Suvarna News rebrands as Asianet Suvarna News

NEW DELHI: Leading Karnataka news channel Suvarna News has rebranded itself as Asianet Suvarna News.

With its tagline ‘Straight, Bold and Relentless’, the rebranded channel, with a slew of new programs, aims to build further gains in the fiercely fought leadership race in the Kannada news broadcasting industry.

Asianet News Media & Entertainment Pvt Ltd CEO Abhinav Khare said, “Suvarna News has rapidly emerged as a strong player in the region and established its leadership in the news broadcasting space. The brand has been pivotal in the state, empowering the citizens through insightful and impactful reporting. With the addition of Asianet News in its identity, Asianet Suvarna News will derive better recall, leverage Asianet News Network’s national advantage, and more importantly, it will establish stronger credibility that is unmatched in the region.”

Asianet Suvarna News editor-in-chief Ravi Hegde said, “The new identity has triggered an exciting, revamped look and feel along with introduction of new shows during the prime time which will be a game changer in the Karnataka News genre. This is not a one-day rebrand excitement for us. We will pay the same attention to detail serious journalism requires. In a copy-cat news media market we will differentiate ourselves with credible, verified visual presentation true to our tagline Straight-Bold-Relentless.”

Asianet News Media and Entertainment Pvt Ltd executive chairman Rajesh Kalra pointed at the lack of programming differentiators across the news broadcasting business and said, “We are witnessing a shift in consumer behaviour over the recent past. It is important for news broadcasters to be sensitive to this shift. With shrinking attention span and ever evolving viewership behaviour, presenting well differentiated verified content will be the key to better engagement. Asianet Suvarna News is doing exactly that and will continue to deliver on the back of its well-researched content strategy."

Savdhaan India launches it’s new season of Savdhaan India

MUMBAI: Life OK’s flagship series Savdhaan India has received tremendous love and respect from the viewers in the last 4 years. In this journey, it has not only alerted citizens against crime and but has also given them the strength and motivation to face crime. In addition to showcasing real life incidents, the show has also advanced to acknowledging brave hearts who chose to fight against crime through Samman Awards.

Savdhaan India is all set to start its new season with a hard-hitting avatar. The new season’s philosophy – ‘darrkarnahi, dattkar’ urges the citizens to break their prevailing attitude of letting things be, of letting the powerful get away with crime, of not speaking up out of fear and face crime head on. As a brand that has always believed in walking the talk, Savdhaan India took the campaign on ground across the country and interacted with the citizens of Delhi, Lucknow and Ahmedabad

The campaign began at the capital city Delhi where the ‘darrkarnahi, dattkar’ anthem along with the pledge movement was unveiled for the very first time. In the next leg of the campaign, the anchors visited notorious crime locations and interacted with the citizens there. SarkhejGandhinagar Highway in Ahmedabad and PatrakarpuramChauraha in Lucknow were visited as hit and run cases and eve-teasing incidents are very prevalent in these locations respectively.

Savdhaan India has always acknowledged the youth to be change agents. Hence, following the visit to the crime locations, the team of Savdhaan India visited schools and colleges. The hosts invited the students to become partners in this attitudinal revolution. The students using a palm scanner digitally pledged their support. The hosts discussed youth related issues like eve teasing, ragging, bullying and cybercrime. At HK College in Ahmedabad many students shared harrowing experiences of being bullied and eve-teased and how they fought it. While in CMS, Gomtinagar – the students and the hosts had a very relevant discussion on how to protect oneself on social media.

A picture lasts forever and with that thought – the team of Savdhaan India created a huge pledge wall in these 3 cities. All those who were a part of this initiative clicked a picture of themselves against the wall to remind themselves of the pledge they took. More than 1000 pictures were collected. Lastly, the hosts felicitated the bravehearts who narrated their own stories of facing crime fearlessly thereby taking the of initiative ‘darrkarnahi, dattkar’ to life.

  • Suvarna sets high hopes with Bigg Boss Kannada 2

Suvarna sets high hopes with Bigg Boss Kannada 2

BENGALURU: A few weeks ago, Indiantelevision.com had reported that Star Network’s Kannada general entertainment channel (GEC) Suvarna has bagged the rights of the second season of Bigg Boss Kannada (BBK) from ETV Kannada.

And the channel is all set to start airing the 100 episode daily show starting 29 June hosted by Kannada actor Sudeep again.

To keep the mystery alive, Suvarna claims that the names of the 14 contestants have been kept under wraps with the winner taking home a cash prize of Rs 50 lakh. Suvarna business head Anup Chandrasekharan says, “We have always brought in different and exciting content for our audience and we are delighted to bring to your screens yet another thrilling series. Bigg Boss Kannada promises to be an electrifying season in its second innings.”

A key differentiator between the Kannada and Hindi editions is the set at Lonavala which is simpler and has fewer cameras (35 maximum).

Produced by Endemol India, BBK 2 is an hour long episode to be aired between 8 to 9 pm will see a three hour long premiere, inform sources at the channel.

Endemol India COO Abhishek Rege adds, “Bigg Boss has captured the attention of Indian audiences all over! With a legacy of record breaking TRPs it has truly gained momentum on both national and regional television with the continuing success Bigg Boss Hindi and fantastic response received by Bigg Boss Kannada season 1.”

The channel has roped in OLX.in as the title sponsor, CERA as the powered by sponsor, Dollar Bigg Boss as associate sponsor and many more are lined up. The channel says that it is selling ad spots at a 200 per cent premium. Chandrasekharan says that he is looking at a 70-30 (spot-buying) split, with 70 per cent advertisers and sponsors already booked.

A 360 degree marketing plan has been designed for BBK 2, for which it has earmarked around Rs 8 crore. This includes 150 hoardings across Karnataka and on 50 bus shelters in Bengaluru, 100 branded buses and ad spots on three radio stations. It has also planned for print ads in all publications on the launch day as well as magazine. Other outdoor and BTL activities include multiplex activity at PVR and Inox, mall branding in Bengaluru, door to door activity and mobile van activity.

The channel is promoting the programme heavily on the digital platform through its website and social networking sites. It also intends to have a sub domain for BBK. The channel will dedicate 70 per cent of its promo time on this show during the launch phase, as well as run spots on its sister channel, Suvarna Plus.

Industry sources peg the production cost of the show at about Rs 16 crore to Rs 17 crore across the 100 episodes, with the total cost pegged at around Rs 30 crore to Rs 35 crore. “There is no such thing as inflation. This season will cost about the same as last season to produce the show,” reveals the source. About 800 technicians would be working in shifts behind the scenes.

While Chandrasekharan claims non disclosure agreement (NDA) reasons for not disclosing the amount that the channel is paying for retaining host Sudeep, industry sources put the amount at between Rs 1.5 crore to Rs 2.5 crore.

“Sudeep was the obvious choice for season 2 as well. If we had brought in someone else, it would be like re-inventing the wheel. So what if the show has switched channels?” says a source at Endemol India.

Though the show did bring in ratings numbers for ETV Kannada during in season one, it did not rake in the money that was expected reveals an industry source. “This was probably the reason that the Star Network could take the show away from Viacom18,” explains the source.

  • Suvarna to present first Kannada mythological daily Shivaleelamrutha

Suvarna to present first Kannada mythological daily Shivaleelamrutha

BANGALORE: Asianet’s Kannada GEC Suvarna is set to present Kannada television’s first daily mythological serial – Shivaleelamrutha.

Airing from 9 June, the serial is based on legendary stories of the Hindu deity Shiva.

Shivaleelamrutha will be telecast Monday to Friday, between 9 and 9.30 pm. It will replace Puranik’s historical daily serial ‘Sangoli Rayanna’ which has been moved to the weekend slot at the same time. The channel has roped in construction house Kristal as lead sponsor.

Producer-director Suneel Puranik has already canned 30 episodes (each 22-23 minutes long) of what could be a mega-opus spanning 260 episodes. The first phase calls for about 80 episodes.

“We are spending about Rs 150,000 per episode. If successful, we will extend it beyond 260 episodes,” informed Puranik while speaking to Indiantelevision.com. Puranik is the CEO of production house Samruddhi.

Each episode of a mythological like Shivaleelamrutha takes about three days to complete, as against two episodes per day for conventional serials, revealed Puranik. “One scene of around 4 minutes with animation and SFX, the background graphics, etc. took a whole day for composing, rendering and finishing,” added Puranik to stress that directing a mythological serial is a different ball game altogether as compared to conventional television content.

That Suvarana is betting big on this serial to bring in sagging ratings is obvious from the fact that it has set aside a Rs 6 million advertisement budget to be spent over 60 days. A big budget Kannada film spends less than this for marketing and advertisement, informs an industry source. Suvrana has booked 200 billboards across Karnataka and as well ads on major local newspapers across Karnataka to promote the serial.

Promos will run on both its channels – Suvarana and Suvarana News. The channel proposes to have radio jingles too. At present it is considering AIR, since the major Kannada stations in the city address a yuppie and younger generation, rather than the more serious Kannadiga. However, it has still not completely kept these stations off its radio advertisement radar altogether.

Cost of production has been the main inhibiting factor that has prevented the production of mythological serials in Karnataka. The Kannada industry does not permit dubbing of other language films and serials into Kannada. Hence, the Kannadiga has been deprived of mythological fare in the local lingo.

NDTV Imagine proved lucky with Ramayan and has restarted the trend with other GECs following suit. Suvarna hopes to repeat the same success recipe with Shivaleelamrutha in the state of Karnataka.

  • News should be a ‘paid’ asset

News should be a ‘paid’ asset

BENGALURU: Whether it’s the political battle that’s unraveling in the country, or it’s a terrorist attack, news always interests people. But is news as interesting as a gossip piece about a celebrity? This and a lot of other points were raised at the first day of the FICCI MEBC (Media and Entertainment Business Conclave) that saw a session that discussed the news genre. The discussion brought up several points including viewership data, content that is being broadcast and the current situation of the genre as a whole.

The panellists included BBC World News India COO Preet Dhupar, Udayvani group editor Ravi Hegde, Suvarna News editor Anantha Chinivar, Former CNN IBN journalist Veeraraghav, columnist Aakar Patel, NDTV resident editor Maya Sharma and IIM Bangalore dean Dr S Raghunath. The session was moderated by journalist Prakash Belawadi.

After the entire discussion, the panelists concluded that the genre relies heavily on advertising, thus restricting the kind of content that can be produced. At the same time, viewership data such as TAM (Television Audience Measurement) is needed because advertisers depend on such data to pool their money where they want to. “Producing news is expensive and that is why all channels have panel discussions in their primetime slot. It is cheaper than sending an OB van to some far off place and spend huge amount,” said Sharma.

Another point brought up during the discussion was about “sensationalising news”. The reason why many times news is sensationalised is because entertainment is more prominent than news. So, news journalists need to adapt to the entertainment form of style in order to grab eyeballs. But at the same time just getting viewers will not help because everyone is also looking for credibility of news, including the people watching it and the ones dispersing the news. Channels keep a close watch on other channels to know what they are reporting.

However, Hegde differed as he remarked that “media was not entertainment but a serious job”. Hegde, who comes from a print background, said that it’s a newspaper’s job to clear the confusion that channels have created the previous night for the viewers.

Talking about the revenue generated through advertising, Hegde said that most of the advertisements to newspapers come for the editions in the metros, making it difficult to distribute papers in the rural areas.

To this, Chinivar pointed that in order to beat entertainment news, the need to sensationalise news comes up.

Columnist Patel thinks that the standard of journalism in India is poor because of lack of good training and low salaries.

Veeraghav brought to fore the speculative nature of the Indian viewers that the channels have to continuously face. He remarked how many people question news channels’ nature to delve into the future, but they always want to know the future not what has happened. “If I tell a viewer that elections are going to happen, the first thing he will ask me is can you tell me who is going to win?” he said.

Although many channels have taken a strong stand against the TAM accusing it of fudging data to benefit advertisers, all the panellists agreed that there needs to be some kind of tracking to know the viewership for channels and newspapers because it is ultimately a business.

The fact that news is free is what makes it so volatile. “When you have to pay for your news, it will be taken seriously and that’s when the kind of news you get will also become better,” said Sharma. With digitisation coming in, they hope that some system will come in to place to help them get more revenues. News will become a paid asset in the future. “As long as news is free you cannot live without TAM or IRS,” Veerraghav ended.
