  • Star Plus targets common man with ‘Dance +’

Star Plus targets common man with ‘Dance +’

MUMBAI: From dance battles to face-offs, Star Plus is all set to find new dancing stars across the country. An open stage forum for solo, couple and group performers, Dance + (Dance Plus) aims to be a hard core dance reality show.

The new talent hunt is produced by Frames Productions.

According to Frames Productions founder Ranjeet Thakur, dance is a much loved genre in India for everybody. After the star studded dance show Nach Baliye (currently on-air), the channel wanted to target the common man. It can be recalled that in the year 2013, the channel had tried its hands with a common man’s dance programme in India’s Dancing Superstar (IDS).

“After IDS, Star wanted to re-format a little, jazz it up in a different style and this is how Dance + was born. We came up with the idea of doing the show wherein solos, duo’s and groups will be performing with mentorship,” explains Thakur.

The makers have roped in talented choreographer Remo D’Souza who will don the hat of a super judge. Moreover, the show will have three mentors Dharmesh Yelande, Shakti Mohan and Sumeet Nagdev who will be guiding and teaching the contestants and choreographing the act. “The idea was to have a dance show which would blend the dancing talent of a common man with the expertise of the mentor,” asserts Thakur.

    Just Dance

The makers have been working on the show for the past one year. “Considering all factors like understanding the market, developing it, understanding the kind of dancers and talent that we can get etc, it has taken us over a year,” informs Thakur.

Thakur believes that it is very important to get talent from across India on a show like this. The talent hunt has traveled to 18 odd cities and reached out to maximum people. This apart, the show also travelled to smaller towns, conducting silent auditions for six months to get the best of talent.

Auditions started from 3 June in Guwahati followed by Bhubaneshwar, Ranchi, Kolkata, Lucknow, Indore, Vadodara, Jaipur, Chandigarh, Delhi, Pune, Bengaluru and Mumbai being the last destination on 28 June.

To top it all, digital auditions were conducted by Frames in-house. “Because we have our own network also for finding talent, we knew our own talent, co-coordinators and people across India. Many people are sending us their dance videos even now,” he says.

The 12-week series will have the channel first airing audition episodes followed by the mega audition episodes. The grand premier will have top 12 contestants divided into three teams (four in each) who will then battle it out for the title.

The show will go on floors in July and will be shot at Yash Raj Studios, Mumbai. It plans to go on-air by end of July or first week of August.

  • Star Plus brings the Indian adaptation of ‘Everybody Loves Raymond’

Star Plus brings the Indian adaptation of ‘Everybody Loves Raymond’

MUMBAI: The leader in the Hindi general entertainment space, Star Plus is set to bring Hollywood one step closer to Indian screens. The channel has acquired the rights to the official adaptation of globally popular sitcom – Everybody Loves Raymond. The Indian adaptation, in Hindi, will be titled Sumit Sambhal Lega.

However, the Hindi adaptation will be very close to Everybody Loves Raymond just fine tuned to suit Indian sensibilities.

The story showcases Sumit as the Indian Raymond whose predicament is one that men face universally, of getting stuck in family situations post marriage that gives rise to a comical extravaganza.

To ensure that the nature and DNA of the original series remains intact, the channel has roped in the writer of the original series, Steve Skrovan to oversee the creative process on the show.

This is the first time that any writer from the original show has been involved in the adaptation. Skrovan has been a part of the Everybody Loves Raymond team right from the beginning in the capacity of a writer and co-producer and was with the show till its finale. His role in the Indian version includes providing creative direction to the writers working on the show.

Skrovan said, “It was such a privilege to be a part of this from the beginning. Star Plus is the largest brand and most appropriate to get this show to people in India and even though Sumit Sambhal Lega will revolve around the man, the relationship between his wife and the family seems to fit perfectly in Indian culture.”

The channel has also adopted some of the best practices from Hollywood, including the adoption of Writer’s Room – a platform where all the writers come together and brainstorm to create a masterpiece.

There is a team of dedicated writers for the show instead of one writer working on multiple shows at a time which is a standard practice.  Extremely popular in the west, writer’s room puts more focus on the writing aspect of the show, thus promising entertainment of highest quality.

  • Star Plus takes a leap in storytelling with ‘Badtameez Dil’

Star Plus takes a leap in storytelling with ‘Badtameez Dil’

MUMBAI: The country’s numero uno general entertainment channel (GEC) Star Plus is definitely keeping pace with the changing taste of viewers. Star Plus, over the years, has changed the way GECs told stories and made the characters a household name.

A year back, with shows like VeeraPyaar Ka Dard Hai Meetha Meetha Pyaara Pyaara,Yeh Hai MohabbateinEk Hassena ThiIndia’s Raw StarAirlinesNisha Aur Uske Cousins and Everest – the channel had moved its programming strategy towards youngsters.

Star Plus general manager Gaurav Banerjee once stated that with consumer’s taste evolving, the channel, which entertains the youngest democracy in the world, needs to change as well. And more recently with Tu Mera Hero, Tere Shehar Mein and Dosti, Yaariyan, Manmarziyan, it has touched the hearts of the youth.

Taking another leap in storytelling, the channel has launched Phir Bhi Na Maane… Badtameez Dil, a love story between a VJ and a business head. Produced by Tequila Shot Productions’ Saurabh Tewary, it will air from 29 June from Monday to Saturday at 8.30 pm.

On the title of the show, Tewary believes that it is very important to name the show, which is clutter breaking. “In today’s scenario, the first communication that happens is the name and we wanted it to be little different at every level. Today, if anyone is discussing the name of the show for 30 seconds or a minute, I think the job is done,” he states.

The story is about two characters who get separated because of their misunderstandings and the manipulations of others only to meet again after seven years to resolve the unsettled issues and misunderstandings.

Tewary reveals that the narrative of the show is very different and because the narrative is different, it wanted to name the show slightly hatke. The characters are slightly edgy and over-the-top, but the production house has managed to keep it within the family space making it a hardcore family show.

Abeer Malhotra, played by Pearl V Puri is a VJ with Groove Music channel who leads a charming and luxurious life. Whereas Asmita Sood, who plays the character of Meher Purohit, is a practical and dedicated woman who is the business head of the same music channel and has reached this pinnacle of life with a lot of hard work.

For the first time on Indian television, a daily soap will have an album of five songs recorded exclusively for it, which is sung by Darshan Rawal, the runner up of the singing reality show, India’s Raw Star.

    Finite Love Story

Tewary reveals that he plans to make it a finite show and thus has decided to create only 300-350 episodes. “It is impossible to narrate a love story for ages and ages. Love stories are always finite shows and cannot be kept running for a longer period otherwise the show will lose its relevance and visibility,” he reasons.

Challenging to produce content for six days a week

Tewary feels that producing a daily fiction for six days a week is a challenging job and becomes far more difficult when it is a love story. “In a love story there are not multiple tracks and it is generally around two characters and one has to write episodes and scenes around those two characters. And the moment you shift the gear from those two characters to the other, your show starts falling and at the same time you are creating content for six days a week which is little tough to crack,” he said.

He explained that it puts a lot of pressure on writers and the entire crew and team. “But I guess, this is the kind of madness one needs to deal with when you know that the outcome has to be good,” he said.

Tewary has written the episodic story. However, apart from him there are another six writers onboard. As of now, the production house has canned 12 episodes and by the time the show goes on-air, it will have another six-seven episodes ready to go.

    Demanding Time Slot

The show will be competing with other shows like Jamai Raja on Zee TV, Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah on Sab, Udaan on Colors, Muh Boli Shaadi on Sony Entertainment Television (SET) and Kalash…Ek Vishwaas on Life OK.

Tewary believes that all these are different shows, from family drama to social based to a family entertainer and he wants to cater to all the audiences, which these shows in today’s scenario absorb. “That is why we have kept the base like that and designed the story in that particular manner. We want to cater to the larger audience base starting from 16 years to 30 years old,” he concluded.
