    Supernatural genre gives writers most creative liberty

    MUMBAI: Writers of the popular TV show Naagin, Mukta Dhond and  Mrinal Jha, explored the scope of the supernatural genre at The Content Hub 2020 organised by indiantelevision.com.

    Dhond said that the most exciting thing about fantasy is that it gives creative liberty to writers. As they say, anything is possible in the fantasy world which usually is not possible in other human stories. Human situations give you certain amount of possibilities but in fantasy there is so much more that is possible. There are some real stories; outside of that there is a whole world of small creatures who have power. Naagin is a female superhero; there are very few female superheroes worldwide, especially here in India.

    “Naagin is a woman who does what she wants to do. She is a woman who has power. She is able to fight back and take revenge, but the world doesn’t hate her. The character can do unimaginable things that we cannot think of. She tells people that they are wrong and the Indian audience accepts it. Naagin is somebody like just you and I. But they are able to speak their mind. The funniest part of doing Naagin is that there is no limit, anyone can turn around and do anything. You are free to write what you want. You can just close your eyes and think something, the fantasy world takes you there. That is the beauty of supernatural shows,” said Dhond.

    According to the panelists, for several years the supernatural genre was missing on Indian television. Aahat was the only show that continued for a long time. Otherwise no one  wanted to venture into it. And later Naagin and Nazar happened which opened the door for plenty more shows.

    They believe that the most exciting part for writers working on fantasy is the thought of coming up with unique ideas. It gives you the liberty to think out of the box.

    Jha said that the supernatural genre also demands pace in writing which sometimes is a challenge. "The events of each minute are very high generally and you cannot borrow from the real life around you. You have to imagine constantly and keep creating. The plots and twists have to be new every time. That is the exciting part. But the struggle is to find something new to tell every week,” she said.

    Sharing the same sentiments, Dhond said: “People in India have less patience. They want romance, action, drama, and revenge – all in one episode. The story that I finish in six months in a daily soap, it is over in its fourth week in Naagin. So, the volume of content generation that happens in fantasy shows like Naagin or Nazar becomes high. It is like surprising yourself and the audience every day.”

    India’s obsession with knowing the future and foretelling gave birth to their new show Divya Drishti. The story is about a girl who can see the future.

    “Also, what happens while writing shows like Naagin, Nazar and  Divya Drishti is that you discover the classification of what is called supernatural. For example, Nazar is a creature horror. Why is it a creature horror and why isn’t it a superhero is an interesting classification because they dictate how you tell the story. This is the key part of doing supernatural, you are able to identify sharply as to what is the template of the story that you are portraying,” said Jha.

    While answering the question of picking a genre while making a career in writing, Dhond said, "I started my career by writing for a supernatural genre. The first book which I did was called "November Rain" which later went on to become a series on Zee TV called Tum Bin Jaaoon Kahaan. I wrote lot of Mano Ya Na Mano at that time. It just came my way. Eventually I discovered my interest in that genre.”

    MUMBAI: Remember shows like Aahat aired on Sony Entertainment Television, Woh and The Zee Horror Show on Zee TV? Recall those scary faces, the revolting dead bodies, flying furniture and conjured up fires from nowhere with special effects, because that was what was usually ‘patent’ for a horror show? Well, decades after such ‘horror’ shows almost vanished from prime time, supernatural is making a big time comeback on Indian television.

    The 90s of the previous century saw a few broadcasters and production houses going gaga over supernatural or horror fiction series, but after a certain period of time the genre was almost wiped off. Now, from Daayans to a shape shifting wolf to Naaginsto Makhi, Hindi GEC has recently witnessed number of aspects of the supernatural element. But only Colors seems to have cracked the supernatural code. It started with Naagin and the trend of supernatural characters after that has become unstoppable.

    In the first week of its launch, the weekend fiction show Naagin overtook the top five programmes on Hindi GECs. After breaking records with Naagin, its production house Balaji Telefilm’s is all set to launch a new show Kawach… Kaali Shaktiyon Se also on Colors, yet another supernatural show based on exorcism.

    An industry source close to the people involved with Naagin revealed to Indiantelevision.com that the show cost is between Rs 20 – 25 lakh per episode. On the ad rates front, Naagin commands about Rs 1.5 lakh for a 10 second slot. A sources close to the channel informed that the production cost of Balaji’s Kawach has been estimated at between Rs 15-20 lakhs per episode.

    Speaking on the success of Naagin Colors programming head Manisha Sharma said, “Series like Naagin are edgy, they move faster and you can experiment with them. They don’t follow the grammar of soaps. We had this 8pm slot vacant and luckily we were the first one to encash it.”

    “We are truly a variety entertainment channel. We give audiences soaps like Naagin, comedy shows, reality such as India’s Got Talent and Fear Factor. Our strategy is ‘Let’s put up the variety and be ahead of the game’. We were first ones to do Naagin and we will be first ones to do Kawach. There is a huge bunch of people that watch such shows and we are just trying to open up that market in India,” explained Sharma.

    Speaking about the trend, a senior creative director said, “The Makhi element was used in Sasural Simar Ka to increase TRPs’ that eventually didn’t happen. If we talk about Naagin, it is just a revenge story, but it is packed with good content and strong casting. Naagin undoubtedly is a well-crafted story. “

    “Supernatural characters have been used by many in their shows, but for some they didn’t work out well. Shows like Vishkanyaand Adhuri Kahani Humari failed to generate positive ratings even after using power packed VFX. Ideas can be supernatural but they need to be well crafted,” said another creative head.

    From the ratings it’s clear the Vishkanya launched by Zee TV on 28 March at 6.30 pm time band from Monday- Friday failed to garner positive ratings for the channel. According to the BARC data, in week 18 the show garnered 2029 Impressions ‘000s while in week 19 the channel witnessed a slight hike in ratings with 2107 Impressions ‘000s but in week 20 and week 21 ratings just nosedived with 1648 Impressions ‘000s and 1347 Impressions ‘000s respectively.

    On the other hand, another Balaji show on &TV, Yeh Kahan Aa Gaye Hum launched on 26 October at the 9.30 time slot fromMonday- Friday had to include the track of a cursed tiger with supernatural elements to pep up its ratings. In week 18, the show recorded, 1142 Impressions ‘000s while in week 19 and 20 ratings were slightly increased from 1255 Impressions ’000s and 1298 Impressions ‘000s. But again in week 21, the show saw a dip in ratings and recorded 1297 Impressions ‘000s.

    Adhuri Kahani Hamari on &TV was about reincarnation also revolved around a snake went off air on 13 May. The show failed to garner positive ratings for the channel. In week 18, the show recorded 726 Impressions ‘000s, while in week 19, the show closed at 1025 Impressions ‘000s.

    While speaking with Indiantelevision in an earlier interview, RBNL CEO Tarun Katial had said, “One horror show starts many starts, one crime show starts many others to make them, it’s a trend. People do enough of the genre and then they move to the next one.”

    Katial further added, “I think that content is getting more innovative and more lateral. People are thinking of different ways of storytelling. We have to put imagination around this. You know if we were to call Naagin regressive then we should also callVampire Diaries regressive but we watch Vampire Diaries and we don’t call it regressive. All the sci-fi or supernatural that goes around on American television, we don’t call it regressive because it comes from Hollywood.”

    “These all are disruptive trends In fact as far as regular story telling goes, every show needs to outshout others so either there is a high point or there is some action or outdoor that happened because when you do something like horror fiction or supernatural you draw lot of attention and if your story telling is strong you retain that attention which then converts into ratings. I think from time to time makers keep doing this to get that spike. But this can be a trap if you are doing things, those things should not damage the credibility of the show,” opined a senior producer.

    Whether it is the broadcaster and production house that are producing such creative content just to create the buzz and for high ratings, it has definitely managed to engross audiences. Balaji Telefilms which is famous for all the typical Saas – Bahu dramas and reincarnation love stories is slowly moving ahead with the supernatural mantra.

    Colors has already announced that it will come back with Naagin season 2 soon and now it’s Kawach that is all set to scare small screens viewers. These are interesting times and it will be interesting to see that how Colors and Balaji encash their new offerings.

    AXN-Star World Premier HD: the coming battle

    MUMBAI: The other day, we reported about Star Network’s soon-to-be-launched channel, Star World Premier HD, which promises all the latest shows, close to their first US telecast.

    However, there’s at least one other English entertainment channel which claims to be already doing what Star is now planning to do.

    We’re talking about AXN, which maintains it has been thoroughly researching what Indian audiences want to watch for the past one year. It was last year when the channel lured a former Sony Entertainment Television professional Sunil Punjabi from Cinemax as business head to help build a stronger brand in the Indian context. Prior to that, AXN was run out of its regional Singapore office.

    And Punjabi has since been working on a blue print, studying Indian viewing habits with the intention of fine-tuning AXN’s Indian programming accordingly.

    Says a media observer: “With the spread of the broadband internet and availability of current US and international shows online freely and the fact that an increasing number of Indians are travelling internationally, Indian viewers have been spoilt for choice and want to be one with international TV programming and lifestyle trends.”

    AXN’s research also apparently reflected this. And thus was born its new premise.
    Elaborates Punjabi: “People want to watch shows which are airing currently closer to their airing in the US and in the last one year, we have been doing this consistently – adding shows closer to their telecast in the US.”

    AXN, which has been around for over 15 years, is therefore adding a host of new shows to strengthen its three programming pillars: soaps, reality shows and films.
    So what about Star’s upcoming channel? “To be frank, we experimented with the same proposition long back that Star is now offering,” quips Punjabi, pointing out that it would be alluring to a much smaller bunch of viewers.

    As compared to Star World Premier HD which is priced at Rs 60 on Tata Sky, AXN is carrying a slimmer price tag of Rs 25. Additionally, the former, says Punjabi, is only available right now on a la carte basis whereas AXN is available in packages too. Besides, he believes AXN also has the first mover’s advantage.

    Among the new offerings, AXN has already launched the End of the World (EOW) series comprising six four-hour-long installments which is airing Monday to Thursday. Whereas, Voice 5 – a singing talent hunt – will be launched within three days of its US premiere on 28 September and Supernatural (Season 9) within two days of its US debut 11 October onwards.

    Meanwhile, Top Gear and The Hero will be telecast on 18 October and Sherlock and So you think you can dance? will premiere during Diwali. Orphan Black, a thriller about human cloning will also premiere around the same time.

    On the subject of Supernatural – one of AXN’s biggest franchises viewed by teens, especially girls and NCSI – which caters to a gender-neutral and more mature audience, Punjabi says: “We have a mix of content; hence, we don’t focus on any particular gender. There is something for everyone.”

    The channel has its loyal set of fans but also wants to create entertainment for its ‘snacky’ viewers. “With the new series including Hannibal and Supernatural that have seasons, we are building on the loyal fan base, while the new reality shows are for these viewers who snack more on such fare,” informs Punjabi.

    Currently, AXN airs currently running US shows on Fridays, while movies and reality shows are aired on weekends. With the English movie genre being bigger, the channel wants to concentrate on that as well.

    But has the AXN team been making a noise about these new shows? Apparently, it’s a 360 degree focus with print, television, outdoor and digital as key elements. Last year, AXN’s Facebook page had a few thousand likes; this year, it has swelled to nearly 1.3 million.

    “The digital front is important to us and we are aggressively strengthening the platform. Because it is one of the primary drivers of conversation related to the channel and shows. Also, we want to show newer content online,” says Punjabi.

    While AXN may claim it has been working at refreshing its programming long before Star announced plans of launching its niche new channel, it is now up to the audience to decide which of the two is really walking the talk.

    Blinkbox offering free preview of US pilots

    MUMBAI: Blinkbox has reached agreements with Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment, Warner Bros, HBO and BBC Worldwide to offer customers a free preview of pilot episodes of series before purchasing.

     

    From 24 July to 19 August, customers can preview such series as True Blood, Supernatural, The Americans, The Following and The Wire. Also included are The Big Bang Theory, The Newsroom, Entourage, American Horror Story, Arrow, Veep and The Vampire Diaries, among others. Customers can try as many shows as they’d like during the period.

     

    Blinkbox’s CEO Michael Comish commented: “Great TV continues to be one of our biggest obsessions and the fuel for many conversations. There’s more choice than ever before thanks to services like ours and our insights told us that customers relished the opportunity to try TV before committing to purchase. After all, life’s too short to watch something that you’re just not into.”

    AXN looks at paranormal phenomenon with ‘Supernatural’

    MUMBAI: The action oriented AXN will be a new show Supernatural. It will air every Thursday from 3 August at 11 pm

    The show blends action, drama, mystery with a dash of science-fiction. Supernatural is a tale of two brothers, bound by destiny and disaster to battle the evil forces of the paranormal. Poles apart, the Winchester brothers are compelled to travel all around the country to hunt out the eerie creatures of urban legends and folklore that you thought were all just made-up.

    When their mother, Mary, was taken from the family 20 years ago by unseen evil forces, the brothers’ father John embarked on a mission against the supernatural to avenge his wife’s death. Bringing the two young boys with him on his strange missions, John brought them up to hunt and fight the unexplained – whether they wanted to or not.

    Sam Winchester (Jared Padalecki) is the younger brother – the “normal” one. A law student trying to escape the eccentric lifestyle his father mapped out, Sam gladly traded his ghost-hunting for college and a perfect girlfriend, and hasn’t seen his brother Dean (Jensen Ackles) for 4 years. When the latter turns up suddenly on Sam’s doorstep with the news that their father has vanished, he has little choice but to join Dean in a search for their father.

    Supernatural is about fate, family and the choices we make – taking viewers into the dark and twisted world of phantom-hunting. In between the undercurrents of rivalry, the estranged brothers learn more about themselves and their family, and face up to a journey in which anything can happen – and does.

    The younger Winchester brother, Sam never fully understood the path his father and brother have taken, and consequently has tried to separate himself from them by leaving for college straight from high school. With an affectionate and caring girlfriend and a potential law career, Sam almost has the perfect life he yearns for, until his estranged older brother turns up at his door with news that their father has disappeared.

    Despite the dislike for his family’s strange lifestyle, Sam is obliged to leave his peaceful life, and return to his tumultuous destiny in a search for his missing father. Armed with heavy reluctance and grounded practicality, Sam is thrown into the sinister world he tried so hard to avoid – and while chasing bogeymen, phantom legends and angry child spirits, comes to relearn more about his brother and himself, and begins to accept the fate and father he rejected.

    Worlds apart from his brother Sam, Dean has taken his father’s mission on himself – pursuing all things supernatural and evil. Arrogant, brash and impulsive, the older Winchester brother’s fearlessness and indifference to the law in the face of his quest belie the emotional scars his mother’s death left on him, as well as an unexpected softer side.

    Dean is older and thus remembers more of his mother’s death, and understands why his father was driven obsessively to avenge himself on the paranormal. This bad-boy carries his fierce aggression into his work, and is wild enough to do just about anything, especially taking on the terrifying path he has chosen for himself. His father’s sudden vanishing however leaves him unsettled, and forces him to come out of his strange life to reunite with his younger brother for a quest unlike any they have ever experienced before.
