    MUMBAI: Star Sports Network continued its domination over Broadcast Audience Research Council (India) ratings in the penultimate week of the year. The 51-week data for the sports genre placed Star Sports 3 on the top spot in the channels’ ratings, to be followed by Star Sports 1. It is clear that these numbers have been obtained by the recently-concluded India-England test series, which saw the home team winning 4-0 after Karun Nair and R Jadeja’s exploits in the final test.

    Star Sports 3 was beaming the India-England fifth test live in Hindi, and got a total of 190571 impressions. Collated on an all India basis with 4+ audiences, the ratings proved that Test cricket, when exciting, will ensure good viewership. The second spot was owned by Star Sports 1 with 152792 impressions, a channel which broadcast the match with English commentary. In the third and fifth place were Ten network’s Ten 1 and Ten 2 with 9477 and 14031 impressions, respectively. The fourth spot was held by Star Sports 2, which got a total of 45625 impressions.

    The period in consideration is 17 December to 23 December and the last test was played from 16 December at Chennai. It was a mammoth innings from Karnataka batsman Karun Nair, who scored a record-breaking 303. The third day of the test saw Karun scoring the bulk of his runs, with Lokesh Rahul also getting out on a heart-breaking 199. The batting testimony got the highest viewership in terms of programs as the third day got 3013 impressions on Star Sports 3.

    The fourth day of the fifth test stood second, with 2978 impressions. Karun Nair had completed his triple century on this day, breaking several records on the way. The third spot went to the final day of the test with 2478 impressions, which saw Ravinder Jadeja picking up seven wickets to derail England batting and win the test. Both the second and third highest viewership were garnered on Star Sports 3.

    In the fourth spot is WWE Roadblock, featured on Ten 1. The program got 2390 impressions. The fifth and the final spot was sealed by the India-England series, garnering a healthy 2220 impressions on Star Sports 1. Star Sports network have benefited a lot from this highly exciting test series, getting good numbers in the last two tests which India won handsomely.

Owing to intense finishes, audience numbers in the last three games at Mohali, Mumbai and Chennai in the India versus England series was good. Following India’s good performance, broadcast rights holder Star India and its digital sibling Hotstar too gained.

    While India defeated the England cricket team comprehensively 4-0 in the five-match Test series, it was clear that Captain Virat Kohli and his team’s exploits were getting back the mojo associated with Test cricket. Team India’s cricketing exploits reflected on the numbers too: a total of 572 million impressions in the first four Tests in the urban market and a total of 956 million impressions in the all-India market.

    The fourth Test saw Kohli hitting 235, his third triple century this year. According to Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) India ratings, the highest viewership, 246 million impressions, was garnered in the fourth Test, in which India defeated the visitors by an innings and 36 runs. This was also the highest rating for any Test featuring India in the last three years. Calculated on 4+ all-India pro-rata base, the data proves that it was indeed the ‘Biggest Test series of the Year’.

    With Dean Jones clearly suggesting that Asia, in general, and India, in particular, need to like the longer format of the game for its survival, the ratings prove that audiences are on the right track. With the next test series at home lined up against Australia, there’s surely no dearth of excitement for the fans of the longer version of the game. The four match Test series starts on 23 February 2017.

    Meanwhile, coming back to India vs. England series, the first Test got 244 million impressions in the all-India market and clocked 144 million impressions from the urban market. The second Test grew in numbers with 248 and 147 million impressions, respectively, in the all-India and urban market.     The winning team will pocket Rs. 3 crore, the runners-up receiving equivalent to half that bounty — the highest in the world. The teams which finish third and fourth will bag Rs. 75 lakh each. Danish shuttler Jan O Jorgensen is the costliest male player, going under the hammer for Delhi Acers for Rs 59 lakh.

    Among the Indian contingent, Hyderabad’s blue-eyed girl Sindhu is the most expensive female player at Rs 39 lakh, representing Chennai Smashers. The male category is led by Kidambi Srikanth, who’s playing for Awadh Warriors for Rs 51 lakh. Saina Nehwal sustained several injuries in 2016, but will still be one of the costliest Indian players, having been bought over to play for Rs 33 lakh.

    Indian badminton national coach Pullela Gopichand said that the spectacular performance of Indian players at the Olympics has added a staggering number of new viewers to the game, and the league would be more exciting and interesting than ever before.
