  • Canxing-Star China’s ‘Brilliant Chinese’ co-developed with Syco rated week’s top show

    MUMBAI: Canxing – Star China vice-president of Lu Wei has announced ratings of its new original talent show Brilliant Chinese-Path to Glory. For the past two weeks, over 120 million people have watched episodes 5 and 6 of the series, earning a 4.2% market share, and this week officially ranked #1 across China. The show airs in primetime on CCTV-1 Saturday evenings at 8:00 pm CST.

    On its way to be the next major global Format hit, Brilliant Chinese – Path To Glory, is the first Chinese format ready for international distribution with co-development partner Syco, following the announcement of the collaboration in December 2016.

    “Brilliant Chinese-Path to Glory takes the talent Format to a new level. Canxing-Star China is thrilled that that our unique variety show has pushed the boundaries showcasing talent from all walks of life. Our Chinese audience can’t wait to choose the winner and we look forward to presenting the format to the rest of the world,” said Star China International Media Limited deputy general manager Iris Xia.

    The format for Brilliant Chinese-Path to Glory was developed with Syco Entertainment and Canxing/Star China, as part of a three-year development deal signed with Syco with a primary goal to co-develop large scale global entertainment formats with appeal for the Chinese-speaking world; and the potential for international distribution.

    “We are delighted with the show, more than 120 million viewers in the last two weeks cannot be wrong. Working with our friends in China has been a joy and we look forward to even greater success moving forward” said Syco Entertainment global head of television Nigel Hall.

    Brilliant Chinese – Path To Glory: This unique talent show takes ordinary members of the public and turns them into television stars. From the fishmonger to the housewife, viewers have been captivated – watching stars being created each week. Four judges representing four categories – Singing, Dance, Variety and Kids – work with their favorites to help members of the public achieve their full potential as artists. The magic happens when all four judges fall in love with an act and the path to glory is opened to the next round.

    Judges: The four category judges, each specialising in their area of expertise, are: well-known Chinese television personality, Sa Beining as the head judge. He has been a host on CCTV and involved with many television programs and specializes in the Variety category. Overseeing the Kids’ category is Zhu Dan — a well-known Chinese actress and host, appearing on leading provincial satellite channels. The Singing category will be judged by Cai Guoqing, a prestigious Chinese singer who holds the record for the most performances on CCTV1’s Spring Festival Gala. The Dance category is being judged by Huang Doudou, a Chinese professional dancer and choreographer, who won numerous domestic and International dancing competition awards.

    MUMBAI: Canxing Production and Star China International Media Limited signed a major three-year development deal with the globally renowned creative company Syco Entertainment.

    The agreement’s primary aim is to co-develop large scale global entertainment formats with appeal for Greater China; and the potential for international distribution. The deal was signed in London today, after a four-day creative conference last week between high level producers of both companies.

    The conference was led by Canxing Production CEO Tian Ming and Star China executives — Star China chief director Jin Lei (Sing! China, Sing My Song, and The Voice of China) and deputy general manager Iris Xia, alongside Syco global head of television Nigel Hall, and Syco head of international George Levendis.

    “Canxing/Star China is thrilled to partner with Syco. We just completed a very inspiring week-long creative session with Syco and our team is excited for the future projects we will co-create. This is the first time Canxing/Star China has entered into such a major collaborative deal with a company outside China,” said Tian Ming.

    Nigel Hall said: “Syco Entertainment is delighted to partner with Star China in this long-term development deal. Star China has a first class pedigree of production in China and, for our part at Syco, we believe our visions will help this partnership be truly creative and successful.”

    Canxing/Star China’s recent hit program Sing! China aired on Zhejiang Satellite TV, earning the # 1 position every week of its 13-week run. The show also received major online visibility throughout the season. Within the first 2 days of the initial airing, the show received more than 500 million total views on Tencent and Youku video sites and broke online records by receiving more than 37 billion views for the entire first season. There were over 47 million views on Tencent and YouKu in just 24 hours alone after the finale. In October, Zhejiang announced the commission of Season 2 for Spring 2017.

China. Tencent and Youku Video report over 47 million play times within 24 hours of the finale. The live finale was filmed at the “Bird Nest” in Beijing, officially known as the National Stadium and reached 4+ Viewers (000) 15,897 and TV Ratings were 3.89% among 52 cities, 16.05% of market share. The music competition program earned #1 rating on Zhejiang Satellite TV for each of its 13 weekly episode run, several times breaking all previous ratings’ records. Star China CEO, Tian Ming announced that domestic auditions will begin next month for Season 2 after Zhejiang Satellite TV confirmed commission of Season 2. Star China will be seeking a distribution partner at MIPCOM.

    Star China International Media is a leading media entertainment group in China with businesses ranging from TV production, broadcasting, filmmaking, artist management, music and concert production. As of January 2014, China Media Capital acquired the remaining 47% share from News Corporation to become the sole owner of Star China.

    FremantleMedia China appoints Star’s Vivian Yin as CEO

    MUMBAI: FremantleMedia China has appointed Vivian Yin as CEO. Based in Shanghai, Yin joined the company this week and reports into FremantleMedia Asia managing director Paul O’Hanlon.

     

    Yin, most recently Star China chief representative and VP production, will now be responsible for the overall day to day management of the operation and will drive the continued expansion of the FremantleMedia China business. 

     

    O’Hanlon said, “FremantleMedia’s China business is a critical part of our strategic growth in the region. Vivian’s strong sense of content creation and hands on production expertise, plus her experience as a highly regarded executive at Star China will be a fantastic asset as we step forward with our plans in China.”

     

    Yin added, “I am extremely honoured to be joining the senior team of FremantleMedia Asia, and adding my experience to drive exciting new growth plans in China. I look forward to working on the raft of projects already in the pipeline, and broadening our business as we continue to diversify.”

    Jack Gao appointed Star China CEO, News Corp. VP

    MUMBAI: Star has appointed Dr. Jack Gao as its CEO of Star China. Gao will officially join Star in November 2006, and will report to Star CEO Michelle Guthrie.

    Based in Beijing, Gao will be in charge of Star’s overall business interests in China. He will be responsible for developing strategic and business directions while also overseeing Star China’s day-to-day operations.

    Gao has also been appointed VP of News Corporation and will assume the position of chief representative of the News Corporation Beijing representative office, responsible for running News Corporation’s activities in China, informs an official release.

    Commenting on Gao’s appointment, Guthrie said, “Jack’s insights to the China market, combined with his wealth of networking and business experience, and a proven track-record of success, make him a unique fit to lead our businesses and growth initiatives in China. We are fortunate to have attracted him to join us.”

    “Bringing on someone of Jack’s caliber to lead our China operations underscores Star and News Corporation’s commitment to this important market. As we expand aggressively into the digital media space, Jack’s technology background and experience in running businesses for multinationals such as Microsoft and Autodesk in China will serve as important assets in taking us to the next stage of our development in China,” Guthrie continued.

    Prior to joining Star, Gao served for more than three years as Apac Emerging Geography VP for Autodesk Inc., where he was responsible for strategy, marketing and sales, product research and development, government and public relations, investments, human resources, finance and administration operations in Greater China and India. Before that, Gao was general partner of Walden International, a leading venture capital firm in the USA. Between 1999 and 2002, Gao was president and general manager of Microsoft (China) Co. Ltd. Prior to joining Microsoft, Gao spent five years with Autodesk, as regional director, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Mainland China, the release adds.

    Gao holds doctorate, master and bachelor degrees in engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles, and Harbin Institute of Technology in China.

    Star China renews Sony Picture Television Intl’s game show ‘Blackjack Bowling’

    MUMBAI: Star has signed a deal with Sony Pictures Television International (SPTI) to renew the second season of 212 episodes of Blackjack Bowling for Star Chinese in Taiwan.

    This follows the success of the game show format on the channel since its launch last June in Taiwan.

    On Star Chinese the show is known as Lucky Star and kicks of next month. The game show’s first season, which began broadcasting in June 2005, registered an audience of 6.6 million, and a 31 per cent reach in viewership in the first three months. It has consistently been ranked among the top three most watched game shows on pay TV channels in Taiwan says SPTI.

    SPTI adds that Blackjack Bowling is the only show of its kind that combines two of the world’s favorite pastimes – blackjack and bowling. Just as the two simple elements of the roulette wheel and hangman were combined to create Wheel Of Fortune, SPTI united two activities that everyone in the world has played. Blackjack Bowling’s format is flexible and can be played in either a half an hour or a one hour format.
