    Q1-2016: Balaji Telefilms’ net down 80% at Rs 2.08 crore; revenue down 45%

    MUMBAI: Balaji Telefilms Limited (BTL) reported lower consolidated profit after tax (PAT) (less than one-fifth) in the quarter ended 30 June, 2015 (Q1-2016) at Rs 2.09 crore (2.8 per cent margin), which was down 80 per cent as compared to the Rs 10.56 crore (7.8 per cent margin) in Q1-2015 and less than one-fourth the PAT of Rs 9.54 crore (12.3 per cent margin) in the immediate trailing quarter.

     

    BTL reported 44.8 per cent drop in consolidated total income from operations (TIO) in Q1-2016 to Rs 74.64 crore as compared to the Rs 135.34 crore in Q1-2015. The company’s Q1-2016 TIO dropped 2.6 per cent as compared to the Rs 76.94 crore in the immediate trailing quarter.

    Television segment

     

    BTL’s television segment reported 57 per cent growth in revenue from operations at Rs 68.46 crore in the current quarter as compared to the Rs 43.50 crore in Q1-2015 and 15 per cent more than the Rs 59.51 crore in Q4-2015.

     

    The segment reported a 62 per cent growth in PAT to Rs 4.51 crore as compared to the Rs 1.96 crore in the corresponding year ago quarter. PAT in Q4-2015 was however more than double at Rs 9.61 crore. Consolidated EBIDTA in the current quarter was Rs 4.97 crore as compared to the Rs 14.71 crore in Q1-2015.

     

    The segment’s cost of production shot up by 54 per cent in the current quarter to Rs 55.21 crore as compared to the Rs 35.77 crore in Q1-2015 and was 23 per cent more than the Rs 44.91 crore in Q4-2015, though the company had shot more commissioned programming hours in Q4-2015 than in the current quarter.

     

    The company’s television segment reported revenue of Rs 52.76 crores from 240.5 hours of commissioned programs as compared to the Rs 42.57 crore for 208 commissioned hours in Q1-2015 and revenue of Rs 59.51 crore for 258 commissioned hours in Q4-2015. The number of commissioned hours does not include Nach Baliye. Revenue per hour for commissioned programs in Q1-2016 increased 7.4 per cent to Rs 21.94 lakh as compared to the Rs 20.42 lakh in Q1-2015, but was 4.9 per cent lower than the Rs 23.06 lakh in the immediate trailing quarter.

     

    UPCOMING TELEVISION SHOWS

     

    BTL is gearing up to launch four new shows across four general entertainment channels (GECs) in 2015. The first show is a finite series of 130 episodes, which will be aired from Monday to Friday on Sony beginning second week of September. The second show is a daily fiction serial to be aired on Star Plus from Monday to Saturday from the second week of September. The newest GEC &TV from the Zee Entertainment Enterprises stable will air a new Balaji fiction daily from Monday to Friday by end September. On the other hand, Colors will air a finite show called Nagin comprising 26 episodes of one hour programming, which will be aired on Saturday and Sunday by end October this year.

     

    Additionally, the company is also in talks with GECs for various non-fiction ideas.

     

    UPCOMING MOVIES

     

    BTL has multiple films namely Grand Masti, XXX, Kya Kool Hai Hum 3 and Udta Punjab on the floor. These are either in the post production stage or are nearing completion. The company is looking at releasing these in Q3 or Q4 of the current financial year if schedules stand. Another biopic Azhar is expected to be released in Q1-2017, while shooting is also in progress for a superhero film Flying Jat.

    MUMBAI: Star Plus continued to retain its leadership position in the general entertainment channel (GEC) category as it fetched 417090 (000 Sum) in the week 31 analysis of Broadcast Audience Measurement Council India (BARC) ratings. 

     

    The second slot was booked by Colors with 340631 (000 Sum) followed by Zee TV with 261527 (000 Sum). Life OK with 235201 (000 Sum) was above Sab at the fourth berth, wherein the latter fetched 197346 (000 Sum).

     

    Zee TV’s Kumkum Bhagya with 5868 (000 sum) dethroned Star Plus’ Saath Nibhaana Saathiya with 5805 (000 sum) to grab the pole position in BARC India’s list of top programs. Colors’ Sasural Simar Ka with 5121 (000 sum) and Swaragini with 4986 (000 sum) secured third and fourth place respectively.

     

    There was no change in the leadership position in the sports genre either as Ten Sports backed by WWE continued to lead the tally with 32203 (000 Sum). The live broadcaster of Sri Lanka VS Pakistan T20 match – Ten Cricket garnered 19549 (000 Sum) and sat on the second slot over Star Sports 2, which secured third position with 14427 (000 Sum)

     

    Nick also managed to keep its leadership position intact in the kids genre with 46317 (000 Sum) followed by Pogo TV with 37391 (000 Sum). Cartoon Network with 27112 (000 Sum) secured third place.

     

    Times Now continued its undisputed run as the leader in the English News genre with 599 (000 Sum) followed by India Today Television with 201 (000 Sum). NDTV 24×7 with 168 (000 Sum) secured the third position.

    TAM week 32: Star Plus sees ascend in ratings

    MUMBAI: After continuous decline in the ratings over the last few weeks, Star Plus in week 32 of TAM ratings, observed an ascend as the channel registered 246 GRPs compared to 229 GRPs in week 31.

     

    Colors at the second spot also saw a slight ascend as the ratings went up from 202 GRPs to 207 GRPs in week 32. On the other hand, Zee TV, in the third spot, has gone down from 153 GRPs to 148 GRPs in week 32.

     

    SAB continued to stay put in the fourth slot with 144 GRPs, while Life OK garnered 121 GRPs to grab the fifth berth. Sony Entertainment Television secured the sixth position with 105 GRPs while &TV with 61 GRPs sat at seventh slot.

     

    Aaj Tak with 26 GRPs topped the list of most watched Hindi news channels in the Hindi Speaking Market (HSM) and was followed by ABP News with 22 GRPs. Rajat Sharma’s India TV secured the third slot with 21 GRPs.

    Zee TV ropes in Rohini Singh as head of commissioning

    MUMBAI: Hindi general entertainment channel (GEC) Zee TV has appointed Rohini Singh as its new head of commissioning. In her new role, she will be responsible for developing fiction content for the channel.

     

    She comes to Zee from Star Plus where she was heading the fiction content development division. She has also spearheaded several milestone projects on Indian television since 1998. 

     

    After completing her graduation in B A Hons (Political Science) from Lady Shri Ram College, Delhi and a Comprehensive Television Course from Academy 18 (A division of Television 18 Networks, Delhi), Singh was working with TV 18 and was part of many projects including Bhanwar (Sony TV) and Haadsa (Sab TV) from 1998 to 2000.

     

    She has previously also worked with many brands including BBC (Jasoos Vijay), Twenty Twenty TV Company (Kaajjal – Sabbki Aankhon Mein Basi, on Sony & Darna Mana Hai) and Cinevistaas (Dilll Mill Gayye on Star One). She then joined Star Network and handled shows on Star One (Dill Mil Gayye, Milley Jab Hum Tum, Geet- Hui Sabse Parayi amongst others.)

     

    Singh was responsible for the concept development of shows like Geet, Pratigya and Maryada. As head of Star Plus, fiction content development division, she launched shows like Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon, Ek Hazaaron Mein Meri Behna, Pyaar Ka Dard, Veera, Arjun, Kaali, Saraswati Chandra, Meri Bhabhi, Ek Ghar Banaounga and Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon 2.

     

    Zee TV business head Pradeep Hejmadi said, “Rohini has an exceptional track record for delivering outstanding drama.     TAM week 31: Zee TV and Sab only gainers amongst GECs

    MUMBAI: Third and fourth position holding Hindi general entertainment channels (GECs) Zee TV and Sab emerged as the only gainers in the GEC category in week 31 of TAM ratings.

     

    While Zee TV went up from 147 GRPs to 153 GRPs, Sab saw a smaller ascend as it went up from 143 GRPs to 146 GRPs. 

     

    On the other hand, Star Plus continued its leadership in GEC category despite witnessing a decline in its ratings. The table topper’s ratings went down from 232 GRPs to 229 GRPs. Second placed channel Colors registered the highest decline amongst all the GECs as it went down from 224 GRPs to 202 GRPs. 

     

    Life OK held its fifth position with 122 GRPs down from 126 GRPs. Sony and &TV spotted at sixth and seventh slot with 103 and 62 GRPs respectively.

     

    On the sports channels’ front, Ten Sports continued its run at the number one spot despite falling down from 25 GRPs to 18 GRPs, whereas cricket specialist from the same venture Ten Cricket secured the second berth with 10 GRPs. Star Sports 2 booked the third slot with 6 GRPs.
     

    Nick led the kids genre in week 31 with 54 GRPs, whereas Pogo garnered 52 GRPs and perched on the second spot. On the other hand, Cartoon Network with 37 GRPs secured the third slot.

     
    Colors’ Mahayudha, Sasural Simar Ka and Swaragini with 3.55 TVR led the tally of top programmes, followed by Zee TV’s Kumkum Bhagya, with 3.52 TVR. Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashma on Sab with 3.47 TVR held its third berth. Colors’ Meri Aashiqui Tum Se Hi booked the fourth berth by registering 3.44 TVR while Star Plus’ Ye Hai Mohabbatein with 3.12 TVR grabbed the fifth spot.

    Star Plus uses Periscope to reach out to viewers on Twitter

    MUMBAI: Hindi general entertainment channels (GEC) have realized the importance of digital. In keeping with this, Star Plus, last week drove conversations on Twitter, by making use of Periscope, a live video streaming platform. 

     

    In a first of its kind, the channel used the technology to promote the finalists of Nach Baliye 7 and also to popularize the title track ‘Mere Nishan’ of recently launched fiction show Badtameez Dil. 

     

    In the week leading up to the grand finale of the dance reality show, Nach Baliye 7, all the finalist jodis of the show engaged in a conversation on Periscope. They answered questions from the fans live and promoted their respective voting numbers.

     

    In a bid to promote the launch of Badtameez Dil, Star Plus used the Periscope tool to ask users their favourite lines from the title track, ‘Mere Nishan.’ To cap off a new experience, singer Darshan sang those particular lines live for them on Periscope.

     

    “By using Periscope in such an interactive and real time manner, Star Plus has shown they truly understand the potential of the live streaming platform. We believe that such partners will help us also expand the possibilities. We would really like to appreciate the foresight behind including Periscope in two popular shows like Nach Baliye and Badtameez Dil, and we hope to see many such engagements, which truly enhance the experience for the viewers,” said a Twitter India representative.

     

    Star Plus has constantly set newer trends in the social media space whether it was the use of Twitter’s Flock to Unlock tool for the Satyamev Jayate promo, or the use of Periscope for real time interaction with the audience.

    MUMBAI: The India VS Zimbabwe second T20, in which the former was defeated, emerged as the top viewed sports programme with 1640 Rat (000s) in week 29 ratings of BARC India. Various special WWE programming grabbed the other four spots in the list of top 5 sports programs.

     

    Ten Sports continued its run as the number one sports channel with 57786 Rat (000s) courtesy WWE, followed by Ten Cricket with 26515 Rat (000s). Star Sports 2 booked the third slot with 14521 Rat (000s).

     

    In the Hindi general entertainment channels (GEC) genre, Star Plus continued its undisputed run as the table topper with 403820 Rat (000s Sum). The leader was followed by Colors with 383400 Rat (000s Sum) while the third spot was occupied by 262216 Rat (000s Sum). Life OK was above Sab at the fourth slot with 237718 Rat (000s Sum), while the latter managed to secure 199225 Rat (000s Sum) in week 29.

     

    Saath Nibhaana Saathiya emerged as the top program with 6350 Rat (000s) while Kumkum Bhagya with 5537 Rat (000s) bagged the second position. Ye Hai Mohabbatein stood at the third spot with 5314 Rat (000s).

     

    Times Now comfortably sat in the number one spot in the English News category with 568 Rat (000s Sum), followed by News X with 255 Rat (000s Sum). India Today Television secured the third slot with 215 Rat (000s Sum).

     

    BARC, in a service bulletin, notified, “As a JIB, the endeavour at BARC India has been to deliver audience estimates with precision and reliability while also adhering to global research standards including statistical samples, measurement technology, collection, processing and reporting. This bulletin addresses processing changes that are going to be effective from Week 29, 2015 forward with a retrospective effect for the period of week 21–28, 2015.”

     

     The changes will improve BARC India Service in the following areas: 

     

    ·         Increases accuracy, precision and reliability 

     

    ·         Prepares service for start of rural reporting 

     

    ·         Provides historical base for currency service 

     

    There are two major changes effective from this period: 

     

    Change #1: Weekly to Daily Weighting  

     

    ·         Weekly weighting was an interim process used while the panel was stabilizing.

     

    ·         Daily weighting is the global standard for TV audience measurement including USA, UK, France, Australia and other countries across Americas, Europe and Asia-Pacific.  

     

    ·         The audience estimates reported for each day of the week reflect the viewing of all sample homes from which viewing data are collected. 

     

    Change #2: Updation of Planview Module

     

    ·         New configuration in Planview allows users to plan on Adbreaks and/or programs. It also allows users to plan with Behavioral Targets. Segregation of Markets and Target is in development. This will be applicable across all modules & Planview and shall be released by Week 31. 

     

    ·         The new software version will also show Individual and Household Target separately. 

     

    ·         In BMW software, minimum reporting rules will be applied daily 

     

    “We are also working on other market feedback on the software that shall be released in due course,” BARC informed.

    MUMBAI: Star Plus’ drop in TAM ratings continues as the table topper descended from 237 GRPs to 232 GRPs in week 30. On the other hand, Colors garnered 224 GRPs in week 30, up from 204 GRPs.

     

    Zee too witnessed a slight descend in its ratings as it was down to 147 GRPs compared to 152 of last week. Sab held on to its number four slot over Life OK with 143 GRPs while the latter garnered 126 GRPs. 

     

    A moment of respite came in for Sony Entertainment Television as its ratings went up to 111 GRPs from 107 GRPs. &TV also observed slight improvement in ratings as it went up from 65 GRPs to 67 GRPs.

     

    Ten Sports continued its run at the number one spot in the sports genre with 25 GRPs, cricket specialist from the same venture Ten Cricket secured the second berth with 12 GRPs. Sony Six booked the third slot with 6 GRPs.

     

    Nick led the kids genre in week 30 with 53 GRPs, whereas Pogo garnered 49 GRPs to sit on second spot. On the other hand, Cartoon Network with 35 GRPs secured the third slot.

     

    Zee TV’s Kumkum Bhagya, with 6.35 TVR led the tally of top programmes, followed by Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashma of Sab with 3.59 TVR. Colors’ Meri Aashiqui Tum Se Hi booked the third berth by registering 3.55 TVR.  Star Plus’ Ye Hai Mohabbatein and Saathiya Saath Nibhana sat at number four and five with 3.37 and 3.36 TVR respectively.

    Star Plus deploys YouTube 360 for ‘Dance+’ immersive campaign

    MUMBAI: Keeping true to its promise of innovation, leader in the Hindi general entertainment channel (GEC) space, Star Plus launched its new show Dance+ with a difference. As part of the launch campaign, the channel gave viewers an immersive experience into the Dance+ stage and performances using the YouTube 360 feature.

     

    YouTube 360 serves up videos that give you a complete 360 view of the content simply by moving and rotating the device on which the video is being viewed. 

     

    With this, Star Plus has become the first brand in India to have used the YouTube 360 feature to showcase video content to connect with its audience. The one minute long video showcased some of the Dance+ performances in 360 giving viewers a chance to see the entire set, stage, audiences and super judge Remo D’Souza by a simple rotation of their mobile device. The video garnered more than half a million views within a few hours of launch prompting viewers to actively share it on social media. 

     

    The Dance+ 360 video also featured on YouTube’s 360° global channel for the most popular and compelling virtual reality videos among the likes of Star Wars and Nike.

     

    A Star spokesperson said, “At Star Plus, we take pride in being ahead of the curve in all our marketing endeavours. We felt this was a great innovation in the digital space and wanted to be the first to use this to bring alive the superlative experience of Dance + for our viewers.”

    MUMBAI: Ten Cricket took the pole position in the list of top sports channels in week 28 of BARC ratings courtesy the India VS Zimbabwe cricket series. The channel garnered 58830 (000s sum).

     

    Ten Cricket was followed by Ten Sports with 35156 (000s sum). On the other hand, Sony Six bagged the third berth with 11160 (000s sum). The second ODI of Prayag India VS Zimbabwe series was the most watched program in sports sector with 1288 (000s sum). Other than the cricket series, WWE Raw and WWE Smackdown were the programmes that featured in the list of most watched sports programs.

     

    In the GEC sector, Star Plus continued its dominance with 380392 (000s sum) and stood tall on the top berth, followed by Colors with 315462 (000s sum). Zee TV with 255005 (000s sum) booked the third spot where as Life Ok with 230762 (000s sum) grabbed fourth place. Sony, after observing an ascend following the premiere of PK, has again dropped to the fifth slot.

     

    Zee TV’s Kumkum Bhagya topped the list of top programs in the GEC category with 5643 (000s sum) followed by Saath Nibhaana Saathiya of Star Plus with 5601 (000s sum). Colors’ Sasural Simar Ka bagged third berth with 4184 (000s sum).

     

    Times Now continued its undisputed run in English News genre as it secured 374 (000s sum) to stay on top. India Today Television with 145 (000s sum) bagged the second slot while CNN–IBN, with 143 (000s sum), featured in the third slot.

     

    The Kids genre saw Nick leading the lot with 44818 (000s) followed by Pogo TV with 36210 (000s sum). Cartoon Network with 31586 (000s sum) took the third spot in the list.
