  • Sun Media, Lenovo Grp to develop broadband business in China

    MUMBAI: Sun Media Investment Holdings Ltd., (led by Chinese broadcaster Yang Lan) and the Lenovo Group have formed a joint venture -Sun 365 Multi-media Holdings Ltd., to develop broadband multimedia content and applications in China. The agreement was signed in July 2004.

    According to the agreement, the aggregate valuation of Sun 365 is $15 million. Sun Media Investment and Lenovo hold 85 per cent and 15 per cent respectively in the new joint venture. Sun Media will bring to the new company a multimedia production subsidiary in mainland China along with certain marketing rights in connection with the exploitation of Yang Lan’s brand image, and a certain amount of cash.

    Lenovo’s non-cash contribution includes the right to use its existing brand FM365. The JV will have the right of first refusal to bundle multimedia content services with the personal computers, mobile communication devices and handsets sold under the Lenovo brand in China. The cooperation is a non-exclusive one. Yang LAN will be the chairperson of the Board of Sun 365.

    The new partnership has been formed keeping in mind the huge potential of the emerging broadband multimedia market in China. The principal business of Sun 365 will be to develop multimedia businesses including creation of content and copyrights and development of distribution networks. The detailed applications of the business model of the JV are still under development and no further details are disclosed as of now.

  • Sun Media Group China’s Bruno Wu named chairman of iEMMYs Festival

    NEW YORK: The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced today the appointment of Bruno Wu, group CEO of Sun Media China and director of the Academy Board, as chairman of the iEMMYs Festival, an initial mandate of two years, renewable.
    Bruce Paisner, president of Hearst Entertainment and the chairman of International TV Academy, has been the iEMMYs Festival chairman since its inception in 1999.
    “We are very pleased to announce that Bruno Wu, long-time friend of the International TV Academy, is taking over the role of iEMMYs Festival Chairman. Bruno’s support of the Academy for the past several years has been enormous. He helped to create, and currently chairs, the iTVi (Interactive Television International), which now publishes the world’s most extensive weekly newsletter on interactive television. Bruno’s dedication and international broadcast experience will enhance the iEMMYs Festival, where we present the latest trends in global programming as well as feature our International Emmy-nominated producers and directors with their world-class programs,” said Paisner.
    “Sun Media has been a major supporter of the iEMMYs Festival events, and I was given the opportunity to offer input for the direction of the Festival.     The 5th iEMMYs Festival is scheduled to take place at the Sofitel Hotel New York on Sunday, 23 November, 2003. The 31st International Emmy Awards Gala will take place on Monday, 24 November, 2003. Both events will take place in New York City. The 2003 International Emmy Award Gala will also honor Greg Dyke, director-general of the BBC with the International Emmy Directorate Award and honor HBO with the International Emmy Founders Award for their original programming.

  • Star wins landing rights for Mandarin channel in China

    MUMBAI: Rupert Murdoch’s Star Group has won nationwide landing rights for Xing Kong Wei Shi, its Mandarin-language entertainment channel.
    With this , it joins the league of 29 other broadcasters having similar rights. These include Bloomberg TV, CNN, CNBC, BBC, Sun Media, Now and TVB 8 of Hong Kong.
    According to a release, Star, which is wholly owned by News Corp, is the only foreign broadcaster to have both landing rights in Guangdong and nationwide hotels.
    AOL Time Warner, on the other hand is still awaiting approval to air CETV throughout the country, the report adds.
    Star Group, has signed an agreement with China International Television Corp which will enable its Xing Kong Wei Shi channel to be available nationally in China’s hotels which have a three-star rating and above, as well as compounds where overseas Chinese reside.
