Star India valued at $11.3 billion: Morgan Stanley

MUMBAI: Media tycoon Rupert Murdoch has reason to cheer as 21st Century Fox’s India subsidiary – Star India has emerged as a strong contributor to the parent company.

As per a brokerage firm Morgan Stanley’s Year End ‘Fair Market Value’ report for financial year 2016, Star India has been valued at a whopping $11.3 billion, leaving behind its competitors.

The number makes a deeper impact on the parent company’s financial performance worldwide as ad revenue for the media giant from developed markets is slowing.

End of June financial reports saw Star India’s earnings from just entertainment business alone at about Rs 1,920 crore.

An earlier report titled ‘Grow Fox, Grow’ from the same investment firm recognised Star India’s growing profitability as one of the key drivers of healthy acceleration in financial year 2017 for 21st Century Fox. On the basis of their growing revenue, the report estimates Star India to contribute 11.3 per cent to the overall fair market value of the American parent.  The report comes in the wake of a financial statement released by 21st Century Fox highlighting their overall performance and acknowledges the role played by Star Sports in giving Fox a commendable financial year.

In an earlier financial report released by the company, media mogul and 21st Century Fox executive chairman Rupert Murdoch highlighted the importance of their newly acquired sports rights. “The appeal of our new sports rights resonated with consumers globally, whether it was Star Sports in India setting new records with hundreds of millions of viewers for the ICC Cricket World Cup, or the more than 25 million viewers who watched the Women’s World Cup Final on FOX,” said Murdoch.

With Star India acquiring broadcast rights of Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) domestic and international matches in India through 2018, the network has made a conscious effort to optimise their revenues through sports in India.

As per Morgan Stanley’s report, the other key factors that will dictate the Fox’s performance in FY17 include TV margin expansion, operating leverage from domestic affiliate revenue growth and growth at film productions, which was valued at $4.7 billion.

On the other hand, the risks to the growth over the next two years are advertising pressures, pay TV sub erosion against the strong pricing growth at Fox’s networks and capital allocation as forecasters feel that Fox is most likely to lead the industry in the dynamic landscape ahead.

U Mumba lifts PKL 2 trophy; Star India’s estimated earnings pegged at Rs 55 cr

MUMBAI: With Ronnie Scewvala’s U Mumba lifting the Pro Kabaddi League season 2 trophy, the second edition of the sport has come to an end. U Mumba won the final against Bengaluru Bulls with six points, after a nail biting match. While the winning team is celebrating, the other happy party is its official broadcaster Star India, which seems to have made moolah aplenty from the property.

Sources close to the development gave Indiantelevision.com an assessment that the broadcaster succeeded to generate revenue to the tune of Rs 55 crore.

While the native sport always had an enormous fan following in the country, what it lacked was proper packaging. When packaged in an alluring manner, the sport garnered a cumulative reach of 435 million in its debut season. In terms of viewership too, the sport managed to surprise many as it garnered annual viewership of 128 GVTs.

This year, the ratings have propelled and after 49 matches, the tourney garnered 1.25 TVRs compared to 0.81 TVRs of 2014. The average reach has also inclined from 3.74 per cent to 4.43 per cent. The time spent has gone up in the 2015 edition to 20.41 minutes compared to 16.88 minutes as per TAM Sports analysis.

While Star retained the title sponsorship with Star Sports, the broadcaster successfully roped in eight associate sponsors on board viz. TVS, VIP Frenzie, Bajaj Electricals, Thums Up, State Bank Of India, Flipkart, Government of India Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) and Mahindra Jeeto. On the other hand, while Radio Mirchi associated with Pro Kabaddi as radio partners, Britannia became the referee partner.

  • Ronnie Screwvala to launch mobile games, animation series & movie on Pro Kabbadi League

Ronnie Screwvala to launch mobile games, animation series & movie on Pro Kabbadi League

MUMBAI: 10 Kabaddi, 9 Kabaddi will soon reach mobile screens as serial entrepreneur Ronnie Screwvala invests in setting up a mobile game with all the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) franchises and players in it.

What’s more, Screwvala also envisions television and animation series alongside a movie around PKL. Screwvala, who is also the owner of PKL’s UMumba franchise, is of the opinion that such innovations around the traditional sport will help in making it more aspirational.

Kabaddi saw a decent beginning in its first year, attracting over 435 million television viewers, which prompted Screwvala to plan an array of properties around the sport. What’s more, the second season of Pro Kabaddi League picked up not only in terms of sponsorships, but also viewership. According to the TAM Sports analysis, PKL season 2 has seen a 60 per cent growth in viewership as compared to the last season for the first 26 matches. “It is a popular sport. Now, we want to make it into an aspirational one, give it some stature,” Screwvala was quoted as saying in an ET report.

Not only Screwvala, the sport’s success also garnered appreciation from veteran media mogul Subhash Chandra. “Star Sports is doing a great job and is packaging the sport well. It is sports like these, which will make India a sporting nation and not just a cricket nation,” he had said recently.

The mobile game around PKL being built for all platforms will seek to initially build brands out of some recognisable UMumba players such as Anup Kumar and Shabeer Bapu. Later, as the game grows, Screwvala plans to integrate other teams as well. His team at USports has been fielding queries from people to make a live action television series and an animation series around Kabaddi. For the animation series, Screwvala is looking at a feel-good kind of underdog story of a young kid, where characters from the UMumba team will guide the protagonist. “Eventually, we want to create characters. The idea is that kids should play this in school, make it more of an aspirational sport,” Screwvala said.

The ET report further suggests that in the live action TV series, the story is likely to focus on three friends who come from three different states and how their lives intertwine, through kabaddi. “Our experience also teaches us that if you want a game to arrive, you want to have a big screen attachment to it. So, therefore, a movie is also being planned,” he said, pointing out that scriptwriters are right now understanding the back story of kabaddi players.

  • “Sports like Pro Kabaddi League will make India a sports nation:” Dr Subhash Chandra

“Sports like Pro Kabaddi League will make India a sports nation:” Dr Subhash Chandra

MUMBAI: Star Sports’ Pro Kabaddi League has found many admirers and amongst them is none other than Essel Group chairman Dr Subhash Chandra.

Speaking about Pro Kabaddi League, Chandra said, “Star Sports is doing a great job and is packaging the sport well. It is sports like these, which will make India a sporting nation and not just a cricket nation.”

When asked if Essel Group was mulling at starting something in the league, he said, “I am sure my sports team would be looking at it.”

The second season of Pro Kabaddi League has picked up, not only in terms of sponsorships, but also viewership. According to the TAM Sports analysis, the sport has seen a 60 per cent growth in viewership as compared to the last season for the first 26 matches.

The League, for the first 26 matches, has bagged 1.24 TVR as compared to 0.77 TVR in the last season. What’s more, Pro Kabaddi League season 2 has seen a 13 per cent growth in its average reach as well. This year it registered 4.45 per cent average reach as compared to 3.92 per cent in the last season.

The Time Spent per Viewer (TSV) has gone up from 15.77 in season 1 to 19.91 in season 2.

It can be noted that while in season one Pro Kabaddi League was being telecast on Star Sports 1, Star Sports 4, Star Gold, Star Sports 3 and Star Sports 2, in the second season, it is being aired on Star Gold, Star Sports 3, Star Sports HD2, Star Sports HD3, Maa Movies, Star Sports 2, Plus Suvarna and Star Pravah, thus giving it a larger reach and visibility.

  • FY-2015: Cable and Filmed Entertainment boost Fox op income 3.1%

FY-2015: Cable and Filmed Entertainment boost Fox op income 3.1%

BENGALURU: Rupert Murdoch’s Twenty-First Century Fox Inc. (Fox) reported a 3.1 per cent increase in adjusted annual total segment operating income before depreciation and amortisation (OIBDA) of $6488 million for the year ended 30 June, 2015 (FY-2015) as compared to the $6291 million last year due to higher contributions from the company’s Cable Network Programming and Filmed Entertainment segments.

The company reported total revenues in FY-2015 of $28.99 billion, a $2.88 billion decrease from prior year revenues of $31.87 billion. Excluding the net revenues from the Direct Broadcast Satellite Television (DBS) businesses, Sky Italia and Sky Deutschland AG, which were sold in November 2014 to Sky plc (Sky), in both years, adjusted revenues increased $890 million, or 3.4 per cent, over the $26.06 billion of adjusted revenues in the prior year. This increase was primarily driven by double-digit revenue growth at the Cable Network Programming segment.

Fox reported annual total segment operating income before depreciation and amortization (OIBDA) of $6.72 billion, which is equal to the amount reported in the prior year. Excluding the OIBDA contributions from the DBS businesses in both years, OIBDA increased $197 million, or the above mentioned 3.1 per cent, over the $6.29 billion of adjusted OIBDA in the prior year.

    Company Speak

Fox executive chairman Rupert Murdoch said, “We made clear operational strides over the last year that will further position us to benefit from the strong and growing global demand for high quality video content. We delivered a solid financial performance, driven by sustained gains in affiliate fees, while we continued to invest in building our new channels Fox Sports 1, FXX and Star Sports. The appeal of our new sports rights resonated with consumers globally, whether it was Star Sports in India setting new records with hundreds of millions of viewers for the ICC Cricket World Cup, or the more than 25 million viewers who watched the Women’s World Cup Final on Fox. Our film studio achieved outstanding critical and box-office success with a truly diverse range of films and we are proud of the creative excellence that earned it the most Academy Awards in the industry. Our company is well positioned for this time of opportunity in our industry. We will balance the utilization of our strong balance sheet to drive growth. Today’s announcement of our new $5 billion buyback authorization reflects our ongoing program to provide direct shareholder returns.”

    Cable Network Programming

Cable Network Programming annual segment OIBDA increased five per cent to $4.65 billion, driven by a 12 per cent revenue increase led by continued strong affiliate revenue growth and higher advertising revenues. The revenue improvement was partially offset by a 16 per cent increase in expenses, representing higher sports programming costs driven by the broadcasts of the ICC Cricket World Cup at Star Sports, increased Major League Baseball and NASCAR rights costs at Fox Sports 1 (FS1), and higher professional team rights costs at the regional sports networks (RSNs) as well as increased entertainment programming costs at FX Networks. The segment OIBDA growth was adversely impacted by five per cent from foreign exchange rate fluctuations, primarily in Latin America and Europe.

Domestic affiliate revenue increased 17 per cent reflecting the combination of sustained growth at the regional sports networks (RSNs), Fox News Channel and FX Networks, increased contribution from FS1, and the consolidation of the Yankees Entertainment and Sports Network (the YES Network). International affiliate revenue increased three per cent driven by strong local currency growth at the Fox International Channels (FIC) and Star, partially offset by a 12 per cent adverse impact from the strengthened US dollar.

Domestic advertising revenue grew four per cent over the prior year period led by double-digit growth at the sports channels, including the impact of the consolidation of the YES Network, as well as growth at Fox News and FX Networks. International advertising revenue increased 14 per cent due to strong local currency growth at Star and FIC, which was partially offset by a five per cent adverse impact from the strengthened US dollar.

OIBDA from the domestic channels increased 12 per cent from the prior year, led by strong double-digit growth at the RSNs, which includes the impact of the consolidation of the YES Network, as well as higher contributions from Fox News Channel and National Geographic Channels. Annual OIBDA at the company’s international cable channels declined 16 per cent from the prior year as double digit local currency growth at the FIC channels and Star entertainment channels was more than offset by the impact of the ICC Cricket World Cup at Star Sports and the adverse impact from the strengthened US dollar, primarily in Latin America and Europe.

    Television

Full year segment OIBDA of $718 million decreased $164 million or 19 per cent versus the prior year. The decline principally reflects the absence of advertising revenue and OIBDA generated from the broadcast of the Super Bowl in the prior year. Excluding the impact of the Super Bowl in the prior year, segment revenues were consistent with the year ago as strong retransmission consent revenue growth was counterbalanced by a 6 percent decline in advertising revenues reflecting overall lower general entertainment ratings at the Fox Broadcast Network.

    Filmed Entertainment

Full year segment OIBDA of $1.45 billion increased $87 million, or six per cent, over prior year amounts reflecting higher film studio contributions partially offset by lower contributions from the television production businesses and the absence of full year contributions from Shine Group (Shine), which was contributed into the Endemol Shine Group joint venture in December 2014. The film studio’s growth was led by strong worldwide theatrical and home entertainment performance across a diverse set of releases, including Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, The Fault In Our Stars, Taken 3, Gone Girl, Kingsman: The Secret Service and The Maze Runner as well as the home entertainment performance of Rio 2. The film studio’s commercial and creative success was further highlighted by the all-time industry record it set of more than $5.5 billion in global box-office receipts for calendar 2014, as well as its industry leading eight Academy Awards for Fox Searchlight, including Best Picture for Birdman: Or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance). Segment OIBDA growth was also adversely impacted by nine per cent from foreign exchange rate fluctuations.

Total equity (losses) earnings of affiliates

Annual equity earnings from affiliates were $904 million as compared with $622 million in the prior year. The increased contributions from affiliates reflects increased contributions from Sky primarily resulting from the Company’s share of Sky’s gains on the sale of its ownership stakes in National Geographic Channels International, Sky Betting & Gaming (Sky Bet) and its shares in ITV partially offset by purchase price amortization recorded by Sky related to its acquisition of the DBS businesses from the Company, as well as the absence of pre-tax gains related to the Company’s participation in Sky’s share repurchase program which ended last fiscal year. The higher Sky contributions were partially offset by the inclusion of equity losses of Endemol Shine Group, the absence of the YES Network contributions in the current year resulting from its consolidation in February 2014 and higher losses from Hulu.
