Dish TV crosses one lakh downloads of DishOnline

MUMBAI: The newly launched DishOnline application by Dish TV crossed one lakh downloads in less than 30 days of its launch.

The DTH operator was quick on its feet to understand the trend of consumers preferring to watch TV anywhere anytime. This prompted Dish TV to launch its DishOnline application that is a first-of-its-kind online video streaming service that allows customers to watch TV across devices like smartphones, tablets, laptops, etc.

Dish TV India COO Salil Kapoor said: “This trend in the Indian market is in line with the global market where device shift for TV content consumption is clearly visible (from one TV to multi-screen TV/ tablets/ smartphones/ laptops). As a pioneer and market leader, it was imperative that we demonstrate thought-leadership and launch this new service for the benefit of our subscribers. We are thankful to our subscribers for this encouraging initial response. New products such as this have a tremendous potential to grow and we look forward to capturing an even wider subscriber base in the times to come.”

It is a unique service from Dish TV that allows subscribers to watch live and catch up TV including videos and movies. DishOnline has a huge library of movies (1000 plus titles) which can be enjoyed anywhere anytime on the go.

It is a paid service priced at Rs 129 for the Jumbo pack and at Rs 69 for the Starter pack (currently being offered at Rs 69 and Rs 29 as an introductory offer). The initial success of this product proved that the consumption of content by consumers is evolving and they are ready to pay extra for convenience that includes both time and screen.

Dish TV launched this innovative path-breaking service – DishOnline – in early October that proposed to redefine TV viewing in India. This service is being provided to the family of 15 million plus subscribers of Dish TV. It is a full-fledged OTT (over the top) streaming application.

Thinkbox: Portable devices account for 1.5% of TV viewing

MUMBAI: New TV viewing figures from Thinkbox reveal that 98.5 per cent of television viewing is still done on the traditional TV set in the UK, while 1.5 per cent is on other screens such as tablets and mobile devices.

The average daily TV viewing in the UK (during January to June 2013) was four hours, one minute a day per person. This was comprised of three hours, 58 minutes a day of linear TV on a TV set – this is three minutes a day less than the same period last year – and three minutes, 30 seconds a day via devices such as tablets, smartphones and laptops. The majority of this is on-demand viewing, with some live streams.

Viewing on non-TV devices via established services such as ITV Player, Sky Go, 4OD and BBC iPlayer, as well as new services like Dave on-demand, accounted for 1.5 per cent of overall TV viewing in the country during the first half of 2013. This is a slight increase from the full-year figure for 2012, when it accounted for 1.2 per cent.

According to Broadcasters’ Audience Research Board (BARB), it’s estimated that 58 per cent of households own digital TV recorders, and in these homes 83.8 per cent of linear TV was watched live during the period, down from the 84.4 per cent in the same period a year ago. Also, 81 per cent of all time shifted viewing is watched within two days of recording, while 47 per cent is seen within 24 hours of it being recorded. BARB’s figures suggest that the growth in the number of TVs that is recorded and played back is slowing down.

  • Evaluation of RFPs for BARC to be held from 14 August

Evaluation of RFPs for BARC to be held from 14 August

NEW DELHI: The Evaluation Panel of the Technical Committee of the Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) will meet from 14 to 17 August in the hill station of Lonavla (close to Mumbai) to evaluate the responses to the Requests for Proposal (RFPs) received from 27 organisations. BARC had earlier received a total of 32 requests from different technology and research organisations for joining the process of television viewership monitoring. The committee has accepted 27 of these. Two of them – one technical and the other research – will make it to the finishing line.

“Some parties may have responded to both RFPs. Some may have sent in only the technical or research RFP,” says BARC principal provocateur/advisor Paritosh Joshi.

Joshi, who represents the broadcasters’ interests in the 12-member technical committee in BARC adds that “The entire evaluation process would be completed by November and the names of the two parties would be made public by December.”

BARC hopes to commence sending out television viewing audience research reports by the summer of next year. “We expect that in the first phase, the number of households will go up from the present 10,000 to 20,000, ensuring a proper balance of rural and urban areas,” he adds.

The present intention of the committee is to develop studies every six months. “But this can vary with time,” he informs.

BARC as part of its endeavour to share the latest updates with all constituents hosted its open house today in New Delhi. This was the second of the series of interactions that BARC plans to hold. Approximately 70 people representing the broadcasters, advertisers and agencies attended the meet.

Addressing the meet, Joshi stressed that BARC would not be a research body but a development organisation, He also updated the participants on the work done so far, the work planned, and a wish list of things that BARC hopes to achieve in the future.

BARC has claimed that this was one of the largest tender ever floated for audience measurement anywhere in the world. The tender terms state that each vendor has to work with whomsoever BARC wants it to work with. This is to ensure system integration, keeping in mind the involvement of multiple vendors.

“We are attempting to move from active metering where individuals are given people’s meters to passive metering where technologies like apps or even cameras inbuilt in TV sets and other devices will be used. Technology will now play a major part since television viewing is no longer confined to TV sets but to tablets, computers, fablets, mobiles and so on,” informs Joshi.

BARC has made it clear in its RFPs’ that it wanted a screen and technology agnostic measurement. “BARC wants to minimise human intervention in processing data,” reveals Joshi.

While the attempt is to report audience research on a weekly basis, BARC has recognised that there are some channels that could not be reported on a weekly basis, and so these channels can be reported quarterly. “BARC will give unduplicated quarterly reach since there is no other number available for these channels,” he informs.

Currently an establishment study is underway which covers 2.4 lakh households. For this, BARC has used the census of India and electoral rolls, since there was no other database available.

Clarifying the role of the technical committee, Joshi said, “Besides evaluation of the proposals for the new audience measurement system, the BARC technical committee will carry out due-diligence exercises on a regular basis once data starts flowing. Since audience measurement research is not stationary, it is evolving continuously; the technical committee will drive the evolution.”

The technical committee is autonomous of the BARC board. “The technical committee decides what the research needs. For the board to override a decision that the technical committee has made requires it to have a 75 per cent majority,” he says.

Referring to his wish list, Joshi hopes that the studies are cloud-based with broadcast data available on apps.

  • Mobile-based TV channel launched by young grads

Mobile-based TV channel launched by young grads

MUMBAI: A group of graduates from Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala have launched a TV channel called ‘We 4 U’, the first 2G/3G mobile TV channel. The channel can be accessed anywhere in the world.

The channel is going in its test phase soon and will focus on local news and events such as programmes of residence associations and the youth. It will run for 24 hours and will be supported on all platforms such as Java and Android.

Tie ups are being planned with other TV networks for expansion. For now the channel will be available at normal rates.

  • UTV Stars and bindass big on digital

UTV Stars and bindass big on digital

MUMBAI: If one could say that digital and youngsters go hand-in-hand, then it won’t be wrong considering the amount of time youngsters spend online.

A look around would be proof enough – almost everyone is busy with their mobiles, tablets or laptops. Therefore, for a youth channel to have an online presence is as important as breathing!

Disney-UTVnetwork which has two channels – bindass and UTV Stars – under its banner caters largely to youngsters. And the channels are making/taking full efforts to take these brands where the youth are.

“A strong online presence across YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and web destinations is a significant step in that direction… Our strategy is to provide our web users with constant updates on our programming and also create a platform for the youth to get together and enjoy content on Bollywood and youth oriented themes,” says Disney UTV’s COO – Digital Sameer Ganapathy.

    The number game

Both channels – binadss and UTVStars – have a strong presence on Facebook, YouTube and Twitter wherein they try to give their audience something different from the rest. For example, when the IPL was on, unlike others who just give the score or the wickets which were available on all portals the channel gave its target audience behind-the-scenes insights on cricketer’s wives and how they were egging on and cheeringfor their spouses as they battled for India on the cricket pitch.

Disney UTVs COO – Digital Sameer

    Ganapathy feels constant updates

on the digital platforms will create

    traction among the youth

Apart from that, the network gives importance to humorous content in its posts across genres such as technology, automobiles, Bollywood, travel, sports etc.

On Facebook, bindass has over three million fans which lets them boast of being the most engaged youth entertainment (channels) on the social networking site in the country. As for, other networking sites, on twitter it has more than 6,600 followers and on YouTube (for which bindass creates original content) it has more than 64 million views with close to 90,000 subscribers.

UTVStars which was launched around two years ago (Aug 2011) has 900,000 fans on Facebook, 20,000+ followers on twitter and 88 million views on YouTube with 96,000 subscribers who have access to all the shows and behind the scene videos.

The channel’s digital team knows that all three platforms differ, but each is important in its own way as the objective it serves varies. Facebook and Twitter let them interact and engage with their fans. YouTube channels serve two purposes – the first as a destination for viewers to catch up on TV shows that might have been missed out on TV, and the second as to lure new audiences on the back of original content.

    Connecting with content

UTV group CEO and founder chairman Ronnie Screwvala is normally known to quip: “I’m original, so I want original.” And the entire group has made that it’s mandate: hence, the initiative to create fresh original content online too. “80 per cent of the audience on YouTube is male.

Hence, we created a new destination for young men looking for the edge in the mating game – AXE Chickipedia, an entertaining webisodic original content series around a young guy and the funny situations he faces in the mating game! We took engagement and participation to a whole new level by giving viewers a chance to share their own mating game experiences, and the funniest ones became a Chickipedia episode. Eventually, 40 per cent of our 26 episodes were made from stories shared by our viewers themselves.” brags Sameer.

Chickipedia has 2.1 million video views, with 60 per cent audience retention.

Chickipedia’s success encouraged the team to come up with a new show MENtals. Launched earlier this year, it focuses on situations reqular girls in romantic relationships face – albeit with a humorous undertone.

Music is one of the main categories which the channels focuses on.

“Music is an important aspect of the lives of youth and particularly at bindass we have always maintained a compelling and healthy mix of shows and music. Following that philosophy, another unique proposition that we recently launched is bindass Jukebox”, says Sameer.

The application combines the experience of Facebook with that of television viewing making it interactive. Through bindass Jukebox users are able to rank music by voting for their favorite songs listed and interact with other users as well.

It gives users a chance to select their favourite song, dedicate the song to their friends and loved ones and most importantly watch their dedication message along with their profile image live on the channel. The playlist is created on the basis of users’ Facebook votes and is then played out on television within three hours from the time voting starts. This works well as it provides almost instant gratification to young folks, as it allows them to get peer recognition, especially when their profiles are seen on TV.

Similarly, UTV Stars has Tia’s Request show. Users vote for their fav songs on the UTV stars Facebook page and this gets aired on the TV channel along with their dedications.

    Money matters

When asked to explain the sources of revenue on the online platform, Sameer says, “With YouTube, monetisation occurs through run of network inventory that YouTube runs, sponsorships through show integrations as well as now with subscriptions. We are exploring subscriptions for our premium content while building audiences and viewership through ad-support both via run of network inventory monetisation as well as sponsorship integration.”

As for Facebook and Twitter, they are yet to come up with a native monetisation model for publishers. “However, through using our engaged audience base on these platforms, we are creating transmedia properties like bindass Jukebox on Facebook as well as platforms such as sponsored tweets to monetise audiences there. We plan to increase such media properties that can be monetised,” he adds.

One thing is clear that since youth entertainment is a dynamic genre and hence, it is important to go beyond TV and create a strong presence where young people tend to spend their time whether it is Facebook, Twitter or YouTube. And gauging from their ongoing initiatives, Bindass and UTV Stars, seem to be taking the right steps.
