    MUMBAI: For those who know Swati Shetty, they will always commend her for her never-say-die spirit. The Los Angeles-based former Netflix director international originals & acquisitions and  producer of Umrika has got together with former CAA agent Grant Kessman to set up a production outfit Birdge7.

    And amongst the first transactions it has done is acquiring the film sequel and television series rights of the Oscar winning, Danny Boyle-directed Celador produced Slumdog Millionaire.

    This is what the duo had to say after striking the deal with Celador: “Some stories stay with us long after the credits roll and ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ is undoubtedly one of them. Its narrative is universal, cutting across cultural and geograpahical lines and it embodies the kind of stories we love — ones that bridge entertainment with profound human experiences. What makes ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ extraordinary is not only its cinematic brilliance — spanning storytelling, music and its remarkable accolades, but also how it brought together talent from across the world to make a global winning team.”

    Celador International chairman Paul Smith expressed his confidence in the duo acquiring the rights and said the studio was looking forward to working with Bridge7.

    MUMBAI: Netflix international originals and acquisitions director for India Swati Shetty has put down her papers after a successful stint of more than two years with the company. Netflix confirmed the development to Indiantelevision.com via email.

    Shetty, the lady responsible for Indian content licensing, was based in the US. According to a source, given the increasing importance of India in Netflix’s international business, the company now wants the India content and film acquisition role to be based out of Mumbai. Shetty, however, did not want to relocate. This is her last week in the company, the source further added.

    Netflix had opened its India office in Mumbai last year and is now beefing up its team across various verticals like content licensing, production talent and marketing among others.

    Over the next few years, the streaming giant intends to benefit from India’s growing video-streaming appetite, targeting the acquisition of 100 million subscribers.

    Apart from sprucing up its offering with more locally produced original content, the company is also set to experiment with pricing models.

    Last year, the Reed Hastings-led company hired Simran Sethi to serve as creative executive for India and be part of its International Originals Production Group.

    Earlier this year, Shrishti Behl Arya was appointed by Netflix as director for international orginals, India.

    Shetty, who was among the first executives for India, helped Netflix to increase its Indian content library and acquire original films with hits like Love Per Square Feet, Lust Stories and Rajma Chawal. 

    Her experience spans two decades. She also worked with Star India, Walt Disney and Balaji Telefilms.

    MUMBAI: Following in the footsteps of Vir Das, Hasan Minhaj and Aziz Ansari, comedianne Aditi Mittal is preparing to do a special stand-up show for Netflix: “Things They Wouldn’t Let Me Say.” The show will debut on the video-streaming platform giant on 18 July to its over 100 million global members across 190 countries, PTI reported.

    Mittal, one of the first women in India to do stand-up comedy, touches up issues such as sex, gender, and notions about beauty in her shows. Her Netflix show is gender revolution rich with taboos of being a woman in India today.

    Netflix director of content acquisition Swati Shetty said that Aditi’s success reflected the growing pool of Indian stand-up comedy talent that was already gaining international recognition. Netflix was proud to showcase Aditi’s bold wit and humour on the Netflix service, she added.

    Having a platform such as Netflix was a dream come true for anyone in entertainment and comedy today.. The journey of the show had been absolutely exhilarating, Mittal said. She hoped that Netflix fans across the globe would enjoy the show as much as she had had while making it.

    MUMBAI: Video streaming OTT Netflix is slowly and steadily building up its management in Asia and in India. The latest recruit in the firm is Dipashree Das who has hopped on board as partner marketing for south-east Asia and India.

    Das is a senior digital and content marketing professional with more than 11 years of experience across TV, digital and brand marketing.

    She began her career with Hindustan Lever and worked there for five years before being posted as regional brand manager personal and wash. Following that she worked at NDTV Profit as the head of ad-funded programming and correspondent.

    She then moved on to Channel News Asia and went on to lead the 360 digital strategy and content team. She was with Singtel for the last three years working on marketing, advertising, trade marketing, regional partnerships and sales strategy.

    In August, Netflix announced the appointment of two professionals – Swati Shetty — who has got the designation of Director, International Originals & Acquisitions – and Gaurav Pradhan, who joined the company as director of business development.

    The streaming service launched in India with premium pricing and has managed to attract less than a guesstimated 50,000 subscribers in India.

    MUMBAI: In a move to strengthen its team, global video-on-demand player Netflix has hired two senior talents from India. Former YouTube Indian and Southeast Asia product partnerships head Gaurav Pradhan has joined Netflix as director business development Asia, effective from July 2016.

    Meanwhile, Netflix LA has also appointed former Balaji Telefilms’s motion pictures president and Samosa Stories Entertainment founder director Swati Shetty.

    Pradhan has more than 16 years of experience in business development and has served at Google in business development International product partnerships functions for a year. He has also been a part of Yahoo as the chief manager for telco operations and was the assistant manager for value added services in Hutchison Essar (now Vodafone).

    Shetty, on the other hand, was the founder and director of Samosa Stories Entertainment, where she produced Umrika, a film written and directed by Prashant Nair and starring Suraj Sharma (Life of Pi) and Tony Revolori ( The Grand Budapest Hotel ).

    The film was selected in the world cinema dramatic competition at the Sundance film festival 2015 and won the Audience Award. Umrika is represented by Beta Cinema internationally, and ICM Partners in North America.

    Prior to that, Shetty had worked with Star India for five years as manager; and with Walt Disney International productions India as an executive director.

    In April 2016, Netflix roped in Anthony Zameczkowski as vice president, business development for Asia-Pacific. Zameczkowski came with over 17 years of experience in the media and technology industry. At Netflix, his mandate will include leading and managing strategic partnerships and business development in the region.
