    Kerala sweeps tourism publicity awards, American tourist bags writers’s award

    NEW DELHI: Kerala swept the publicity awards in the National Tourism Awards for the year 2014-15 with as many as three awards apart frpm an award to a foreign tourist for writing about the state.

    The Tourism Departments of Kerala and Gujarat jointly shared the Tourism award Most Innovative use of Information Technology – Social Media / Mobile App.

    Ms Stephanie Pearson of the United States received the award for feature on Kerala, “The Green Heaven”.

    The Tourism Department of Kerala received two other awards: for the coffee table volume on“Kerala & The Spice Routes”, and their Brochure “The Great Backwaters (Das Faszinierendste Gewässer der Erde)” in German Language in the category of Excellence in Publishing in Foreign Language other than English.

    The Best Tourism Film award went to Department of Tourism of Daman & Diu for the film “Ilha De Calma”.

    The Department of Tourism of Telangana for their coffee Table Book “Ancient Temples of Telangana” in the category of Best Tourism Promotion Publicity Material by States and Union Territories.

    The awards were given away over the weekend by Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan who said tourists are the Brand Ambassadors of their respective countries and Tourism is a mode of improving the image of their countries abroad.

    All the persons involved in Tourism industry are the Flag Bearers of the country. The continuous strive for service excellence is all the more important as India’s Tourism Sector is on an upward growth track.

    Tourism Minister Mahesh Sharma and Secretary Vinod Zutshi also spoke on the occasion.

    In all, 74 Awards were presented in various segments of the travel, tourism and hospitality industry. Tourism Ministers of many States, Central and State Government Officials, Members from the Travel and Hospitality Industries, including leading Hoteliers, Travel Agents and Tour Operators and Travel Media attended the function.

    Digital India aimed at creating knowledge-based society: Speaker tells MPs

    NEW DELHI: Observing that the digital age is going to dominate the future, Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan has said the Digital India Programme is a giant leap in the endeavour to create a digitally empowered and knowledge-based society.

    Inaugurating an Orientation Programme on ‘Digital India Implementation’ for Members of Parliament in Parliament Library Building yesterday, she emphasized that many may not be well acquainted with Digital India as it was a relatively new phenomenon but it was imperative that Members as people’s representatives gain the right knowledge through this familiarization programme for the benefit of people at large.

    Mahajan further observed that Digital India campaign launched in July 2015 seeks to ensure that the Government services are made available to people effectively by improving online infrastructure, by increasing internet connectivity and by making the country digitally empowered in the field of technology.

    She hoped that the domain experts in the field would focus on the key components of Digital India Framework, MyGov – Creating Participatory Digital Democracy and Digital Village – connecting Rural India to Digital Services for the Members.

    Mahajan stressed that our Parliament is taking pro-active measures in adopting and applying information technology in its functioning. She said that an e-Portal for Lok Sabha Members was launched on 17 July 2016 to help the Members to discharge their parliamentary works more efficiently. It will be instrumental in minimizing the use of paper and help to convert Lok Sabha into a paperless institution in future, she added.

    Electronics & Information Technology Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad; Minister of State of P P Chaudhary; Bureau of Parliamentary Studies and Training (BPST) Honorary Advisor Raghunandan Sharma and Lok Sabha Secretary-General Anoop Mishra were also present at the inaugural function. The Programme was organized by BPST, Lok Sabha Secretariat in collaboration with the National Institute for Smart Government.

    NEW DELHI: Awards for the most Film Promotion Friendly State/Union territory, tourism promotion and publicity and the best foreign journalist and photographer for India are among the various categories of the National Tourism Awards to be presented this month.

    The awards for 2014-15 will be given away by Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan on 30 July 2016 at a function organized by the Tourism Ministry in the presence of Minister Mahesh Sharma.

    The awards in Tourism Promotion and Publicity include Excellence in Publishing; Best Tourism Film; Best Tourism Promotion Publicity Material (produced by State/Union Territories and Private Stakeholders); and Most Innovative use of Information Technology – Social Media/ Mobile Apps.

    An award for best film friendly state was introduced in the National Film Awards this year and was presented to Gujarat for 2015.

    The Ministry annually presents National Tourism Awards to various segments of the travel, tourism and hospitality industry. These awards are presented to State Governments / Union Territories, classified hotels, heritage hotels, approved travel agents, tour operators and tourist transport operators, individuals and other private organizations in recognition of their performance in their respective fields and also to encourage healthy competition with an aim to promote tourism. The National Tourism Awards have over the years emerged as a prestigious recognition of achievements in the travel, tourism and hospitality sectors.

    Other categories include awards for Comprehensive Development of Tourism; Best Civic Management of a Tourist Destination in India and in various categories for travel agents or tour operators, apart from awards for hotels in different categories and states and private entrepreneurs for various initiatives.

    Journalists felicitated at Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Awards

    MUMBAI: The seventh edition of the Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Awards, instituted by The Express Group in memory of its founder was held on 9 September 2014. Lok Sabha speaker Sumitra Mahajan was the chief guest at the function. She presented the awards for outstanding journalist work done in 2011 and 2012. The winners were chosen by an eminent jury from nominations in 15 categories.

     

    Mahajan presented the awards to 59 journalists from broadcast and print media under different categories. The Journalist of the Year for 2012 went to Sreenivasan Jain of NDTV 24X7. CNN-IBN bagged five awards and NDTV 24X7 received three.

     

    From the broadcast segment, Jajati Karan from CNN-IBN and Geeta Datta from News-X won the award for investigative journalism. Smita Nair from CNN-IBN won the award for reporting on politics and government for the year 2011. Vimal Mohan from NDTV India won the award for sports journalism for his report on how lack of facilities stands in the way of Olympics dreams.

     

    Surbhi Khyati of The Indian Express won the award for Investigative Reporting (print) for 2011 for her series exposing the corruption in the National Rural Health Mission in Uttar Pradesh. The Investigative Reporting (print) award for 2012 went to Mehul Srivastava, Andrew Macaskill and Adi Narayan of Bloomberg News for their story on how malnutrition affects India’s children. Nidhi Verma of Reuters won an award for Business and Economic Journalism (print) for her series on Iran’s oil exports to India.

     

    Speaking at the awards, Mahajan said, “The media is considered the fourth pillar of democracy and we expect as much responsibility and transparency from it as from the other three pillars. A free press and a fearless press are in the interests of both society and the nation.”

     

    “In a fast-changing world, journalists must provide the people with information to make them both aware and strong. The dissemination of information is the most powerful tool in strengthening the awareness of people,” she added.

     

    Mahajan also said that the parliamentary proceedings were not always given adequate coverage and had observed on several occasions, high level and important debates were not highlighted by the media. In fact, at times, the reporting, she said, was distorted. “I laud the media for highlighting issues of corruption and nepotism but along with this I want that the media should also focus on interesting and important debates that take place in Parliament. If the media does not give this adequate coverage then we can’t reap the benefits of democracy,” she said.

     

    The Indian Express Group chairman Viveck Goenka said, “2011 and 2012, for which the awards were being given, were pivotal years for the country which saw the birth of an anti-corruption movement, its steady evolution and often devolution into a political party.”

     

    Goenka stressed the importance of institutions in facilitating good journalism. “In our frantic count of how many followers we have on social media and amid the pressure to collapse an argument into 20 seconds we tend to forget that good journalism needs a good ecosystem of individuals and institutions,” he added.

     

    The awards pay tribute to journalists from print and broadcast who maintain the highest standards of their profession even in the face of political and economic pressures, who produce work that underline the values of good journalism — excellence and enterprise, courage and fairness.
