  • Tata Pravesh’s new ad film ‘Raahi’ explores gender inclusivity in workplace

Tata Pravesh’s new ad film ‘Raahi’ explores gender inclusivity in workplace

Mumbai: On Friday, Tata Pravesh, a brand of steel doors and windows, launched a new campaign titled “Raahi.” The film aimed to bring exclusive focus on diversity and inclusion by highlighting the importance of an inclusive workplace.

Conceptualised by Wunderman Thompson Kolkata is purposefully set against a neutral corporate backdrop.

It tells the story of an LGBTQIA+ individual, shunned by society but who is accepted by colleagues. The film signs off with the strong social message, “Acceptance can open doors,” encouraging us to open our minds—”#KholoMannKeDwaar”—allowing the winds of change to air out our prejudices.

Shot by Happy Rabbit Films, the film encourages us to inculcate a sense of belonging in the workplace and make our LGBTQIA+ colleagues feel accepted, making them proud of us. It makes us stop for a moment and take cognizance of our biases, so we can work towards eliminating them.

This initiative has been lauded not just because it is innovative, but because it is also a progressive way for such employees to enter mainstream society, be embraced by all around them, and made to feel like a part of the larger corporate family.

Commenting on the creative concept, Wunderman Thompson, Kolkata vice president & senior ECD Arjun Mukherjee said, “We need to be sensitive towards our LGBTQIA+ co-workers and make them feel welcome at the workplace. This film encourages us to make them feel at home as our colleagues. It teaches us to build relationships based on love and respect, regardless of gender, so that no one ever walks alone.”

Wunderman Thompson, Kolkata senior vice president & managing partner Vijay Jacob Parakkal added, “Tata Steel is widely recognised for its trailblazing HR initiatives and Tata Pravesh for its thought-provoking films. This extremely relevant and topical film will encourage us to embrace LGBTQIA+ people, making them feel accepted and included in the workplaces of tomorrow.”

  • Air India rejig: N Chandrasekaran brings in key Tata Group personnel

Air India rejig: N Chandrasekaran brings in key Tata Group personnel

Mumbai: Tata Sons executive chairman and Air India chairman N Chandrasekaran on Saturday affected a major reshuffle in the top management of the recently-acquired airline in what is Air India’s first major senior management reshuffle since it was taken over by the conglomerate in January this year. Tata Sons senior vice president Nipun Aggarwal replaces Air India veteran Meenakshi Malik as chief commercial officer, while former Tata Steel VP- human resources Suresh Dutt Tripathi succeeds AI’s Amrita Sharan as chief human resources officer (CHRO).

Notably, the Tata Group is yet to appoint a chief executive officer of the airline.

The order was issued by Chandrasekaran, who is also the chairman of Tata Sons and comes on the back of the announcement of Tata Sons executive chairman N Chandrasekaran formally taking charge as chairman of Tata Digital earlier this week. He was reappointed as the chairman of Tata Sons for another five years in February this year.

Malik and Sharan were on Friday appointed as advisors to the CEO of Air India, according to a company communication to PTI. As the Tata Group is yet to appoint the CEO of Air India, the duo will currently be advisors to Chandrasekaran, it mentioned.

Satya Ramaswamy, who has worked at Tata Consultancy Services before, was on Friday appointed as chief digital and technology officer at Air India, the order stated.

Rajesh Dogra was appointed as the head of customer experience and ground handling at Air India, it mentioned.

Air India veteran RS Sandhu will continue to hold the charge of chief of operations at Air India, it noted.

Another Air India veteran Vinod Hejmadi will continue to hold the charge as chief financial officer, it mentioned.

“The new appointees will exercise the powers of functional/departmental heads as per the delegation of authority. We wish them all the very best in their new role,” Chandrasekaran stated in the order.

After a competitive bidding process, the government had in October last year sold Air India to Talace Pvt Ltd — a subsidiary of the Tata group’s holding company.

  • Tata Pravesh’s latest campaign empowers people to make wise choices

Tata Pravesh’s latest campaign empowers people to make wise choices

Mumbai: Tata Pravesh, from the house of Tata Steel, has launched a new campaign called #AloneButTogether to empower people for making wise choices in the face of the pandemic. Conceptualised by Logicserve Digital, the campaign showcases the power of an individual to drive positive influence.

Aligning with Tata Pravesh’s present positioning of ‘Akela Hi Kaafi Hai’, the campaign comprises of impact-driven Thumbstopper videos that aptly convey the message through simple real-life situations such as planning a wedding in the middle of the pandemic, our attitude towards people who deliver our necessities at home and illustrates how we can make an impact with a simple act.

Commenting on his vision for this campaign, Tata Pravesh’s chief – services and solutions, P Anand said, “This campaign is our attempt at communicating the importance of putting safety first, for yourself and for your loved ones, and making wise choices in our daily life; since we strongly believe that an individual is #AkelaHiKaafi for creating a positive impact. #AloneButTogether promotes the emotion of standing strong with one another by spreading empathy, kindness, and humanity and, encouraging each other to act responsibly.”

Shedding more light on the creative process of the campaign, Logicserve Digital’s SVP – creative, social, PR, marcom, Manesh Swamy said, “The pandemic is not over yet, and as a community, we have to be more vigilant and at the same time be humane. We realized that people don’t generally take it well when we correct them to behave in a certain manner during the pandemic. However, driving the message that every single individual can make a difference was essential. As things are opening up and people are getting back to normalization 2.0 with a scare of the third wave lurking around, we wanted to spread kindness and instill responsibility via these super short thought-provoking films. If you carefully look at the films, Tata Pravesh’s doors and windows are seamlessly integrated with these films and are playing an important role in driving this important message.”

  • Pride without Prejudice? Where do Indian brands stand on LGBTQ+ representation

Mumbai: Consumers today are less tolerant of brands that don’t take positions on emerging social issues. In the changing world scenario, consumers lean more towards brands that are open and transparent with their views. With more outlets for voicing their opinions about brand experiences than ever before, Gen-Z and millennials, in particular, want to know where a brand stands vis-a-vis causes they care about- like inclusion, diversity, and equity.

We are in the midst of the global Pride month, and IndianTelevision spoke to industry experts and brands to find out if brands believe in going the distance when it comes to LGBTQ+ representation and inclusion. Or are they treating it as a mere rainbow-hued label to be flaunted during such special occasions?

According to Dentsu Webchutney D&I and AVP – strategy lead, Freya D’Souza, consumers today sense and call out superficiality and ambivalence in terms of brand authenticity from a mile away. And while brands often have lofty mission and vision statements, in practice, most communication efforts sidestep potentially controversial issues. “In an age where there is an increasing sense of the personal becoming political, and our social and physical lives merging, a brand cannot afford to silo its values and communications anymore. A brand that takes a stand either way gets both bouquets and brickbats. But what also comes with that is incredible brand loyalty and a tangible sense of the consumer becoming a brand champion. For the LGBT+ community, this has cut both ways,” she says.

“There is still a long way to go,” says Modi Naturals chief marketing officer Shardul Bist, highlighting that India is a country where people have for long adapted to traditional mindsets and ideologies. While some great campaigns in the recent past have helped break the shackles, including the 2017 Vicks ad featuring transgender rights activist Gauri Sawant that depicts her struggles to adopt a child, Bist says that it must be an ongoing endeavour till our mindsets completely change. “The change is inevitable and it will alter and empower one mindset at a time”, he adds.

The Jewellery market in India has always been considered a niche area, predominantly promoted through campaigns featuring a big, fat Indian family wedding, revolving around a cis female protagonist. It took a fairly conservative regional brand, Bhima jewellers to pull down that barrier with its recent creative featuring a transwoman, Meera Singhania. The ad won critical acclaim for its authentic portrayal of the community along with oodles of love on social media.

And now taking it a step further is another jewellery brand with a legacy of over five decades. Senco Gold & Diamonds recently signed internationally acclaimed sprinter, Dutee Chand- who broke ground as India’s first openly homosexual athlete- as the company’s new brand ambassador. As a part of its Pride month celebrations, it has rolled out a new campaign and unveiled its new jewellery collection, named ‘Love is love Collection’ for the LGBTQ+ community.

However, this is not a first for the brand. Senco Gold and Diamonds CEO Suvankar Sen shared that the brand has always taken “a very progressive approach towards its jewellery as well as life in general”. In 2019 the brand had launched its ‘PRIDE Collection’ through a unique fashion show by a group of transgender men and women led by LGBTQ+ activist Dr.Manabi Bandyopadhyay.

According to DViO Digtal, founder and CEO Sowmya Iyer brands are becoming more aware and trying to keep up with consumer expectations to gain their trust. “As a marketer, I have seen campaign messaging and tonality highly evolve. From conservative to stereotypical to inclusive campaigns, we have come a long way. The beauty and fashion industries have been the torchbearers when it comes to being inclusive and slowly yet steadily every other industry is coming on board,” says Iyer.

Known for its range of men’s grooming products, Whiskers founder Aakash Goswami says the grooming brand, on its part, is trying to focus more on gender neutrality. “The first change we made was to change our brand name from Whiskers for men to Whiskers India. This is our very first initiative to support and be more inclusive towards society,” he adds.

Youth-centric e-commerce Fashion startup Beyoung aims to inspire all to “Be You” and believes that fashion is for all. “This is why we pay more emphasis on Unisex range and flaunt a collection for one and all”, says CEO & founder Shivam Soni. For this, the brand ensures that they do away with ‘idealistic’ body standards for models, irrespective of gender – be it “masculine bodies for men” or “slim” body types for women- thus getting rid of the pressure to conform to certain body types perceived as ideal.

Grapes Digital National Business head Rajeesh Rajagopalan, however, is sceptical about brand efforts. “Indian brands do a lot of work around LGBTQ but during the pride month only. We are still in a very conservative and nascent stage where brands are not that bold enough to take the call and feature them in regular campaigns. To a large extent, it is a mere label to be flaunted during the pride month, because marketers want to create a perception of inclusiveness. If you want to be an inclusive brand then you have to walk the talk in every move be it in the communication, brand representation, or models you choose,” he says.

Creative Director of 360-degree communication company Hotstuff, that specializes in BFSI space, Terence Dsouza feels that the industry can take the lead in not just using Pride month as a social media opportunity but going the distance with its offerings as well. “In India, ad campaigns and communication regarding financial planning has stereotypically targeted cis-heterosexual, married families. But what needs to be understood is that financial planning is important to every person, irrespective of sexual orientation or gender identity”, says D’souza.

According to Open Strategy & Design’s strategy head & managing partner Puneet Pandey, when brands choose to mirror these emerging sentiments and causes especially around gender, identity and sexuality, they would do well to consider that, “Your audience will be able to smell out tokenism – so go for empathy and authenticity. Instead of creating for the gaze of the outsider, speak to their inner song.” A subtle nod, a knowing acknowledgement, sometimes works more powerfully than dramatic spotlighting, he adds.

Last week, furniture brand Saraf Furniture announced its decision to hire upto 250 professionals from the LGBTQ+ community in the current financial year. “Organisations can profess to be inclusive only when everybody, from business pioneers to the cafeteria staff is sensitised,” says Saraf Furniture founder & CEO Raghunandan Saraf. “I was a little apprehensive at the beginning about the adaptability factor in the workplace but took a leap of faith. You have to get past those raised eyebrows, hushed whispers and initial resentment.”

On the brighter side, Indian companies are, slowly but surely, adopting a no-discriminative inclusion policy, as highlighted by a 2019 global analysis on how companies are treating members of the LGBT+ community. The study shows India Inc, including some of the marquee names like Reliance Industries, Mahindra & Mahindra, Godrej and Tata Steel, open to incorporating such policies.

In June last year, Mahindra Logistics launched its first policy for hiring and retaining lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and other queer people. Another major, Tata Steel aims to have 25 per cent of its Tata Steelworkers from diverse groups, of which, 5 per cent will be from the LGBTQI+ community.

This year, Chimp&z Inc too is celebrating the #PrideOfAdvertising – a content series that celebrates every queer-and-open/ out professional working in the advertising & marketing industry, says Chimp&z Inc associate VP Alin Choubey.

Two years after the landmark Supreme court ruling decriminalising homosexuality, members of India’s LGBTQ+ community still lag behind their western counterparts in terms of corporate representation and other benefits. Hence brands walking the talk on championing LGBTQ+ rights need to be lauded so that the current norm of gender-based branding gives way to the blurring of gender lines, eventually leading to a gender-free outlook in our society. It’s time brands stand up for “Pride without Prejudice”.

  • Brands tap into kindness & empathy, as Covid takes a toll

Brands tap into kindness & empathy, as Covid takes a toll

Mumbai: Nothing about our lives or the world we dwell in today is like what we knew it to be, till a little more than a year ago. This is perhaps a good enough incentive for brands and advertisers to adapt to the present world – Not ignore the elephant in the room and accept the irrevocable, undeniable truth of our reality today. After all, how long can the advertising world remain oblivious to the devastating changes brought by Covid-19 all around us.

Here are some brand campaigns which have chosen to take a different route as we endure a global pandemic. They have chosen to embark on the route of empathy, kindness, and most important of all, humanity:

Facebook India | More Together Hum Aaj Ek-duusre ka saath denge, toh ek behtar kal zaroor hoga. #MoreTogether

The campaign captures the grief and sense of loss many of us have gone through because of the devastation caused by Covid. However, it does not dwell on the grief for long, portraying brilliantly how a personal tragedy can transform an ordinary person into a do-gooder. While all of us watch out for the wellbeing of our loved ones, it’s only a few special ones who look out for others- not their own. It is this extraordinary message that Facebook’s latest ‘More together’ campaign brings out poignantly while also driving in the need to vaccinate oneself and the community we live in to make a safer world. The film succeeds in conveying a sense of hope and a sense of being in this together during these bleak times.

SBI Life Insurance: SBI Life #MummyKahanHain

The creative portrays a day in the life of a family in the new normal during the pandemic. It shows through the eyes of a child how she is initially upset to not have her working mom cater to her needs while at home, as the mother is busy working from home. For children, their mother is their sanctuary, and “#Mummy Kahan Hain” is the constant query thrown at the other members of the household if she’s missing for a moment. The heart-warming ad wonderfully depicts how during this pandemic, kids learned to adapt to ways of the new normal, and for every time that they asked #MummyKahanHain, they also realized the many hats a mother dons working from and for home. By the end, the child learns to truly understand and appreciate how a mother has an identity separate from motherhood.

Ariel’s ad of a transgender doctor Priya #MakeItPossible

Tough times never last, tough people do. Ariel’s new ad narrates the inspiring true story of Kerala’s first Transgender Doctor, V.S. Priya. Growing up in a conventional household and having lived all her life as a male, Dr. Priya took the bold and life-altering decision of embracing her feminine identity. Challenged by societal norms and stereotyped gender roles in families, she lived as a man for almost 30 years. Now, as Kerala’s first transgender doctor, she wants to be known for her work and is a beacon of hope not only for all transgendered people who want to be known for what they do but for everyone who continues to battle the odds and face impossible challenges. @Ariel India has been championing the cause of gender equality and celebrates these heroes who overcome the odds to #MakeItPossible.

TATA Steel Apno Ke Liye Aage Badho

It’s been just over a year since the pandemic changed our lives forever. While every festival that comes around brings a semblance of warmth and cheer, we need to remember the people who have lost their loved ones to this deadly nemesis. This film by TATA Steel celebrates and pays homage to the Covid warriors- those doctors and health workers who sacrificed their lives in the larger need of humanity. It reminds their loved ones to not stop living in their absence and celebrate the indomitable human spirit that fights against all odds and keeps moving ahead.

    Ashok Leyland  #AapkiJeetHamariJeet

One of the lessons the pandemic has taught us is the power and value of kindness of strangers. Ashok Leyland made a touching ad dripping with warmth, that shows how every celebration begins with caring and sharing. The film shows two people stuck up on a deserted road, with one of the person’s car breaks down. The video beautifully shows how sometimes it is important to rise to the occasion and go beyond one’s calling- purely in the name of humanity, empathy, and compassion. The underlying message being ‘Let us together spread positivity and goodwill.’

Colgate – Smiles always find a way

To sign off, here is a brilliant but simple concept by a brand that sells its product by displaying models with gorgeous smiles with the perfect set of teeth. However, in this International print ad, the brand chooses to demonstrate how truly warm smiles do not always need a perfect set of teeth. That, in fact, one can smile most warmly even by having a mask cover one’s face – the smile will find it through one’s eyes. Since the Covid-19 pandemic, face masks have become a part and parcel of our everyday lives. Gradually, we have got used to living with our smiles hidden behind a piece of cloth. But this Colgate print campaign, conceptualized by French agency VMLY&R, brilliantly conveys how you don’t need to see a smile to feel it. That a smile is more than just a curve- it’s a way of standing up and dealing with the adversities life throws at you. “Smiles always find a way”

Brands have an opportunity to shape a better, more accepting, and humane world and ads such as these hit us at a deeper level to be so. They go beyond mere advertising. And every effort accelerates a change, one step at a time.
