  • Kotwali Police Station in Ludhiana busts illegal STB racket

Kotwali Police Station in Ludhiana busts illegal STB racket

KOLKATA: A store in Ludhiana, PAL Electronics, was raided by Kotwali police station on 16 March, after Sony-appointed raiding agency Mediasoft Legal Solution’s service manager Harminder Singh complained that pay channels of Sony, Star, Zee and other major broadcasters were being sold via unauthorised set-top boxes (Pagaria Boxes) without the proper licence or any distribution agreements.

The store was selling the illegal boxes at Rs 1,500 on the false pretence that the buyer can watch all the leading pay channels like SET, Sony SAB, Star Plus, Zee TV etc without any fee for a period of six months. Once the initial free subscription period would be over, the buyers could recharge it at Rs 200 for another six months, the store informed users.

When the representative of Mediasoft Legal Solutions led by the Sony Pictures Networks Team, along with the Kotwali Police Station raided the store, the team recovered 11 pre-programmed Pagaria STB boxes, which are currently in police custody. The police is investigating the matter and will be filing the FIR today.

These illegal boxes work with the help of an internet connection and receive pay channels. These Pagaria STBs are being sold to the subscribers with the aforementioned false promises. Of late, there has been a significant rise in piracy of TV channels causing much concern to broadcasters and large multi-system operators (MSOs).

Naïve users fall prey to this false claim as authentic cable and DTH operators charge around Rs 300 to 350 per month for the popular pay channels. Now with many more such raids in the pipeline by all the leading broadcasters and local MSO’s, it is a matter of time before the TV screens of the users of such illegal STBs are going to go blank suddenly one fine day, with no one to approach for any complaints or servicing. Sony Pictures Networks team has scheduled many raids across Gujarat, Punjab and other states along with other broadcasters.

TV piracy is becoming big business in India where the miscreants are giving access to multiple premium channels at lower costs with the help of emerging technologies. But with regulators now on the heels of this form of piracy, it is only a matter of time before stringent action is taken against all such players.

  • Domestic STB manufactures felt the pinch of Covid since January: Amit Kharbanda

Domestic STB manufactures felt the pinch of Covid since January: Amit Kharbanda

KOLKATA: The Covid2019 pandemic has hurt most businesses in India since the beginning of March. But the set top box (STB) manufacturers felt the pinch of crisis even before that, from January itself, MyBox Technologies managing director Amit Kharbanda said. Although the company ended up having six months of zero sales, it continued R&D in the interim for new products.

Kharbanda explained that there are a decent amount of components that come from China, even for normal electronics products. As China went into shutdown from January, MyBox faced a shortage in components for manufacturing. He added that it has impacted all domestic STB companies.

Furthermore, domestic STB companies have been struggling since ASEAN came into effect a couple of years ago. Big cable and DTH operators that used to buy products from domestic companies, switched to importing from ASEAN. Kharbanda emphasised that the competition in this space is not between Indian STB manufacturers but with the international players. In these challenging circumstances, MyBox has been able to survive as it tends to do R&D all the time whether it is with Google or Amazon, he stated.

While the business environment was already tough for the players, the cash flow went for a toss post-Covid, Kharbanda added. The company had to cut down on its expenses. “Bankers started questioning the business model. It took time to get that issue streamlined and convince them, finding the right way of optimising the funding and everything. Now as all of that has been settled, we are hoping from this month onwards or next month we should start shipping. At the end of this year, we should at least come back closer to our quantities which we were shipping last year,” he said. MyBox sold 40 crore boxes in FY20.

However, he mentioned that they kept up R&D during the lockdown. Some product launches including the android box, Alexa Solution have been delayed but the company has added new features during the period. Now as the business is opening up, it will release those products one by one.

“We have been working on some very interesting solutions. One of these was the Android OTT box which we have tried to make valuable for ISPs. There are a lot of small ISPs in India. They can actually utilise the OTT box and give it as a package to their consumers. There is good ARPU source they can make on,” Kharbanda added.

Talking about overall opportunities for STB manufacturers, Kharbanda said that India still has millions of TV unpenetrated households. Moreover, there is scope for old box replacements and new hybrid boxes. Even post-Covid, there has been a major demand for TV sets. But it does not translate into a huge benefit for domestic STB manufacturers as the large operators buy from international players, he rued.

Although the large DTH operators recently undertook ‘Make in India’ route for STB production, the move is more directed at getting foreign vendors here to assemble and sell rather than buying products from homegrown manufactures. However, he shared that MyBox is working closely with the government of India to push STB manufacturing here. Moreover, the ministry of commerce is also working on the issue and the ministry of information and broadcasting (MIB) is in talks with operators for boosting domestic manufacturing. Kharbanda is optimistic that these endeavours will give a much-needed nudge to the growth of STB manufacturers in India.

  • Skyworth and 3SS partner to create Netflix-ready platform

Skyworth and 3SS partner to create Netflix-ready platform

KOLKATA: 3 Screen Solutions (3SS), a leading provider of software solutions for set top boxes (STB) and multiscreen entertainment, and Skyworth Digital, leading manufacturer of connected home products and solutions, announced that they have integrated their technologies to create a new STB platform optimized to enable faster android TV service launches with world-class viewing experiences.

The Skyworth HP40A STB (with embedded Amlogic chipset) and middleware are now pre-integrated with 3SS’ 3READY Custom Launcher to create a powerful end-to-end android TV solution.

The partners’ fundamental aims for this pre-integration are to help operators more rapidly and easily secure Netflix certification and to smooth the journey to becoming a super-aggregator.

Skyworth is a leading partner in the Netflix Scaling Program, which Netflix created to help OEMs (original equipment manufacturer) including STB providers to obtain technical pre-certification. By choosing Netflix-ready hardware, an operator’s Netflix certification can be fast-tracked, and the process of reaching commercial agreement with Netflix can potentially be eased. With these Netflix compliance elements in place early, operators have the opportunity to accelerate the introduction of their new android TV services to the marketplace.

In parallel, as part of multiple android TV deployments, 3SS’ 3READY Custom Launcher – at the heart of the 3READY product framework, now driving the UX in more than 10 million homes – has successfully received Netflix UI certification.

“With Skyworth’s and 3SS’ hardware+middleware+launcher pre-certified platform combination, Netflix, the aspiring operator, and ultimately subscribers, can all be confident of a high-quality experience including Netflix viewing,” commented Srithar Bala, head of Video Solutions & Services, Skyworth Digital.

Furthermore, with 3READY Control Center, the Netflix launch points – namely, the locations within the UX where Netflix is to appear – can be configured to align with the specific terms of the operator’s Netflix agreement. This can further shorten time to market.

Access to Netflix is one of the pre-eminent drivers behind the growing popularity of the android TV solution among service providers, as is the shift to super-aggregation. As the scale of a super-aggregator’s reach grows, however, particular attention and management is needed to ensure that all subscribers get a seamless experience on an ever-increasing population of devices – an assurance and high standard that Netflix strongly insists on.

With the Skyworth+3READY-pre-integrated reference hybrid STB hardware platform, operators can get to certification more quickly, and 3SS’ android TV-centric custom launcher is ready for the operator to tailor and brand for their DVB-S, -T, -C, IPTV and/or OTT services. “With certification by Google, Netflix and other content partners all taken care of even before unboxing, operators can get a significant head-start as they plan and launch their Android TV products,” Bala added.

Skyworth and 3SS are collaborating to deliver a hybrid Android TV project for an as-yet-undisclosed European operator which will launch soon.

“Through pre-integration, by choosing the Skyworth+3SS platform, service providers can benefit from a proven solution and earlier service launches with minimized technical integration cost and risk,” said 3SS managing director Kai-Christian Borchers. “The service launch process is further accelerated by Netflix and other pre-certifications. The result is that operators can differentiate earlier, and start earning revenues faster, with their next-gen Android TV offerings,” he added.

NXTDIGITAL’s revenue grows by 3.4% to Rs.234.82 crore in Q1

KOLKATA: NXTDIGITAL announced its results for the first quarter of the current financial year – a quarter that was significantly impacted by the Covid2019 pandemic. Against this challenging backdrop, the company continued its growth story, with revenues for Q1 standing at Rs. 234.82 crores.

On a consolidated basis, revenues grew by 3.4 per cent on a sequential basis over the previous quarter and 2.7 per cent over the same quarter of the previous year. The company posted an EBIDTA of Rs.50.36 crore for the quarter; posting a growth of 99 per cent on a sequential basis over the previous quarter and 2.6 per cent on a year-on-year basis.

The company has not only been able to maintain its subscriber base but even grow its video and data businesses, in spite of the serious negative sentiments of the pandemic. It has maintained its collection efficiency of over 99.5 per cent under its prepaid collection model.

The board considered  a capital raising exercise in the agenda and has constituted a committee of directors to analyse and explore various options including Preferential Allotment, Rights Issue or such other means as the Board may consider appropriate for an amount up to Rs.500 crore.

    Performance Drivers

NXTDIGITAL launched a series of key initiatives during Q1 to counter the challenges of the pandemic, while ensuring the safety of all its personnel, its franchisees and other ecosystem partners. The company looked to focus on three key aspects during the difficult quarter.

Accelerated “digital payment” adoption by subscribers – the company worked actively to ensure nation-wide adoption of “digital” and “contactless” subscription collection models. Over 85 per cent of the franchisee base, today collects subscriptions from customers digitally, including using “Easebuzz”, a digital collection platform that NXTDIGITAL partnered with, even before the lockdown was implemented.

Focused on content innovation to ensure subscribers remained connected and had access to their favorite content – launched innovative content packages like the “Vishesh Manorajan Pack” where customers could enjoy over 400 channels for a small fee; while facilitating a credit period for Local Cable Operators (LCOs) facing challenges to physically collect

NXTDIGITAL Ltd. CEO Vynsley Fernandes reiterated that “As an essential service providing critical video and data connectivity, it was and is imperative to step up and deliver uninterrupted services to customers whilst ensuring, without exception, the safety of our personnel, our partners and the ecosystem. The performance in Q1 against the challenging backdrop is a reflection of those carefully thought out and implemented strategies, consistent innovation, and singular commitment to our customer base.”

    Vision for Growth

NXTDIGITAL continues to focus on consolidating and growing its serviced subscriber base, expected to cross 10 million; including onboarding of more than 5 million of managed services customers. The potential base for managed services stands at over 69 million cable TV customers today – comprising smaller independent and regional MSOs. A significant portion of these customers are in semi-urban, semi-rural and rural markets; where the company has a growing presence by virtue of being able to deliver digital services to any part of the country through its HITS platform.

It is also developing innovative products and solutions to leverage the onset of the festival season and help customers derive maximum value. The “NXTGO” solution is an innovative dongle-type device that can be plugged into an OTT Set Top Box (STB) or an Android-based television and provide immediate access to “live” television channels – securely. The “NXTCONNECT” STB, a next-generation solution, is a single device for customers to access “live” television channels, OTT content, social and other apps, games, and much more.

The company is also working with partners to launch a Cloud-based mobile app – allowing customers to gain easy access to local services in their community, managed by NXTDIGITAL LCOs. The objective is to build a strong ecosystem of local merchants around the LCO – connecting merchants to consumers, seamlessly; thereby facilitating a new revenue stream for its thousands of LCOs.

  • Jio unveils Jio TV+, the OTT content aggregator for STB users

Jio unveils Jio TV+, the OTT content aggregator for STB users

KOLKATA: Over the last few years, Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL)’s annual general meetings have always bombarded shareholders, investors, users. While Google’s investment in Jio Platform and 5G solution, Jio has also unveiled a new feature for its set-top box users, JioTV+.

JioTV+  is a content aggregator that brings over the top (OTT) platforms, TV channels, various apps, and services together to its Jio set-top-box users. While Jio Fiber and Jio Set Top Box was introduced last year, the company has enhanced the Jio set-top box basis on learning from the beta programme.

“The Jio set-top box was launched with best OTT content across the world. We learnt one of the challenges that users faced was to discover their favourite content from the various applications that we had provided. This has given birth to Jio TV+ where we have aggregated all the content from 12 leading global OTT players,” Akash Ambani stated at RIL's 43rd AGM. It will offer easy access to content from major streaming services like including Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Voot, SonyLIV, ZEE5.

Jio TV Plus includes integrated voice search which works on genres, favourite actors, directors, producers and mood.

"We realised all of these 12 apps needed different login ids. To make it simple, we have introduced a single click to play any content without a separate login. Moreover, it requires a user to login a single time instead of logging in on different apps separately," he said

It also offers a majority of Live TV channels along with a host interactive features for users to engage in. The features are also available on various genres like GEC, news channels and music contests. “We believe that interactivity on the TV or two-way communication is the future of consumption," Akash Ambani added.

  • TRAI recommends mandatory STB interoperability

    TRAI recommends mandatory STB interoperability

MUMBAI: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) today released recommendations on interoperability of set top boxes (STB) for digital TV broadcasting services. STBs must be made interoperable within each segment of cable TV and DTH respectively.

TRAI says that currently, STBs are non-interoperable and that deprives the customer of the freedom to change his service provider and creates a hindrance to technological innovation, improvement in service quality, and the overall sector growth.

“The issue has its own challenges with disparate interest groups among distribution platform owners, CAS vendors, STB manufacturers and other stakeholders. Since the broadcasting sector is content-centric, security of content and robust anti-piracy features are necessary. Affordability of STB remains an important criterion and any suggested solution should not cause undue increase in price of STB. Ensuring proper content security, strong anti-piracy features and flexibility while keeping the STB costs reasonable are the main challenges for achieving STB interoperability,” says the release.

DTH STBs comply with the license conditions to support common interface (CI) module-based interoperability. However, in practice, even in the DTH segment, the STBs are not readily interoperable.

    TRAI recommends the following:

    * All set top boxes in India must support technical interoperability in principle, i.e., every STB provided to a consumer must be interoperable.

    * Ministry of information and broadcasting (MIB) may include a suitable clause/condition in the permission/registration/cable TV network rule mandating all the DPOs (DTH as well as MSOs) to compulsorily facilitate service provisioning through the interoperable STBs either provided by DPOs or procured by the consumers from open market.

    * There are technical and commercial constraints to universal STB. Therefore, interoperability of STBs, with effect from the date as prescribed vide the extant clause/ condition, shall be ensured within the DTH or cable segment. That is, the interoperability shall be applicable within the DTH segment and within the cable segment, respectively.

    * The MIB may notify through licensing conditions or amendment in the Cable Television  Network  Rules   1994  as  per  the  Cable  Television  Network (Regulation)  Act, 1995  or  through  any other appropriate  mechanism mandatory use of DVB CI+ 2.0 standards (with USB CAM) as per the ETSITS 103 605 standards both for DTI I STI3s and STFBs being used by MSOs from a prospective date.

    * A time of six month may be given to both DTH operators and MSOs to adopt DVB CI Plus 2.0 standards (with USB CAM) as per the ETSI TS 103 605 standards from the date of MIB notifications. MIB may also coordinate with BIS so that suitable amendments are brought within this time frame.

    * The authority recommends mandatory provisioning of USB port-based common interface for all  digital television sets in  India. MIB in coordination with TRAI and ministry of electronics and information technology may request BIS to amend the specifications for digital television sets to include provisioning of USB- based common interface port as per DVB CI Plus 2.0 standard based on ETSI TS 103 605 standards. Such specifications must mandate TV manufactures to:

    ·         Provide all digital television sets with minimum one open interface port based on DVB CI Plus 2.0 standards permitting simple connection of USB CAM to allow reception of television signals.

    ·         Provide digital television sets with built-in tuners to enable reception of television content through both satellite and cable platforms.

Setting Up of Coordination and Implementation Committee

A coordination committee may be set up by the MIB having members from the ministry of electronics and information technology, TRAI, BIS and representatives of TV manufacturers. The committee may steer implementation of revised STB standards for both the DTH and the cable TV segment.

Further, the committee may maintain continuous oversight for setting up of the digital television standards by BIS to provide for DVB CI Plus 2.0 port based on ETSI TS 103 605 standards and to have provision for reception of both DTH and cable television signals. The coordination committee may steer the adaptation of the revised STB and digital television standards in a time-bound manner.

  • Technicolor to showcase comprehensive range of technologies at CES

Technicolor to showcase comprehensive range of technologies at CES

MUMBAI: Technicolor Connected Home to demonstrate a comprehensive range of technologies — including DOCSIS 3.1,Android TV and Reference Design Kit (RDK), Wi-Fi 6, 6Ghz Wi-Fi, 5G, and Fiber Interoperability solutions at CES conference in Las Vegas January 7-10, 2020.

“Over the course of 2020, the network service provider (NSP) community will continue to invest in open platform-based solutions thereby maximizing the number of revenue-generating services that can be delivered to consumers. This is true for access technologies that bring broadband performance over cable, fibre and wireless to consumers, as well as the set-top box (STB) and Wi-Fi infrastructures that
ensure ubiquitous, intelligent and high-quality connectivity within their homes,” says  Technicolor Connected Home Deputy CEO and President Luis Martinez Amago.

To support this trend, Technicolor is showcasing an extensive portfolio of offerings that integrate open technologies — like Android TV and RDK middleware – into customer premises equipment (CPE) that can be rapidly deployed by NSPs around the world.

Specific solutions to be featured during CES 2020 include Technicolor Connected Home’s:

    ● JADE — a 4K Ultra HD STB that contains next generation 16nm silicon debuting the latest technology standards — such as Wi-Fi 6 and AV1 decoding in a small customizable design. This receiver, running on both Android TV and RDK, benefits from a powerful quad-core processor, Bluetooth 5.0 technology and an innovative stackable module enabling flexibility in the introduction of value-added services such as Digital Video Recording (DVR), far field voice control and Internet of Things (IoT).

    ● RUBY — an affordable yet fully equipped STB featuring Android P, Wi-Fi 5 as well as Bluetooth and Zwave technologies that support IoT use cases. The STB has integrated a range of proven technologies in a cost-effective manner to ensure high-quality connected experiences — from audio streaming with Bluetooth headphones to Wi-Fi babycam displays and IoT Zwave lighting systems. It is designed to support video services managed by operators as well as OTT offerings from providers like Google, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and others.

    ● Wi-Fi XL — a comprehensive wireless network solution that improves the coverage and quality of connectivity throughout the home while managing the complexity associated with the rapid rise of devices connecting to the Wi-Fi network. Wi-Fi XL (whole home coverage solution) demonstrates how gateways and extenders featuring Wi-Fi 6, EasyMesh and AirTies work together seamlessly. Wi-Fi 6 latency and throughput improvements are also being demonstrated in highly demanding situations such as when playing resource-intensive games like Fortnite while watching high-quality video programming.

    ● EasyMesh Roaming and Onboarding via NAVIGate — a demonstration of Technicolor Connected Home’s commitment to improving in-home wireless performance throughout the home in an intuitive manner.
