    Microsoft’s Mark Penn forms ad-marketing investment firm, raises $250 million

    MUMBAI: In a top level shake-up at Bill Gates’ Microsoft, the company’s executive vice president Mark Penn has quit to form an investment advisory company called The Stagwell Group LLC, which will invest in advertising, research, data analytics, public relations, and digital marketing services. 

     

    The Stagwell Group has closed on $250 million in investment capital and may use leverage to make up to $750 million in acquisitions.

     

    Erstwhile Microsoft CEO and current owner of professional American basketball team Los Angeles Clippers Steve Ballmer is a core investor in the company.

     

    “I believe in the ability to invest, grow and even shake up firms in the marketing industries,” Ballmer said.

     

    “With Steve’s support and my experience in politics, marketing and technology, I will seek out investments in the exploding digital marketing arena. From finding soccer moms to uncovering Microtrends. I have always believed that data and creativity have to go together and that creative talent needs to be nurtured. We will be looking for investments that understand those principles,” Penn said.

     

    “I think now is the time to bring together new kinds of marketing companies into a more dynamic environment – one where entrepreneurs can really thrive,” Penn added. 

     

    Penn has been in research, advertising, public relations, polling and consulting for nearly 40 years. For the past three years, he has served in senior executive positions at Microsoft, where as an executive vice president he has been responsible for working on core strategic issues across Microsoft’s products, value propositions, and investments and leading the company’s competitive research and analysis. He will be transitioning from Microsoft to The Stagwell Group by September.

     

    Penn’s experience in growing, building and managing agencies is well-documented. As the co-founder and CEO of Penn Schoen Berland, a market research firm that he built and sold to WPP, he demonstrated value creation in a crowded industry serving clients with innovative techniques from being first with overnight polling to unique ad testing methods used by presidents and major corporations. At WPP, he also became CEO of Burson Marsteller, and managed the two companies to record profit growth during that period.

     

    Penn is also known as the creator behind well-known campaigns and ads, including the 3 am ad, Tony Blair’s “forward not back” campaign and led the team on Microsoft’s hugely successful 2014 Super Bowl ad when he headed advertising there. He has been a senior adviser to global corporate and political leaders including Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer, Bill Ford, U.K. Prime Minister Tony Blair, Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton and President Bill Clinton. He has worked globally in over 25 countries for their leaders. Penn is the author of Microtrends: the Small Forces Behind Tomorrow’s Big Changes (2009).

     

    The firm is not currently accepting new investors.

    BANGALORE: Microsoft’s India Development Center (MIDC) today announced their involvement in an end-to-end project to develop ‘Microsoft Office Communicator Mobile’ – a unified communications client that provides information workers with a premier mobile collaboration experience through native integration of mobile applications with enterprise-grade, real-time communications tools.

    Communicator Mobile will extend features of Microsoft Office Live Communications Server 2005 and Microsoft Office Communicator to the Windows Mobile 2003 SE and Windows Mobile 5.0 platform, both Pocket PC Edition and Smartphone, the company said in an official release.

    The development process included getting feedback from usage within Microsoft, Beta users outside Microsoft, and TAP (Technology Adoption Program) partners. The suggestions and feedback from user groups were incorporated into the product in the early stages of the development cycle, the release adds.

    Recently unveiled during Steve Ballmer’s keynote at 3GSM in Barcelona Spain and based on the user interface of the Microsoft Office Communicator 2005 desktop client, the client goes beyond simple voice services, incorporating connected communication modes such as more secure instant messaging (IM), presence awareness and integrated VoIP-telephony.

    Commenting on the product being completely developed out of India, MIDC VP & MD Srini Koppulu said, “Our India Development Center plays an important role in contributing to future innovations at Microsoft and we are proud to be at the core of Microsoft’s global development initiatives. The release of Communicator Mobile is an endorsement of Microsoft’s mission to “innovate, energize, and support Microsoft investments for the mobile user experience.”

    Communicator Mobile client increases potential data revenue for mobile operators by driving demand for business-class devices with an enterprise-grade client, adding rich, real-time collaboration capabilities to mobile data networks, the company claimed in the statement.

    Microsoft to power Deutsche Telekom’s IPTV initiative

    MUMBAI: Deutsche Telekom has reached agreement with Microsoft on an alliance to deliver Internet Protocol television (IPTV) services to consumers across Germany. The deal will enable Deutsche Telekom to deliver next-generation television, as well as complementary interactive services and a range of entertainment products over its VDSL broadband networks.

    Deutsche Telekom will use the Microsoft TV IPTV Edition software platform to offer these services. Microsoft will support Deutsche Telekom with joint marketing, in addition to marketing by Deutsche Telekom, to help develop IPTV in Germany. The agreement reached with Deutsche Telekom is Microsoft’s largest IPTV contract in Europe to date and its second largest worldwide.

    The move marks the biggest European contract Microsoft TV has signed, and the second largest after one with AT&T in the United States, the software behemoth said.

    “Today’s announcement represents Microsoft’s largest IPTV agreement in Europe to date and is a very significant milestone in our long-standing relationship with Deutsche Telekom,” said Steve Ballmer, chief executive officer of Microsoft.

    The platform will enable customers to receive regular TV programs as well as advanced television services including standard- and high-definition programs, interactive TV, digital video recording and video on demand. An onDemand Collections feature will allow viewers to access appealing content packages including selected feature films, TV series or documentaries at the touch of a button.

    IPTV services will be delivered through the new VDSL network, which is currently being extended by T-Com. This network is expected to permit bandwidth of up to 50 Mbit/s and is planned for launch starting mid-2006 in 10 major German cities including Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne and Munich.

    “In recent months, the experts at T-Online have run the Microsoft TV platform through extensive tests, and we are convinced that we will be able to offer excellent-quality IPTV services that will expand as we need them to,” said Kai-Uwe Ricke, chairman of the Deutsche Telekom board. “IPTV delivered via VDSL will enable better, more service-oriented, more interactive and, above all, more customized television. With this advanced television service, Deutsche Telekom and Microsoft are writing another chapter in our longstanding cooperation, tapping new markets and together exploring exciting new growth opportunities.”

    The Microsoft TV IPTV Edition software platform will enable Deutsche Telekom to offer its customers a better television experience, including a wide range of special-interest channels and compelling pay-TV programs, both live and on demand. Integrated personal video recorder functionality will enable viewers to “time shift” programs at their convenience, pausing live shows or recording them to enjoy later, a statement released by the two partners claims.
