, “too much pressure” was being exerted on the I&B ministry from parliamentarians who have criticized the ministry for inaction against surrogate advertising publicizing liquor and tobacco products on TV channels.

The channels issued show-cause notice will be required to carry the warning scroll round the clock for three consecutive days on their respective channel from 18-21 August 2006.

Still, the channels are undecided on future course of action and, according to information available, are also seeking legal advice on the matter.

The channels that have been issued the warning are Aaj Tak, Animal Planet, B4U, Balle Balle, Channel V, CNBC TV-18, Discovery, ESPN, ETV Bangla, ETV Kannada, ETV Marathi, ETV-2, HBO, Headlines Today, India TV, MTV, National
Geographic, NDTV 24X7, Raj TV, S S Music, SABe TV, Sahara Bihar, Sahara One and Sahara Samay.

The list also includes Set Max, Sony Entertainment, Star Gold, Star Movies, Star One, Star Plus, SUN TV, Tara News, Ten Sports, TEZ, TV-9, Zee Bangla, Zee Café, Zee Gujarati, Zee Marathi, Zee News, Zee Sports, Zee Studio and Zoom.

Rule 7(2)(viii)(A) of the Cable Television Networks Rules, 1994 states that “no advertisement shall be permitted which promotes directly or indirectly production, sale or consumption of cigarettes, tobacco products, wine, alcohol, liquor or other intoxicants.”

In an official statement issued today, the I&B ministry said apart from liquor and tobacco ads, certain objectionable and indecent advertisements of undergarments were also found to have been telecast, which should be stopped immediately.

Live action from The Tour Championship on Ten Sports

2nd November: The season ending TOUR Championship is now underway and Ten Sports has live action from the final three days.

The event, which is open only to the top 30 money earners on the tour, offers prize money of $6,500,000 with the winner taking home $1,170,000.

Tiger Woods and Phil Michelson are the only two big names missing from the star studded list which boasts seven of the world’s top ten players in the 27 man line up.

Last year saw a surprise winner in the form of Bart Bryant but he will not be there to defend his title as he failed to make it into the exclusive field this year. However previous winners including Chad Campbell, Vijay Singh and Retief Goosen will all be there looking to gain a second success in the event.

Another big name in the line up is Ernie Els who surprisingly only secured his place in the field with a dramatic finish in The Chrysler Championship. Despite not winning on the Tour for over two years The Big Easy could well be the man to watch out for as he has had four top ten finishes in the last six events.

And with his relaxed style his game is well suited the picturesque East Lake Course which is now the permanent home to THE TOUR Championship.

Ten Sports coverage begins at 23-30 IST on Friday.

Former SA opener Gary Kirsten replaces Dean Jones on Ten Sports’ ‘Straight Drive’ team

MUMBAI: The Unitech Cup, the tri-series between India, Sri Lanka and South Africa, gets underway on Ten Sports on Monday, 14 August 2006. The channel has announced that former South African opener Gary Kirsten will be a member of its ‘straight Drive’ team.

This announcement comes a few days after the channel terminated the contract of Dean Jones after the former Australian batsman inadvertently let out a remark calling a South African bowler a terrorist. In an official release the channel said, “The highly offensive nature of the comments has no place in cricket, sport and society as a whole and we deeply regret that such comments were broadcast.

“Ten Sports is owned by a citizen of the United Arab Emirates and the company employs a staff drawn from a diverse cross section of nationalities, cultures and religions. We have a zero tolerance policy for any expression of racial stereotyping and prejudice and condemn in the strongest possible terms the comments made by Mr Jones.”

Kirsten says, “I am very excited to be joining the team. It will be my first time on Straight Drive and I couldn’t have asked for a better series to be involved in.”

One major activity the channel conducted around this series was the Eleven To Lanka Contest. Basically, anybody could participate. All one had to do was take a picture of oneself along with 10 other people. They could be friends, family or total strangers. It then had to be sent to Ten Sports’ site along with a slogan that explained why your team should be chosen. The channel claims to have received 2,000 entries. The winners will be announced shortly.

Ten Sports to air WWE’s Great American Bash

4th August: WWE’s Great American Bash is set to explode on to TV screens across the country when Ten Sports airs exclusive coverage on Sunday, 6th August 2006 at 6.30 pm.

The highlight of the evening is sure to be Rey Mysterio’s defence of the World Heavyweight Championship against King Booker. The diminutive Mysterio is the most unlikely of Champions and is bound to face a stiff challenge from the experienced and much larger Booker. But Mysterio has faced up to just as daunting challenges before and prevailed and his agility and speed will undoubtedly force the challenger to dig deep if he is to claim the title.

The evening gets underway with WWE Tag Team Champions Brian Kendrick and Paul London taking on The Pitbulls. The Champions will have reason to worry as both have been defeated by the Pitbulls in individual match ups in recent weeks and they will have to rely on their superior teamwork to get them through.

Next up will be United States Champion Finlay who faces the challenge of William Regal and this is followed by Cruiserweight Champion Gregory Helms up against Matt Hardy.

The fourth match up on the card sees something completely new for WWE with the introduction of The Punjabi Prison Match between Undertaker and The Great Khali.

The structure these two fighters have to find a way out of is made up of two imposing bamboo prisons and only a perilous exit out and they have to escape whilst fending off their formidable opponent.

It’s a four way Bra and Panties match next with Ashley, Kristal, Michelle McCool and Jillian battling against each other to the delight of all the male fans.

After six months away Batista will be looking to unleash his wrath on Mr Kennedy. The animal of the ring will have added frustration built up as he was originally expecting to fight Mark Henry, the man who caused his forced absence all those months ago.

And then to wrap things up it’s the battle for the Heavyweight World Championship when King Booker hopes to finally get his hand on the coveted belt.
