  • ‘A Silent Frown’ book commemorates Charlie Chaplin’s life on his 133rd birth anniversary

‘A Silent Frown’ book commemorates Charlie Chaplin’s life on his 133rd birth anniversary

Mumbai: DDB Mudra Group and Charlie Chaplin Museum Foundation have created a book titled ‘A Silent Frown’ dedicated to the life and philosophy of Charlie Chaplin. The book will be officially launched on the 133rd birth anniversary of the legendary entertainer at Chaplin’s World Museum in Switzerland on 16 April.

The ‘A Silent Frown’ book has been developed as a piece of art. Each page depicts Chaplin’s life in illustrations on a transparent section. When stacked by closing the book, the illustrations come together to form the visage of the great entertainer.

Eugene Chaplin, recording engineer, filmmaker, and son of Charlie Chaplin, will present the book to the audience and formally launch a signed copy.

“It is Chaplin’s touching life story presented in few words, with creativity and emotion, a beautiful echo of the art of the comic master of silent cinema,” said Charlie Chaplin Museum Foundation member of the board and head office director Annick Barbezat-Perrin.

Copies of the book signed by members of the Chaplin family will also be available for auction online later this year.

Eugene Chaplin, son of Charlie Chaplin and Oona O’Neill said, “This book is a perfect mix of beauty, fun and surprise. A real work of art paying a superb tribute to the life of my father.”

“Charlie Chaplin’s life serves as inspiration when we need it the most. The last two years have been marred by illness, war, and failing economies; it has created an atmosphere of melancholy,” stated DDB Mudra Group CCO Rahul Mathews. “He too faced similar challenges but smiled through it all. More importantly, he took the world along for the ride. The book we have created does not just depict his life; it captures the hope he shared with millions through his work.”

The book will be available to the public at the museum. “All proceeds from the sale of ‘A Silent Frown’ at the museum will go towards the charitable and humanitarian initiatives led by the Charlie Chaplin Museum Foundation. These include implementing and developing cultural activities around Chaplin’s art at Chaplin’s World, such as workshops and film screenings,” said the statement.

  • Can Ranveer Singh breathe life into the Swiss tourism industry?

Can Ranveer Singh breathe life into the Swiss tourism industry?

MUMBAI: Everyone loves a little vacation once a year. They say, Travel makes one modest, you see what a tiny place you occupy in the world. The tourism industry today is booming with the number of people travelling to foreign destinations witnessing a three-fold rise.

Travel and tourism is one of the world’s fastest-growing sectors today, with close to $1.6 trillion clocked in bookings in 2017. A strengthening global economy lies at the heart of industry growth. Each year, the global traveler pool is flooded with millions of new consumers from both emerging and developed markets, many with rising disposable incomes and a newfound ability to experience the world.

According to 2017 report by TripAdvisor, for globetrotting Indians preferred traveling to Dubai, Singapore, Bangkok and Pattaya, while the evolved and well-heeled Indians sought relatively unexplored destinations such as Genoa in Italy, Corsica in France, Bora Bora and Iceland.

As many as 2.8 crore Indians travel to international destinations every year. Places like Dubai, Switzerland, Maldives, Maccau, Bali, Singapore, Thailand among few others, have always been popular among Indians.

At a time when the travel industry is booming with tourists pouring in from all parts of the world, Switzerland, a destination once every Indian wanted to travel to (thanks to Yash Raj and Bollywood movies), now seems to have lost its appeal. The situation was dire that the revenue from tourism remained stagnant at 15.7 billion CHF between 2013-15. To increase the footfall of Indian travelers, Switzerland appointed Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh as its brand ambassador with a hope to attract Indians and Bollywood fans from across the globe.

Earlier this month, Switzerland tourism launched its second campaign with Ranveer. The tourism board this time, wants to promote Switzerland as a destination for everyone, especially those who are single. Switzerland Tourism India Director Claudio Zemp said, “We wanted to promote Switzerland as a year long destination rather than the preconceived image that everyone has about the place that its only a romantic destination. Hence, we decided to target the younger generation in the campaign to come and explore the place for its adventures.”

According to Zemp, ever since they’ve signed Ranveer as the brand ambassador, Switzerland tourism has seen an increase of 23.4 per cent Indians staying over night.

Overall, the tourism industry has grown by 119 per cent in the last 10 years with an average of 8 per cent per year.

The second campaign with Ranveer was also not created by any ad agency and was instead executed in-house by the tourism board along with the actor’s team.

Although the campaign was launched in the first half of June, most of the schools and colleges start by this time of the year in India. Therefore, it would have made much more sense for the tourism board to launch the campaign between November-February, as that is when most Indians decide on their summer travel plans. Since the final product of the campaign became ready quite late, Zemp said that they are targeting the next peak season with this campaign.

Travel ads are usually targeted at those with enough funds to spare for travel. Hence, it makes more sense for them to advertise on lifestyle and infotainment channels along with B2B marketing. And that’s exactly what most tourism companies imply. However, Zemp mentioned that they had no plan of launching the campaign on television due to budget constraints and it will only be digital led.

“We don’t have enough budget to do television advertising as we are not the Coca-Colas of the world. Our advertising budget on mainstream media In India is limited.”

For Switzerland, 5 per cent of its visitors come from India, 71 per cent of whom travel between April-August. To promote the tourism, Switzerland has various offers on its rail passes and other tickets. For this, Zemp mentioned that 45 per cent their annual budget goes into digital marketing as it is cheap, efficient and quick.

Ever since the brand signed Singh, in 2017, the total of overnights spent in Switzerland grew by +5.2% to 37’392’740. The source market India, along with South Korea, South East Asia, Brazil, and Taiwan, reported record results highlighting the big allure of Switzerland in Asia.

Though Switzerland tourism is now spending big bucks to promote its agenda, the country continues to face stiff competition from other emerging travel destinations that have become a favorite with the Indian travelers of late. The challenge for Switzerland now is not just to market itself better than others but also regenerate interest among Indians.

  • IOC proposes Olympic OTT channel, plans to firm up by Dec

IOC proposes Olympic OTT channel, plans to firm up by Dec

NEW DELHI: An Olympic television channel is to commence telecast from next year as an OTT service.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has said it will present Olympic sports 24 hours per day to make the Olympic Games more attractive for young people.

According to IOC president Thomas Bach, the channel will show a mixture of live sports, stories about athletes and volunteers, news and background information.

During the Olympic Games in London in 2012, the IOC had reached out to young people via mobile apps. Following the launch of the global channel in English, collaborations with domestic TV channels in the local language should be possible, Bach said.

Bach told German media that the Olympic Channel is being set up in Madrid with around 120 employees and will show a mixture of live sports, back stories of athletes and volunteers, and background information.

A meeting of the IOC’s Executive Board in Montreux, Switzerland, recommended that an all-year Olympics TV Channel be set up.

The IOC has recommended that the proposal be put before the full IOC membership, which is meeting on 8 and 9 December in Monaco for approval.

An IOC statement said it would be contacting “all the relevant stakeholders” over the next few months to gather their opinions and further develop the concept prior to making a decision in December.

The aim of the plan is to appeal to some of the four billion viewers who watch the Olympics when the event takes place, and to help focus viewers on the less popular sports, which tend not to get coverage in between the main Olympics coverage.

One report from the meeting recently of Olympic Games leaders and supporters in Switzerland was that the IOC would act as the moderator or facilitator of the channel, but its national sports federations, national committees as well as broadcasters and sponsors would participate.

  • Single window service for film shooting to become operational shortly: Tewari

NEW DELHI: A single window service for promoting cinema tourism is all set to become operational shortly.

Speaking at the Cinemascape 2013 conclave in Mumbai today, Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari observed that India with its rich heritage and diverse geography has great potential as a destination for film shooting but the current system of multiple clearances at various levels made it an unattractive destination for filming.

“Increasingly therefore, most Indian filmmakers have gravitated towards foreign destinations for outdoor shoots. Any lost opportunity is a revenue loss for the country,” he remarked.

India has a great potential to become a destination for film shooting but the current system of multiple clearances at various levels make it an unattractive destination for filming, says Manish Tewari

Tewari said the government has now decided to address the issue by establishing a single window service for granting clearances for film shootings in India. He informed that a Committee on Promotion and Facilitation of Film Production in India has been set up. It is chaired by the secretary in the ministry, with senior representatives from the Ministries of External Affairs, Home Affairs; Tourism; Culture; Railways; Civil Aviation; Defence and Department of Revenue etc.

The state governments have been asked to nominate the nodal officers for film clearance. The minister said Standard Operating Procedures are being developed to accord clearances for film shooting by domestic and foreign producers in India.

Tewari stressed on the need for a sound legal architecture for promoting cinema as a form of creative expression. While conceding that law and order is a state subject, he said film certification falls in the central domain. He said, “There is an urgent need to update laws relating to film certification and exhibition and I am happy to inform that the committee headed by Justice Mukul Mudgal has submitted its recommendation along with a model bill to replace the existing Cinematograph Act 1952.”

He said the recommendations of the committee as well as the model bill will be published on the website of the ministry to seek wider public consultation. The minister assured the film fraternity that by the middle of 2014, India would have a contemporary law to deal with cinema.

Dwelling on the issue of taxation and fiscal incentives for the film and entertainment sector, the minister called upon the industry representatives to set up a committee of experts to draw a comprehensive strategy, which could then be submitted to the Finance Minister on behalf of his ministry.

Participating in a panel discussion, noted film maker Mukesh Bhatt said 76 different permissions have to be obtained for film shooting in India, while Indian producers are given a red carpet welcome in some of the cine-tourism nations like Switzerland, New Zealand, South Africa, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore. Bhatt acknowledged that the Ministry’s effort is a welcome first step.
