    E-comm ecosystem to create 1.45 million jobs by ’21: KPMG-Snapdeal

    MUMBAI: Ecommerce sector is powering employment generation in India, a report by Snapdeal & KPMG has concluded.

    Snapdeal, in partnership with KPMG today released the findings of a study examining the macro-impact of the e-tail industry and the associated ecosystem, on the employment landscape in India. The study titled Impact of Ecommerce on Employment in India focuses on the role of e-tail in socio-economic development, outlining the alignment of measures with key government initiatives like Make in India, Digital India, Start-up India and Skilling India, among others.

    Highlights from the Study
    o  E-tail and allied ecosystem (logistics, warehousing, IT, ITeS) is expected to create direct employment for around 1.45 million workforce by 2021
    o  Logistics and warehousing sector is expected to be the largest contributor (approximately 55%) to direct employment opportunities in e-tail
    o  E-tail is expected to add 0.4 million high-skilled jobs by 2021
    o E-commerce in improving the socio-economic environment
    o  Impacted employment generation beyond metros –  70% of the online sellers expected to come from smaller towns by 2018-19
    o  Driving women empowerment and self-sustainability –  20% of total online sellers today are women
    o  Government initiatives like Make in India, Digital India, Start-Up India, Skill India will fuel growth and generate further employment for e-commerce

    The study further outlines the potential challenges and shares recommendations on the different roles that various participants like the government, industry bodies and e-commerce companies themselves can play in building more employment avenues and up-skilling.

    DIPP wants to launch startup TVshow & channel

    MUMBAI: Well, well, what will happen next under Indian prime minister Narendra Modi. The Indian leader has been at the forefront of declaring that innovation and business enterprise from young Indians is what India needs to drive it to the super power status that it deserves. Hence, the initiative Start UP India, Stand UP.

    Now the department of industrial policy and promotion (DIPP) is gearing to give this entrepreneurship drive a further impetus.

    The government body which comes under the ministry of commerce & industry has written to the information & broadcasting ministry (MIB) that it would like to launch a channel meant for entrepreneurs and start ups, along the lines of the Kisan channel which the government introduced for farmers and villagers.

    It is working on creating a TV programme along the lines of Shark Tank, the American on-television start-up funding television format. The show will be aired on national broadcaster DD and an outside agency is to be given the task of selecting the entrepreneurial ideas from daring entrepreneurs. It will also be assigned the task to assemble a panel of venture capitalists to grill the wannabe entrepreneurs and provide them with funding on live TV.

    The finalists of the show will be showcased at the StatUp Fest next month in Hyderabad.

    GST Bill crucial for Start-Up India, Digital India success: IAMAI

    MUMBAI: Industry body – Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) has urged the Parliament to pass the crucial GST (Goods & Services Tax) Bill in the forthcoming budget session. The industry body has said that the smooth passage of GST Bill is crucial for the success of mega economic and social projects, especially Digital India and Start-Up India.

    The GST Bill, which subsumes all indirect taxes to create one rate and integrate the country into a single market, is the biggest tax reform that is being undertaken since Independence, but is pending approval of the Rajya Sabha.

    The Digital India plan is about connecting, empowering and enabling citizens and encouraging local electronic manufacturing. Similarly, Start-Up India is focused on promoting entrepreneurship, and through small entrepreneurs, generating employment.

    Local manufacturing, NoFN, e-Gov, as a part of Digital India, where private sector is involved, crucially rests on the successful passage of GST Bill in Parliament, which seeks to create one market through one tax system. Similarly, start-ups, online market places, and other online service providers, all require a single market plan.

    IAMAI president Subho Ray said, “The extant tax structure of India is heavily fragmented, with multiple indirect taxes levied by different authorities at different stages of a transaction. Fiscal federalism has led to different procedures and rates of VAT and other forms of LBTs across the states. This creates logistical challenges for the industry, besides giving rise to compliance related complications. Conflict of interests between tax authorities in case of inter-state transaction is a major pain point for the industry today. GST will help the digital industry business model flourish by providing uniformity in tax rates and regulations across the country. This will help doing business in India easier, allow free-play to market dynamics and allow deeper penetration of these services.”

    Given that much of the developments in the digital industry are disruptive innovations, business models like online platforms, aggregators, etc are essentially services provided by intermediaries. Such services are revolutionising the existing markets of both goods and services. Thus, online ticketing services or e-tailing are providing newer modes of access for consumers to existing goods and services, said IAMAI.

    The digital industry unequivocally stands for the smooth passage of GST and hopes that the bill will be passed in the upcoming budget session, as any further delay will push back the transformative projects of the government.

    NEW DELHI: Nine winners whose names were announced today by the Information and Broadcasting Ministry in contests organised on its social media platforms as a part of Republic Day celebrations, will get invitations to attend the Parade.

     

    The contests were held on Ministry’s platforms of Facebook (facebook.com/inbministry), Twitter (@MIB_India) and specially designed webpage (http://www.graffiti.inbministry.in) where graffiti were invited from participants on various flagship programmes of the Government.

     

    The competition was open for a fortnight from 1 to 14 January. The travel and accommodation arrangements of all these winners are being sponsored by Ministry.

     

    For the graffiti wall, the themes were Start Up India, Stand Up India; Digital Empowerment; Entrepreneurs of Young India; Skilled India, Powerful India; Make In India; Financial Security to All and Housing For All.

     

    The response on graffiti was over-whelming with 419 entries across all themes. The first prize in the graffiti contest was awarded to Narendra Kumar Singh for his work captioned Housing for All. “He has beautifully captured the idea of ‘Housing for All’ by using a metaphor of Weaver Birds’ nest. It shows independent and affordable housing for everybody across various income categories,” the jury said.

     

    The second prize was awarded to Narendra Borlepwar’s artwork Skill India, which depicts “the fusion of Education and vocational training leading to recognisable improvement in the economic graph.”

     

    The third prize was awarded to Vimal Kumar’s artwork Make In India showing “ladders, which visually double up as scaffolds on construction sites best captures the idea of ‘making.’”

     

    For the Twitter contest, netizens’ responses were invited on Twitter on three hashtags; #VisionofTeamIndia, #MyIdeaofIndia and #RDayNotJustaHoliday. A total of 888 tweets were received by @MIB_India. The winners of the tweet contests across three theme segments taken collectively are as follows in order of first, second and third places:

     

    Bhaiya ji Joshi @Igjganesh –“#MyIdeaofIndia For evry Mouth there is Meal for evry girl there is life For evry head there is roof For evry foot there is road (sic).”

     

    The I&B Ministry said that the user has summed up in very simple terms that everybody in the India should have the basic needs satisfied.

     

    N. Vinayak @vinumon2016 “#VisionofTeamIndia centre and states working together in the great act of nation building in spirit of ‘all for one and one for all.”

     

    In this, the user has drawn our attention to cooperative federalism, said the ministry.

     

    Neer Joy @neerjanni2000 – “#RDayNotJustaHoliday It is a moment2get inspiration 4rm freedom fighters & to taking up new initiatives4making India No1 country. (sic)”

     

    Via this message, the user has invoked the sacrifices and sufferings of freedom fighters for whom India became independent and a constitution was framed, the ministry said.

     

    Regarding the Poster making contest on Facebook, participants were invited to send posters on three themes; Give It Up – LPG Subsidy, Per Drop More Crop and Save the Girl Child. A total of 432 posters were received by the Ministry. The jury awarded first prize to A. Parag Chitnis for his artwork captioned “Save the Girl Child” where “the artist has highlighted a graphical representation of a female gene, which is led to the noose, whereas a male foetus seldom faces this ordeal.”

     

    The second best poster was designed by Sudhir Komawar for his artwork captioned “Per Drop More Crop,” which “brilliantly captures super imposed image of the leaves of crops inside huge drop of water reminding that how a universe of microscopic can subsist in a drop of water.”

     

    The third place was awarded to Anunay Arko for his painting captioned “INDIA where we worship goddess and a child is being killed, for being a GIRL.” It captures “a brilliant truism that women are the substratum of mankind.”
