One day to go: Are marketers excited to cash in on the IPL 2021 craze?

KOLKATA: As the country slowly descends into the second wave of the pandemic, a sudden sense of bleakness is on the rise among the populace. More and more people are trying to stay at home because of partial lockdowns, night curfews. Against this gloomy backdrop, the Indian Premier League (IPL 2021) is a cause for cheer. With just one day left, the tournament is exciting brand marketers as well.

For IPL 2021, official broadcaster Star Sports has already onboarded 18 sponsors and 100 plus advertisers. According to media reports, the network has hiked ad rates for both TV and OTT this year looking at a cool Rs 3,200 crore in revenue. While the IPL has always been considered an expensive property, industry heads from advertising agencies and brands believe it should be looked at from a value proposition rather than a cost point of view.

The insight emerged during a virtual roundtable IPL 2021: Brand marketers’ delight? hosted by Indiantelevision.com, and moderated by its founder, CEO and editor-in-chief Anil Wanvari. Mediacom national buying head Srinivas Rao, Initiative India EVP & head of south Priya Iyer, Byju’s marketing head Atit Mehta, Amplifi India (dentsu) group trading director Sujata Dwibedy took part in the engaging session.

“IPL gives us a platform like no other. It is a long event that keeps the audience engaged, it gives us the highest mass viewership, it is not only a cricket event, but an entertainment package. It is one of the events which has a very high co-viewership – meaning it is for the entire household to watch,” Dwibedy said.

The annual extravaganza also gives the highest ratings and no other GEC programme comes close, she added. Most importantly, IPL gives brands a spike in the top of mind awareness (TOMA) which is the immediate awareness a brand looks for. Hence, emerging categories lineup every year as it drives up awareness in a short span.

Moreover, one of the key reasons IPL sees interest from brands is it has moved from catering to specific cohorts to multiple cohorts long back, Iyer explained. Starting as a metro phenomenon, it has travelled across tier-2 and tier-3 cities to reach deeper with regionalisation efforts from Star Sports. Regional feeds have helped brands foray further into the heartland.

Globally, any sporting property is expensive. If a brand does not opt for the cash-rich league or a sporting event, it might go for multiple other options at a lower price. But if they choose a music reality show, ten other channels will have such shows but the IPL is a unique property on one channel, Mehta stated. If a brand plans well and looks at long term ROI, enough value can be created from a business angle.

Echoing the sentiment, Mediacom’s Rao also agreed to Mehta emphasising the value proposition of IPL. “You just need to be there through various elements. If I look from an advertiser point of view, you would want to have all aspects being in place. If you are doing an association with a smaller property and smaller pockets, you don’t get to ride on a campaign through Virat Kohli,” he explained.

It is a well-documented fact that viewership switches to the IPL when it’s taking place, resulting in a significant decline in other genres. Hence, it becomes difficult for seasonal brands to avoid the league. If they have to choose another genre, they will have to plan very carefully. So, despite being expensive, the tournament brings out value for those brands as well.

While the 13th edition of the IPL was like a welcome deluge after a drought of live sports, there have been two power-packed international cricket series since then. However, panelists played down fears of over-saturation and contended that Indian audiences can never get tired of cricket. Moreover, any victory of Indian team tends to boost viewership further, Iyer added. Dwibedy also reminded that the IPL has a more mass consumer appeal compared to other cricket properties, which have a more loyal and slightly male-skewed fan base.

This segued into a discussion on female oriented brands being scarce on the IPL advertisers list. According to Dwibedy, many food and beverage and FMCG brands are now coming on board which was not the trend a few years ago. For instance, Reckitt came on board for IPL 2020. But she acknowledged the fact that female targeted brands are mostly efficiency oriented. Along with that, the high price could act as a deterrent as these brands need to be present in other genres too.

Iyer highlighted that women-led FMCG brands are present on the event but they may not fall in the top 20 categories, their participation might be different in nature compared to big categories. On the other hand, Rao noted that more FMCG brands spent money on IPL 2020 as consumer demand was not back to track and those brands wanted to bet big. Now with demand coming back, supply chain issues solved, they have taken a step back again.

In terms of overall expectation, the viewership this time around will be higher as more people would need to stay at home during night curfews and weekend lockdowns, opined Rao.

By contrast, Mehta stated: “My expectation from IPL 2021 is somewhat lower than 2020. The excitement isn't as high as it was last year. But, I think it should deliver as much as it delivered last year, though it could be some percentage points behind compared to last year.”

For this season, open competition will build up the excitement and the first three days of the tournament being close to the weekend will add to it. If games are played in all fairness, enough buzz will be created around it, giving brands recall value. The first 10-15 matches will set the tone of the entire season, Iyer noted.

After a delayed start to the league in 2020, Star India managed to rake in Rs 2,800 crore in TV ad revenue and is expecting this figure to get a substantial boost during IPL 14. This year, Star Sports has witnessed significant interest from multiple brand categories including ed tech, fantasy sports, FMCG, beverages, financial services, pay wallets, home décor among others.

“Vivo IPL is back on the Indian soil, and in its original summer window. India-England Test series scores reach of 103 mn viewers

KOLKATA: In a bid to drive its reach and growth, digital payments platform PhonePe is betting big on the IPL by taking up six different sponsorships for this year’s edition. • Eventually, IPL 2020 scored big with advertisers, sponsors

Eventually, IPL 2020 scored big with advertisers, sponsors

NEW DELHI: When IPL 2020 began in September, there was a lot of speculation in the industry about its capability to churn out the spectacular revenues like every year. The sponsorship rates had gone down by as much as 25 per cent, and it was highly uncertain that the advertisers, who were still reeling from the financial disaster that Covid-2019 turned out to be, would be willing to spend the big bucks on advertising. However, broadcast partner Star was pretty positive that it would manage to surpass its previous year’s revenue records and clock sales of more than Rs 2000-crore that it managed to churn in 2019. And as it  panned out, it was not just Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma who held the trophy aloft after an easy win against the Delhi Capitals in the finals last evening, but the broadcaster also had some big wins in its kitty.

The Media Ant Co-founder Samir Chaudhary stated that IPL 2020 turned out to be a big property for the broadcaster with viewership numbers attaining new highs in IPL 2020. His expectation is that Star will pocket higher revenues than in the previous season.

Havas Media Group India national head – buying R. Venkatasubramanian agreed, estimating the  jump to be around 10-12 per cent (TV + digital) over last year.

“They sold most of the inventory well before the start of the tournament. As per my knowledge, they must have sold only three to five per cent inventory during the tournament and the sticker prices were 10-15 per cent more than what was offered initially,” pointed out Venkatasubramanian.

The initial rates ranged between 10 and 15 lakhs per 10 second, as Indiantelevision.com had reported earlier. There were five co-presenting sponsors for Dream11 IPL 2020 on Star Sports – Dream 11, Phone Pe, Amazon, Vodafone Idea and Byju’s; 13 associate sponsors: Mondelez, ITC Foods, Polycab, Diageo, P&G, Coca-cola, Hero, KP Group, Facebook, Daily Hunt, Samsung, Cred and AMFI. Beyond the live game – Byju’s was the sponsor for the pre-and-post-game live show – Byju’s Cricket Live.

The categories of advertisers included BFSI, edtech, online gaming, online shopping, home décor, mobile handsets, consumer durables, FMCG, auto, apparel amongst others. Internet and digital-based business like fantasy sports, edtech, e-commerce, and online gaming, also got good traction.

As confirmed by a Star Sports spokesperson, IPL 2020 had 18 sponsors and a total of 110 advertisers on board, which is the highest number of partners and advertisers in the history of the IPL, since it began in 2008. Most of the inventory was sold in advance.

IPL 2020 performed exceptionally well in terms of viewership as well.  As per BARC data, for television,  IPL 2020 has seen an increased engagement and affinity, reflected through the higher number of games watched. IPL 2019 had 326 billion minutes consumption. That mark had been surpassed in this year’s IPL when just 50 out of the 60 games had been played.

Additionally, the season recorded the most games watched by an average viewer for any 60-game IPL season and the highest engagement for any IPL ever on the back of regionalisation with Hindi and southern language feeds (Telugu, Tamil and Kannada).

“The viewership has increased 18-19 per cent compared to last year (till the sixth  week of the tournament) and mostly IPL 2020 will finish with 15-18 per cent higher viewership compared to IPL 2019,” Venkatasubramanian highlighted.

That will be more power to the game of cricket. And the love that its fans give it.

  • IPL 2020 excitement builds as final looms

IPL 2020 excitement builds as final looms

MUMBAI: Two hours to go. And the top two teams till the playoffs will be slugging it out with each other in the IPL final  as a billion cricket lovers watch the fierce competition on the field. Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals – two teams which impressed one and all on the way with their fighting spirit. Both the blues will be on the field.

It was not an easy IPL and it went down to the wire, with five teams almost level, until the playoffs. Yes, there were no spectators. But the simulated audience cheers, encouraging roars, the instruments blaring away, did not make that apparent at all. The palpitating excitement kept you glued to your screen – whether mobile, TV or laptop. And the commentators, well, they surpassed themselves, and put in that extra effort they took to get the action seem more engaging.

Cricket lovers responded in droves: the opening match had 200 million viewers across TV and digital; with the fixture streamed behind the Disney+ Hotstar pay wall seeing a record 8.4 million viewers. Yes last year’s audience numbers on Hotstar were higher, by multiples, but it was a free AVod service. Star India’s goal is to go past a record 550 million viewers for the entire league, as it had elaborated at its start.

Of course, the brands made merry: whether it was Dream11 or  Byju’s or Zomato, or Unacademy or  payTM or Cred or Ceat or Tata Motors (and its famous gold standard vehicle Altroz displayed during the matches at the three stadiums and being talked about by the commentators) or  Upgrad or Great Learning or  Usha fans or AMFI – the list could go on.

Clearly, an association with the IPL helps get a tremendous recall value, and especially if the communication is humorous and brings a smile to your face – a tack many of these brands took. More than a hundred brands associated with the IPL, whether with the broadcaster or with the franchises or with the BCCI.

Fortunately for them, the sponsorship ticket sizes were not as large as last year, giving them a fabulous return on their investments. Even as  broadcaster and streamer  Star India and Disney +Hotstar took a hit in revenue, they build a stronger bond with cricket lovers.

Expectation amongst all is that the final telecast today is going to set new records in terms of viewership, even though tomorrow is gold buying time and the festival mood is in full swing.  It’s the classic old duel, Mumbai – the Indian commercial capital – vs Delhi – the political capital – though Delhi is led by a Mumbai lad. Who will triumph? Punters are betting it will be Mumbai Indians who have a better pedigree or track record, but who knows Delhi might spring a surprise.

Whosoever wins, for audiences too, the IPL has been time well spent. The sixes have rained, the wickets and bails have been lit up very often, new players have emerged, records have been set and  there have been more than enough heart stopping super-overs. Clearly cricket has entertained, and how.  2020 will be known as the year when despite the most challenging Covid 2019 circumstances it was sport – namely cricket – which turned out to be a winner.
