    International Emmy receives a record no. of entries

    MUMBAI: The International Academy of Television, Arts and Sciences’ Emmy co-chairs Catherine Mackay regional CEO US, Australasia and Asia and CEO Fremantle Media Enterprises; and Larry Gershman chairman and CEO World International Network LLC, announced that the Academy received a record number of entries for the 32nd International Emmy Awards competition, says a company release.

    Up four per cent from 2003, almost 608 programs have been submitted from over 40 countries, this year. The awards will be presented at the annual awards show on 22 November 2004 in New York City.”We are delighted that there is a first-time entry, a drama series, from the country of Cambodia and that the number of entries from South African producers has quadrupled. I would like to extend my warm thank you to contributing countries for another great year of international television; the quality of the programming entered represents excellence beyond our expectations,” said Gershman.

    The first round of judging began mid-May in New York City; the semi-final judging process of the International Emmy competition will take place around the world this summer.

    The final round will take place in September and the nominees will be announced at a press conference in Cannes at Mipcom on 4 October 2004. This year’s sponsors, include: Hewlett Packard, Sun Media China, Microsoft, Reed Midem, Savvis, Sofitel Hotels, Ascent Media, and Variety, confirms the release.

    “The number and geographical reach of countries that entered this year into the International Emmy competition is amazing and shows the strength of the Academy members who did outreach in their regions as well as the clout of the Emmy name. As the Emmy Co-Chair, I am especially pleased that our organization is expanding in both entries and membership,” said MacKay.

    In addition to the presentation of the International Emmy Awards, the Academy will present three special awards. The International Emmy Directorate Award will be given to Tele-München Group (TMG) managing director Herbert Kloiber for his outstanding achievement in global television broadcasting.

    MTV International will receive the International Emmy Founders Award for revolutionizing music on television and supporting the fight against HIV/AIDS around the world. MTV Networks International president Bill Roedy will accept the award on behalf of MTV. Than there is Veteran Australian Channel Nine broadcaster Len Mauger who will receive the Ted Cott Award for his dedication to the Academy. 

    The International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences is one of the largest organizations of global broadcasters, with members from 61 countries and over 250 companies. It was chartered in 1969 to honour and encourage excellence in television programming outside the United States by presenting the International Emmy Award.

  • Airey, Marenzi are dinner co-chairs of 31st Emmies

    NEW YORK: Sky Networks MD Dawn Airey and Paramount International Television president Gary Marenzi will serve as dinner co-chairs for 31st International Emmy Awards Gala. The event will take place on 24 November 2003 in New York City.
    International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences president Fred Cohen said: “The International TV Academy is very pleased to have Dawn and Gary, two international television visionaries, as the co-chairs this year. Their participation will greatly add to our special evening when we honor the best in global television programming.”
    Airey said: “I am honoured to partner with Gary Marenzi to promote this wonderful International Emmy Gala event. As a board member of the International TV Academy, I truly appreciate the opportunity to further the goal of supporting and encouraging excellence in global broadcasting.”
    The names of the host and presenters will be announced in the coming months. The judging of the International Emmys is taking place around the world. Nominees will be announced at Cannes at MIPCOM on 10 October 2003. This year’s sponsors, to-date, include Hewlett Packard, Sun Media China, Eurasia Media Forum, Reed Midem, Air France and Variety.
