MUMBAI: Star India was one of the few broadcasters to emerge with glory at the 11th edition of Goafest 2016 with 20 metals to its name. Its biggest success story was the extremely popular campaign ‘Mauka Mauka’ that the channel had done in-house for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015. The catchy jingle not only became a nationally trending conversation piece, but also won the network gold in the Broadcaster category at the Abbys. Apart from the gold, the promotion also won three silvers in media and creative Abby.

Star India’s flagship show Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon also claimed a bronze for making the best TV Fiction Promo for its rebooted mini-series version on Hotstar – Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon – Ek Jashn. • Star India to back its Star Jalsha and Jalsha Movies HD launch with aggressive marketing and adequate content

Star India to back its Star Jalsha and Jalsha Movies HD launch with aggressive marketing and adequate content

MUMBAI: It is very easy to say that the television industry in India is in a state of stagnation and soon will fall prey to the new predator- digital, as has happened in the west. But then, when you have a constantly innovating broadcaster like Star India, the perception can be false. Setting trends has been a regular habit for the media baron Rupert Murdoch backed broadcaster and it’s repeating itself again.

“We launched the first HD channel in India and the rest followed the trend. Now we are launching the HD feed of Star Jalsha and Jalsha Movies, which is a first in the Bengali space,” says Kevin Vaz.

This Bengali new year (Poila Boishak), the front-runner in the Bengali entertainment space, Star Jalsha and Jalsha Movies will have their HD offering to woo their consumers with an exquisite viewing experience. “We have a 51 per cent market share when it comes to viewership, we have 8 to 9 shows always featuring among the top shows, which clearly proves our superiority and our leadership in the space. It’s our responsibility to go and invest on an innovation like this,” asserts Vaz.

There are a lot of new shows that Jalsha has launched recently and a good number of them are there in the pipeline. “It’s not just launching a channel, it’s about backing it up with adequate content also. We have shows like Krian Mala which in HD will give viewers an all new experience to cherish. We are coming up with our 100 episodic show Mahanayak starring Tollywood super star Prasenjit Chatterjee. It will be our biggest production ever and when you have a show like this going HD, is a certain proposition,” explains Vaz.

“The HD feeds will be exact replicas of the SD channels” confirms Vaz, which also rules out the possibility of exclusive HD premiers. But the network will not follow the replicating strategy when it comes to monetisation. “As a group, Star India monetises HD separately, and we will continue to do this with the two new Bengali HD offerings also,” he adds.

A media planning expert on condition of anonymity says, “HD is emerging as an exclusive platform to cater to the niche or rather the top of the pyramid audience and the rates too are reaching a premium, at least in the English entertainment genre. This new offering from Star in the regional Bengali market too will have its premium price. And it’s not only the people from that region who will consume the content, Bengali people across the country will enjoy the offering, so from the brands point of view, its not only that particular region but the entire community that the channels will reach out to.”

The launch will be backed by aggressive 360 degree marketing, “We will promote it across all our HD offerings, this is a big launch that we are doing and we will back it in every possible way,” Vaz concludes.

MIPTV 2016: Deal making, the Goenka brothers and the Indian presence

Cannes: A 100 plus strong delegation has been making its presence felt at Reed Midem’s MIPTV 2016 in this picturesque small town of Cannes on the French Riviera. Thankfully the weather has held up and the skies have been clear on most days, excepting for one when it drizzled steadily throughout. Touts on the streets made a killing selling umbrellas. On other days, a nip in the air  forced everyone to bring out their cardigans and overcoats.

But on Day 3 of the 50 plus year old market cum festival, the sun came out in all its glory with the temperature climbing up and television executives feeling its full blaze even as the deal making and the conferences and debates hotted up.

MipTV, the festival-cum-market has attracted upwards of 10,500 participants, at a time when Europe has been grappling  with warning signs about it being a no-visit zone courtesy the terrorist attacks.

For the Indians, the highlight of MipTV is the honouring of the two Goenka brothers – Punit and Amit Goenka (the scions of media entrepreneur Subhash Chandra) – with the Medialle des Honneurs on 6 April. Punit, who was supposed to come, could not make it on account of a family emergency, but Amit did.  This is the first time an Indian is being honoured as such by the French company Reed Midem.

Additionally, the other high points have been an India format session moderated by Indiantelevision.com founder Anil Wanvari, and a session on 4K in which TravelXP CEO Prashant Chothani participated. Other panelists on the India session included: Ajay Nair (OML), Rahul Sangari (Grey Matter), GoQuest Media (Vivek Lath), and Yogesh Karikurve (ZeeTV).

Indian companies such as Zee TV, Star India, GoQuest, Vedic Broadcasting, DQ Entertainment, Cosmos Maya, Eros Worldwide, Indiantelevision.com, Indiacast, Green Gold Animation, Rajshri Entertainment, are among those companies which have come on as exhibitors.

Film producer Prasad Devineni who bankrolled the  Indian multilingual blockbuster film Bahubali and who also churns out many a TV show in the Telugu market made it to MIPTV to explore new avenues for his company Arka Media Works.

Cosmos Maya CEO Anish Mehta was cock-a-hoop with delight about the deals his company had managed to sign on at MipTV.

MIPTV also had some grand moments  like the premier  for Roots and The Story of God (Morgan Freeman), Morgan Spurlock’s keynote, the launch of MipDrama Screenings, the keynotes by author and writer Harlan Coben, Vivendi Content & Havas Media CEO Domiqnique Delport, RTL co-CEO Gullaume de Posch, Mattel COO & President Richard Dickson and Wildness chief strategy officer Margaret Czeisler.

At the time of writing all eyes were turned towards the Medaille D’Honneur ceremony which was slated to be held late on the evening of 6 April.  Amit is expected to receive the award for himself and his brother in front of an audience consisting of leading global TV executives.

In addition to Punit Goenka and Amit Goenka, three other distinguished TV industry leaders will receive Médaille d’Honneur in Cannes including:   Germany’s Studiocanal TV MD Rola Bauer,  Disney Media Networks global distribution president Ben Pyne from the US  and Mexico’s Comarex president Marcel Vinay.

  • Hathway expands role of Shirish Ruparel; Star India’s NM Rao joins as head content & carriage

Hathway expands role of Shirish Ruparel; Star India’s NM Rao joins as head content & carriage

MUMBAI: Hathway is restructuring its content vertical by expanding the role of executive vice president- content & VAS Shirish Ruparel, with the growing demands of the business in a move to strengthen its content team and to diversify its revenue streams.

While expanding Ruparel’s role, Hathway has also taken on-board N.M. Rao as head-content & carriage to handle all-India content and carriage with effect from 4 April, based at their corporate office in Mumbai, and he will report to Shirish Ruparel.

Ruparel’s portfolio will now include content and carriage, ad sales, OTT service offerings and value added services as Hathway looks to create new revenue streams in the new digitization era. As part of his expanded role, Ruparel would now oversee content and carriage and Ad sales monetization while also develop Hathways’ in-house channel bouquet into a series of strong pan-India and regional channels and improve the content portfolio for in-house and regional channel base by working with leading production and content providers.

Additionally, he will also be responsible for increasing the value pie of Hathway across new streams such as OTT (Over-the-top TV) services and offers and diversify the business into segments such as VAS (value-added services) including VOD (video-on demand), mobile streaming, EPG amongst other key monetization initiatives.

In his expanded role, Ruparel will continue to report to president-video business T S Panesar.

Rao joins Hathway from Star India where he was working as assistant vice president-affiliate sales looking after carriage and content for key MSO accounts as part of the broadcasters’ distribution set-up.

Having experience of over 15 years, Rao has been a part of the media and broadcast industry for more than a decade having worked across both print and electronic media in the areas of affiliate sales with Star TV (content, carriage, trade marketing) and advertising sales with The Times of India (print & special projects). As part of his new role, Rao will be responsible for negotiation and management of all content deals with broadcasters, both for content and carriage.

Commenting on this restructuring, Hathway Cable & Datacom CEO & MD Jagdish Kumar said, “In the digitization era, content will play an integral role for Hathway in defining and transforming customer experience and with this aim, we are bringing in a change in our content vertical composition. Shirish Ruparel has been one of the key members of the senior management and contributed immensely towards the building of our content team. We are expanding his role to utilize his vast experience and expertise in building wider content revenue streams in segments like OTT and VAS. We are also pleased to have N.M Rao on-board with us to look after content and carriage as we aim to create a strong vertical with multiple revenue streams that will set the business in the new fiscal. With his vast experience in distribution, content and carriage with Star, we are extremely confident that Rao will provide the right boost to our overall objectives and set new benchmarks.”

In February, Hathway had hired Anand Kamani as vice president- advertising sales to handle its ad-sales business at an all-India level, also reporting into Shirish Ruparel. With the expansion of Ruparel’s role and Rao joining the team to focus on content and carriage, Hathway is looking at an aggressive roadmap to build its content portfolio to increase revenue generation at a time when digitization roll-out is underway in Phase- III and IV and is targeted to complete by end of this year.

With DTH players also looking to offer additional value added services to its consumers, Hathway as one of the leading multi-system operators is also looking at the next level of customization by offering its subscribers products and solutions which will provide added entertainment and benefits to build better ARPUs.
