  • ‘Kasaav’ best film, UP most movie-friendly state in National Film Awards

    NEW DELHI: While the Marathi film ‘Kasaav’ by Sumitra Bhave & Sunil Sukthankar has been named the best feature film in the 64th National Film awards, actor Akshay Kumar for ‘the Hindi film ‘Rustom’ and Surabhi C M for the Malayalam film ‘Minnaminungu–the Firefly’ have won the top awards for acting.

    Rajesh Mapuskar for the Marathi film ‘Ventilator’ has been named best director in the Awards for 2016 announced at a press meet today. The state of Uttar Pradesh has been named as the Most Film Friendly state and Jharkhand gets a special mention in this category which was announced for the first time last year.

    ‘Fireflies in the Abyss’ by Chandrashekhar Roy got the best non-feature film award, while G. Dhananjayan was named best film critic and ‘Lata: Sur Gatha’ by Yatindra Mishra was given best book on cinema award.

    The Nargis Dutt Award for Best Feature Film on National Integration has gone to the Assamese ‘Dikchow Banat Palaax’ by Sanjib Sabha Panditm while the Indira Gandhi Award for Best Debut Film of a Director goes to the Bengali ‘Alifa’ by Deep Choudhury.

    ‘Dhanak; in Hindi by the renowned Nagesh Kukunoor gets the best Children’s film award while the Hindi ‘Mahayodha Rama’ by Rohit Vaid has been named the best Animation film.

    ‘Loktak Lairembee; in Manipuri by Haoban Paban Kumar is the best Environment Conservation / Preservation film; and the Hindi film ‘Pink’ starring megastar Amitabh Bachchan and directed by Anniruddha Roy Chowdhury is the best film on social issues.

    Before the announcement of the awards, the Feature Film Central panel Chairperson and eminent filmmaker Priyadarshan, Non–Feature Film Jury Chairperson Raju Mishra and best Writing on cinema jury head Bhawana Somaaya along with Most Film Friendly State award chairman and Telugu director Radha Krishna Jagarlamudi presented their awards to Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Rajyavardhan Rathore. They had presented the awards to Minister M Venkaiah Naidu yesterday.

    The National Film Awards would be presented by President Pranab Mukherjee on 3 May which is the day on which the first-ever indigenous feature ‘Raja Harishchandra’ by D G Phalke was released in 1913.

    In feature films, the highest number of awards went to Hindi (11) followed by Marathi (9); Malayalam (7); Tamil (5); Telugu, Bengali and Kannada (4 each); Assamese (3), and one each to Gujarati, Konkani and Manipuri. One award each also went to two languages not in Schedule VIII of the Constitution: Moran and Tulu.

    The Best Female Playback Singer award went to Iman Chakraborty for the Bengali film ‘Praktan’ for the song ‘Tumi Jaake Bhalo Basho; and Sundharayyar was named best Male Playback Singer in the Tamil film ‘Joker’ for the song ‘Jasmine E’.

    The best music direction award went to Bapu Padmanabha for the Kannada film ‘Allamma’. The best lyrics awards went to Vairamuthu and Anupama Roy for the song Entha Pakkam in ‘Dharma Durai’ (Tamil) and ‘Tumi Jaake Bhalo Basho’ in ‘Praktan’ (Bengali) respectively.

    The best supporting female and male actor awards went to Zaira Wasim for the Hindi film ‘Dangal’ and Manoj Joshi for the Marathi film ‘Dashakriya’.

    The special mentions went to Sonam Kapoor for her hijack drama film ‘Neerja’ (Hindi), ‘Kadvi Hawa’ (Hindi) to producer Eleeanora Images Private Ltd and director Nila Madhab Panda, ‘Mukti Bhawan’ (Hindi) for producer Red Carper Moving Pictures and director Shubhashish Bhutiani; and actor Adil Hussain for two films: ‘Mukti Bhawan’ and ‘Maj Rati Keteki’.

    The best child artist award was shared by Adish Praveen, Nur Islam and Samiul Alam; and K Manohara for the films ‘Kunju Daivam’ (Malayalam); ‘Sahaj Pather Gappo; (Bengali); and ‘Railway Children’ (Kannada) respectively.

    Several National Award winners slated for screening in New York

    NEW DELHI: Anurag Kashyap’s highly lauded film ‘Ugly’ will open the fourteeth New York Indian Film Festival taking place next month.

     

    Slated from 5 to 10 May, the festival will screen a mix of 23 narrative features and 11 documentaries. The festival is curated by Aseem Chabbra, a senior Indian journalist based in the US.

     

    Geethu Mohandas’ Liar’s Dice which recently won two National Film Awards will be the centerpiece film. The closing film is the renowned Aparna Sen’s Goynar Baksho.

     

    The festival will also present a retrospective of British-based Gurinder Chaddha’s documentaries.

     

    Kamal Swaroop’s documentary about Dada Saheb Phalke’s life in Varanasi, Rangbhoomi made for the Films Division which won the best non-feature National Award for 2013 is also being screened.

     

    Delhi-based scribe turned filmmaker Utpal Borpujari will present his documentary on Naga folk music, Songs of the Blue Hills.

     

    Karan Bali’s 80 minute documentary, An American in Madras, based on American-born filmmaker Ellis R Dungan’s travails in the Tamil film industry will get a screening alongside the recently released Gulabi Gang by Nishtha Jain.

     

    Nagraj Manjule’s Fandry and Sumitra Bhave and Sunil Sukthankar’s Astu which also won two National Awards each and Gajendra Ahire’s Postcard are three Marathi features to be screened at the festival. Assamese feature As The River Flows (Ekhon Nodir Xipare) by Bidyut Kotoky, will also be screened.

     

    Sumanta Ghosal’s The Unseen Sequence, a documentary exploring the dance form of Bharatnatyam through the art of Malvika Sarukkai, and Jaideep Varma’s documentary on Indian stand-up comedy, I Am Offended will also be screened along with Neela Venkataraman’s Sound Check documentary on music.

     

    Nagesh Kukunoor’s Lakshmi, the winner of Toronto Reel Film Festival and Amit Masurkar’s Sulemani Keeda, Buddhadeb Dasgupta’s Nawaazuddin starrer Anwar Ka Ajab Kissa and, are also slated for screening.

    MUMBAI: When actor Akshay Kumar teamed up with Ashvini Yardi to form the production house Grazing Goat Pictures, nobody had thought he would get such a good response. After taking the world by storm with their first Bollywood Film Production Oh My God (OMG), the two have embarked on a journey of creating milestones in the entertainment industry with their regional ventures, 72 Miles Ek Pravas, a critically acclaimed Marathi regional film, and Bhaji in Problem, a Punjabi regional film which has garnered admiration internationally.

     

    72 Miles Ek Pravas was the duo’s debut into regional films and has received positive feedback from international audiences when it was shortlisted at the celebrated London Indian Film Festival. Grazing Goat Pictures has now etched another feather in its hat with the film having its second reputable screening at the illustrious 12th Pune International Film Festival (PIFF).

     

    Of the 500 entries in the international feature competition section for PIFF, 14 films have been shortlisted. Out of 35 entries in the Marathi feature competition, only seven movies have been selected, one of which being 72 Miles Ek Pravas, alongside national award-winning filmmaker Nagraj Manjule’s Fandry, Aditya Sarpotdar’s Narbachiwadi – produced by Film Farm, Laxman Utekar’s Tapaal, Sumitra Bhave and Sunil Sukhtankar’s Astu, and Rege by Abhijit Panse.

     

    Other categories at the festival include, World Competition, Animation, Live Action, Global Cinema 73, Country Focus, Retrospective, Indian Cinema Today, Legends We Remember, Tribute, Special Screening: NFDC and Gems from NFAI.

    Amol Palekar to head CMS Vatavaran Environment Filmfest Jury

    NEW DELHI: Eminent actor, director and producer Amol Palekar will head the jury for the coveted 7th CMS Vatavaran Awards in national and international categories.

     

    The Award Jury is meeting from today for three days at the ITC Maurya, New Delhi.

     

    The jury comprises 14 eminent personalities from widely divergent sectors and streams, that is filmmaking, conservation, research and media will be headed by Amol Palekar

     

    The jury members include World Bank New Delhi senior environmental specialist, Dr Anupam Joshi; Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts (IGNCA) member secretary (Chief Executive Officer) Dipali Khanna; author, columnist, birder Ranjit Lal; filmmaker, Vichitra Nirmiti, Pune Sumitra Bhave; film critic and senior columnist The Indian Express Shubhra Gupta; The Hindu, New Delhi features editor Ziya Us Salam.

     

    CMS Vatavaran received a total of 541 entries out of which 86 Indian and International films have been nominated in 11 categories. The Awards will be conferred on 2 February 2014 during the 7th CMS VATAVARAN 2014 International Environment & Wildlife Film Festival and Forum which is scheduled from 30 January to 3 February 2014 at IGNCA Lawns, New Delhi.

     

    Vatavaran is India’s only International Environment & Wildlife Film Festival and Forum organised as initiative of Centre for Media Studies, New Delhi. The festival is not just a film festival celebrating the cinematic art of films but focuses more on using the films as a tool and catalyst for creating impact. The festival has an International recognition and till date 39 festivals have been organised in 26 cities of India ever since its maiden run in 2002.

    National award winning film ‘Samhita-The Script to release on 11 Oct

    Marathi film ‘Samhita- The Script’ which is directed by noted director duo Sumitra Bhave and Sunil Sukthankar has created a record of sorts by winning two national awards and 20 other awards .

     

    The national award winning film is slated to release in all over Maharashtra on 11 October.  Samhita is produced by Subhash Ghai’s Mukta Artsin collaboration with Ashok Movies and Sumitra Bhave and Sunil Sukthankar’s film production company Vichitra Nirmiti and is presented by Subhash Ghai.

    The film is about Revati, a national award winning filmmaker, played by Devika Dafatardar who has visualised a screenplay set in the era of British Raj. The story of the film revolves around a king, a queen and a court singer. It is the story of love, detachment, surrender and passion.  

     

    Music composer Shailendra Barve won the national award for best music direction and the award for best playback singing was bagged by song Palke Na Modo rendered by Aarti Ankalikar- Tikekar at the 60th national awards.

    The director duo of the ‘Samhita-The Script’, Sumitra Bhave and Sunil Sukthankar have twelve films, more than forty short films, five telefilms and a television soap to their credit. They have won many international as well national awards.

    Bhaagerathi and Bharat Mazza Desh Ahe to premiere at IFFI

    MUMBAI: Dr. Baraguru Ramchandrappa‘s Bhageerathi and Bharat Mazza Desh Aahe, directed by Sumitra Bhave and Sunil Sukthankar, will screen under the Indian Premiere section at the 42nd International Film Festival of India, Goa 2011.


    Bhageerathi, featuring Srinath Bhavana, Kishor and Hema Chowudri, is based on a Kannada folk ballad Kerege Haara (A Sacrifice for a tank).


    Bharat Mazza Desh Aahe (India is my Country), featuring Vikram Gokhale, Uttara Baokar, Renuka Daftardar, Jitendra Joshi, Devika Daftardar, Omkar Govardhan, Alok Rajwade, Kishor Kadam and Deepa Shriram, depicts the story of a family dealing with value problems amongst themselves and simultaneously experiencing the everyday corruption in their social life.
