    FIFA WC 2018 creates record of 250 mn Indian viewers

    MUMBAI: The 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia has broken viewership barriers with over 250 million viewers tuning in to the tournament in India. Telecast on Sony Ten 2, Sony Ten 3 and Sony ESPN channels and live streamed on SonyLIV app and website, it garnered over 250 million viewers across 64 matches played until the end of the tournament.

    According to the broadcaster’s report, repeats, surround programming, highlights and wrap around shows of FIFA World Cup 2018 have reached out to 254 million viewers this year.

    The 64 live matches of the FIFA WC 2018 have been watched by 110.5 million viewers across India on the Sony Pictures Networks. The top markets for the live matches were West Bengal with 22.2 million viwers, Kerala with 17.8 million, Maharashtra and Goa with 12.8 million and lastly Assam/North East and Sikkim with 11.4 million.

    The 2018 FIFA World Cup final match was watched by 51.2 million viewers, one of the highest for any FIFA World Cup match till date. Coming to the local language feeds which include Hindi, Malayalam, Bengali,Tamil and Telugu, they have reached out to 70.7 million viewers which is nearly 66 per cent of the overall tournament reach.

    The regional commentary also received viewership of 9.7 million in Kerala while West Bengal reached out to 10.7 million. There were 40.7 million viewers across India for regional commentary.  

    The 2018 FIFA World Cup also received 47 per fent of viewership from females, the highest till date.

  • Ten Sports: Sony Pictures Networks completes first phase of acquisition

    MUMBAI: Sony Pictures Networks India (SPN) and its affiliates have completed the first phase of a two-phase acquisition of the Ten Sports Network from Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited (ZEE) and its subsidiaries.

    Following the completion of this phase of the acquisition, SPN’s cluster of nine sports channels will now include:

    Sony Six and Sony Six HD
    Sony ESPN and Sony ESPN HD
    Ten 1, Ten 1 HD, Ten 2, Ten 3, and Ten Golf HD

    Certain other operations and assets will be included in the final phase of the acquisition, subject to certain closing conditions, which is expected to be completed in the next few months.

    SPNI CEO NP Singh said, “I am delighted that the teams from SPN and ZEE have completed this core phase of the transaction in good time. SPN is now equipped, better than ever, to offer its viewers premium sporting content with a sports portfolio that includes every major sport and many international as well as domestic leagues. We are now stepping into the integration process to facilitate a seamless transition.”

    ZEEL managing director Punit Goenka said, “Great job done by the teams from SPN and ZEE in facilitating the closure of this phase of the transaction.     Sony Pictures to acquire Ten Sports from Zee

    MUMBAI: Sony Pictures Networks India (SPN) today announced that SPN and its affiliates have entered into definitive agreements to acquire TEN Sports Network from Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited (ZEE) and its subsidiaries for 385 million U.S. dollars. Completion of the acquisition is subject to regulatory approval. The acquisition will add South Asia’s leading sports network to SPN’s existing portfolio of channels.

    The TEN Sports channels being acquired include TEN 1, TEN 1 HD, TEN 2, TEN 3, TEN Golf HD, TEN Cricket, TEN Sports that operate in several countries including the Indian sub-continent, Maldives, Singapore, Hong Kong, Middle East, Caribbean.

    TEN Sports holds broadcast rights to major cricket boards (South Africa, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, West Indies and Zimbabwe). In addition, Ten Sports holds rights to wrestling (WWE), football (UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, French League, English Football League Cup), tennis (WTA Events, ATP events), golf (European Tour, Asian Tour, Ryder Cup, US PGA Championship, LPGA Tour, Professional Golf Tour of India and Golf Channel Block), athletics (Asian Games, Commonwealth Games), motor sports (Moto GP) and cycling (Tour de France) events.

    MUMBAI: Rajesh Sethi lead sports expertise of Zee Entertainment Enterprise Limited, Ten Network which currently operates Ten Sports, Ten Action, Ten Cricket, Ten HD and Ten Golf is set to undergo a revamp.

    The network will now name its channels as Ten 1, Ten 2, Ten 3, Ten 1 HD and Ten Golf HD, “The decision has been taken to complement our wide portfolio of content. Instead of having one channel showing only cricket and one only football we will now switch and swap,” said a senior company official.

    Ten Sports will become Ten 1, Ten Action will become Ten 2, Ten Cricket will become Ten 3 and Ten HD will become Ten 1 HD. Ten Golf which the network recently converted to Ten Golf HD will continue to remain the same.

    “There will be a new logo and brand message which we will unveil soon” added the official. The new look will hit the television from 1 April 2016.
