BSNL dials up pride with India’s first homegrown 4G telecom stack

MUMBAI: India has just made a call that will echo worldwide and it’s a truly Swadeshi one. BSNL, in collaboration with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), C-DOT, and Tejas Networks, has unveiled the Bharat Telecom Stack, a fully indigenous solution powering 4G and beyond, marking a historic stride towards a digitally self-reliant nation.

With this rollout, India joins an elite club of just five countries globally to have built a homegrown telecom technology stack. What makes it remarkable is the scale and speed the entire project, spanning 100,000 sites, was completed in just two years, making it one of the fastest 4G deployments worldwide.

Executed under a “mission mode” governance model, the project saw TCS establish data centres, integrate C-DOT’s EPC Core Application, and deploy Tejas Networks’ base stations and radio infrastructure, all stitched together with TCS CNOPS, a cognitive platform for 24/7 real-time network management. The rollout integrates seamlessly into BSNL’s existing 2G/3G systems, ensuring connectivity continuity while boosting capacity for the digital era.

For BSNL CMD A Robert J Ravi, the launch was more than technology, it was symbolism: “The nationwide rollout of our indigenous 4G network, built with TCS, Tejas, and C-DOT, is a resounding declaration of an Atmanirbhar Bharat. This ‘Made in Bharat’ stack secures our digital future and bridges the divide like never before.”

The technology isn’t just about speed or spectrum; it’s about sovereignty. By delivering ultra-secure, standards-compliant connectivity, the stack safeguards national security while democratising access enabling online education, telemedicine, e-governance, and citizen services for rural and urban India alike.

BSNL’s director (Consumer Mobility) Sandeep Govil highlighted its transformative potential: “This Swadeshi 4G technology, the result of innovation by C-DOT, Tejas, TCS, and BSNL’s workforce, is engineered for scalability. It is a cornerstone for a digitally inclusive society, ready to evolve to 5G and beyond.”

For TCS and Tejas Networks chairman N Ganapathy Subramaniam, the achievement reinforces India’s tech legacy: “We have put India on the map of only a handful of countries with a comprehensive, trusted, and software-upgradable telecom technology stack. The successful deployment at BSNL is historic, laying the foundation for India’s further contribution to global standards.”

The launch also reflects TCS’s longstanding role in shaping India’s digital infrastructure from modernising stock exchanges and passport services to healthcare and pensions for defence personnel touching millions of lives across decades.

With ultra-high bandwidth, energy efficiency (0.1 W/Gbit, 65 per cent lower than average), and intelligence boosting O&M efficiency by 40 per cent, the Bharat Telecom Stack is more than a national achievement. It is a signal loud and clear that India is ready to lead in telecom innovation, connecting every citizen while setting global benchmarks.

In short: India just built its own dial tone for the future and it’s calling the world to listen.

Calling the shots TCS and Vodafone Idea dial up AI for customer delight

MUMBAI: Hello, future calling! Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has struck a five year deal with Vodafone Idea (Vi) to rewire the telecom giant’s business support system (BSS) with an AI driven digital backbone designed for speed, smarts and seamless service.

At the heart of this transformation are TCS’ flagship platforms Hobs and Twinx. While HOBS will serve as the agile, stable and integrated foundation for Vi’s customer touchpoints, TwinX will inject intelligence with AI/ML driven analytics and scenario simulations. Together, the duo aims to fast track product launches, personalise interactions and deliver resilient performance in an industry where milliseconds matter.

For Vi, the stakes are high. The new platform promises to help the operator launch new products faster, adapt to evolving customer needs, and elevate service responsiveness. “With this partnership Vi is embarking on a transformative journey to redefine customer experience,” said Vodafone Idea Limited CTO Jagbir Singh adding that AI infused BSS will set a “new standard” in digital experiences.

The partnership builds on a 15 year relationship between TCS and Vi, anchored in TCS’ 25 plus years of expertise in the communications, media and information services sector. Operating out of 105 delivery centres, TCS supports over one billion telecom subscribers across 45 countries, a scale that few IT majors can match.

“By leveraging our advanced AI capabilities and flagship products, we are committed to transform customer engagement and operational efficiency for Vodafone Idea,” said TCS president & country head for India Business Ujjwal Mathur.

Beyond customer delight, TCS has positioned the programme as part of its larger “Made in India, for India and ready for the world” vision, with sustainability, sovereignty and security woven in.

As India’s telecom sector braces for the next digital leap, this tie up underscores how technology heavyweights and telcos are dialling up AI not just to connect millions, but to reimagine what a call, a click or a customer interaction should feel like.

HTCS checks out with 40 million dollars savings in Warehouse digital revamp

MUMBAI: When retail meets reboot, the savings add up. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has inked a strategic partnership with New Zealand’s The Warehouse Group (TWG) to modernise its technology backbone unlocking up to 40 million dollars in licence and managed service cost savings over five years.

The tie-up will see TCS consolidate platforms, trim technical debt and sharpen efficiencies across TWG’s end-to-end retail chain, from merchandising to supply chain. But it’s not just about cost-cutting: the IT giant will also help upskill TWG’s workforce in digital and AI capabilities, setting the stage for smarter, faster, and more resilient operations.

TWG Group CEO Mark Stirton called the deal “a significant step forward” after a year of belt-tightening. “TCS will build on our current cost initiatives and unlock the capability and capacity to obtain more value from the technology investments we’ve made to date,” he said.

For TCS, which already partners with the world’s top 10 retailers, the pact underscores its growing footprint in New Zealand. The company has been active in shaping the region’s digital future, from launching the Asia Pacific Digital Sustainability Index in 2022 to running STEM empowerment programmes like GoIT and GoIT Girls to inspire the next generation of innovators.

Armed with AI-powered platforms like TCS Omnistore for unified commerce and TCS Optumera for data-led merchandising, the consultancy brings both scale and smarts to the table. Tata Consultancy Services president for growth markets Girish Ramachandran summed it up: “We are committed to supporting one of New Zealand’s most iconic retail brands in streamlining systems and enhancing capabilities through AI adoption laying the foundation for sustained, long-term value creation.”

With efficiency, innovation and sustainability stitched into its plan, TWG’s latest retail chapter promises to be more than just business as usual, it’s retail therapy for the digital age.

  • TCS writes a new chapter with 25 years of Literacy as a Service

TCS writes a new chapter with 25 years of Literacy as a Service

MUMBAI: Words can change worlds and for Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), the past 25 years have been proof enough. On World Literacy Day, the IT giant marked a milestone: a quarter-century of its flagship Literacy as a Service (LaaS) initiative, which began life in 2000 under the vision of Dr F C Kohli as a modest adult literacy programme and has since grown into a global movement of empowerment.

The numbers tell a compelling story. Over the years, 2.85 million learners across 21 Indian states, union territories, and parts of Africa have been equipped with functional, financial and digital literacy. In FY25 alone, LaaS reached more than 412,000 learners, powered by a vast network of 241,000 plus facilitators. The ripple effect extends far beyond classrooms: from helping rural women run small businesses to ensuring families understand their rights and claim welfare entitlements.

In Andhra Pradesh, for example, TCS has partnered with the government to empower 400,000 women across 26 districts, blending financial know-how with digital skills. The platform itself has kept pace with the times available in nine Indian and three foreign languages, it uses graphics, sound patterns, vernacular content, and even AI-powered personalisation to ensure inclusivity for first-generation learners and under-served groups.

Beyond the basics of reading and writing, the curriculum now stretches into life-relevant areas: financial literacy, digital adoption, awareness of citizen entitlements, and even disaster preparedness. The impact is visible in small but powerful ways from managing household finances to bridging the digital divide and building resilience in crises.

The initiative has also been amplified by the “Each One Empowers One” campaign, where TCS and Tata Group associates mentor individuals within their communities, creating a multiplier effect. Social inclusion, economic participation, and self-confidence have all been central outcomes of this effort making literacy not just a skill, but a springboard for dignity and opportunity.

TCS Joseph global head of CSR Sunil Nallapalli called it a movement rather than a programme: literacy as the seed of generational change. And after 25 years, those seeds have taken root in millions of lives, creating not just readers, but leaders.

  • Varun T Wanvari circles back to Himalaya Wellness

Varun T Wanvari circles back to Himalaya Wellness

MUMBAI: Varun T Wanvari has pulled off corporate India’s latest U-turn, returning to Himalaya Wellness Company in May after an 18-month sojourn through Amazon’s retail machinery.

“Some journeys come a full circle,” the category manager declared on LinkedIn, clearly pleased with his homecoming. He’s not wrong—Wanvari previously managed lotions and creams at The Himalaya Drug Company from 2016 to 2018.

His career reads like FMCG bingo: systems engineer at Tata Consultancy Services, marketing intern for Hot Wheels at Mattel, brand duties at Reliance’s Hamleys, and five years flogging Good Day biscuits and Toastea at Britannia Industries. Amazon beckoned in late 2023 as senior category manager, but the wellness world’s siren call proved stronger.

“Grateful for the continued trust,” Wanvari said, deploying enough LinkedIn enthusiasm to power a small ashram. His hashtag-heavy post (#NewBeginnings #WellnessWithPur) suggests genuine excitement about returning to products you can actually smell.

Whether he’ll apply Amazon’s data wizardry to ancient ayurvedic wisdom remains to be seen. This boomerang has landed exactly where it started—with considerably more corporate spin.

  • Danish retail giant Coop extends SAP S/4HANA ERP tech contract with TCS

Danish retail giant Coop extends SAP S/4HANA ERP tech contract with TCS

MUMBAI: Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has bagged a juicy contract extension with Coop Danmark, continuing to power the digital backbone of Denmark’s retail heavyweight across its 900-plus stores.
The Indian IT behemoth will keep its hands on the technological tiller of Coop’s SAP S/4HANA enterprise resource planning system, a partnership that’s already been cooking for five years. In today’s retail pressure cooker, with penny-pinching shoppers scrutinising every price tag, this digital alliance aims to streamline operations and spruce up customer experiences.

“We are building the Coop of the future,” declared Coop Danmark CTO Lars Ole. “Our digital transformation must continue if we’re to create a shopping experience that keeps our two million members coming back for more.”

The collaboration, one of the Nordic region’s most substantial tech implementations, has already standardised business processes throughout Coop’s retail operations. Now the partnership is set to beef up with artificial intelligence and machine learning capabilities while trimming the fat from operating costs.

TCS retail business head Abhijit Niyogi said: “We are proud to extend our partnership with Coop Danmark and support the critical core function of their retail business.”

For TCS, this deal is another feather in its Nordic cap, where it currently deploys over 20,000 staff supporting regional heavyweights. The company has clearly not been resting on its laurels, having scooped the #1 spot in customer satisfaction and nabbed a Top Employer award from the Top Employers Institute.

As supermarket wars intensify across Europe, this technological union seems determined to keep Coop Danmark fighting fit in the battle for increasingly fickle shoppers’ loyalty.

  • TCS welcomes finance veteran Sanjay Bhandarkar as independent director

TCS welcomes finance veteran Sanjay Bhandarkar as independent director

MUMBAI: Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has made a bullish move, roping in finance industry veteran Sanjay V. Bhandarkar as an additional director and independent non-executive director for a five-year term, effective from 4 March 2025, until 3 March 2030. The appointment, recommended by the nomination and remuneration committee, awaits shareholder approval.

When it comes to finance, investment banking, and corporate strategy, Bhandarkar is no newbie. He’s the man who played a pivotal role in shaping India’s financial advisory landscape. Having held leadership positions at Rothschild India and ICICI, he boasts an impressive track record in M&A, restructuring, and equity capital markets. If there’s a corporate puzzle to solve, chances are, Bhandarkar has already cracked a tougher one.

Bhandarkar’s expertise isn’t just limited to boardrooms. He has advised the Government of India on landmark projects, including the first-ever e-auctions for 3G and BWA spectrum, and played a critical role in restructuring the infamous Enron and GE-backed Dabhol power project. Simply put, he knows how to navigate the high-stakes financial chessboard.

Currently, Bhandarkar serves on the boards of Tata Power, HDFC Asset Management, Chemplast Sanmar, and Tata Projects. He also holds key roles in investment committees and advisory boards, lending his strategic mind to South Asia Growth Fund II and III and 1crowd, a seed capital stage investing platform.

With TCS being a global tech giant, what does an investment banking whiz bring to the table? Strategic foresight, financial acumen, and the ability to navigate complex business environments. The appointment of a seasoned finance professional is no coincidence. It’s a calculated move to ensure the company’s growth trajectory stays as ambitious as ever. Bhandarkar’s addition to the TCS board signals a sharper focus on financial strategy and governance.
