    Al-Jazeera International ropes in Stephen Cole

    MUMBAI: BBC’s well-known anchor Stephen Cole will be joining the Middle Eastern television company Al-Jazeera for its forthcoming English-language news and current affairs channel — Al-Jazeera International. Stephen Cole will anchor from the London broadcast centre.

    Cole was associated with BBC News 24 and BBC World as senior anchor. He also hosted the BBC’s Click Online programme, 6 O’Clock and Ten O’Clock bulletins. He was previously associated with Sky News, CNN, and ITN. Earlier this year, Al-Jazeera International had roped in television host, author and producer Sir David Frost and also CNN’s Riz Khan.

    Cole will be Al Jazeera International’s main male news anchor in their London news broadcast centre, one of the channel’s four regional broadcast centres – the others are in Doha, Kuala Lumpur, and Washington DC.

    Al Jazeera International’s London bureau chief, Sue Phillips said, “I am delighted that Stephen is joining the team here in London. He brings a wealth of international broadcasting experience and will help us to offer viewers around the world a fresh perspective on global news.”

    Stephen was recently elected to The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) and will be hosting the Royal Television Society Technology Awards on December 8th. He has written and presented the Oscars Special Show for BBC World and BBC News 24 for the past five years.

  • BBC World to cover Annual Global Wireless Business

    NEW DELHI: For the second year running, BBC World is the official TV partner for the 3G World Congress 2003, the eighth Annual Global Wireless Business event taking place from 3-7 November in Bangkok.
    At this year’s conference, the team from BBC World’s Click Online aired on Saturday 1:00 pm, Mondays at 10:00pm, Tuesday 2:00 pm, and Wednesdays at 7:00 pm- the award-winning technology series hosted by Stephen Cole – will be present to interview keynote speakers, and to assess the mood from other delegates on the progress of 3G to date.
    In addition, there will be an opportunity for delegates to view the daily 3G reports from the channel’s Asia Business Report as BBC World is broadcast on internal televisions throughout key areas of the conference, according to an official statement from the BCC World.
    Simon Page, airtime sales account director for BBC World in North Asia in a statement said, “This is Asia’s biggest mobile gathering, and a must attend event for business and technology leaders from around the world. The 3G 
    World Congress represents an excellent opportunity for BBC World, as the official TV partner, to raise awareness of the profile and reputation of the channel and technology coverage”.

    ‘Click Online’ examines tech advancements in the East

    On BBC this week, Stephen Cole and the Click Online team ask the question Is the developing world playing technology leapfrog with the West?

    Reporter David Jamies on looks at the mobile phone market in China, one of the fastest growing in the world at the moment and discovers that poor rural workers in rice paddy fields may end up owning mobiles without ever having had a landline at all.

    Click Online also looks at Afghanistan, a war-shattered country that has rapidly restored some of its phone systems using the latest mobile technology. Click Online discusses the technology leapfrog issue in depth with technology journalist, Tim Philips.

    The show will also feature a report from New York correspondent Ian Hardy on how Starbucks is giving customers access to the Internet, without wires. The show also looks at the week's top sites with Sev Bastajian and rounds up top technology news stories across the web.

    The show airs 28 September 12 pm, 29 September at 4 pm, 1 October at 1 pm and 2 October at 7 pm.
