  • Zee Classic to air multi-star period drama ‘Raaj Tilak’

Zee Classic to air multi-star period drama ‘Raaj Tilak’

MUMBAI: Zee Classic, India’s only classic Hindi movie channel, adhering to its core proposition ‘Woh Zamaana Kare Deewana’ will present Rajkumar Kohli’s Raaj Tilak for the first time on Sunday, July 12 at 9 PM. Raaj Tilak, an action period drama, boasts of an incredible starcast including Dharmendra, Sunil Dutt, Raaj Kumar, Kamal Hassan, Hema Malini, Ranjeeta Kaur, Reena Roy, Yogeeta Bali and Sarika.

Raaj Tilak revolves around a King who has many enemies including his own trusted men: Bhavani Singh (Ajit) and Ranjeet (Madan Puri). The lust for power makes Bhavani Singh do the unthinkable. He ends up killing the King and is the catalyst in abducting the only legal heir to the throne. The devastated queen is consoled by her rakhi brother Arjun Singh (Pran) who offers his son to her, but falls prey to the evil plans of Bhavani Singh who switches his own child Shamsher Singh (grown up- Raj Kiran) with Arjun Singh’s newborn Jai Singh (grown up- Sunil Dutt).

Years later, the King’s chief Samadh Khan (Raaj Kumar) who had been falsely accused as a traitor and exiled from the land returns to amend everything that was wrong. With the help of two warriors Jai Singh (Sunil Dutt) and Zohravar Singh (Dharmendra) and a gypsy Suraj (Kamal Hassan), Samadh Khan is on a mission to find the true heir.

Will the real prince surface to set things right or will he continue to live the life of a gypsy without knowing his true legacy?

  • From reel to real: Actors piggy ride on populist parties

From reel to real: Actors piggy ride on populist parties

NEW DELHI: When megastar Amitabh Bachchan decided in the mid-eighties to wash his hands off politics (except on screen), one expected that very few from his fraternity would dare take the plunge.

However, there were a few like Raj Babbar, Shatrughan Sinha and Sunil Dutt who entered politics. Perhaps the only notable entry from the Hindi cinema industry after that was Vinod Khanna, though several south Indian actors either joined the state or centre arena.

The love between the two magnified as many political parties, particularly Bharatiya Janata Party and Trinamool Congress went all out to woo those from the reel world to the real world. Perhaps this exposure to politics and largely the anti-corruption wave that swept the country in the wake of Anna Hazare’s movement resulted in probably the largest number of film personalities entering the fray for the 2014 polls.

The 16th Lok Sabha elections saw as many as 40 film personalities from different states, representing different parties campaigning, and many of them surprised all by coming out with flying (party) colours.

But for the film industry, the constituencies that were worth watching were the ones where the members of the same fraternity pitted against each other.

Of the most keenly watched battles was of Kirron Kher of the Bharatiya Janata Party and Aam Admi Party’s Gul Panag. Kher was shown black flags when she first went to Chandigarh, unlike Panag and yet, Kher came out with flying colours. She defeated a veteran like Pawan Kumar Bansal of the Congress, though many from her constituency said it was more a victory of the party than of the actor herself.

Similarly, Mumbai West saw item girl Rakhi Sawant who represented the Rashtriya Aam Party battling it out with Mahesh Manjrekar who represented the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and ultimately emerged as the winner.

The not-so-‘khamosh’ Shatrughan Sinha once again successfully represented the BJP from Patna Saheb in Bihar where he faced Bhojpuri actor Kunal Singh of the Congress.

In Birbhum, actor Satabdi Roy of the Trinamool Congress successfully trounced actor Joy Banerjee of the BJP. Similarly, Singer Indranil Sen from TMC expectedly trounced Sidhanth Mahapatra of the Biju Janata Dal from Behrampur.

For the BJP, versatile singer Bablu Supriya from Asansol, senior actor Hema Malini in Mathura despite initial criticism, Hindi and Bhojpuri actor Manoj Tiwari in North East Delhi, versatile actor Paresh Rawal from Ahmedabad East, and veteran Vinod Khanna from Gurdaspur emerged winners.

Television actress Smiriti Irani from the high-profile constituency Amethi lost but with a considerably reduced margin, and others who lost included Nimu Bhowmik in Raiganj, George Baker representing Howrah and music maestro Bappi Lahiri from Serampore.

For the Trinamool Congress, glamorous actor Moon Moon Sen in Bankura, reigning Bengali star Deb (Deepak Adhikari) in Ghatal, Sandhya Sen in Midnapore, actor Arpita Ghosh in Balurghat, and actor Tapas Paul in Krishnagar reached the finishing line ahead of the others, while actor Soumitra Roy from Malda North, and former Bollywood star Biswajit (Chatterjee) from New Delhi had to face defeat.

The Congress had the largest number of star losers. They included Kannada heroine Ramya in Mandya, the high profile Raj Babbar in Ghaziabad, actor Aparajita Mohanty in Cuttack, veteran Oriya film actor Bijay Mohanty from Bhubaneswar, Hindi and Bhojpuri actor Ravi Kishan from Jaunpur, petite actress Nagma in Meerut, actor Jayasudha in Secunderabad, actor Vijaya Shanthi from Medak, and D Napoleon from Perambalur in Tamil Nadu who was a Minister in the outgoing government.

The AAP faced a similar fate with TV actress Rina Rani who contested from Maharajganj and the actor-dancer Javed Jaffery (son of former comedy actor Jagdeep) from Lucknow being shown the door.

Actor Innocent representing the Communist Party of India (Marxist) from Chalakkudy in Kerala emerged victor, while renowned award-winning director Prakash Jha representing the Janata Dal (United) from West Champaran in Bihar and former actor Jayaprada of Rashtriya Lok Dal from Bijnor had to face defeats.

Actor Murali Mohan won from the Rajahmundry seat for the Telugu Desam Party.

At present, the Rajya Sabha has Javed Akhtar, Jaya Bachchan, Mithun Chakraborty, K Chiranjeevi, Rekha and producer T Subbarami Reddy as members. Smriti Irani who lost to Rahul Gandhi also continues to be member of the Rajya Sabha.

One cannot ignore the fact that while Bollywood has generally not been very successful in north India, the southern film industry is rich with examples of film-politicians. Some of the popular names are S S Rajendran (SSR), M G Ramachandran, J Jayalalithaa , S Chandrasekar.

It remains to be seen if the film personalities will rise above to serve the people or will add glamour to the lower house of Parliament.

  • Sanjay Dutt sings Qawali after 41 years in Apoorva Lakhia’s ‘Zanjeer’

Sanjay Dutt sings Qawali after 41 years in Apoorva Lakhia’s ‘Zanjeer’

Actor Sanjay Dutt, who had acted as member of a qawali party forty-one years earlier in his father Sunil Dutt’s Reshma aur Shera as a child artiste, will be rendering a qawali once again as the iconic Sher Khan in the forthcoming re-imagined version of Zanjeer.

While the new version being released on 7 September stars Ramsharan and Priyanka Chopra with Sanjay Dutt, the original starred megastar Amitabh Bachchan – who was also an artiste in Reshma aur Shera – with Jaya Bachchan.

Sanjay’s formal debut had come years later in his father’s film Rocky, which went on to be a massive hit. Today after 41 years in the industry, Sanjay has over 150 films in his kitty.

Dutt has donned a never-seen-before look. His look as Sher Khan which was revealed some time back in the trailer has already been admired by audiences.

The actor himself was extremely psyched about doing the qawali sequence in the song Khochey Pathan Ki Zubaan and director Apoorva Lakhia is confident that this will be one of Sanjay Dutt’s most memorable performances on the big screen.

Along with Sanjay Dutt Apoorva Lakhia’s tour de force Zanjeer stars an elite ensemble cast of Ram Charan, Priyanka Chopra, Prakash Raj, Mahie Gill and Atul Kulkarni.

Zanjeer has been produced by Reliance Entertainment, Puneet Prakash Mehra, Sumeet Prakash Mehra and Flying Turtle Films, and co-produced by Rampage Motion Pictures.

  • SC to give judgement on Dutt’s surrender deadline extension plea tomorrow

SC to give judgement on Dutt’s surrender deadline extension plea tomorrow

MUMBAI: The Supreme Court will declare its decision on the extension of Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt surrender deadline tomorrow.

Dutt had, on Monday, appealed to the Supreme Court of India that he be given some more time to surrender before he begins his prison term citing work commitments.

Last month court announced its decision to sentence Dutt to five years in prison for illegal possession of weapons supplied by Muslim mafia bosses linked to the terror attack that killed 257 people in Mumbai.

The actor has maintained that he knew nothing about the bombing plot and that he asked for the guns to protect his family during sectarian riots in Mumbai.

Son of legendary actors Sunil Dutt and Nargis, Dutt has previously served 18 months in jail on the same charges. He was released later and the actor has since then resurrected his acting career and delivered some appreciated performances. He won a lot of adulation for his portrayal of the ruthless Kancha Cheena in the 2012 remake of blockbuster Agneepath (by the same name).

  • Ranbir Kapoor made first brand ambassador for BlackBerry

NEW DELHI: Research In Motion (RIM) today announced that Bollywood superstar Ranbir Kapoor is its first brand ambassador in India and will endorse BlackBerry products across various platforms and also feature in upcoming multimedia ad campaigns in India.

Known for his unconventional roles as a young and vibrant actor, Ranbir Kapoor is also widely known as a tech savvy star.

Speaking on the occasion Ranbir Kapoor said, “I am ecstatic to be part of the BlackBerry boys’ family. As an actor I recognize the power of communication so naturally, and the need to stay connected with friends within and outside of our industry and loved ones. BlackBerry is known for its unique and powerful communication experience; an experience that I have relied on over years to stay informed and connected to things that matter so closely to me while on the move. BlackBerry is a brand that has a legacy of bringing innovative products keeping in mind the Indian market and I am keenly looking forward to this association.”

RIM (India) MD Sunil Dutt said, “We are excited to announce Ranbir Kapoor as our first brand ambassador in India. Ranbir truly personifies all the attributes that we endeavor to offer to our customers –enthusiasm, exuberance, persistence, excellence, fun, youthfulness, innovation and connecting with people and we recognize this great synergy between us. Moreover, we admire the fact that he is not only the face of contemporary Indian Cinema but he is also someone who represents the ideal source of inspiration for the youth of the current generation.”

  • BBDO creates BlackBerry’s new ‘Action’ campaign

MUMBAI: BlackBerry has launched a new advertising campaign in Asia Pacific focusing on the spirit that drives the Asian youth – action.

Created by BBDO India, the campaign capitalises on the truth that BlackBerry has always been about making things happen, the company said.

BBDO India chairman and chief creative officer Josy Paul said, “It all started when Sunil Dutt, the new head of India operations for RIM asked us the all important question ‘What does BlackBerry stand for?‘ We developed the idea that every BlackBerry is born for action. There‘s an inherent urgency for action built into it. Look at the red splat that appears every time you get a message. The sign refuses to go away until you take action. The first thing we do when we wake up in the morning is check for the red splat. That‘s how we created the launch ad ‘Action now has a symbol‘ and the brand line ‘Action starts here‘. That‘s what differentiates BlackBerry from other mobile phones.”

Bringing the red splat to the forefront leverages one of the brand‘s properties that consumers connect to.

“It‘s what we call a useful idea. We all have things we talk about doing. We hope the idea will inspire people to stop sitting on the things they‘ve been wanting to do,” BBDO India CEO Ajai Jhala added.

The new red splat that resides in every Blackberry phone will now be the symbol of action. The symbol is an integral part of the ‘action‘ campaign that will run across all touch points including TV, print, OOH and digital.
