Star Sports signs Rana Daggubati, Puneeth Rajkumar & Diljit Dosanjh to push ProKabaddiLeague

MUMBAI: It has been quite evident since the launch of its in-house campaign #AsliPanga that Star Sports is going out guns blazing to promote the fourth leg of its flagship sports IP, Pro Kabaddi League (PKL).

The three promo videos that the channel released last month quite frankly make fun of the currently popular tropes in Hindi GECs, and caricatures the showdowns in the prime time news channels and doesn’t spare the overly VFX-fied south Indian films.

And when we thought the network couldn’t get more mass than this, with less than two days  for the tournament to go on air, the channel has roped in three major personalities as its brand ambassadors — Rana Daggubati, Puneeth Rajkumar and Diljit Dosanjh.

While Rana Daggubati of  ‘Bahubali’ fame is pleased to renew his association with the sport this season as well, Karnataka’s Puneeth Rajkumar, often touted as the region’s power star  is also all charged up to give a leg up to rustic sport as well.

On the other hand,  Diljit Dosanjh-  singer, actor and television presenter from the Punjabi music industry who recently rose to fame with ‘Udta Punjab’ —  is also looking forward to witness many super raids, super tackles and other super moves of Kabaddi.

In fact a promotional  music video starring Diljit Dosanjh and released on 21 June is already garnering massive eyeballs on social media courtesy his tremendous popularity in the north and now in the Hindi speaking regions of the rest of India as wel, following the Udta Punjab controversy.

Subsequently, the channel today released similar music videos featuring Rana Daggubati and Puneeth Rajkumar on 23  June.

Speaking on its aggressive marketing strategy towards Star Sports Pro Kabaddi a Star India spokesperson said, “The first three seasons of the league saw an overwhelming response from TV viewers, stadium spectators and sports enthusiasts. There is a growing passion for the sport and this success helps us in our goal of encouraging sporting talent and nurturing heroes. Our brand ambassadors Rana Daggubati, Puneeth Rajkumar and Diljit Dosanjh lend their bold, powerful image to Star Sports Pro Kabaddi and re-iterate the spirit of Kabaddi. The fact that Kabaddi is now the country’s second most viewed sport, second only to cricket, brings us great pride.”

The fourth season is set to take place a couple of days from now –  25 June to 31 July  with the existing eight teams participating. It will be the first time for an Indian league to be held two times in the same year.

“Unlike cricket and football, in the case of kabaddi, fans have limited opportunities to engage with the live sport. So, we decided to have the league twice a year,” said Star India sports president and head Nitin Kukreja. The reason: the channel has more faith in the IP, thanks to the year on year growth of the franchise.

As per ESP properties SportzPower report 2016, PKL has seen a whooping 300 percent growth, pushing its revenue to Rs 480 million in 2015, that too without a title sponsor.

The league has attracted premium brands – State Bank of India, TVS Motor, Bajaj Electricals, Flipkart. It added Gionee Mobiles and Idea Cellular as associate sponsors and got three new commercial partners in the form of PepsiCo, Indo Nissin Foods and Fair & Lovely Men Facewash in Season 3. Not to mention, Force Motors has recently announced itself as the principal sponsor for the Puneri Paltans for Season 4.

  • Star India dedicates 8 channels for 24×7 coverage of Rio 2016

Star India dedicates 8 channels for 24×7 coverage of Rio 2016

MUMBAI: Living to its campaign tag line #issebadakuchnai, Star India will be pulling out non-stop coverage of the Rio 2016 Olympics games by dedicating eight channels to the blockbuster event on a 24×7 basis. Beginning 5 August 2016, the Brazil Olympics games will be broadcast in two languages, English and Hindi.

Apart from the eight channels, Star India will extensively cover the global multisport event on its OTT platform Hotstar. Together Star Sports and Hotstar will broadcast 3000 plus hours of live content from the Olympics offering Indian sports fans every opportunity to catch every medal live.

Star Sports HD channel cluster (Star Sports HD1, HD2, HD3, HD4) will mirror the SD one (Star Sports 1, 2,3, 4). Star Sports1 and 4 and its corresponding HD feed will have the English language telecast and Star Sports 2 and 3 with the corresponding HD feed will telecast the Hindi coverage.

Star Sports CEO Nitin Kukreja said, “Star Sports has been at the forefront of establishing a multi-sport culture in India. While cricket continues to reach new heights, Indian sports fans have already shown their love for kabaddi and football. The Olympics are the pinnacle of a multi-sports event, and as India prepares to send its largest ever contingent, Star Sports is leaving no stone unturned to provide the most comprehensive access to Indian sports fans. We will provide unprecedented coverage by dedicating eight channels on a 24×7 basis across the entire duration of the event. Also for the first time ever, the Olympics will be broadcast (24×7) in two languages, English and Hindi.”

Talking about the numbers, Kukreja said, “Rio 2016 is something that goes beyond advertising and viewership numbers. As a brand, we truly believe in that India is getting ready to accept more and more sports. That the largest contingent going to the Olympics this year from India is remarkable in itself.”

Apart from this, Star Sports has also exclusively empanelled an elite panel of International and Indian Olympians as well as sports experts who will share, analyse and connect with the Indian viewers as live actions unfolds at the Olympics. This select list of eminent sports personalities includes Ian Thorpe, Prakash Padukone, Anjali Bhagwat, Viren Rasquinha and Rehan Poncha. Holding them together would be the credible voice of presenter Paula Malai Ali in English, while in Hindi, Divya Jaitley, the well-known face amongst Indian sports presenters will be engaging the viewers.

Star’s video streaming platform Hotstar will be rolling out an unprecedented coverage of the Olympics, with 14 live feeds consistently and up to 36 concurrent seeds at peak times on the Olympics video player, available to users on demand through the event.

Hotstar CEO Ajit Mohan said, “While Hotstar is covering Olympics for the first time, we are excited that we are bringing an all-round coverage of the Olympics for the Indian digital user that will be the best in the world. Like in our coverage of other sporting events, our focus will be not just on making every moment of the Olympics available to the fans but also provide them the ability to create personalised, interactive experiences that allow them to follow and watch what is of unique interest to them.”

Coverage of Olympics has created new digital benchmarks in the past in North America and Europe, and with Hotstar emerging as a primary screen in affluent metro homes in India, the platform is seeking to break new records on the breadth of coverage and viewership. Central to Hotstar’s offering to sports fans will be the rollout of an interactive, data rich Olympic player on the web where users will have the option to switch between the 14 live feeds, have access to day wise listing of events and medals tally, and the ability to personalise the experience by following specific countries and sports disciplines.

  • Q3-16: Affiliate & Advertising revenues prop 21st Century Fox revenue 5.7 percent

Q3-16: Affiliate & Advertising revenues prop 21st Century Fox revenue 5.7 percent

BENGALURU:  Rupert Murdoch’s Twenty-First Century Fox Inc. ( 21st Century Fox) reported 5.7 percent year-on-year (y-o-y) growth in adjusted total revenue (revenue) for its third quarter ended 31 March 2016 (Q3-16, current quarter). 21st Century Fox reported revenue of $7,228 million in the current quarter as compared to $6,840 million in the corresponding year ago quarter. This revenue growth reflects higher affiliate and advertising revenues at both the Cable Network Programming and Television segments partially offset by lower television production revenues at the Filmed Entertainment segment. The adverse impact of foreign exchange rates in the current quarter impacted revenue growth by $204 million, or 3 percent in total.

Affiliates fees in Q3-16 increased 7.3 percent y-o-y to $2,939 million as compared to $2,740 million. Advertising revenue in the current quarter increased 3.6 percent to $1,907 million as compared to $1,840 million in the corresponding year ago quarter. Content revenue in Q3-16 increased 4.5 percent y-o-y to $2,288 million to $2,189 million. ‘Other’ revenue in Q3-16 increased 32.4 percent y-o-y to $94 million from $71 million.

Quarterly total segment operating income before depreciation and amortization (OIBDA) of $1,881 million increased $204 million, or 12.2 percent, from the $1,677 million of quarterly OIBDA reported in the prior year. The increase principally reflects double digit OIBDA growth at each of the company’s Filmed Entertainment and Cable Network Programming segments partially offset by lower contributions from the Television segment. The adverse impact of foreign exchange rates impacted OIBDA growth by $110 million, or 7 percent.

21st Century Fox reported quarterly income from continuing operations attributable to stockholders of $844 million ($0.44 per share), compared with $990 million ($0.47 per share) in the prior year. Excluding the net income effects of Other, net and gains and other adjustments related to Sky plc and Endemol Shine Group included in equity losses from affiliates, adjusted quarterly earnings per share from continuing operations attributable to stockholders was $0.47 compared with the adjusted year-ago result of $0.42.

21st Century Fox executive chairmen Rupert and Lachlan Murdoch said: “We delivered significant revenue and earnings growth in the quarter on the strength of gains in affiliate and advertising revenues across our domestic and international cable portfolios as well as at our television segment. Whether it was Fox News outranking all of basic cable for the first time, FX delivering the year’s most watched new cable show with The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story, or Star Sports remaking televised sports in India, the unique appeal of our industry leading brands and premium content has never been clearer. This strength extended to our film studio, which broke global box office records and expanded a global franchise with Deadpool, while delivering its second strongest quarterly earnings ever. The demonstrated value of our brands and our outstanding creative content will drive our businesses forward in both the existing and evolving media marketplace.”

    Cable Networking Programming (CNP)

CNP revenue in Q3-16 increased 9.8 percent y-o-y to $3,941 million as compared to $3,590 million. Cable Network Programming quarterly segment OIBDA increased 11.5 percent to $1,375 million driven by a 10 percent revenue increase on higher affiliate revenues and low double digit advertising revenue growth, partially offset by a 9 percent increase in expenses.

Domestic affiliate revenue increased 7 percent reflecting sustained growth at FX Networks and FS1. Domestic advertising revenue grew 17 percent over the corresponding prior year quarter reflecting higher ratings and pricing at Fox News and a higher number of National Basketball Association games played in the current quarter at the Regional Sports Networks as well as the impact from the consolidation of the National Geographic non-channels businesses. Domestic OIBDA contributions increased 7 percent over the Q3-15 led by higher contributions from FS1, Fox News and FX Networks.

International affiliate revenue increased 6 percent driven by strong local currency growth at the Star India and Fox Networks Group International (FNG International) channels, formally known as Fox International Channels, or FIC, which was partially offset by a negative 14 percent impact from the strengthened US dollar. International advertising revenue increased 6 percent as local currency growth at the Star India and FNG International entertainment channels was partially offset by a negative 11 percent impact from the strengthened US dollar. Quarterly OIBDA at the international cable channels increased 67 percent reflecting strong growth at the Star India channels due to both higher affiliate and advertising revenues at the entertainment channels and lower rights costs at the sports channels due to the absence of the prior year broadcast of the ICC Cricket World Cup.

    Television

Television revenue increased 5 percent y-o-y in Q3-16 to $1,298 million from $1,237 million in Q3-15. Television generated quarterly segment OIBDA in Q3-16 of $125 million, a $16 million decrease from the $141 million reported in Q3-15. Quarterly segment revenues were 5 percent higher than in Q1-15 due to strong retransmission consent revenue growth and higher advertising revenues led by higher political spending at the TV stations. The decrease in segment OIBDA was driven by higher contractual sports programming costs at the Fox Broadcast Network that more than offset the higher revenues.

    Filmed Entertainment

Filmed Entertainment segment reported a 2.8 percent y-o-y decline in revenue to $2,321 million in Q3-16 as compared to $2,389 million in Q1-15. Filmed Entertainment generated quarterly segment OIBDA of $470 million, an increase of $88 million, or 23 percent, from the $382 million reported in the same period a year-ago. The OIBDA increase was driven by higher contributions from the film studio, led by the record-breaking worldwide theatrical release of Deadpool, which has grossed over $760 million in worldwide box office to date and is the top grossing R-rated movie ever, partially offset by lower television production results reflecting the absence of the network delivery of Glee, which aired its final season on the Fox Broadcast Network last year. Q3-16 segment revenues decreased primarily reflecting lower worldwide home entertainment and television production revenues and a 3 percent negative impact from foreign exchange rate fluctuations, partially offset by higher worldwide theatrical revenues, led by the theatrical release of Deadpool. Foreign exchange fluctuations adversely impacted segment OIBDA growth by 13 percent.

ICC Worldcup T20 2016 sets new record in viewership; both traditional and digital

MUMBAI: ICC World T20 2016 has locked a 114 percent viewership growth in India, making it one of the most successful years for the tournament, says ICC.

“In India alone, the India versus Pakistan encounter rated 17.3 across the Star Sports network and Doordarshan, the best rated Twenty20 match ever since the final of the World Twenty20 in 2007, reaching 83 million people. And the cumulative in-home viewership for the event in India was 730 million, an increase of 114 per cent over the previous edition,” read a statement released by International Cricket Council.

Commenting on the unprecedented success of the ICC’s digital and broadcast activity at the ICC World Twenty20 India 2016, ICC chief executive officer David Richardson said, “It is a fact that the ICC World Twenty20 2016 engaged with fans, old and new, like never before. The dynamic and fascinating cricket on field was matched by the innovative presentation of the world feed broadcast and the efforts of our broadcast partners, which delivered record viewership numbers. “

The tournament, won by the West Indies men’s and women’s teams, which beat England and Australia in their respective finals at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on 3 April, was the first major ICC event produced by ICC TV. That involved coverage of 48 matches across seven venues in India using 30 cameras at each venue.

The tournament also showcased staggering figures when it comes to its digital reach with 320 million video views across ICC digital properties and social media pages alone. “During the event, 46 million people across the world engaged on Facebook, the most ever for any Twenty20 event in history, while the 85 press conferences streamed live on the ICC’s Facebook page had more than 10 million views,” ICC shared. In addition to that there were 5.75 billion impressions of Tweets related to the ICC World Twenty20, an all-time record for any cricket event. The data on the digital activities was equally stunning and it all added up to make the event a hugely successful one.

“Our philosophy that the game is about the fans encouraged us to push digital media and broadcast boundaries at the ICC World Twenty20 India 2016 with some creative and engaging activations and innovations. And this enhancement, supplemented by the skills of the players and a highly competitive format, contributed enormously to the overall success of the tournament as we recorded unprecedented broadcast and digital figures. We are delighted with the results and look forward to continuing to develop both our digital activities and our broadcast coverage ahead of next year’s ICC Champions Trophy and the ICC Women’s World Cup, both set to be held in the United Kingdom,” Richardson concluded.
