    Warner Bros. taps Sony’s Loren Schwartz as EVP genre marketing

    MUMBAI: Veteran marketing executive Loren Schwartz has been named Warner Bros. Pictures’ new executive vice president, genre marketing and creative advertising.

     

    In his new post, Schwartz will report directly to Warner Bros. Pictures executive vice president of marketing Blair Rich, in addition to Warner Bros. Pictures president of worldwide marketing and international distribution Sue Kroll.

     

    Kroll said, “Loren is among the industry’s most respected and knowledgeable executives, who has broken new ground in all facets of genre marketing.  His expertise will be integral to our outreach on a range of niche projects, encompassing everything from horror to urban to faith-based.”

     

    Rich added, “We look forward to working with Loren in our global efforts to market our genre films—an important part of our extensive and diverse slate—and to capture the attention of an ever-changing and ever-widening audience.”

     

    Schwartz, who has more than two decades of success in film entertainment marketing, comes to Warner Bros. from Sony, where he most recently had the title of executive vice president of marketing for their Screen Gems division.  During his tenure, he created campaigns for films like Sam Raimi’s Evil DeadResident Evil,Heaven is for Real, Think Like a Man and The Vow.

     

    He had previously served as senior vice president of creative advertising at Columbia Pictures, where he worked on more than 60 films, including Superbad, Pineapple Express, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Anger Management and 50 First Dates, to name only a few.

     

    Schwartz started his career in 1993 at Trimark Pictures, working on both theatrical and home video titles, the most notable being the cautionary tale Swimming with Sharks.  In 1996, he joined Fox’s indie label, Searchlight Pictures, as manager of advertising and was involved in the campaigns for such successes as Stealing Beauty and The Full Monty.

     

    The following year, he moved over to Sony Pictures, starting as manager of creative advertising and rapidly moving up the ranks to his most recent post.

    Jesse Eisenberg and Jeremy Irons to act in the upcoming Superman-Batman film

    MUMBAI: Warner Bros. Pictures announced today in an official press release that, Jesse Eisenberg has been set to star as Lex Luthor and Jeremy Irons will play Alfred in the upcoming Zack Snyder untitled Superman/Batman film. The dual announcement was made today by Greg Silverman, President, Creative Development and Worldwide Production, and Sue Kroll, President, Worldwide Marketing and International Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures.

     

    In the official press release, Snyder stated, “Lex Luthor is often considered the most notorious of Superman’s rivals, his unsavory reputation preceding him since 1940. What’s great about Lex is that he exists beyond the confines of the stereotypical nefarious villain. He’s a complicated and sophisticated character whose intellect, wealth and prominence position him as one of the few mortals able to challenge the incredible might of Superman. Having Jesse in the role allows us to explore that interesting dynamic, and also take the character in some new and unexpected directions.”

     

    The director further added in the release, “As everyone knows, Alfred is Bruce Wayne’s most trusted friend, ally and mentor, a noble guardian and father figure. He is an absolutely critical element in the intricate infrastructure that allows Bruce Wayne to transform himself into Batman. It is an honor to have such an amazingly seasoned and gifted actor as Jeremy taking on the important role of the man who mentors and guides the guarded and nearly impervious façade that encapsulates Bruce Wayne.”

     

    Eisenberg has received Academy Award, Golden Globe Award, Screen Actors Guild Award and BAFTA Award nominations for his starring role as Mark Zuckerberg in David Fincher’s The Social Network. He also starred in Woody Allen’s To Rome with Love and Louis Letterier’s Now You See Me. He will next be seen in The Double and Night Moves.

     

    Irons won the Academy Award for his portrayal of Claus von Bülow in Reversal of Fortune. His work in the film also garnered him a Golden Globe Award. He won an Emmy Award and a Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Award for his performance in the TV miniseries Elizabeth I, opposite Helen Mirren, and recently starred on the small screen as Rodrigo Borgia in Neil Jordan’s highly acclaimed Showtime series The Borgias, for which Irons earned a Golden Globe nomination. He was recently nominated for a SAG Award for the PBS Great Performances television miniseries The Hollow Crown, for his performance as Henry IV.

     

    Snyder’s film stars Henry Cavill, reprising his role as Superman/Clark Kent, Ben Affleck as Batman/Bruce Wayne, and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman/Diana Prince. The film also reunites Man of Steel stars Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane.

     

    The new film is currently being written by Chris Terrio (Argo), from a screenplay by David S. Goyer (Da Vinci’s Demons). Charles Roven (The Dark Knight) and Deborah Snyder (300, Suckerpunch) are producing, with Benjamin Melniker (Constantine), Michael E. Uslan (The Spirit), Wesley Coller (Watchmen), David S. Goyer and Geoff Johns (Smallville, Arrow) serving as executive producers.

     

    The film is set to open worldwide on May 6, 2016, and is based on Superman characters created by Jerry Siegel & Joe Shuster, Batman characters created by Bob Kane, and Wonder Woman created by William Moulton Marston, appearing in comic books published by DC Entertainment.

    Harry Potter film crosses $1 billion mark

     MUMBAI: The last of Harry Potter films, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 has crossed the $1 billion mark globally at the end of the first week.


    The latest Potter film has earned $640.2 million worldwide. While the film has grossed $214.9 million domestically, it raked in an additional $425.3 million at the international box office, it is understood.


    The terrific opening of the film also pushed Warners‘ domestic box office take for 2011 to over $1 billion for the eleventh consecutive year.
     
    Commented Warner Bros president of worldwide marketing Sue Kroll, “Each film has inspired us creatively, and it has been exciting to watch the evolution through eight remarkable movies. It has truly been the movie event of a generation, as Harry Potter fans who were there from the beginning have been joined by new fans over the years, and their enthusiasm, as well as our own has never waned.”


    Even before the latest movie opened, the Potter franchise was already the highest-grossing franchise of all time beating out both the Star Wars and James Bond films, a status it has held since the sixth film Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince that released in 2009.


    Individually, the worldwide grosses for the previous films are: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer‘s Stone, $974,755,371; Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, $878,979,634; Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, $796,688,549; Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, $896,911,078; Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, $939,885,929; Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, $934,416,487; and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1, $955,417,476.
