  • Hindi GEC rankings unchanged in week 7

MUMBAI: With no change in the pecking order of Hindi GECs for week seven, Star Plus continued to lead the list.

Star Plus was the leader with 259 (264) GRPs followed by Zee at 226 (243) GRPs, according to TAM data (HSM including 5 new LC1 markets, C&S, 4+) for the week ended 9 February, sourced from a Hindi GEC.

Colors took the third spot with 205 (206) GRPs and Sony, the only GEC in the top four to have added rating points, maintained its number four spot at 164 (160) GRPs.

The only significant change in the rankings came as Life OK gained a substantial 18 GRPs to reach 142 GRPs (124) and take the number five spot. Sab raked in 136 GRPs in week seven (132).

The gap between number one and number two spot that had narrowed down to 21 GRPs in week six widened to 33 GRPs as Zee lost 17 rating points as opposed to the loss of five rating points on Star’s part.

Consequently, the gap between the number two and number three spot reduced from 37 in week six to 21 in week seven.

The highest rated show on television for week seven was Star’s Diya Aur Bati Hum averaging 4.8 rating points through the week. The second spot was shared by Colors’ Balika Vadhu and Star’s Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai at 4.3 TVR each. Last week’s highest rated show Sapne Suhane Ladakpan Ke raked in 3.9 TVR (4.3) in week seven as did Sasural Simmar Ka on Colors (3.1).

Pyar Ka Dard on Star Plus garnered 3.8 TVR (3.9) while Colrs’ Madhubala secured 3.4 TVR (3.0). Zee’s Qubool Hai raked in 3.4 TVR (3.3) while Pavitra Rishta maintained ratings points of 3.3 TVR, same as last week.

Shows from the crime genre consisted of Sony’s top two shows with Crime Patrol at 2.8 GRPs (2.5) and CID at 2.3 TVR (2.8).

  • Zee TV highest gainer in week 6 of 2013; Star Plus retains top spot

MUMBAI: Zee TV was the only Hindi GEC with significant gains in week six of 2013 at 243 gross rating points (GRPs), allowing it to narrow the gap with leader channel Star Plus.

Zee TV added 29 GRPs to week five’s 214 GRPs and maintained its No. 2 position in the Hindi general entertainment channel hierarchy. The jump is the combined result of all the regular shows (weekend and weekdays) gaining or maintaining the ratings and a fair performance of the weekend properties — English Vinglish 1.1 GRP for 12 noon airing and 1.6 GRP for 8.00 pm airing; Fear Files 1.2 GRP on Sunday and 2.3 on Saturday; and the Valentines Event that raked in 3.2 GRPs.

Star India’s Hindi GEC Star Plus continued to lead the ratings race at 264 GRPs, though it did suffer a loss of 17 GRPs from the trailing week.

There has been no change in the pecking order of GECs since last week as Colors takes the third spot with 206 GRPs (week five – 210 GRPs).

Sony Entertainment Television gained one GRP to reach 160 GRPs and maintained its position at number four, according to TAM data (HSM including 5 new LC1 markets, C&S, 4+) for the week ended 9 February, sourced from a Hindi GEC.

While last week saw Star Plus as a big leader with a lead of 67 GRPs, this week the gap between number one and number two narrowed to 21 GRPs. Consequently, the gap between the second and third place increased from four GRPs in week five to 37 GRPs in week six.

Zee gained seven GRPs for the weekday primetime slot (7.00 pm to 11.30 pm) to collect a total of 115 GRPs from this band. In the weekday afternoon slot too, Zee was the highest gainer (four GRPs) at 27 GRPs as was the case in the weekend primetime slot where it gained four GRPs to collect 36 GRPs in all.

Star Plus gained six GRPs in the weekday primetime slot (total 119 GRPs), two GRPs in the weekday afternoon slot (total 24 GRPS) and lost 16 GRPs in the weekend primetime slot (total 39 GRPs).

In the case of Colors, the channel lost 12 GRPs in the weekday primetime slot (total 98), gained two GRPs in the weekday afternoon slot (total 18 GRPs) and gained 11 GRPs in the weekend primetime slot (total 40 GRPs).

Sony remained more or less stable from week five to week six shedding just three GRPs in the weekday primetime band (total 45), gaining one GRP (total 13 GRP) and losing two GRPs (total 40 GRPs) in the weekday afternoon and weekend primetime segments respectively.

Zee’s show Sapne Suhane Ladakpan KE was the highest rated show for week six at 4.3 TVR (3.8 TVR), followed very closely by Star Plus’ Diya Aur Bati Hum at 4.2 TVR (4.3 TVR). Star’s Saathiya Saath Nibhaana raked in 3.6 TVR (3.9 TVR) while Zee’s daily soaps Qubool Hai (3.1 TVR) and Pavitra Rishta (3.3 TVR) both got ratings of 3.3 TVR. CID continued to be Sony’s top performing show with 2.8 TVR, unchanged from week five. Star Plus’ dancing reality show Nach Baliye raked in 3.0 TVR (3.5 TVR) while Sasural Simmar ka on Colors earned 3.1 TVR (4.0 TVR).

Star India’s second GEC Life OK gained three GRPs to reach 124 GRPs in week six (week five – 121 GRP) while Sab TV lost two GRPs to end up at 132 GRPs in week six.

Star Plus to hold web premiere of Saraswatichandra

MUMBAI: On the occasion of Valentine’s Day, Star India’s Hindi GEC Star Plus will be premiering its upcoming romantic serial Saraswatichandra on the internet.

The show, which also marks ace director Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s entry into the television space, goes on air on 25 February. It will be aired from Monday to Friday at 7.30 pm.

With the web premier, Star Plus is hoping to reach out to a large number of digital audiences and create even more anticipation for the eventual launch of the show on television. The premiere will happen today at 3 pm.

Star Plus vice president marketing Nikhil Madhok said, “Saraswatichandra is a really unique love story and we feel that it will find great traction amongst the youth. So we decided to do a web premiere of the show, where the digital audiences will get to see the show much in advance of its TV debut. Valentine’s Day provided the perfect timing to do so for a love story.”

  • Star Plus appoints Contract Advertising as creative AoR

MUMBAI: Star India‘s general entertainment channel Star Plus has appointed JWT‘s Contract Advertising to handle its creative duties.

The account was earlier serviced by Ogilvy.

The decision comes after the channel called for a pitch in the latter half of 2012.

The agency‘s Mumbai office will be in charge of the account.

  • Special events & Movie telecasts shuffle GECs’ top ranking in 2013

MUMBAI: 2013 is turning out to be a fluid market for the Hindi general entertainment channels (GECs). With the fight for the top position becoming tougher, the leading GECs are betting on big-ticket properties to give them spikes to surge ahead of competitors on a weekly basis.

Bollywood awards shows, big movie premieres or shows hosted by Bollywood stars are proving to be critical ingredients for a channel to occupy the top chair. Sans this kind of content, the top four Hindi GECs are in a very closely contested race.

In week five ended 2 February, the premiere of Son or Sardar propelled Star Plus back to the number one position by a big lead. Star was similarly the leader in Week 1 because of the Big Star Entertainment Awards.

In week 2, Colors was the leader as the finale of Bigg Boss 6, a reality show hosted by Bollywood star Salman Khan, gave it a spike in gross rating points (GRPs). Without this tent pole property, Colors slipped to the third position in the third week while Star Plus regained the No. 1 spot.

Zee TV was at the top in week 4 as Zee Cine Awards gave it a sharp rise in viewership.

Madison Media Infinity SVP Monaz Todywalla agrees that January has become the season of specials. “One of the reasons why competition is this close is because the proportion of time on fiction has reduced from the same period last year. Clearly channels are using specials to maintain their positions even as programming executives get time to evaluate their fiction offerings.”

As per TAM data (HSM including 5 new LC1 markets, C&S, 4+) for week five, sourced from a Hindi GEC, Star Plus got back to the leadership position with a wide lead of 67 GRPs over the second GEC. The GEC in the second position was Zee TV with 214 GRPs.

Star Plus notched 281 GRPs in week five with an addition of 48 GRPs to the previous week’s ratings. The channel had telecast ‘Son of Sardar’ for three hours each at 1 pm and 9 pm on 27 January that clocked 3.9 TVR and 4.5 TVR, respectively. The movie airings collectively contributed 50 GRPs to the channel’s viewership.

Taking the second spot in week five is Zee TV, which lost 31 GRPs from a week earlier at 214 GRPs. It wound up Sa Re Ga Ma Pa on 27 January that clocked 2.2 TVR for a three-and-a-half hour telecast contributing around 15 GRPs to its viewership. The other shows of the channel have seen marginal difference in the viewership.

Just four GRPs away from Zee TV is Colors that added 15 GRPs to close the week with 210 GRPs. The channel’s new reality comedy show ‘Nautanki the Comedy Theatre’ made a debut with 2.9 TVR on 2 February. It’s shows like Balika Vadhu (4.7 TVR), Sasural Simar Ka (4 TVR) and Madhubala (3.9 TVR) have seen increase in viewership.

Sony Entertainment Television (Set) lost 27 GRPs in week five compared with a week earlier. Its total GRPs in the week totaled 159. In the previous week, Set had premiered Karan Johar’s ‘Student of the Year’ that notched a 4.2 TVR and had also telecast the finale episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati-6 that fetched a TVR of 3.1 TVR.

Sab clocked 134 GRPs (previous week 145) and Life OK 121 GRPs (previous week 114).

Sahara One with 24 GRPs (last week 25 GRPs) remains at the bottom of the ladder.

The data includes the five new LC1 (Less than Class I) markets: Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh (including Uttaranchal), PHCHP and Rajasthan.

With the release of these markets, TAM now covers 92 per cent of the HSM urban market from the earlier 74 per cent.

  • Zee TV returns to top spot after 19 weeks as Zee Cine Awards clicks

MUMBAI: After stepping into the second rank in the Hindi GEC (general entertainment channel) hierarchy, Zee TV has taken a week to climb to the tentpole position as its four-hour Bollywood awards show Zee Cine Awards on 20 January attracted audiences.

Zee TV‘s upward crawl to the No. 1 position has come after 19 weeks in the fourth week of 2013.

The awards show rated a whopping 3.9 TVR, contributing 31 GRPs (gross rating points), as Zee TV collected 237 points in the week ended 26 January. The channel’s overall viewership was up 22 GRPs from a week earlier.

Zee TV had ranked No. 1 last in week 36 of 2012 when it had aired the ‘mahasangram’ of three of its fiction shows. This is also the first time after digitisation in the four metros that the flagship Hindi GEC of Zee Entertainment Enterprises reached the top position.

The 13th edition of Zee Cine Awards had rated 4.38 TVR in 2012. Apart from Zee Cine Awards most of the fiction shows of the channel including Fear Files (1.6 TVR) saw a dip in viewership in the fourth week.

“Such award functions are premium properties and have always delivered, giving good mileage to the brands associated. However, there was audience fragmentation because of which the show (Zee Cine Awards) could not perform as well as it did last year. There was ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’ on Sony and repeat telecast of ‘Colors Golden Petal Awards’ on Colors, both coinciding with one-and-a-half hour airing time of Zee Cine Awards,” a senior media planner said.

The other annual Bollywood awards function that was telecast this year was Colors Screen Awards, which too had recorded 3.9 TVR over four hours on 19 January.

Meanwhile, Star Plus slipped to the second spot with a loss of 13 GRPs at 228 GRPs in week 4. The channel’s leading shows like ‘Diya Aur Bati Hum’ (4.1 TVR), ‘Ek Hazarome Meri Behena hai’ (1.4 TVR) and Nach Baliye (2.4 TVR) lost viewership.

Colors too lost six GRPs to register 204 GRPs. The fiction shows of the channel have seen marginal change in viewership. The channel had repeat telecast Colors Screen Awards (1.5 TVR for three hour run) and Colors Golden Petal Awards (1.6 TVR for two-and-a-half hour airing) in week 4 that helped the channel compensate the loss of viewership. In the earlier week Colors had earned 31 GRPs from Colors Screen Awards.

Sony Entertainment television (Set) added 16 GRPs in week 4 on the back of the television premiere of Karan Johar‘s recent flick ‘Student of the Year’ on 26 January. The film notched a TVR of 4.2 for three-and-a-half hour airing. The movie contributed around 29 GRPs to the total of 203 GRPs that the channel collected in week 4.

Set also winded up the sixth season of its biggest reality show ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati on‘ 26 January. The grand finale of the show clocked 3.1 TVR for two hours telecast, contributing around 12 GRPs to the channel.

The second Hindi GEC of Set, Sab clocked 151 GRPs (previous week 146 GRPs) while Star Plus’ sister channel Life OK ended week 4 with 120 GRPs (previous week 128 GRPs).

Sahara One with 23 GRPs (previous week 25) remains at the bottom of the ladder.

  • Zee TV climbs to No. 2 for 1st time in 2013; Star Plus regains top spot in week 3

MUMBAI: Zee TV has climbed to the second rank in the Hindi GEC (general entertainment channel) hierarchy for the first time in 2013 as some of its special shows performed strongly in week 3.

Star Plus regained its top position as Colors, living without its popular reality show Bigg Boss, slipped ground to take up the No. 3 spot.

As per TAM data (HSM, 4+, C&S) sourced from a Hindi GEC, Zee TV in week three of 2013 added 20 GRPs to its previous week’s tally to gross 215 GRPs.

Zee TV gained particularly from its special shows, where episodes of two serials are combined into one show, which the channels calls ‘mahasangram’. Zee TV had aired mahasangram of Hitler Didi and Pavitra Rishta on 14 January that rated 3.3 TVR for one hour telecast; mahasangram of Qubool Hai and Punar Vivah on 18 January clocked 3.2 TVR for a 90-minute telecast.

Also, Zee TV’s ‘Sapne Suhane Ladakpan Ke’ was the third most watched show on a Hindi general entertainment channel, after Star Plus’ Diya AUr Baati Hum (4.4 TVR) and Colors’ Balika Vadhu (4.4 TVR). The Zee show has even become the weekday 7.30 pm slot leader with an average of 4 TVR.

Zee TV had also aired mahaepisode of ‘Sapne Suhane Ladakpan Ke’ on 19 January, which recorded 3.1 TVR for 90-minute airing against Colors Screen Awards.

The gains made by Zee TV, however, were not enough to beat Star Plus. The Star channel returned to the top spot after a week with 241 GRPs, unchanged from a week earlier. The channel was the second most watched Hindi GEC last week as Colors occupied the top position on the back of ‘Bigg Boss- 6’ finale that had rated 4.4 TVR.

Colors slipped despite the telecast of Colors Screen Awards (the 19th edition of the annual Bollywood awards) on 19 January garnering 3.9 TVR for a four-hour run. The telecast of this event contributed around 31 GRPs to the channel.

Colors had replaced Bigg Boss -6 with two fiction shows – ‘Sanskaar Dharohar Apnon Ki’ and ‘Na Bole Tum Na Maine Kuchh Kaha-2’ that opened with 1.56 TVR and 2.16 TVR respectively. The channel lost 35 GRPs to end the week with 210 GRPs.

“While there is marginal drop across, Bigg Boss-6 which went off air last week was not replaced by shows performing as well as the reality show. This is the reason for the GRP loss for Colors,” a media planner said.

Sony Entertainment Television (Set) lost eight GRPs to end the week with a tally of 187 GRPs. The leading shows of the channel like CID (3.4 TVR) and KBC (2.7 TVR) had lost viewers. The channel launched a new fiction show on 14 January titled ‘Amita Ka Amit’ that had debut TVR of 1.1. It replaced Love Marriage Ya Arranged Married which concluded with a 0.5 TVR.

Next in the hierarchy is Sab with 146 GRPs (previous week 150) and Life OK with 128 GRPs (previous week 117 GRPs).

Sahara One with 25 GRPs (previous week 25) remained at the bottom of the ladder.

  • Bigg Boss 6 lifts Colors ahead of Star Plus

MUMBAI: Colors was at the top among Hindi general entertainment channels (GECs) in the second week of 2013, as Star Plus lived without its big spike show, Big Star Entertainment Awards.

In its finale week, popular reality show ‘Bigg Boss‘ gave Colors the leg up to recapture the top position after three weeks. Colors winded up the sixth season of its celebrity reality show ‘Bigg Boss‘ on 12 January with 4.4 TVR and ran for two-and-a-half hours contributing 22 GRPs to the overall numbers of the channel. The Salman-Khan hosted show, which airs for an hour per episode, averaged 3.3 TVR in the week ended 12 January compared to 2.8 in the trailing week.

As per TAM data (C&S, 4+, HSM), sourced by Indiantelevision.com from Hindi GECs, Colors got 245 GRPs (previous week 253) in the week, leading Star Plus by a slender margin of four GRPs.

Star Plus lost 46 GRPs in the second week compared to a week earlier. ‘Big Star Entertainment Awards‘, which was aired on the New Year‘s Eve, had added 41 GRPs to Star Plus‘ viewership to give it 287 GRPs.

Also, the average ratings of Star Plus‘ weekend dance reality show ‘Nach Baliye‘ fell from 4.3 TVRs (television ratings) to 3.6 TVRs in the second week. The other shows of Star Plus have seen minor fluctuations in viewership.

Colors lost eight GRPs as some of its fiction shows like ‘Madhubala‘ (3.6 TVR), ‘Parichay‘ (1.3 TVR) and ‘Sasural Simar Ka‘ (3.5 TVR) witnessed slight fall in the viewership.

Zee TV and Sony Entertainment Television (Set) jointly shared the third spot with 195 GRPs each. The two channels stood in the same position two weeks ago (in week 52) with 198 GRPs each. Zee TV lost 15 GRPs from a week earlier while Sony added 14 GRPs.

Set‘s popular game show ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati-6‘ aired the episode of the first Rs 5 crore winner this season on 12 January which notched a 5.1 TVR. The other shows of the channel like ‘Comedy Circus‘ (3.3 TVR), C.I.D (3.7 TVR) and ‘Bade Achche Lagte Hain‘‘ (2.3 TVR) too saw increase in eyeballs.

Zee TV‘s newly launched fiction property ‘Housewife‘ clocked 2.2 TVR in week 2 (previous week 2.5 TVR). The other shows of the channel like ‘Sapne Suhane Ladakpan Ke‘ (3.5 TVR) and ‘Hitler Didi‘ (2.2 TVR) lost viewership while ‘Qubool Hai‘ (2.7 TVR) and ‘Mrs Kaushik Ki Paanch Bahuyein‘ (1.8 TVR) saw improvement in ratings.

Multi Screen Media‘s second GEC Sab didn‘t see any change in ratings and ended week 2 with 150 GRPs, the same as in the previous week. Life OK was next with 117 GRPs, down three GRPs from a week earlier.

Sahara One with 25 GRPs (last week 23) continues to be at the bottom of the ladder.

    Digital Viewership

In HSM, digital, 4+, market, Colors again is the leader with 253 GRPs (previous week 245 GRPs). Bigg Boss 6 finale notched 5.2 in digital market. Star Plus, which had climbed to No.1 spot in digital market on the back of ‘Big Star Entertainment Awards‘, slipped to No.2 position with 233 GRPs as compared to 275 GRPs in the previous week.

Sony was in the third spot with 202 GRPs, while Zee TV followed with 178 GRPs.

Sab‘s GRPs in digital were 143 and Life Ok 108 GRPs in week 2.

  • Bollywood frenzy catapults Star Plus to top in digital homes too

MUMBAI: Star Plus ended rival Colors’ six-week run as the top Hindi general entertainment television channel in digital homes in the first week of 2013, riding high on the Bollywood obsession among Indians.

The telecast of Big Star Entertainment Awards, an annual event that honours the chosen best in Bollywood, for three-and-a-half hours on the New Year‘s eve helped Star Plus displace Colors from the No. 1 position in digital homes. Star Plus enjoys a leading position in the overall market (including both digital and analogue television homes).

In the first week of the new year ended 5 January, Star Plus notched 275 GRPs (up from 225 in the 52nd week of 2012) with 44 of those contributed by just the Bollywood awards show, according to TAM Media Research data sourced from a television channel. In the overall market, the Bollywood awards show garnered 41 GRPs. It helped Star Plus widen its lead to 34 GRPs from 7 GRPs in the 52nd week of 2012 against its immediate rival Colors, which remained in the second position.

Star Plus GM Nachiket Pantvaidya said, “It is indeed heartening to see a brilliant response from our viewers (to the Big Star Entertainment Awards show).”

In fact, Star Plus regained the top position in digital market (HSM, 4+) after a gap of seven weeks since the first week of November 2011. Apart from the previous six weeks where Colors was at the top, Zee had occupied the top position in week 46. In week 44 and 45, Star Plus was at the number one position in digital market, as it was in the overall market.

The government had mandated complete switchover to digital delivery of television channels in the top four metros from 1 November but the adoption of digitisation has happened almost fully in Mumbai and Delhi and to a great extent in Kolkata. Chennai is lagging far behind and is caught in a legal hurdle in the Madras High Court.

Colors could add just three GRPs (gross rating points) to gross 245 GRPs in the first week of 2013 (previous week 242 GRPs). The Viavom18 channel had aired Colors’ Golden Petal Awards, the channel’s in-house awards function, which notched 4.56 TVR in the digital market, same as in C&S market. The Golden Petals Awards contributed 32 GRPs to its total GRPs in the first week.

Colors CEO Raj Nayak had, on being consistently at the top in the digital market for several weeks, said, “….With the digitisation completed in Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata (to a lesser extent though), these three markets put together contribute to a large proportion of the digital universe weightage. Hence, a strong base (of Colors) in the markets of Mumbai and Delhi helps.”

Sony Entertainment Television (Set) lost 22 GRPs in the digital market to end the first week with 188 GRPs while Zee TV followed with 183 GRPs (previous week 177).

Following Zee TV is Sab with 143 GRPs (previous week 149) and Life OK with 95 GRPs (previous week 105).

  • Bollywood awards show widens genre leader Star Plus’ lead

MUMBAI: Hindi general entertainment channel (GEC) genre leader Star Plus got a big lift from its Bollywood awards show it aired on the new year‘s eve, helping it widen its lead in the opening week of 2013.

Star Plus with 287 GRPs (gross rating points) was ahead of Colors by 34 GRPs as it gained 42 points. The gap in Star Plus‘ GRPs and that of Colors in the 52nd week of 2012 was just 7 points.

The Big Star Entertainment Awards fetched Star Plus 41 GRPs as it ran for three-and-a-half hours on the New Year‘s eve and notched a TVR of 5.9 TVR, according to TAM data (HSM, 4+, C&S) provided by a television channel. The other shows of the channel have seen marginal difference in the viewership, keeping the overall ratings neutral.

Says Star Plus GM Nachiket Pantvaidya, “Star Plus‘ aim with Big Star Entertainment awards was to make New Year‘s Eve a special and memorable one for the entire family and keep them entertained through the night. It is indeed heartening to see a brilliant response from our viewers. This is just the beginning for 2013 and we have great entertainment lined up for the year.”

Colors got a boost from its in-house television awards show to maintain its second position. Colors Golden Petal Awards, also airing on the New Year‘s eve, earned a TVR of 4.5 as the channel added 15 GRPs in the week ended 5 January. The annual award function contributed 31.5 GRPs as Colors totaled 253 GRPs during the week. A few of the shows of the channel like Balika Vadhu (4.9 TVR) and Madhubala (3.7 TVR) saw a slight dip in viewership, while others like Bigg Boss-6 (2.8 TVR), Uttaran (2.5 TVR) and Shaitaan (1.4 TVR) went up marginally.

Occupying the third slot is Zee TV with 211 GRPs (last week 198). The channel had launched a new fiction property, Housewife, that debuted with 2.5 TVR, better than its replaced show Afsar Bitiya which last recorded a rating of 2 TVR. Like Colors, few of Zee TV‘s fiction shows have seen improvement in performance while others have seen loss in eyeballs. Its fiction shows like Punarvivaha (1.9 TVR) and Fear Files (2.4 TVR) have seen increase in numbers.

Sony Entertainment Television (Set) lost 18 GRPs to end the week with 180 GRPs. The channel has launched the new season of its comedy reality show, Comedy Circus, which opened with 2.4 TVR.

Sab lost 6 GRPs to register 150 GRPs while Life OK added four GRPs to close the week with 114 GRPs. Sahara One maintained status quo with 23 GRPs.
