  • FM ignores entertainment sector in budget

FM ignores entertainment sector in budget

NEW DELHI / MUMBAI: It was the royal ignore for the second year in a row for the entertainment sector. Finance minister P Chidambaram, while presenting Union Budget 2005-2006 in Parliament today, had practically nothing to offer the industry.

The only mention made in the budget to the media sector as a whole was the announcement of reduction in customs duty for printing press equipment.

The Finance Minister announced that credit for counterveiling duty (CVD) will be available against payment of excise duty. However, IT software is proposed to be exempt from the proposed CVD.

Noting that the services sector accounts for about 52 per cent of the GDP, the FM expressed the necessity to cast the net wide and to include some additional services in the service tax net, while retaining the 10 per cent service tax limit.

This means that cable ops and the cable industry would continue to be taxed, which, of course, is being passed on to consumers.

However, as a relief to small service providers, Chidambaram proposed to exempt from service tax those service providers whose gross turnover does not exceed Rs 400,000 per year.

    Multiplexes under service tax net

One area where the budget has dealt a negative blow is to the booming multiplex industry (in which players like Zee Telefilms, Adlabs and Shringar two name just three are major players). Multiplexes have been brought under the service tax net.

Says E-City (Zee Group CMD Subhash Chandra’s multiplex intitiative) CEO Atul Goel, “The multiplex business will be adversely affected as construction activities have comer under the service tax ambit. Besides, we had sought certain concessions, which the budget is silent about.”

A visibly disappointed Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Ficci) additional director entertainment Siddhatha Dasgupta commented, “While all the other other sectors have got something or the other, the budget has nothing to offer the entertainment industry.”

  • Zee ups consumer push for Dish TV

Zee ups consumer push for Dish TV

NEW DELHI: Sensing that the Tata-Star combine, which got a green signal last week from the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB), for a joint venture company, is all set to up gears as far as its direct-to-home (DTH) venture is concerned, Dish TV too is attempting to smoothen out the rough edges. Especially those related to marketing.

Dish TV is the brand name under which Subhash Chandras companies, ASC Enterprises and Zee Telefilms, are implementing the countrys first KU-band DTH service.According to Zee Tele vice-chairman Jawahar Goel, a new initiative relating to DTH distributors, aimed at facilitating easy accessibility for consumers, is being planned soon. “The distributor locator scheme through SMS (over mobile telephony) would be put in place within a few days so that consumers interested in the DTH service would find it easier to know more about the service,” he added.

Under the new scheme, any person can send an SMS to a re-designated number, which would be heavily advertised by Dish TV, giving his/her area of residence or wherever the DTH hardware is to be installed. A reply would be generated wherein the details of a distributor nearest to the senders location would be provided.

Alternately, a prospective DTH consumer can go to ASC Enterprises and/or Zee Telefilms sites to locate a Dish TV distributor in his/her city of choice.

This move has been initiated, Goel pointed out, as the feedback has been that people have been finding it difficult to locate distributors for the DTH service.

Dish TV is also looking at increasing the number of channels being offered to consumers, which would go up to 100 from the existing 48-odd at present, including new inductees in the form of ESPN and Star Sports.

Quite a few of the probable new channels have been tied up, while work is continuing on others, Goel said.

In this connection, it is learnt that ASC Enterprises group president and CEO Punit Goenka is scheduled to visit Cannes in France for the MIP TV event, with an aim to do some content shopping.

Meanwhile, Dish TV logo too has undergone a change and the new avatar can be seen on leaflets being distributed currently by the company.

Asked about the reason behind the new logo, Goel said that internally people wanted some changes and so it was done.

  • India ‘interesting’ DTH market: News Corp COO Chernin; defends move to instal James Murdoch as BSkyB CEO

CANNES: News Corp president and chief operating officer supported and defended the group’s proposal to put Star Asia boss James Murdoch at the helm at BSkyB today.
This apart, he also hurled a warning at the British Broadcasting Corp which has broken away from the BSkyB platform and has decrypted, making some of its content – sourced from Fox – available free to viewers. Additionally, he also pointed out that News Corp found India an interesting DTH market, and that the group would not be making heavy investments in Bollywood, or in print.
Speaking to a select band of journalists at the Carlton on the Croisette in Cannes during MipCom a short while ago, he said: “I’d like to see him as CEO of BSkyB. But I guess he will have to go through the process. The nominating committee. We figure it will be all right.”
He pointed out that it was indeed ironic that such a ruckus was being raised about the younger Murdoch’s candidature. “There’s a fair bit of noise now. But let everyone remember: News Corp will not put in an inferior candidate. Sobreriety is needed.”
Referring to the BBC, Chernin said he did not think the British pubcaster was right to launch unencrypted in the UK. “BBC should be concerned about content, they are such a strong content creator themselves. Their moves are very short sighted. We are not happy at all. In fact, we were shocked. We will investigate every possibility to stop this. Issue an injunction, stop selling shows. Remember we have a long standing relationship with the BBC. They have been buying a lot of our shows, The Simpsons, etc.”
Chernin also sounded irritated when informed about Zee TV chairman Subhash Chandra’s foray into DTH (Zee’s Dish TV soft-launched on 2 October). “Who says Zee TV has launched DTH? There have been announcements, but where is it?” he asked. When told that it was a soft launch he said, “I don’t see it going into hard launch very soon.”
For us, India is among the more attractive DTH markets in the world. “It is amongst the fastest growing pay TV markets,” he pointed out. “We would like to be there. We are happy about our Star Asia operations, both in India and China. More particularly India because it is making profits and contributes revenues,” he added.
That should be music to Star India CEO Peter Mukerjea and COO Sameer Nair’s ears.

  • ‘Karvachauth’ is Balaji’s new venture for Zee

MUMBAI: I ts ‘K’ time on Zee again.
Balaji Telefilms is back on Zee, albeit little more cautiously. Besides launching two new shows on Star Plus Karma and Kahin To Hoga, the production house also plans to launch a new show titled Karvachauth on Zee.
With the earlier ventures like Koi Apna Sa, Kitney Kool Hai Hum and Kammal fading away from the scene unnoticed, it appeared as though the production house had been written off by Zee.
Queried about the soap factory’s plans, Balaji Telefilms COO Rajesh Pavithran said, “The programme is scheduled to air in the month of August. Karvachauth is going to be a prime-time weekly.” He however, refused to talk about the plot line, saying the story was still in process of being finalised.
When asked about the characters he offered that the show would be a good mix of Balaji veterans as well as some new actors. According to the Balaji tradition, it is likely that the protagonist should be a new entrant to the television media.
The recent ventures on Subhash Chandra’s flagship channel may not have set the TRPs soaring but it was on Zee where Balaji Telefilms first tasted success with its sitcom Hum Paanch. While Zee officials did not offer any comment, Pavitran insisted that the the show was a done deal.
What has been confirmed by the channel, though is the launch of the long pending action thriller XYZ to spruce up its Sunday morning slot, from 13 July. The Shekhar Suman starrer directorial venture of Anant Mahadevan has been in the pipeline since last year.
Meanwhile, with the first series of the Chausath Panne wrapping up, the channel will be launching the second edition titled Manasa on 20 July.
