Starcom names Sujatha Maniya as talent management head for SE Asia

MUMBAI: Starcom Mediavest Group has appointed Sujatha Maniya as talent management head for Southeast Asia.

She replaces Tang Seok Hian, talent management lead for SEA, who left to be a consultant.

Maniya will report into Starcom Mediavest Group Southeast Asia CEO and VivaKi country chair Jeffrey Seah. Her responsibilities include the development of strategic HR business plans, talent management and change management.

Maniya said, “Human Resource as a business practice is in a powerful position to influence business success in 2016, especially as organisational changes and shifting priorities continue to increase in complexity, frequency and scope. Organisations need to apply several strategies to prepare for and more effectively adjust during continuous change and at the core of those strategies are the HR business partners. HRBP’s who improve their skills, maintain partnerships and confidently and competently manage projects they lead, can make these changes, successful realties in their organisations.”

Seah added, “Culture, employer branding and industry outreach become key priorities for HR as each company competes in the space of talent attraction and acquisition. This means that most HR, if not all, will need to sell better, seal strategic partnerships with key players in the industry, and manage talent communities. HR, or organisation coaches as they are, will become a key enabler to help companies future-proof their businesses.”

  • 9X Jalwa looks to hook media agencies with Dubsmash challenge

9X Jalwa looks to hook media agencies with Dubsmash challenge

MUMBAI: Not only has the Dubsmash craze hooked stars and the common man alike, but television channels are also now making good use of the in-vogue platform. Hindi music channel 9X Jalwa, which launched a filler show 9X Jalwa Ki Dailoguebaazi in July, is now looking at engaging media agencies by throwing the 9X Jalwa Ki Dailoguebaazi Dubsmash Challenge on them.

What started with getting 9X Jalwa fans and viewers engaged with the competition via social media has now reached media agencies across Mumbai and Delhi.

According to 9X Jalwa vice president marketing Kapil Sharma, around 80 – 120 people from every agency will participate in the competition. “The reason why 9X Jalwa keeps doing these activities is to be on top of the mind of not only our viewers but media agencies as well. The idea is to reach out and connect with the media agencies,” Sharma said.

Besides promoting the challenge across television, digital and social media, the channel has taken this contest on-ground through trade activations across Mumbai and Delhi. “To promote this property and generally to have fun with media agencies, we have rolled out the Dubsmash challenge across several media agencies,” informed Sharma.

Three weeks back the channel opened entries for consumers and after gaining traction on social media, it approached media agencies.

Those participating in the competition include: Starcom, Group M, Lintas, Lodestar, Mediacom, MPG, Madison and ZO. The on-ground activation starts between 1 – 2 pm in the media agencies’ cafeteria, where people come and choose a song or any dialogue of their choice and make the Dubsmash video. Participants can perform individually or in a group and upload their entry. Winners get a chance to win a Bluetooth headphone or other general merchandise and every media agency will have one winner.

“We have done the activations with these media agencies in the past and have received a good response,” he added.

Since 9X Jalwa Ki Dailoguebaazi Dubsmash Challenges are being held only in media agencies, the channel is carrying the promotional activities in the same sector.

  • 9X Jalwa’s treat to media agencies

9X Jalwa’s treat to media agencies

MUMBAI: Media agencies usually help clients target consumers for their campaign and are usually never on the receiving end. Trying to bring such an interaction to media agency offices in Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru is 9X Jalwa while promoting its new look.

On 10 June, the channel had donned a new avatar with the tagline ‘Forever Young’, targeting viewers across all age groups who enjoy music that is enduring. The tagline also reflects the Bollywood playlist and music construct on the channel that is perpetual and never grows old.

According to 9X Media VP marketing Kapil Sharma, consumers have been enjoying the new look on television and so it was high time to target the trade media to create the same amount of buzz. “It is the trade media that get their clients to spend high budgets on our channel. After attracting the consumer media the immediate next step we thought was to target the trade media and highlight this fact across the agencies.”

Rather than treading the traditional route, it chose to go with fun creative activities in developed by Pure Media. It has created a unique game titled ‘Pic Charades’, which is a fun amalgamation of Pictionary and Dumb Charades using emoticons from instant messaging apps.

The participating teams will compete with each other to guess the Bollywood songs using these emoticons. The songs featured in these games are from the 9X Jalwa playlist. The team with maximum points wins merchandises.

Sharma says that through the activation the channel wanted to convey the message that songs remain forever young. “Primarily the songs that we play on Jalwa currently are from the 90s and 2000s. If you like a particular song, no matter how many times you listen to it, it still remains fresh.”

As emoticons have become a part of everyone’s daily life, the channel thought it right to tap into it. “A lot of times you receive forwards on your personal messenger where you have to guess the name of a song or a movie by using emoticons. We thought this is something that people enjoy and have fun playing it. So why not draw an inspiration and create our campaign revolving around this entire thought,” he highlights.

Apart from the activities, branding exercises will be done even in Chennai. Different cut outs, standees, posters and tent cards have been put across agencies. Mailers, ads and advertorials are being simultaneously released across trade websites and magazines.

The engagement goes online as well. If a person misses the chance to participate when the contest is happening in the cafeteria, a tent card is left on the desk of the employee and he/she can email those answers.

Moreover, the pictures of people participating and people winning prizes will be shared on the 9X Jalwa Facebook page. At present, 9X Jalwa has 126,259 likes on Facebook at the time of penning this article. However its Twitter page needs a push with just 1,280 followers.

Sharma goes on to say that out of the total budget, 60-70 per cent is spent on the consumer related promotions and 30-40 per cent is spent for trade communications.

Nat Geo kick starts the second season of ‘Covershot’

MUMBAI: The only reality TV show on photography is back! Nat Geo’s ‘Covershot’ franchise returns with its second season in a brand new avatar to unlock ‘Mission North-East’. And to get the season off to a grand start, National Geographic Channel has organized a photo exhibition of the masterpieces clicked by last year’s contestants.

Targeting leading agencies, such as Group M, Madison, ZO, Starcom, Lodestar and Mediacom, across Delhi and Mumbai, from 27th January to 4th February for the photo exhibition, Nat Geo aims to create a buzz and conversation-starters around the very coveted, aspirational field of photography and their hugely successful ‘Covershot’ property in its latest season. While the exhibition in itself is a treat for the layman and photography enthusiasts alike, what comes across most poignantly yet again is the fact that the show served as a brilliant platform for amateurs to showcase their talent. And in addition to the more obvious attractions, at a time when National Geographic Channel is primed to launch one of its biggest properties for the year, the photo exhibition stands out as a pertinent, yet engaging go-between to reach out to multiple stakeholders, including their key partners.

Commenting on the importance of engagement through varied approaches, Ms. Debarpita Banerjee, VP, Marketing, National Geographic and FOX International Channels, said, “When the show itself is such a visual treat, the best way to announce the launch would but naturally be through its visuals. A walk down the exhibition aisle would demonstrate the length and breadth of talent showcased on Covershot.”

10 exciting episodes, 10 illustrious contestants, 1 cut-throat competition – ‘Nat Geo Covershot: Mission North-East’ will take you on the exquisite north-eastern trail this season, with host Shibani Dandekar and judges Rajiv Laxman and Lana Šlezi? – launching early April.

  • Starcom MediaVest seals a data deal with Acxiom

Starcom MediaVest seals a data deal with Acxiom

MUMBAI: Many mergers, partnerships and acquisitions happened in this year. Now, when the year is coming to an end, there’s another big deal that has been sealed between media agency Starcom MediaVest Group and marketing technology and services company Acxiom. A multi-year deal has been signed between the two.

The deal will let Starcom use Acxiom’s Audience Operating System, which enables audience segmentation and targeting across online and offline media using first-party and third-party data. The two firms aim to develop new applications for the system, such as targeting TV advertising.

The deal gives the Publicis Groupe an option to expand its services to other companies under the umbrella. It also gives Starcom MediaVest the first right of refusal for using Acxiom system in overseas markets when in becomes available outside US. Acxiom expects to roll out the audience targeting platform in the UK and China next.
However, the deal isn’t exclusive and Starcom can test system with other companies as well.

The time-frame of the deal hasn’t been revealed by the companies. And since Publicis and Omnicom are in the middle of a merger approval process, there’s no indication on how the Acxiom deal might extend over to Omnicom agencies once the merger is completed.

The new partnership is followed by similar deals that have been signed earlier in the year. A pact gave Starcom MediaVest a first crack at premium Twitter ad inventory, and is intended to give the agency the ability to influence new Twitter products. Even last month, a deal between Starcom and Yahoo was announced which gave the agency exclusive access to Yahoo’s first-party data on its visitors.
