MTV launches clean-up drive with Sushant Singh Rajput to support Swachh Bharat

MUMBAI: After a successful ‘MTV’s Rock The Vote’ campaign last year, Viacom 18’s youth centric channel has launched the ‘MTV The Junkyard Project’.

‘MTV The Junkyard Project’ is an attempt to involve youth in cleanliness on ground, while adding fun quotient by blending in music and art. To lend his support to this initiative actor Sushant Singh Rajput picked up the broom to launch the campaign by sweeping a street in Mumbai as two bands played to cheer him. This event was hosted in association with JJ School of Arts, and kickstarts across 15 cities.

‘MTV The Junkyard Project’ will be integrating this campaign across all the screens including television, mobile, web with an on-ground outreach across 300 colleges and 15 city clean up drive. In addition, MTV is collaborating with musicians to create a music video with a strong messaging of ‘Swachh Bharat’. While music gets youth grooving, humor urges them to spread the message. In line with that, MTV is partnering with leading humorists across the country to create compelling yet funny videos that deliver the message loud and clear.

The channel is rolling out a massive 15 city clean up drive that identifies unofficial junkyards and convert them into art projects. The core idea is to create spaces that truly reflect the talent of the youth and their strong willingness to forge a new tomorrow.

Speaking about his association with the project, Rajput said, “For a young nation like India, real change can be brought out only if the young people decide to do something about it. While today everyone’s talking about making India clean, very few are working on developing sustainable models for achieving it. MTV The Junkyard Project is a unique initiative because it successfully marries the power of the youth along with solutions that are long term and enables them to have fun while executing the whole idea – which is brilliant! I am thoroughly excited to be a part of this splendid project and would like to tell them that we are awesome and urge them to be the agents of change!”

MTV EVP and business head Aditya Swamy added, “Warm is the new cool, young people care about the world they live in and believe that they can be powerful change agents. We at MTV have always created platforms for the youth to act and make a difference. This is a key part of what we do and we leverage all the assets of MTV to create a fun and impactful movement.”

  • YRF uses Howrah Bridge for ‘Detective Byomkesh Bakshi’ publicity

YRF uses Howrah Bridge for ‘Detective Byomkesh Bakshi’ publicity

KOLKATA: A group of 50 dancers brought out a flash mob on the iconic Howrah Bridge in Kolkata to mark its 72nd birthday today. Wearing the typical Bengali white dhoti, the group of dancers started dancing on the bridge early in the morning against the sound track ‘Calcutta Kiss’ from Dibakar Banerjee’s upcoming Hindi movie Detective Byomkesh Bakshi, which has been produced by Yash Raj Films.

Flash mobs are a common film promotional strategy in Bollywood or even Hollywood. This innovative campaign was praised by the city people and brand experts feel that YRF is leaving no stone unturned to publicize Detective Byomkesh Bakshi, which stars Sushant Singh Rajput in the lead role.

Carrying posters, which read ‘Happy Birthday Howrah Bridge’, the flash mob cheered for the iconic structure used by more than 1,20,000 vehicles and around 5,00,000 pedestrians to cross the Hooghly river flowing between the twin cities of Howrah and Kolkata. Howrah Bridge is a cantilever bridge with a suspended span over the Hooghly River in West Bengal.

The bridge is one of two on the Hooghly River and is a famous symbol of Kolkata. The third-longest cantilever bridge at the time of its construction, the Howrah Bridge is the sixth-longest bridge of its type in the world.

The flash mob was a promotional activity for the film, which is scheduled to be released on 3 April. Howrah Bridge, a British engineering marvel, was thrown open to commuters on 3 February, 1943 but never had a formal inauguration due to security issues during World War II.

Detective Byomkesh Bakshi is set in the same time zone as the birth of Howrah Bridge and the team was keen to honour the bridge in their way. The bridge is a very important element in the film which was also seen in the poster image,” said a statement from YRF.

Renamed as Rabindra Setu, the 705-metre-long cantilever bridge is among the busiest in the world.

  • Poster of ‘Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!’ launched in Kolkata

Poster of ‘Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!’ launched in Kolkata

KOLKATA: Director Dibakar Banerjee along with his lead actor, Sushant Singh Rajput, released the first look poster of the upcoming film Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! at the Great Eastern Hotel in Kolkata (now The Lalit Great Eastern Hotel).

The film Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! is set in the back drop of World War 2 and it captures the Calcutta (now Kolkata) of that time. The motion poster was also released as a fitting tribute to a World War II air-raid in the war-torn history of Kolkata.

Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! is an upcoming Hindi crime thriller film directed by Dibakar Banerjee and produced by Aditya Chopra in association with Yash Raj Films and Dibakar Banerjee Productions. The film is based on the detective character Byomkesh Bakshi created by the Bengali writer Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay and the film is titled ‘Detective Byomkesh Bakshy’ to make it more contemporary. The film stars Sushant Singh Rajput, Anand Tiwari and Swastika Mukherjee in principal roles. The film is scheduled for release on 10 April 2015.

Dibakar Banerjee told the media, “In late 1942 and early 1943, Calcutta was the last frontier of the British Empire, holding out against the Japanese invasion of Asia. As Japanese bombs were falling on Calcutta dockyard, around The Great Eastern Hotel, history was being created and Calcutta stepped on to the world stage. It’s right here that Byomkesh’s first adventure catapulted him from anonymity to dangerous fame. I can’t imagine a more fitting place to launch the first look of Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! than this hotel and right on this day in 1942, this would have been full of chaos and mayhem as bombs fell around it seventy years ago!”

Shooting for the film began in early 2014, and ended in May 2014.  A part of the movie has been shot in Kolkata and Mumbai. Some scenes were shot in an abandoned mill in Mumbai’s Byculla region.

“Shooting locations of the film in Kolkata was finalized in February 2012. Shooting did take place in Lalbazar, Presidency University, Coffee House and Bow Barracks. The cast was shooting for the film in Agarpara in January 2014,” said a cast member.

Dibakar Banerjee has paid attention to every detail and he further said that every aspect of his film brings back the bygone era.

“The planes seen on the poster of the film are the exact replica of the real Japanese planes which were used during the bombing in 1943. The planes at that time looked very different from the way the planes look today. Japan had done an aerial bombing attack on Calcutta and this is the central theme of the film,” he concluded.

  • ‘PK’…Mildly bubbly!

    ‘PK’…Mildly bubbly!

MUMBAI: The expectations from PK would, naturally, be as high as director Raju Hirani’s three earlier classic hits, the Munnabhai two and 3 Idiots have built. The basic theme remains the same: that of delivering a full-fledged sermon. If 3 Idiots was on education, PK serves to be a satire on the exploitation perpetuated in the name of religion by self-styled god men. This is not a mean thing to achieve for a believer, which most of us in India are. We can’t reject our God hence Hirani seeks outside help.

Aamir Khan is an alien who has been sent by his people to do a research on earthlings when they realised people similar to them exist on earth. Aamir’s folks on his planet do not believe in covering their naturally given body by outer layers like clothes and, hence, he lands in the far flung desert of Rajasthan totally nude. The only thing on his body is a pendant tied around his neck which is his remote to contact his spaceship when he is ready to return to his home planet.

As Aamir lands he sees an earthling near railway tracks who also gives him his first experience with the ways of earth people. This stranger tugs at his pendant and makes a run for it getting on to the running goods train. Aamir proceeds to the nearest town where he steals clothes from intimate lovers making it out in parked cars; money comes along in wallets of the stolen clothes and when it falls short there is always a blind beggar around to steal from.

In the town, Aamir comes across Sanjay Dutt, a helpful soul. Aamir has no language because on his planet people communicate mind to mind. He tries to grab hands of every woman he sees. Sanjay thinks Aamir is in a need of a woman and takes him to a whorehouse where he holds her hands for a few hours and transfers her vocabulary to himself.

Sanjay tells him that to find his remote; Aamir will have to go to Delhi where costly stolen goods are sold. However, not knowing where to start looking for his remote, he is told that only God can help him find his lost property. Aamir sets out in search of God but soon realises that different people hold different beliefs. He alternates between mandir, masjid and church in an attempt to find the real God. While his attempts create funny situations, it also conveys the hypocrisy as well as the contradictions of various faiths.

When a god man or a politician has to be exposed, a TV reporter in the story has become sort of mandatory. Here Anushka Sharma is the one. Her assignment is to ‘report’ a story on a suicidal puppy! That is when she spots Aamir doing his antics and always on the run as he keeps offending people of some religion or the other. She thinks there is a huge story here to which her boss, Boman Irani, does not agree. Anushka devotes her working hours and more to be with Aamir.

The search for his remote leads Aamir to a God man, Saurabh Shukla. Saurabh has bought the remote from the man who stole it and is passing it off as bead that fell from Lord Shiva’s Damroo. He declares to his devotees that God wills him to build a massive temple for this bead. This is his way to extract funds from his devotees. Anushka has an axe to grind with the Swami. Her parents are blind followers of Saurabh and she holds him responsible for breaking her romance with a Pakistani boy, Sushant Singh Rajput, while they are studying in Belgium.

She joins Aamir in exposing Saurabh. While Aamir only wants to prove that Saurabh’s communication with God is reaching ‘wrong number’, Anushka knows Aamir will unwittingly expose Saurabh to be a fraud. In a series of TV reports, Anushka manages to unmask all god men of all religions leading to a finale where Aamir and Saurabh come face to face on a TV debate. Anushka gets her love back, Aamir gets his remote and Saurabh loses everything.

PK does not quite bear the Raju Hirani stamp; while the script holds well through the first half and is fairly entertaining, its loses steam as the film proceeds into second half. While becoming a sermon on frauds operating as god men, the subject is dealt with at length and with better effect in OMG: Oh My God, which came out not very long ago. The end is rather tame until it brings Aamir back for the concluding scene. Raju Hirani is in his element but the script holds him back to some extent. Also, the film does not have a full-fledged romantic track. The film has a fairly good musical score with couple of hummable songs in Dil darbadar…. and Chaar kadam…, the others being thematic. The film needed some trimming for sure.

Aamir has to carry this film singularly on his shoulders and, being an alien, with limited expressions. However, he manages to put in a great performance conveying the innocence he is supposed to. Anushka Sharma is good. The others have bit roles with Sushant exuding great charm, Boman being his usual self and Sanjay having nothing much to do. Saurabh’s character is not properly etched.

PK has been released on a massive scale with enhanced admission rates and Christmas holidays to follow soon, which would aid it to a great extent to overcome its comparison with Hirani’s earlier films.

    Producers: Vinod Chopra, Raju Hirani.

    Director: Raju Hirani.

Cast: Aamir Khan, Anushka Sharma, Sanjay Dutt, Sushant Singh Rajput, Boman Irani, Saurabh Shukla.

Director Rajkumar Hirani decided on the destination post his visit to Bruges. He was impressed by Bruges’ alleys, picturesque canals and verdant ramparts and her elegant mysteriousness. The duo of Rajkumar Hirani and Vidhu Vinod Chopra have successfully partnered in some of the top Bollywood hits earlier including  ‘MunnaBhai MBBS’, ‘Lage Raho Munna Bhai’ and ‘3 idiots.’ Among these, ‘3 Idiots’ was the highest grosser at the box office in 2009, and the film also featured Aamir Khan among others in the star cast. PK brings this successful team back after a gap of five years.

The other enchanting cities are Ghent, Antwerp and Brussels. Even though Indians are now travelling to various parts of the globe, Bruges is the brightest gemamongst the medieval cities of Europe.
